Update! I did add a digital body to the mix and love the versatility. I might make an updated version of this video soon ☀️

I completely agree, that 55mm f/1.8 is a really special lens.

Best professional combined film/digital setup is to go with Canon EF mount, get a 6D or any of the 5D bodies, depending on your preference and add an EOS 1v or 1n to the mix, then you can share EF lenses across the two. Ideally get some lenses with IS, that'll work on the film bodies too.

In the 70s and 80x, I shot a number of family weddings on film. Expectations back then were lower as far as deliverables are concerned so it was no big deal. I used three motorized Nikons. In 2020, a buddy and I shot a small wedding on Leicas. That was fun but sometimes getting focus quickly and accurately could be difficult so I had an inexpensive Nikon N70 which offered AF, motorized advance and great flash. That was a great thing to have.
I follow a woman in Australia who only shoots small weddings and elopements. She charges $2k last time I looked and only shoots three or four rolls of consumer film and is kept quite busy with this business model. It’s one that I’m thinking would be fun to adopt because it sounds like a less stressed wedding in general.

You did a wonderful job shooting their wedding. The bride and groom certainly got their moneys worth. Good job! I agree with you on the Polaroid. They are just too inconsistent and finicky. Have you thought about trying the Fuji Instax cameras instead? The results are more consistent and reliable imho. Loving your content. Keep up the great work!

I did my first wedding on film, and I wasn't even 20 years of age. Of course, that was an eternity ago, digital photography was still in the realm of SF 😊
One Nikon F2 body, 24 & 50mm lenses, one small flash, and some 4 or 5 rolls of (ISO 100) film, tat's it.
If I could do it, anybody can...

Speaking of light meters. The one on the Mamiya 1000s is very good, easy to use and surprisingly accurate for a 80s tech. The one on the Spotmatic is awkward to use and very approximate, it can easily be fooled. You better trust your experience or a light meter app in difficult situations.

Back in the 60s and 70s we shot weddings with a Hasselblad and a 4x5 Speed Graphic for b&w shots, if requested.

I have a Spotmatic I use a Minolta light meter to meter with I have a number of Takumar M42 lenses including the 50mm1.4 Radioactive lens . I have a old Pentax AL 200T film camera flash I use for flash photography. My DSLR are all Pentax ( istDL, K100D, K3-11 & K3-3) so I have a lot of Pentax & Takumar lenses . I was witing for the new Pentax film camera when it came out I decided to refurbish my Spotmatic SP2 it needed new light seals and mirror bumper I got the supplies from Walmart for a few dollars insted of spending $ 500.00 for a half frame camera with a fixed lens I perfer a full frame film camera with interchangeable lenses

so what i should add is always have a back up of each film camera at an event. if i use the hasselblad 500cm, I also bring a second hasselblad & an extra lens just in case there is a problem (if a lens, film back or camera has a problem, the other is available). problems happen. what if two cameras jam? what will you do? As for 35mm cameras, you could use two spotmatic cameras & it will save you from having to switch lenses. mint ones with working meters are cheap as chips. one tip is always have extra batteries, film & flash. i like your point & shoot camera but couldn’t see the model. an olympus …? if you like full manual control on point & shoot & want flash option, try either the contax T (same lens as t2 but much cheaper if you don’t need AF. you can put on f5.6 aperture priority & shoot all day - one of best cams ever but get one in good condition for about $600). since you like wide shots, look at the roller qz35w or even t version. has a great flash unit, full auto/manual controls & is arguably better than any contax camera (g1 is nice too). sometimes they go at a discount but they are not hypes but better than leica minilux or t2.
film for weddings is possible. the leica photographer you spoke to just expressed his own insecurity at not knowing how to use film. that’s his problem. i also use leica digital & film, but for weddings i would prefer leica film such as the m3 (just add flash adapter). the lenses are good, but so are pentax.
whatever you use always have backups, at least two of every camera & different lens (could be wide angle & normal lens etc), 2 point & shoots, extra batteries, EXTRA film & whatever other tools you rely on. can’t afford to rely on an ebay discounted camera that hasn’t been serviced in years. a wedding is an event you can’t err on imo. nice work. danke

I can suggest two excellent lenses for your setup: Super Takumar 50mm F1.4 (the old 8-element version) and Mamiya 80mm F1.9. Both lenses are on the expensive side, but absolutely fantastic! I'll never forgive myself for selling my Mamiya 80/1.9. Highly recommended if you can find it at a not-too-crazy price.

I shot weddings with film and digital. They way you shoot film and digital are different. Also with film cameras can be different if you have auto focus cameras.
As of today I think film is fine for outdoor photos if you are shooting manual focus and know how to zone focus or are good at manual focus its ok. But you better know what your doing.
The downside of film photography for me is flash. Back in the day it was all direct flash. With digital I bounce the light. I'm on camera flash all day. Going up to ISO 6,400.
Direct flash I think is fun for that retro look but I don't like it for all my photos.

nothing wrong with sunny 16 rule etc but a used minolta iv or sekonic light meter is cheap (i.e. L358 or L308 are smaller) will ensure proper exposure with or without flash. not worth taking a chance. what is it $200 for a mint one? for weddings or events i bring film cameras that have been CLA’d or i know are properly working. a good digital back up is canon 5d mkii or iii. the kiss series or rebel? no. since you already have canon you should look at 1n film camera as uses same ef leases, has AF an excellent meter & is around $150. allows many good flash including ttl. doing this will prevent problems. glad to see your experience

Very cool :).. You are lucky you was not using my Bronica's .. If they have no battery the leaf shutters timer in the camera is all electronically controlled and without a battery both my ETRs release at full speed 1/500 sec at all times. Also I am shocked you used most of those cameras in bright sunlight with 400 speed film. I recently took my Spotmatic 500 out on a sunny day with 200 speed film and had to really close up the lens . Now with my cameras that only go up to around 1/500 sec on a sunny day I try and keep around 200 or lower speed film. Try out Portra 160 :).

Just letting you know since you shoot film drop of your film at the lab and don't ever mail it to a lab. Also ask if your lab has backup power. Joe Buissink Hollywood wedding photographer he was shooting some film at a wedding and at the lab the power went out and cooked his film. He had to use more of his second shooter photos.
I even know one wedding photographer that dropped their film at their studio in the door that has a little opening for mail. Some kids of the 4th of July put fire crackers in their and burnt their film.

Worked as an assistant for a wedding photographer back in the late 60s, early 70s. We developed all the rolls ourselves in his studio lab. If we screwed up, we had no one to blame but ourselves. Never had a glitch.

Most wedding photogs mail their film on different days so I’d a package gets lost, the whole job isn’t gone. Even dripping film off directly, I’d split the rolls, just in case.

Loved the video. Shooting a wedding on film 🎞 is actually good. Som many photographers edit their digital photos to look to look like film anyway.
How many rolls did you actually shoot? What were the film speeds? Did you shoot at. Ox speed or did you overexpose?

I did shoot a few weddings on film a few few years ago😂. Very stressful not knowing if they would come out well. I wouldn’t want to rely on film only if doing it as a professional, probably use both with the digital being a backup especially with a dual card slots camera. I would recommend a Nikon D780 so you can share certain Nikon [not all are compatible) lenses with a Nikon film body. Saves weight and cost of having extra lenses and flashes etc
