    You can easily get a great flash for film cameras. But wear the strap!

    Agree. I started with these in the mid-60s. Nothing feels better in the hand. But, wear the strap!

    Brilliant camera, indeed. Best M42 - apart from my Ricoh Singlex II 😂. No, just kidding. Back in the '70 I would have loved to own one. But those that had been available were too expensive for a pupil like me... so I just ended up with the Ricoh.

    Thank you for making this video. While pentax is have great functionality, do you think a waist level camera such as Nikon F3 could be a better option?

    Thanks for sharing this video! The Pentax Spotmatic series outsold Nikon and Canon combined in the 60's. The Spotmatic is credited with being the first TTL camera but it really wasn't, however the build quality, industrial style design and Art Deco details and of course the Takumar lenses made these Pentax cameras a success. The SP 500 has a shutter speed of 1/1000 without it being marked on the speed dial!

    I enjoyed your commentary on the Pentax Spotmatic. You are right, the Spotmatic is a great camera and a great value in film cameras. The Takumar lenses are pretty amazing optically. I have a YT channel where I mostly discuss analog and micro four thirds digital cameras along with shooting vintage lenses on mirrorless digital cameras. I used to own a camera repair shop and now enjoy bringing old cameras back to life so they can be used again.

The video about Pentax was really nice, that made me more assured in my choice to buy this camera for everyday use instead of my dead ones. I'm very interested in seeing your photography. Where can your film photos be found? I can share with you mine also, if you're interested. P.S. That's so funny that we have the same summer storm here, on the opposite side of earth Earth.

    Just a note about celebrities who use cameras, the Spotomatic was used by Paul McCartney and the Beatles in the early 60s; Paul has a touring exhibit of some the original shots from the time the Beatles first came to America.

    'She' has been my dream camera since I was 18, and that was in 1966. But with 1000 DM (German Deutschmarks) she was too expensive for a young student, so I had to make do with an ugly, technically backward Zeiss Ikon Contaflex Super B:-(( And when I started the pro job in 1971, I succumbed to the 1970's Nikon hype;-)) This was o.k., because a lens bayonet is simply better to handle than the M42 screw mount, and the Nikons were much more robust, pure heavy duty gear than these petite Pentaxes. But in 2023, I remembered my dream camera and purchased such a Spotmatic SP as a 'Black Beauty' on Ebay for 80 euros, the 1.4/50 SMC-Takumar included. As experienced in photography for almost 70 years, I don't need light metering, so battery problems don't matter to me. Unfortunately, due to the M42 lens connection, the majority of Spotmatics were not equipped with alternative original lenses, and therefore those wonderful lenses like the Super Takumar 1.9/85 or even more so the SMC-Takumar 1.8/85 are very rare and expensive today. It's a great pity because especially the 85mm Takumars are outstanding lenses with stunning overall performance and a particularly pleasant colour rendering. @philosimot

    I have a Spotmatic I use a Minolta light meter to meter with I have a number of Takumar M42 lenses including the 50mm1.4 Radioactive lens . I have a old Pentax AL 200T film camera flash I use for flash photography. My DSLR are all Pentax ( istDL, K100D, K3-11 & K3-3) so I have a lot of Pentax & Takumar lenses . I was witing for the new Pentax film camera when it came out I decided to refurbish my Spotmatic SP2 it needed new light seals and mirror bumper I got the supplies from Walmart for a few dollars insted of spending $ 500.00 for a half frame camera with a fixed lens I perfer a full frame film camera with interchangeable lenses

    I have not shot film since 2005 when i bought my first DSLR Pentax of course. Insted of buying the new Pentax 17 i decided to recondition my Spotamatic my film preferences was Kodak 400 i kept in one camera body a Pentax ME Super program the other camera Kodak 1600 the film i used to photograph the Sistine Chaple when you could photograph it. I perfer to use my Minolta light meter for metering over the camera light meter as i feel it is more accurate.

    Just ran across your channel and it’s really good. I enjoy film photography again after 20+ years of going digital. I watched one of your older postings on shooting film and the K1000. Best luck in NYC and welcome to the neighborhood. I’m not a New Yorker but go there a lot being in NJ. And yes, NY people get a bad rap.

    I can’t deny that the spotmatic was a long lasting camera with great image quality from the lenses they made. However, I never liked the screw mount lens and always preferred a bayonet lens. Spotmatics also used stop down metering which means the lens is stopped down and the screen got dark, so you could take a metre reading so focussing was very difficult. I always preferred open aperture metering like Nikon or Minolta or other cameras that had that same system. Eventually Pentax went with the K mount which was a bayonet mount and open aperture metering on the ME and other cameras. Lately, though I bought some Pentax lenses and enjoy using them on my Nikon Z cameras, which gives them stabilization plus the adaptor is bayonet are very cheap so I just bought an adaptor for each lens. So no fumbling with a screw mounts which when I worked at a Camera Store, I dropped a 50 1.4 and bent the front of the lens thinking it started to thread onto the camera, but it didn’t. Most of the old Spotmatics,the metres are not working anymore because the old CDS sells don’t last forever. So when you buy one you’re mainly working with a Manual camera with no light meter. Having a camera with 1000 of a second shutter speed is also limiting when working with large aperture lenses. So old isn’t always better and cheap is not always better. Newer cameras help you grow beyond all the old cameras which were limiting. Just my two cents. Regards Gerry

    I can suggest two excellent lenses for your setup: Super Takumar 50mm F1.4 (the old 8-element version) and Mamiya 80mm F1.9. Both lenses are on the expensive side, but absolutely fantastic! I'll never forgive myself for selling my Mamiya 80/1.9. Highly recommended if you can find it at a not-too-crazy price.

  • @avg6764
    @avg6764 4 місяці тому

    Speaking of light meters. The one on the Mamiya 1000s is very good, easy to use and surprisingly accurate for a 80s tech. The one on the Spotmatic is awkward to use and very approximate, it can easily be fooled. You better trust your experience or a light meter app in difficult situations.

    You are very brave to a) shoot a wedding! b) shoot a wedding on film!! c) shoot a wedding with manual cameras!!! d) shoot a wedding without a light meter!!!! Your photos turned out fantastic! Thank you for the interesting and inspirational video.

    Because camera snobs have to fuel their ego. If it’s not Leica, Nikon, or Rolliflex you can’t feel superior. The Spotmatic was a breakthrough camera, outselling most of the others put together. It was used by professionals and serious amateurs alike. It was well built and there are loads of them still performing today, I have two of them a 65 SP and a 74 SPF and I use them all the time, the SP with a zoom and the SPF with primes. I love them and the next owners will be my children, because they will be with me till I expire! PS. The Beatles used Pentax!
