Also, keep an emergency pee bottle, and don't talk if you feel threatened by an animal just outside your tent, if it was a bear he'd know exactly where you are.
I remember when i was 12. My grandfather and i were on a section hike of the A.T. Somewhere in North Carolina. A bear was outside our tent and was poking his nose up against the tent. My Grandfather being old school just punched the Bears nose through the tent wall. and you could hear it crying and crashing away from our site.
Haha my parents told me a story of them hiking through the alps and searching for a spot to put up their tent while it was getting dark. So they stumbled upon a grassy patch and just put up their tent and went to bed. The other morning they were woken up by a very loud scratching on their tent and a massiv shadow!! So my dad poked his head out the tent to take a look whats going on, since there are not many dangerous animals in central europe. It was a cow licking the condensation water off the tent :'D They put up their tent on a pasture.
You meant a jehovahs false witness, the jws dont preach biblical salvation. They teach their own nonbiblical doctrine which will damn you to hell if you believe it.
I almost choked to death laughing on my vodka and water after that one. You never know how quickly death can come, but dying laughing is a good start to the whole experience don't you think?
A college professor told us a story about how when she was tent camping in Tanzania as part of a guided tour a male lion plopped down and took a nap literally leaning on her tent, while she was in it. Luckily the tent didn't buckle or collapse. She got no sleep and concentrated fully on being as still and quiet as possible while still needing to breathe. I hope I never know terror like that.
That's probably my biggest downfall as a camper, is my fear of the dark. During the day I would love to see a bear up close, but at night I don't even wanna see a raccoon. I know they won't attack and are usually timid, but my imagination just takes over in the dark.
I remember being scared shitless when i heard the screaming sounds of mountain lions near my tent, no weapon no nothing, i was just laying there with pure fear 😣
I had a strange noise scratching outside my shelter once, and I was kept awake thinking the worst, as the scratching sounded louder and meaner every time it occurred. I stayed awake, imagining the worst, until dawn. At daylight, I went outside, apprehensive, looking all around me for some monster to pounce. I started a small fire and boiled water. As I sipped my tea, I heard that same scratch again. Just behind me, when I turned, I saw....a squirrel. A silly squirrel had been busy burying it's food stash all night. Sound is amplified at night, especially near water. Also, gravel makes a lot of noise. Near water, deer roam, as do raccoons, skunks, porcupines and yes, bears also, to drink from the lake. Just thought I'd share that. Imagination is your worst enemy out there.
Hahah so true Marcel. Similarly, on my first solo backcountry trip, I lost a lot of sleep to a mouse. The imagination can be much scarier than reality.
Tea? There’s your problem! Get some coffee. The squirrel has more nuts than you 😄. Just messin’ with ya! This is why I like Arlo cams or something. I here a noise. I wanna see the animals. I love watching them. Then I go back to sleep. I also want to know if it’s not a human! If it’s a shady ass human they’ll get a verbal warning. If they don’t leave. Then I’ll come out of my tent. They don’t want me coming out of my tent. After the verbal warning I’ll be standing there in my boxers and a hoody pointing my freedom dispenser at him. They don’t leave? They get 1 warning shot. Just 1.
I had a terrifying tent camping bear experience many years ago in WNY . My boyfriend and my 7 year old son were camping on his family's plot of land on a cliff area of lake Erie. We got dropped off and we made s'mores and hot dogs and had a campfire and some beers andy son had been in the tent sleeping for a couple hours and then we went in the tent to sleep ... All throughout the night before we went to bed I would walk back past the small clearing we had our camp and into the woods and would pee behind a large tree. I kept hearing stuff but I just assumed it was a deer or squirrel , I wasn't concerned or scared one bit. I had probably only been asleep for 15 minutes or so and I was awoken By footsteps outside my tent and very close like right outside my tent. I just thought my boyfriend Was out there pissing, getting some water or chips so I payed my head went down and rolled over and saw that my boyfriend was sleeping laying on the other side of my son... And there was still someone or something walking around my tent and camp and at that moment I became absolutely petrified!!! I very quietly woke him up and whispered very softly to listen. Right then, the footsteps were coming right up to my tent and then around to the side of tent where our heads were, and it started breathing very heavy and It's nose was up against the tent fabric and I then knew it was a bear! We were shitting bricks and luckily my son didn't wake up. The bear then walked away and slowly back into the woods but then returned a couple of minutes later and got in our cooler and took hotdogs, chips, crackers and was having a buffet. I looked out a 2 inch tiny section of the window through the screen and it was a bear and it was big!!! So, I started yelling and clapping and that startled him and he took off. But he came back 2 more times and repeated this and it was so terrifying and could have very quickly became a nightmare
I had this on a nights camp in Sweden (I'm from UK and don't know the wildlife there - but know wolves have recently been reintroduced). The animals nose kept prodding my tent to the extent that at one point it touched me through the canvas. I figured the best bet was to get out and confront it with my knife as if it's a wolf pack, a tent isn't much good compared to threatening them. Anyway, it turns out it was an inquisitive goat 😂
Your hatchet would do the trick, but I like to keep a knife on me when I sleep. My thinking is that if an animal did charge the tent, the poles would be quick to collapse and finding the zipper for the door would be nearly impossible. Quickest way to get out in an emergency like that would be to cut the wall open, lest you become a nylon cased sausage.
Guess you had an experience hitting a predatory animal with your infamous knife or hatchet huh... Great bullshit. You watch too many movies. Could you film one for us to view?
Over the past few years I've started setting up a trail camera outside my tent or hammock to capture what (if anything) comes lurking around while I sleep. After a winter trip a couple years ago in Algonquin I got home and plugged in the SD card and realized a wolf had been hanging around my hot tent completely unbeknownst to me. I often wonder what other things were there that I never even knew about! Also, it's amazing how something the size of a squirrel can manifest into bigfoot or a massive bear in your mind when you're alone at night. The forest sure takes on a whole new vibe at night.
Wowww no way!! That is incredible! I gotta think about getting a trail cam... Lol so true, what the mind conjures up in the darkness is usually much scarier than reality.
While wilderness camping I awoke one night to a growling snorting sound. I was so terrified that I could feel my pulse beating in my teeth. Next thing I woke up and it was morning. I think I passed out from sheer terror lol.
@@cccp319801spetsnaz says someone whose never hunted big game and seen a bear go ramping after getting struck by a bullet... try taking down a bear or a moose in close quarters with a 9mm and it would almost certainly be the last thing you'd ever attempt.
Speaking of remote camping, I slept in my car off a remote back road in the mountains. It was hot so I cracked my window. I woke up to a green friendship bracelet dangling from the cracked window. So weird. I was tucked far back a series of back dirt roads in a remote area. 🤷
super creepy because you slept through it and you have to wonder how long someone stood there and what they were doing walking around in the night. You didn't even hear a vehicle?
@@LostLakes Yes it was but it was amazing being so close. And after at the end of our hike we got to see the mom fishing and the cubs playing in the lake.
I wear earplugs when I solo. either I sleep right through the noise, or I get eaten. I do bring firecracker with me, but I should probably invest in some bear spray.
once I was camping solo when, in the dead of night I was woken up by the shrill shound of a woman crying outside my tent. She wasn't just crying, she was almost wailing, so you can picture my spine getting frozen and all the hair on my body standing. After only a few seconds my mind was totally blown when the sound of the woman's wailing started sounding more like a baby crying. I was so scared that my ears started ringing and I could feel myself almost fainting. The madness of it is, when the baby crying began to sound more like the growling and snapping of small dogs, and I actually almost pissed myself, but my mind finally shot me an old memory of something I had read: that sometimes coyotes sound like women or children crying. To this day I tell myself what I heard were coyotes, because what else.
Search for foxes sounding like women screaming. Not all the videos are the same and sometimes it sounds very much like what you described! So I definitely could’ve been a fox. He sounds so petrifying that I know if I was in the Woods by myself camping at heard it I would also be shitting myself.
@@Live2ride2live54321 the funny thing, my mind was grasping for straws to explain what I heard. Until this day I still shiver sometimes, rememnering how my body got cold and my ears were ringing. Normally I'm not easily scared, and I know how to deal with animals fairly well as I worked in animal rescue. I don't know what I heard that night, but my instinct most definitely told me that I was in grave danger. So glad I got out safely, but I am still feeling the emotional trauma.
Jon, I have had similar experiences. What you did-playing it cool, letting the bear know you were there and awake, and preparing your defenses-was appropriate. I am glad you posted this as well since it might show those reticent about camping that being prepared and in tune with your environment is always better than being trigger-happy. While I do not discount the utility of tools (like firearms) I also know that our most impressive tool, as you've illustrated here, is our brain. Take care.
I almost cut myself out of my tent at 2 in the morning once.. Thought it was a black bear encounter turned out to be a golden retriever sticking it's head into my tent.. Terrified me none the same!
In '92, I took the boys camping by a small resort. It was a delightful little lodge with a lake nearby to swim. We had hiked and eaten well so we were pretty tired. I had the large-ish family dog in my tent and the two 12 year olds, my son and a friend, had a tent beside me. Suddenly, there was a commotion and Zoom! The dog was out the screen door without it being open. Much clicking and flapping before the dog came back. He had got rid of a swan that was sneaking around. We know now, keep big dogs and swans apart. Nobody was hurt. This video was a bit "Blair Witchy".
This happened to me when I was backpacking solo. I had my earbuds in and just finished a movie around 11pm. When I took the earbuds out I could hear something right outside my tent. I was probably a good 2.5 hours away from the nearest road on foot and knew if anything happened I had no help anywhere nearby. I could hear whatever it was breathing and sniffing around my tent and it sounded heavy. Based on the breathing alone I'm guessing it was several hundred pounds. I tracked it by sound as it finally walked off, waited 15 minutes and got out of my tent to try and find tracks. I really wanted to know what it was but I couldn't find any good tracks. There were nothing but cold wet leaves on the ground and no tracks. Eventually I fell asleep but every sound after that woke me up.
I had almost the same experience. It could be deer, they like to sniff and snort around campsites for some reason and aren't as skittish as you would think.
I don't see how aMedieval suit would help. img.favpng.com/4/1/2/middle-ages-renaissance-english-medieval-clothing-peasant-knight-png-favpng-2LBFJGLy8xa4XgAQF9psHUT6k.jpg
I always tell myself that bears are typically very quiet, until they rip open the cooler or something similar. If I hear something moving around, it's most likely a squirrel. They're the noisiest things in the whole north woods! That said, a couple years ago I woke in the middle of the night to hear something large splashing around in the river we were camped by. Since it was during a salmon run there was a possibility if was a bear. After a half hour I decided I'd never get to sleep unless I found out. Grabbed my pepper spray and crawled out of the tent. Turned out to be a moose feeding on the aquatic plants. Watched her for about 10 minutes (July in Alaska, so never completely dark) before she winded me or something and took off.
Bears are indeed really quiet, rounded a corner once and came face to face with one, we both scared each other and the mf slapped me in the face before taking off. I couldn't coordinate my legs to walk properly after that for a good 15 minutes
It was my first time camping and I was with a few friends up in the mountains in Virginia. I was a bit on edge from being out in the dark and remote forest several miles from any sort of civilization. I was also sleeping in a hammock so I felt extremely vulnerable. Sometime during the night I was woken up by the scream of a mountain lion. I had never heard a mountain lion before so to me it sounded like the Blair Witch was out there killing some poor lady. Scariest experience of my life I nearly shat myself. I sucked up my pride and ran into my friends tent to sleep there the rest of the night. There was no way I was staying out in the open lol.
My brother and I camp on the Virginia mountains too and he used to use the hammock. I called it the bear burrito lol. I've never heard a mountain lion but the bobcats will scare you enough to soften up your stool.
When I was building my cabin up by Kirkland Lake I had a bear walk by my tent. I did use my key to set off my car alarm and it ran away. Came back about a half hour later and I set it off again but this time it ran a little way turned and Huffed. Eventually it left crashing through the woods. Bears don't like car alarms.🐻😲
@@LostLakes I always carry a shotgun around my cabin so no concern now. I had it in the tent with me too. Never had to use it but peace of mind. Always give them a way out and they will take it. They're mostly just curious I've found.
I quite know the feeling! Woke up in the middle of the night once in the tent, something walking arround the tent making noises för about 2 hours. Scary thing was I wasn´t sure if it was a human or animal for the first part. No predatory animals in that region. Another time I awoke once again in the middle of the night (bear country this time, Canada), REALY had to pee. I finaly did it after having waited for an excruciating while. In the morning I found out from my mates that 2 bears had been spotted passing between our tents about the same time I went out :D
I do know about animals outside your tent at night. I do solo backpack with my golden retriever. I woke up one night to him standing and growling at the wall of the tent. Probably just a racoon outside but you never know. I had my bear spray and hatchet in hand. I like the way you maintained yourself. Koodos
My friend just sings Yankee Doodle Dandy. It works good. He said when the noise died off he poked his head out of the tent and seen it was clear, all our tents were gone too. We couldn't take anymore Yankee Doodle Dandy. Try it next time.
Jesus Mary and Joseph!! THIS is 2/3 of the reason I am so happy I'm getting my old inherited VW camper up and running again! I'm female and love to camp alone but I've had one too many bad nights like this one. Well most nights aren't this bad as this one but I still get very bearanoid regardless and am sure every crack of a twig or thump in the dirt is an effing bear. Actually one time I was camping on the Snake River (talk about black bear territory!), alone in my tent with two guy friends camping in their own tent about 10 or 15 feet away. On gravel, like you. I woke to the crunching gravel and heard several feet walking slowly like a big heavy animal - not two human feet. But it sounded like more than one. My friends instantly stopped snoring (tho later denied waking at all). I heard what sounded like one bear approaching one side of the tent (right next to my body), one on the other and one further behind. I'd gone to sleep bearnoid cause a bartender in town casually mentioned the bears often come down the hill at night scavenging for food and to be sure to pack ours away in the car at night. He said if one attacks, just look big and scream and throw things at it. That man effed up my whole night. After dinner I washed every dish clean as can be, double wrapped any scraps, locked it all in the car and made us all wash our hands and faces and brush teeth. Then I slept with one of those big magna (?) flashlights right next to my sleeping bag. When I heard the crunching gravel sound (about 5am but no light in sky I noticed yet) I very slowly grabbed the flashlight and slinked far down into my sleeping bag and held my breath as still as could be. I wanted to call no attention to myself. I was lying on my stomach and ready to fight with my stupid flashlight but my heart was beating so loudly that I was sure they'd hear it or feel it through the ground and they'd sense my fear and decide it was safe to attack! The bear closest to me - I KNEW it had to be a bear - then pushed its nose INTO my tent and sorta scraped it alongside it and it pushed a little into my sleeping bag as it went and made loud sniffing sounds. I thought I might actually die from a heart attack, truly. Then they passed and I didn't move an ounce until I heard nothing else for probably 10 solid minutes. I slowly came up to breathe (but not too far) then the emotional exhaustion probably made me sorta pass out. My friends said they didn't believe me (hmmm...) and as we were driving away some people way down by the entrance of the gravel riverside spot waved us down and said that they'd watched 3 bears walk past one of our tents early in the morning. They said they got up on their camper with binoculars to watch cause they walked past their camper first, which woke them!!! I knew my (chicken) friends were in the next tent over. If I'd been in your situation - truly alone - I would have been absolutely beside myself. I probably would have done what I did the other time. I think I'd be afraid to talk. Ever since that time I now always have the noise horn thingie like you do, a huge long hunter's type of knife, a flashlight with the setting that flashes blinding light, a sharp-edged hiking pole, haha, and a big ass can of bear spray. I camped alone last summer again (glutton for punishment) but just on Mt Hood at Timothy Lake and had all those things surrounding me. And still, every noise just about did me in. I agree the pepper spray would be a last resort but the first thing I'd probably use after the horn if I came face to face with it. I'm not a gun person but would be willing to learn how to use a shot gun however I'd never, ever own one, while my boys still live at home. And they say anything smaller than a shot gun would just piss a bear off. So this will have to do for now. Ugh can't wait for the camper!!! Sorry that was such a looooong story.
dude same i’m just watching scary backpacking stories and got scared of my gamer chair on my room. i live in indiana btw to absolutely nothing to worry about other than my neighbor’s dog.
When I was camping in Southern India I got up at around 5 in the morning to go the bathroom. When I stepped out the tent there was cobra right next to where our fire had burnt out. Maybe it was attracted to the heat? I dunno. I had never been so scared in my life.. But thankfully I resisted the urge to scream like a little boy.
I can relate. I was woken up one night to sniffing next to my head while solo camping in Co!orado a number of years ago. I instantly sat up and started beating the walls of my tent. That worked for me. Whatever it was ran off. I don't want to speculate on what It was, but it was big enough to crash through the bushes as it ran off. I guess beating the walls of my tent made the tent appear alive and big. I didn't sleep a wink after that worrying it would come back. High-tailed it out of there when the sun came up.
what seems to keep the critters away is my old work boots,,I leave em outside the tent and the whole nite is quiet, but when I awake I find the flowers and plants all dead!
I took my kids (4 of them and me all alone, THATS scary lol) camping and in the middle of the night while raining something laid down at my feet outside the tent. It felt the size of a medium to large dog maybe. No idea what it was. I was too scared to move of course and it left after about ten mins.
Hahaha that IS scary. Oh and the mystery animal! Any chance of sleep paralysis? I've had it at home and in the tent and at least a couple of times I felt a weight on me. I felt like I was awake
Hahah well if it's any comfort to you, I've done this hundreds of nights and this is the only time anything like this ever happened, and nothing even happened ultimately :)
Bahahahaha! Last week I solod Tahoe and once, just once I heard a bear fighting with another and scared me to the point I think I lost two years of my life.
Know the feeling been in that situation. In very remote places. I notice a lot of people joke about this situation. When it’s happening to you it’s no joke. Like your new name and your new videos keep moving forward great job. Enjoy the wild outdoors be safe.
I had a crazy experience once camping in Algonquin park while I was sleeping,my friend and I spent weekend camping at Rock lake in Algonquin park one summer about 5 years ago and we were using my green laser pointer to point at a ton of objects we observed moving about and flashing lights in the sky as if they were communicating with each other so after this amazing experience we hit tent to sleep it was a two room with a front screen porch for bugs.We settled in for the night put the fire out and went to sleep.....sort of. I awoke to my zippers on my tent being open,at whatever time it was, it was still pitch black out.I had my eyes still closed thinking it was my friend next to me who maybe woke up to take a leak,he enjoyed drinking so he had a bit of a buzz on and I thought it was him staggering over to wrong side of tent,I heard a long ziiiiiiip then another long ziiiiiip and you know when camping I like to meet the zippers in the middle anyways I said out loud,"hey Brad, wrong side bro as I heard the zipping of tent door opening I repeated but louder hey Brad!!no response So I opened my eyes and to my total absolute terrifying sight was some creature which looked like it was half in the tent crouched down like a human would that dropped something on a floor and was fucking staring at me face to face with huge glowing green eyes!!!!!I freaked out and slapped the tent floor and ground as hard as I could and like a bullet this creature took off into the darkness with branches and shit breaking Now I have camped solo since but not there I can't even honestly say what the hell it was but I have never heard of an animal nicely opening the zipper of a tent,I tell you what I was scared! Over years of thinking what this could be I narrowed it down in the crypto zoology category and ufolgy. 1-alien or E.T. entity 2-adolescent sasquatch Final conclusion was whatever it was it was curious and looking at me it did not harm me but sure startled the shit out of me!Cheers hope you liked this true event story.
@@LostLakes Honestly I recommend trying out Rock Lake in Algonquin,my friend and I went end of June and it was something else camping there and the beautiful lakes and trails right there. We rented kayaks and through the water system travelled 3 or 4 lakes without portaging.
i travelled for 12 years free camping in the bush wile fruit picking in australia .one night i was awoken at 3 am camping extremly remote with something lightly just touching the 2 person dome tent i was in, then it started to gently push on the tent gently to start with but getting more courage with each push until it had the dome tent collapsed down flat with me in it , something with big hands running them over me i was wrapped in a winter doona and just layed there i had no knife no big stick or any other weapons apart from my fists. now i don't run from fights never have never will .but all i could do was lay there frozen on the spot. i just played dead and hoped it didn't want to find out what it was feeling thru the dome and doonah . after maybe 6 seconds maybe ten it got up tent went back to dome then it just stood there for maybe 30 seconds silently listening then it walked away on two legs i lay there frozen not wanting to get out where am i running to im in the middle of no where no car on a push bike .after that i bought a vw combie van. i now have 3 kids and a family man and still go out camping but always take my bull terrier, knife ,axe ,machete ,bow
I was in the north end of algonquin last weekend. A bear knocked the guy line off of my rain fly. I was solo. I was able to muster a ( manly?) Scream to scare it off but it hung around awhile...I feel ya
@Gray Man I don't live in a city. I have had kangaroos around the house since I was a kid. So either you have thousands of dollars worth of rounds, or you're lying.
Similar thing happened to my gf & I on our last camping trip. Coincidentally enough it was just south of your current location (we were camping on general use Crown Land on Big Basswood Lake near Thessalon/Little Rapids). We are experienced hikers and love roughing it in the woods. On our 5th night in the bush a large animal was rustling around our tent for about an hour. We're quite certain it was a black bear. We see black bears all of the time while we are hiking and foraging. If you respect them and realize you're in THEIR house, they'll respect you. On a sidenote both my gf & I are gun owners but we NEVER take our firearms with us unless we are specifically going hunting. We only hunt for small game though (partridge and grouse). Love the videos man.
First time I ever camped was in the Great Smokies, I got to the trail head about two hrs before the sun was setting and grabbed my backpack and started to head to my campsite which was about an hour and a half hike. When I got to my campsite I realized I forgot my headlamp in my truck. I had just enough time to get a fire going and set up my tent. As it got darker, I got pretty scared, this is a guy that can throw his hands. I played worship music on my phone as I fell asleep and woke up to the most picturesque scene. It even included a deer in my campsite. I’ve heard many people after so long you just get used to it and the fear subsides. Cheers!
I solo camp 90% of the time and every tent I found had maybe 1 or 2 doors or 1 door 1 window and it frustrated me but finally, I found a tent that has 2 doors, 2 windows, so you can see all directions, and I love it. At least I know what's gonna eat me lol. Course I am lucky, I live in Iowa and I do carry, and no I'm not knocking anyone for not and I know you are in Canada, but it's a freedom here so far and at my old age, I appreciate any edge I can get lol. Had a huge pack of coyotes get pretty close Saturday night, but thankfully they moved off, I did considered just during the gun into the ground too scare them, but waited, and they moved along finally. I don't have any pets but my buddy was camping the last month with his dog and they came so the way up into camp surrounding his tent, he yelled and used a big stick to scare them off, thankfully it worked. He had to laugh because his dog slept through the whole thing, great watch dog huh lol. She's old though. Take care!
We have Wolves and Bears everywhere up here in Northern Minnesota. I'm not overly fearful of them. However, when I'm in the Colorado mountains, big kitty cats scare me without a doubt. I carry too, full size glock .40. Grizzly country is on my bucket list. Any luck and I'll be bowhunting elk in it soon enough.
Hahaha actually the mouse (or something small) was a bonus...just touched my tent. The pacing was something larger for sure...anything from a beaver to a bear.
“I’m an idiot”. Lol couldn’t help but laugh at your pure honesty. Happened my first overnight camp. Heard pack of wolves, could of sworn they’d come for us, I had to pee 4 times due to the fear! I Finallly pulled my sleeping bag over my ears and fell asleep. Never went back but I do need to get over this fear of night camping!!
When I watch a video like this it reminds me of growing up in a rural area. We didn’t have cellphones, even today I lose cell service visiting home. If we bothered to take the time to call 911 chances are response time 30min best. Somehow my family and everyone I knew growing up kept their homes and cars unlocked. 13yrs old home alone with my 2 yr old sister during the day. 3 men came to the house and sat in our driveway. Our dog was going nuts and wouldn’t let them out of their truck. I came to the door and they said they were there to put the lightning rods on our house. The dogs hair was standing on end, yellow lab and usually chill. I got the rifle and came outside and they left. I dont even think I mentioned it to my parents.
Nothing like the good old boom boom stick when camping. My dad used to take us camping way out there but we always felt safe because he was always packing some good heat.
I was in the Army for 26 years unless we were deployed for real business all we had were blanks. I slept on the ground from Alaska to NC, all across the US and a dozen foreign countries. Been bitten by bugs, snakes, ants and threatened by Moose and Bear, had the occasional Mountain lion track near my camp. Guess I was lucky, huh
The first time I went camping about 7 bears came through the the campground at night, one right past the tent I was in with another person. The second time I went camping I was in a clausterphobic one person tent on the edge of a campground. Three times something heavy stomped by. The third time it stopped right outside my tent and I was frozen in terror for half an hour before I realized it was a deer munching on the bushes next to my tent.
a couple years ago I went camping in traverse city Michigan. we camped in the campsites that don't have any power. the only power source was the bathrooms. these are also big sites with like 6 or 7 sand plots for people to put their tents. my friend and I stayed in the same tent and we took the farthest sand plot away from others and it was a little bit into the woods but you could still see us it wasn't like covered by trees or whatever. but it was raining and we were playing cards till like 2am. we started to hear something rub up against our tent and we heard footsteps. at first, we thought it was my cousin messing with us, but after listening to the light footsteps circling us we knew it wasn't him. I was both scared and excited because nothing like this has ever happened to me before. we ended up calling that same exact cousin who we thought was messing with us to come out and save us lol. my cousin came out of his tent in his boots, a bucket hat for the rain, a whistle, a broom, and his phone for a flashlight. it was funny to see but anyway, it turned out to be a coyote circling us. and then to make this story even longer, my other cousin woke up in the middle of the night having to use the bathroom, she didn't want to wake up her husband so she went alone because it was actually really close. but she said she heard the coyotes howling off to the area my friend and I were tenting at. she said she booked it to the restrooms and because it was raining the lights were out to make things worse. she turned out fine though thankfully. but yeah, wish I got it on video but I was using my phone as a flashlight and was too scared to turn it off.
All fun and games til your in his situation. Had this happen to me front country camping at Bruce peninsula in Ontario Canada. Those minutes seem like hours. Props to you for staying calm. My buddy luckily found his car keys as the animal (to this day haven’t heard a grunt like that) came up to our tent. Had to call 911 to let em know in case things went south we had no spray, or hatchet.
It was a creature that supposedly doesn’t exist. Thousands and thousands of people encounter them in similar situations. Pacing around stalking them without ever showing themselves.
That happened to me up north and I really had to go out to take a leak after a long night drinking , But heard heavy breathing by my tent and finally a half hour later I heard him in the woods leaving and I checked for prints around the site and sure enough it was a bear . All I had for protection was my empty bear cans .
Bear spray actually attracts bears, if it’s sprayed on an object or on the ground, etc. However, the verdict is still out if unused cans attract bears. Tom Smith, a phd who studies bears says unused bear spray is ok in tents but sprayed bear spray needs to go in a bear bag
Good info. My first solo trip I herd foot steps up to the tent, then the yells of a fox. They sound like a mountain lion to the rookie solo camper. I had to pee then too. I unlocked the car and just as I go to pull the door handle, it locks. Good but steep learning curve. Thanks for sharing.

Something similar happened to me, I was in PA when during the night I heard brushing up aganst my tent, sniffing, and pacing. I knew this area had coyotes. Being a noob. I did not even have a pocket knife. I stayed silent and still, and just prayed. Thankfully, I'm still here
Wow...I used to do lots of solo wilderness camping in NW Ontario (Woodland Caribou area) and I was several days deep on some seriously remote lake camped on a small island when I was awakened in my tent by a large creature swimming towards my island. I could hear it breathing heavily as it came ever closer...I had absolutely nothing in my tent in the way of protection...I could see out of my tent through the netting in the door but it was pointed in the opposite direction as well as being pitch black outside...the beast reached my island and came ashore on some flat rocks next to my tent and just stood there breathing heavily while the water dripped off it's fur on to the rocks like a small waterfall...this went on for a good 5-10 minutes as I sat frozen in my tent...finally, it just wandered off to the bigger side of the island and crashed through the bush and was gone...even though I never saw it, I could tell it was huge by the location of it's breathing and the massive amount of water that dripped off it's body...most likely a moose but could have been a woodland caribou as well...I was more apprehensive than afraid as anything that could have happened, even accidentally, could have been catastrophic that far into the bush when you are alone...very exciting though...selah

I am about to go solo camping again. My first time I did the same you did and just talked my way to sleep. It was so scary but I was dumb enough to leave my tent. I figured that if I go, I would go fighting. I am not sure what I would do if there was something other than an animal. I was given advice from a viewer to make a perimeter around my tent. Sounds like a good idea. Great video, at least I know I am not the only one afraid at night.
I would suggest a second can of bear spray too. Especially if on the trail. Sometimes one can isn’t enough for one encounter but you could also have another encounter afterwards.
just a suggestion, it is good to keep a knife out too, sometimes bears have been known to pounce on a tent, nothing like being stuck in a plastic wrap, at least you can quickly rip a hole in the tent and quickly get out to deploy your bear spray, if need be :)
@@78dogrun a gun just makes it personal with a bear, and you do not wanna make things personal with the largest terrestrial carnivore that isn't megatherium or deinosuchus/purussaurus, some people need to learn that a gun doesn't make them immortal, experts say bear spray is better than a gun
Lol... i was just solo camping new years day eastern Algonquin Park middle of nowhere. Kept waking up at all hours of the night hearing different noises. And like you i had some weapons 😂 sog lightweight axe with a long handle. An extremely bright flashlight and i kept my tents' light on. And i had a gerber skinning blade and an airhorn. So i felt protected. Woke up 6am and only saw a fox lmao.
Two things that are nerve-wracking to wake up too in a tent, #1 the threat of a wild animal pacing outside your tent #2 the buzzing of a mosquito in your ear! 😂
I had something similar happen to me when I went camping with some friends. As I’m highly allergic to any animal with fur, I woke up sneezing horribly and heard the sounds of pacing all around the tent (we stupidly took down the tent walls blocking the mesh windows to let some air flow through). Figured it wasn’t anything big because there was multiple animals (from the sounds at least) and my sneezing continued for a few hours until I fell back asleep. Found out in the morning that someone threw away some Burger King in our trash bag hanging from a tree, so probably some raccoons ransacking for a burger 😂
Once, me and my friend were camping outside in the wilderness and if you lived in Slovakia, you would know that brown bears are pretty common(not enough space for them due to deforestation, so they move towards human dwellings where are plenty of food sources= number of bears keeps rising). It happened in spring which means that bears are looking for some nutrients after hybernation. Although, we managed to hang our food in tree crown about 50 meters from our tent, we were not absolutely sure if it would helps. The "fun time" started few minutes after we went sleep. Something huge rubbed against our 25 years old tent which scared shit out of us. Me and my friend were no able to breath for about half a minute and instead we were listening what a bear or wendigo or any kind of entity was doing outside. In next five minutes the same thing has repeated dozen of times. Suddenly, some giant beast shaked with our tent like crazy and just then we found out that it was nice mountain breeze(we were camping at the top of small hill). Despite of our great discovery we both refused to prove if we are right :D At least we managed to fall asleep with mantra spinning in our minds:"it is just gentle wind, enjoy the nature! it is just a gen.." (sorry for all of the mistakes I have made, but my excuse is that I am not native speaker :D)
Yeah had a similar thing happened to me was camping alone. I heard something walking around around 4am didn't sleep for a hour then fucking out of nowhere I heard "hey mind coming out". I had my 45 on me because of bears I rack it and hear running I freak out and open my tent and just see a youngish guy running. keep in mine I'm about a hour and a half on a motorcycle from anything and the guy was walking in pitch dark with no camping/hiking gear
@@WhimsyWendy idk happen to me 3yrs ago. It was the number one thing that made me stop camping alone. I mean I thought it was a bear or deer that was just walking around my camp I was freaking out then his monotone voice piercing the silent night made me shit my self. I spent the rest of the night standing and sitting next to my fire because I couldn't fall back to sleep. The only regret I have was not recording it I had my phone on me but was to scare/idiot to pull it out and record it
@@tsundokus - If I were in your shoes I would have packed up after the guy ran off, hopped on my motorcycle, and hightail it out of dodge. Maybe the guy didn't want to scare you so he used that monotone voice which sounded creepy under the circumstances and the click of your gun ended up terrifying him more than he frightened you. It would be funny on the slim chance the guy writes on a UA-cam video camping section about his experience trying to (get help? borrow weed because his supply ran out?) from another camper and ran away fearing for his dear life. Things like this is why I have never gone camping and don't want to. I only camp at hotel rooms and even then I have a steak knife next to me on the night stand. I vicariously camp in the woods watching others camping on UA-cam.
@@WhimsyWendy so it was 4ish in the morning the sun wasnt out it was still pitch dark. the though did cross my mind but i was afraid of falling or getting lost while trying to get out of there. honstely its a great time just go to a camp ground and not in the middle of nowhere like i did. that mainly if your going alone if your with people you will be fine. keep in mind i have been camping for about 15yrs now and thats the only time something like that has ever happen to me
Had a bear outside my tent while car camping in algonquin with my wife and three young kids. My wife and I yelled and it took off. It was a major adrenaline rush...the sound of its heavy breathing is still very vivid in my mind. It was all over the campground that night and people were setting off their panic alarms for hours. The heavy breathing was very intimidating, but I have since learned it is a sign the bear itself is feeling stressed.
This summer I poked my head out of my tent to see a black bear face to face about six feet away. Gnarly experience. I got back in my tent to get my phone and he was already leaving when I came out. Have a loud yell and ran towards it to chase it the rest of the way into the woods. Really wish I had my phone when I initially poked my head out. Would have been an amazing video.
It happened to me once , I was very scared and attentive at that time , couldn’t figure out if it’s a bear a dog or a cow. Next morning my doubt were clear when I saw a huge lump of cow sh1t right next to my tent.
Same thing happened to me when I was on a 8th grade class trip to Utah where were camped in the desert. I had a animal of sorts outside my friend and I’s tent. I managed to sleep through it but I’ve never encountered anything like that before.
I was camping & sleeping in a pup tent one trip. I had a raccoon wake me up by stepping on the tent and stepping right on my face! I thought what great aim that raccoon had! You're a brave man! It was only a state park where I was camping in Florida so not a lot of threat there. Thanks for sharing your video! Scary stuff!
Very cool video. Heard a story about a solo camper that could hear the sound of a little girl calling out for help in the dark - in the middle of nowhere. CREEPY. It came and went and returned and went and returned over and over. Was driving him nuts. He was searching for what he was certain was a little kid and found that it was two trees rubbing together in the wind. How freakin' freaky would that be? The things that can go bump in the night. A bear, a turkey, a coyote or few...a sasqumsquatch? Even those few simple preparations you had (hatchet, spray, horn), will help you remain somewhat calm. VERY interesting video, budd. Cheers!
Ah, the joys of tent camping. We get plenty of animal incidents here in the Sierra Nevada highcountry. When tent camping, especially out of a car where you have more carry capacity, I like tents that are a little larger than what I could get by with. It really helps to have a bit of breathing room between you and the thin nylon that seperates you from the world! Usually for me and my few camping companions, its rare that an animal hangs out in camp. Most time you hear em pass near camp. If it hangs out in camp for a while, sometimes the best thing to do is muster the courage and head out there. Shine the light, make some loud noises, beep the car alarm and maybe if necissary, fire off a round or two. Usually things will get the idea after all that commotion. Kodos to you man that sounded pretty heavy of an animal, wouldnt be surprised if it was a curious black bear. I woulda been in the car with the shotgun by then.
I know what you’re going through. Had an animal do that to me in central Alberta. Had our rifles in the tent during hunting season but good luck reacting in time. A wolf howled right outside the tent at 5:00AM. Sent a shiver through my spine. Nothing came out of it.
Seen February 2020 When camping, I would never go without my firearm. I do hold a CCW license within my home state of California. I camp with my small dog, who has outstanding hearing. Safety is priority one. Best regards 👍
Yeah I get the peace of mind that would provide, especially with a vulnerable pet. But very few campers in Ontario would bring one despite high numbers of bears. Saw 8 in one day here once. Just bear spray for me.
Mr. Hahn I also live in Ca. I know you can have a gun in tent (temp residence) but for us non CCW people how can we backpack between camps. Would you recommend packing it anyway. Would a ranger understand? Just curious how strict they can be. Drive in camping is a no brained can lock it up in trunk when traveling but I’m wanting to get more into backpacking.
I feel you man... this is why I bought an off-road teardrop camper. We had bears at our campground a few summers ago and I walked on one while taking a restroom break. Never again. Glad you made it out ok!
That's always fun to wake up to. When I used to camp regularly ish I had one of those cheap battery bluetooth cameras id place on top of a table/car whatever was nearby. It helped when I thought there was something. Glad ya made it alright.

Bear spray helps against other animals too. Next time just go out of the tent with the can and your light.
Also, keep an emergency pee bottle, and don't talk if you feel threatened by an animal just outside your tent, if it was a bear he'd know exactly where you are.

The other morning they were woken up by a very loud scratching on their tent and a massiv shadow!!
So my dad poked his head out the tent to take a look whats going on, since there are not many dangerous animals in central europe.

Hahah yeah I hear ya, the things we imagine can be a lot scarier than the scary things we can see.

They don’t want me coming out of my tent.
After the verbal warning I’ll be standing there in my boxers and a hoody pointing my freedom dispenser at him.

LOL!
Wolves has never gone away from Sweden. It has been as low as 300 wolves in the whole country but now they're numbers are growing again.
A goat!!! Hilarious. 😁
@Marcus Maximus Jesus man, have you actually ever had that happen to you?
Aaaahahaha!😂
Your hatchet would do the trick, but I like to keep a knife on me when I sleep. My thinking is that if an animal did charge the tent, the poles would be quick to collapse and finding the zipper for the door would be nearly impossible. Quickest way to get out in an emergency like that would be to cut the wall open, lest you become a nylon cased sausage.
Hahah good point Sean. I have a similar feeling in the hammock AKA bear burrito.

once I was camping solo when, in the dead of night I was woken up by the shrill shound of a woman crying outside my tent.

Awesome!
Bears are indeed really quiet, rounded a corner once and came face to face with one, we both scared each other and the mf slapped me in the face before taking off. I couldn't coordinate my legs to walk properly after that for a good 15 minutes
you should be more afraid of the moose, moose are very territorial and more dangerous than bears

Hahah great story Kevo!
Yep a thin sheet of canvas is all you need for protection from being eaten . hahaha

Hahah oh jeez...if only I could've found that damn key!
@@LostLakes Where did you find the key?

I quite know the feeling! Woke up in the middle of the night once in the tent, something walking arround the tent making noises för about 2 hours. Scary thing was I wasn´t sure if it was a human or animal for the first part. No predatory animals in that region.
Another time I awoke once again in the middle of the night (bear country this time, Canada), REALY had to pee. I finaly did it after having waited for an excruciating while. In the morning I found out from my mates that 2 bears had been spotted passing between our tents about the same time I went out :D
Oohh man. Scariest when you don't know what it is...the mind conjures up all kinds of things. And even worse when you have to pee 😅
Eh?
That's why you should have a jar with a lid in your tent so you don't have to go out side.
Always take a bottle to bed, women, a wide mouth mason jar or wide lid iced tea bottle. Careful not to drink it accidentally!
I do know about animals outside your tent at night. I do solo backpack with my golden retriever. I woke up one night to him standing and growling at the wall of the tent. Probably just a racoon outside but you never know. I had my bear spray and hatchet in hand. I like the way you maintained yourself. Koodos
Thanks Bernie! It's always unnerving, even when a mouse rustles some leaves, but rarely goes bad for anyone
Dog is good but 44 mag is better

I don't have any pets but my buddy was camping the last month with his dog and they came so the way up into camp surrounding his tent, he yelled and used a big stick to scare them off, thankfully it worked. He had to laugh because his dog slept through the whole thing, great watch dog huh lol. She's old though. Take care!

a couple years ago I went camping in traverse city Michigan. we camped in the campsites that don't have any power. the only power source was the bathrooms. these are also big sites with like 6 or 7 sand plots for people to put their tents. my friend and I stayed in the same tent and we took the farthest sand plot away from others and it was a little bit into the woods but you could still see us it wasn't like covered by trees or whatever. but it was raining and we were playing cards till like 2am. we started to hear something rub up against our tent and we heard footsteps. at first, we thought it was my cousin messing with us, but after listening to the light footsteps circling us we knew it wasn't him.

You could have saved time and just pissed your pants when you heard the bear.
Bear spray actually attracts bears, if it’s sprayed on an object or on the ground, etc. However, the verdict is still out if unused cans attract bears. Tom Smith, a phd who studies bears says unused bear spray is ok in tents but sprayed bear spray needs to go in a bear bag

Despite of our great discovery we both refused to prove if we are right :D At least we managed to fall asleep with mantra spinning in our minds:"it is just gentle wind, enjoy the nature! it is just a gen.."

Things like this is why I have never gone camping and don't want to. I only camp at hotel rooms and even then I have a steak knife next to me on the night stand. I vicariously camp in the woods watching others camping on UA-cam.
@@WhimsyWendy so it was 4ish in the morning the sun wasnt out it was still pitch dark. the though did cross my mind but i was afraid of falling or getting lost while trying to get out of there. honstely its a great time just go to a camp ground and not in the middle of nowhere like i did. that mainly if your going alone if your with people you will be fine. keep in mind i have been camping for about 15yrs now and thats the only time something like that has ever happen to me
Creepy!!
Oh man, Algonquin bears are the worst sadly. You should check out Chris Prouse's latest video if you haven't seen it yet...you'll really relate to it
This summer I poked my head out of my tent to see a black bear face to face about six feet away. Gnarly experience. I got back in my tent to get my phone and he was already leaving when I came out. Have a loud yell and ran towards it to chase it the rest of the way into the woods. Really wish I had my phone when I initially poked my head out. Would have been an amazing video.
Maintaining a 460 magnum while a animal is outside the tent. (My version of camping)
I managed to sleep through it but I’ve never encountered anything like that before.
we had a class camping trip in florida where they blind folded us and made us hold gross things like buggs and worms 🐛 🪱
My 12 gauge with buck shot and slugs are my 1st defensive plan. I live in Pennsylvania and there’s a lot of things in these forests
Mate that sound at the 1:05 made me do a little jump from my chair.
The bear outside is like hey I’m mr yogi bear... feed me seamore !
Never too cheap my friend. Camping is how things used to always be, much better experience sleeping outside with nature than sleeping in a motel.
I'm with ya Vinny...and this scenario is so rare too.

When camping, I would never go without my firearm.
I live in Canada and we camp in the Rockies in bear country without firearms and survive
@@KemDIY Ditto brother.
@@carmenpatterson7010 That's because you have no rights
Damn man, i camp here in the UK pretty infrequently and I'm scared of like, a gutsy fox breaking in. You guys are tough.
😆
In the states we got bears, lions, and coyotes/wolves
I feel you man... this is why I bought an off-road teardrop camper. We had bears at our campground a few summers ago and I walked on one while taking a restroom break. Never again. Glad you made it out ok!
That's always fun to wake up to. When I used to camp regularly ish I had one of those cheap battery bluetooth cameras id place on top of a table/car whatever was nearby. It helped when I thought there was something. Glad ya made it alright.
