On the National Team level, World Champions are considered the team that wins the World Cup or the Olympics.

"The winners of the UEFA Champions League would never call themselves world champions", and this is even though that team is arguably the best team in the world that year, and with a far more diverse competition in terms of nationalities compared to the NBA. You can't become world champion unless you are competing for your country, which is exactly the point Lyles is making.
He's wrong because the NBA is, by far, the top professional league in the world. You think the champs of the Spanish Liga ACB (the top professional league outside of the USA) could beat the Celtics in a 7-game series? Real Madrid (current league champ) has 8-players with NBA experience. While I agree by definition the NBA champions are not technically a “World” Champion, it’s kind of hard to argue that the best basketball players are not in the NBA. I can’t remember the last time in modern history that a “World Champion” team didn’t have NBA players in it.
