Listen to Robert Hazard: RobertHazard.l...
Chorus:
We're riding on the escalator of life
We're shopping in the human mall
We're dancing on the escalator of life
Won't be happy 'til we have it all
#RobertHazard #EscalatorofLife #OfficialMusicVideo
He was a genuinely nice guy. We used to catch him at the Empire Rock Room in Philly every time he rolled in. Always friendly and chatty with us.
There is no song that personifies the 1980s better than this one.
An underrated song. Robert Hazard wrote'Girls Just Want to Have Fun.'
Listening to this as a tribute to my brother in law Louie who passed away yesterday. This will always remind me of him.
When I was a teenager, we moved to the Philly suburbs and WMMR played this song constantly. Makes me miss the Morning Zoo days, Pierre Robert, Nick The Hotdog Man, and all those guys.
Same. Moved to Center City in 1980 when I was 13. Had completely forgotten about Robert Hazard and the Heroes until today. Reminds me of WMMR and of South Street, TLA, Pat's Cheesesteaks and The Hooters!
Pierre Robert is STILL at WMMR!
I too miss the Morning Zoo. One of the reasons I hate Howard Stern.
I grew up in Willow Grove. I'm now friends with Michael Tearson.
Good times, best of times.
When we're on the escalator at the Mall I sometimes start singing this song, and my children roll their eyes.
Ha, I thought I was the only one sang this song on the escalator. Great song
😂 lol that's funny 😂
"We're riding on the escalator of life, we're shopping in the human mall - We're dancing on the escalator of life, won't be happy till we have it all!" lol
Now that's extremely funny
This Philly girl has a cassette tape of this song I taped from either WMMR or WXPN. Philadelphia had a great music scene in 70s-80s. RIP Robert Hazard 🙏🏻
And on cassette yet wxpn and some legendary. Now where is Robert h hazard today.. I used to hear thisconkaks fm.1078 canyon Amarillo texas in 87 -89
I played for the SF 49ers in the 80's & had some of our best performances with this ringing through our ears!
You are a physician who won a Super Bowl? Congrats. You led a fulfilling life!
What a flex it must be to get to say you're a physician and a former NFL player.
People don't realize how good the music scene was in Philadelphia especially in the '80s I grew up in Philly from Robert hazard the Hooters the waitresses separate checks there were so many good bands and we had such a good time and we danced and let's not forget the sound of Philadelphia as well as the gospel music of Philadelphia that influenced so many talented people who called Philadelphia home I miss my hometown
Being from the UK I love this style of music. This is the most European-sounding 80s hit by an American artist I've found for a long time.
And don't forget the Dead Milkmen
And The A's
Tommy Conwell, Alan Mann
Add me to the list of born in Philly artists-
Mista Scary...grew up in Roxborough. Got my early guitar lessons at Coval Music 🎶 on Ridge Avenue.
Have not heard this song in 40 years, but its been in my head the last 3 days and nights.
Best attempt ever by an American at the European New Wave style of music.
Me and a friend drove in a snowstorm to see him play at the Empire Rock Club in Philly. There was hardly anyone there because of the weather, but we didn''t care and had one of the best nights ever! If I remember correclty, I believe the A's opened up for him. Such a great night of music!!
Like a fine wine, gets better with age. As a Philly native I love The Hooters and Robert Hazzard.
Don't forget the A's.
Philly right here too, baby! Hell yeah♥️
Same here!
Classic guy hi 5
I like it better and better as the years go by .
One of the most amazing 'rare' New Wave songs....
I just discovered that he wrote and performed "Girls just wanna have fun" in 1979 before Cindi Lauper's version became a huge hit.
He was so underrated. Saw him a couple times when I lived on South St when Philly was great.
MTV played this song back in its early days when I was a kid, and the song and video always stuck with me. One of my very favorite songs from the 80s; Robert should have been a big star, he had the perfect 80s cool...
One of those tracks that could only be from late 1982 / early 1983. Distinctive sound and video.
Everytime i get on a escalator. I have to sing this. Wife loves it. But nobody else gets it.😮
I’d get it and likely sing along with you
just finding this on my many cyberspace rabbit hole trips. although nothing about the music or video wowed me, i do understand the significance of this piece of art as a cultural time stamp on our civilization. rip mr. hazard, thank you for your contribution.
Big hit on Philly radio, which covered eastern PA, south Jersey and Jersey shore and Delaware.
It took me too long to remember this song. Never gets old. So sorry to see Robert Hazard passed away and that is probably why I hadn't heard him touring with the Hooters. RIP
Born and Raised in the Heart and Soul of Philadelphia and participated in school yard activities jamming to Robert Hazard what a beautiful time!
That woman with the high hair and necklace totally got on board when the director said "REALLY enunciate the words to the song"
This song reached No. 58 on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 9, 1983. His only song to chart in the Hot 100
Should have released it here in the UK, it would have been a top 10 hit because this was the style of music that was very popular in England at that time.
NOT TRUE Girls Just Wanna Have Fun was RHazards song n reached #2 US
The original version! Before the corporate suits made it mellower. :)
Still have a Hazard button they used to hand out at the shows ❤
This is like if someone was self-aware of how the 80’s would be remembered, and made a music video to describe it. That’s time traveler behavior.
An all-time favorite of mine. RIP Robert. x
Saw him live twice...first on South St..one of a handful of people there. He sat at talked with us. Unforgettable.
A gem of a deep cut from the new wave classics of the 80’s
Lost all the great dance clubs and local bands when they raised the drinking age I jersey . Every weekend was either Robert hazard , the hooters , witness etc
My favorite video from that era. It, as well as I will be forgotten in 10 years.
He sold antiques in Medford NJ I bought a beautiful end tables and a beautiful pie crust from the 1800 and 1920s beautiful tables it was like in the in the 80s great person I was a kid at the time my mom purchase the items at a beautiful home in Medford he has some beautiful old furniture beautiful art I knew who he was very nice genuine kind person . Still have the 3 tables and he was so nice to my Down syndrome .great person
Love finding 80s gems like this I've never heard before.
Yeah I thought I had heard every good 8os song but I was happily mistaken
Have a look at the "Less well known 80s hits" on my UA-cam channel if you like. There are about 2,000 songs on there at the moment. I'm British so they're mainly unknown from a UK perspective.
@decimated550
You have barely scratched
the surface .
No kidding. I’m about as much of an 80’s child as you can get and I’ve never heard this
@@MillerVanDotTVMaybe it´s because it was only released in US/Australia/Canada. (discogs)
Listening to this again in 2024! I LOVE...his voice ❤
RIP Robert. Saw him every time he was in reading pa..rock on
Omg. Spotify just came through. I was listening to "She Sheila" radio, and this came up. Gold. One of few I haven't heard in 38 years. 🖤
God this song slaps. Sounding way ahead of its time
Yes. Yes, it does.
We are all about to be " Slapped ", by GOD.
our children will, Great grandchildren ÷÷÷.....
The men with all the 80s makeup remind me of movie vampires
Wow, I don’t think I heard this song since highschool (I’m 56). Awesome!!!!
Love this song. They remind me of modern vampires 🧛♀️
Besides this great song Robert also wrote "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" a big hit for Cyndi Lauper. Cheers! 🥨
Blast from a past that sounded a lot better than the present.
Who's listening to this MASTERPIECE in 2023?❤️
"I'm a close personal friend of Gloria Vanderbilt"
2024 Me and my 91 year old Mom. Great song!
@pisceananomaly , I don’t let the guilty feeling shake me. You can have your cake and eat it baby!
Summer if 1983 back when MTV played music
Just added it to my 1983 Vista Cruising Music playlist! My local mall called itself Willow Grove Park, after the amusement park that it replaced.
Instead of listening it and 2024 such a masterpiece
93.3 WMMR classic right here
MMR was the best!
one of the monster hits of the 80s
Monster hit for those who KNOW
@@skeletoncable Peaked at #58. Not exactly a monster hit but a catchy new wave tune.
This really brings me back to the 80s! Thanks!
One of my absolute favs from the ‘80s 😎
So I'm listening to this in 2021 but everyone is sleeping and I want to sing it ~ LOUD!
Let's do this shit sister I'll sing with you
@@classifiedlonerider590 LOL too late Ive moved on!
@@hollyeckert357 damn it lol. Well next time
@@classifiedlonerider590 Hahahahaha ! Good suggestion . If you're still listening then the escalator is still going .
I would put this in the same category with new wave silly but cool songs like "Mexican Radio" Stan Ridgway song! I use to live in Southern Calif 1960's....1988.. good rock stations like KMET home of Dr. Demento..an KROQ FM played newwave and silly funny punkrock songs. Those were the good ole days for me...i miss those days...😢
I saw him acoustic and he was a great performer. He was a Hero to us for sure. Wish I had seen the band but I was just a bit too young and rural n.j.😂
Got some airplay in 1983 on some New Wave stations and MTV.. However the only way to buy the song was to get the Robert Hazard EP, which I did, and it's great!.. RIP Robert.. some cool tunes you gave us!.
Still rocks in 2021!!!!!!!!
😉♥️
Jitterbug People keep on rockin
My sister was friends with his wife, what a great guy.
the chorus of this song is playing in millions of heads everyday as they ride an escalator.
Always loved this song. His other hit around this time was Change Reaction which was also great. I recorded them both off the radio on a cassette and wore it out.
I first heard this on siriusxm last year & really liked it, but geeze, what a creepy video.
I love this video, one of the best from the early 80s.
Sadly, Robert Hazard died in 2008. He wrote Girls Just Want To Have Fun.
I used to play at the Hot Club on South Street with my band Grim/Klone on the same night with Robert and The Heroes.
Philly rocks. Love this song.
Those people staring into your soul lip-syncing the chorus are nightmare fuel, lol. Great song, though; would love to know more of what it's about.
Mindless materialism and name dropping (Hey, baby, I'm a personal friend of Gloria Vanderbilt!).
Thanks to WLIR this Brooklyn boy knew and loved this Philly classic!
I remember this video when it first came out!
This song is not going to make any sense in a dozen or so years. But it's amazing to us.
Great song then, great song still.
I miss the '80s.
From the old WLIR days. A very underrated classic.
WMMR Rocked planet earth!
The Weeknd lifted that synth riff for Blinding Light.
I think he lifted more than that, lots of "similarities" between the two, audio and visual.
Classic. Much better than Girls Just Want To Have Fun.
I love that, but this does seem like an improvement honestly, but remember that that was a demo.
Listening to this now. It's my theme song. I want it all!!!
This song should have been a centerpiece track in the Wonder Woman 1984 movie.
Did it come out around 84, or towards the end of the decade?
I only ask because one of the posters at the start has "Kamikaze 89" on it.
@@thetrickisirarelyrespond5945 "Wonder Woman 1984" came out last year. It was the sequel to the Wonder Woman movie from a couple years earlier. It's called "Wonder Woman 84" because it takes place in 1984. "Escalator of Life" should have been in the movie because a lot of it takes place in a mall and showcases 1980s consumerism. As for the movie "Kamikaze '89", that was a German film which came out in 1982.
Seen him twice .great live
This is one of the most underrated new wave classics from a new wave legend who' would write songs for the new wave goddess Cyndi Lauper girls want to have fun
I'm British and this sounds like a classic early 1980s British synth hit. Most of the songs in our charts sounded like this at that time. I wouldn't have guessed it was American. I can't think of many American bands who've made music sounding as European as this. Devo sounded more American for instance.
@@ajs41 good one huh but is has that early British new wave sound
Yeah, dude coulda been bigger in the UK.
BIG TUNE
Saw him at the London Victory club in Philly
I just discovered Robert via old R&R Newspaper magazine archives. Those charts open you up to so many good bands that have been forgotten by most people.
Should have posted the listings. It would have been interesting to see what has been forgotten.
this is a gem
Philadelphia summer music
Straight up!
@@hollyeckert357 we should hang out and rock out some day lol. I love the name holly so much that my 6 yo daughter is a HOLLY. Do you remember the Price Is Right Back in the Day? Remember the girl Holly the redhead that's where I fell in love with the name LOL
@@classifiedlonerider590 Sure do! Every day in the summer @11:00 (?), lol...and sick days, of course!
@@hollyeckert357 I live in montana now and have since 1988. But I miss the bucks county Philadelphia summers in 70s 80s. We had it good huh?
@@classifiedlonerider590 The best of all worlds!
So 80s it’s painful
Wow. Forgot this was in the neural hard drive.
A fantastic song.

Man...Robert Hazard was seriously tied in. Dude these people will sort it out soon enough. I miss you.
Entertainment my favorite thing ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉
One of the staples on WLIR in NY!
WMMR 93.3 FM in Philly played this a LOT
I played it constantly on WRMU-FM (college radio station in Ohio). Also heard it frequently on WNEW-FM.
EPIC
Genius.
I met his son back in 2018 and he became one of those dudes you’ll know you’re entire life. Fucking guy changed my life and he’s a great musician and an even better friend. Rex if you see this I fuckin love ya bud 🤘🏾☠️🤘🏾
This was when philly was cool to live in....not now! Man what the hell happened to music today?
One of the most British-sounding American early 80s hit I've ever heard. I'm British myself and this is probably the most interesting New Wave tracks I've discovered recently. Should have been released here in the UK.
Love the song a shit ton but....lets talk about those models? Who are these lovely ladies???? Enquiring minds want to know!!!!
Sequel - "We're riding on the Segway of life"
Morning zoo memories are precious "
Amazing!!!
Love you Keith R. !!
This was Robert Hazards one hit wonder
