What to expect if you encounter a wolf

- An ODFW intern encountered a wolf while out in the woods monitoring wolf activity. She breaks down wolf behavior and what to do if you encounter a wolf while hunting or recreating in the woods. For more information, please visit: dfw.state.or.us/Wolves/human_...
In the unlikely event that you encounter a wolf, here is what to do:
- Make sure the wolf knows you are there.
- Shout or speak loudly so the wolf hears you.
- If seated, stand up and wave arms so the wolf sees you.
Wolves tend to avoid humans when they are alone or in a pack. Once a wolf sees, hears or smells you, it will most likely leave the area quickly.
If the wolf (or some other predator) still approaches or acts aggressively:
- Do not run, stay calm and keep facing the wolf.
- Pick up small children without bending down, put dogs on a leash, and leave the area.
- Shout, make noise, make yourself look larger, and throw any available objects.
- In the unlikely event that you are attacked by a wolf, fight back.
- Use bear spray or mace, it is very effective at discouraging any large predator.
Wolves generally avoid human interactions, unless they have become too accustomed to people. This can happen when people feed wolves or wolves are getting consistent food from campgrounds or dumps. - Домашні улюбленці та дикі тварини

I mean, being killed by a human is way more common. BUT having close encounters with a human is also waay way more common than having a close encounter with a wolf. So I am not sure wild wolf's really are safer to humans than humans or if it's more the statistical likely hood of interacting with one of the two that makes it seem like wolfs are safer. Just as a reminder, wild wolfs are not domesticated dogs.

I encountered a wolf once when I was hiking. It was on its own and was the most beautiful majestic animal. I had come to a clearing and it was standing still on the other side. It did not seem shocked or frightened, to this day, many years later, I remember its eyes as it looked directly into mine. I just stood still and made no noise or movement and after it had looked at me for what seemed ages but was probably just a minute, it just slowly turned and walked away into the trees as if I was of no importance to it or its day. I still remember its beatiful head and stunning eyes. Afterwards, I did think it strange that it looked me directly into my eyes, as a dog does not do that. I felt that it was confident in its domain and had allowed me to enter it and pass thru. They are just wonderful animals.
what a magical experience! wolves are amazing animals.
Huh? Dogs do look people in the eyes
@@modkip25I think they meant wolf
Direct eye contact in canines is a call to challenge. Dogs avoid eye contact because they are far more conflict avoidant. That wolf was having a staring contest with you, and you won.
This is a fantastic story, and I love it.
My dog totally looks me in the eyes, though. Someone else in the comments mentioned that this is a challenge to canines, and that's possible. My dog is a chihuahua, and she is certainly the alpha.

People have a weird perception when it comes to wolves and think they are just attacking and killing people all the time. Attacks are so extremely rare, and that is if you even encounter one. They almost always try to avoid humans.
a stupid stereotype, really. wolves would never hurt a human unless provoked or something's wrong with it.
I will never trust a wolf. You can risk your life if you desire.
@@inukoinu.k9 The problem is that it's not obvious how you provoke an animal. That's why I would never go in a forest alone.
Also it's normal to think wolves are "killing people all the time". They could kill you easily. Life is not a Disney movie
@@inukoinu.k9Any predator would attack a human because of one simple reason, hunger.
If you are a midget, extremely young (elementary/middle school), frail, injured, old, or have a small pet with you, you will more likely be attacked. The average 16-60 year old won’t be attacked. Your kids will.
I’ve experienced two wolf sightings. One in Alaska, another in Colorado. Both times we just stared at another, and then the wolf walked away. Thankfully there was good distance between us.
I’ve also had this happen with a fox, moose, and bobcat. Bobcat was actually the closest encounter. It walked right between my dog and I. Stopped at that point, looked at me, then kept walking away. My dog was about 15 years old, so he didn’t react, just stayed still.
Sometimes the best thing to do is stay still and quiet. Give them their space. It’s more their curiosity, when they know you’re not a threat, they depart. Naturally not all cases, but my own experience.
Was this is northern CO? We haven't had wolves for a long time in CO, except for a few packs who wander in from Wyoming. Just reintroduced 10 of them last year to broader parts of thei historic range

🇨🇦 Big Bad Wolf eh, he ran away. I worked at Canadian Forces Station Alert in the Arctic ( military out post ) We have a large family of Arctic wolves, ( 25 ) they walk amoung us, we don't feed nor touch them. They are very social, curious, shy, loving to their pups, they are a family !! They follow us down to the pump shack, wait, and walk back to HQ with us. There is no fear, and no fear of us with the wolves. Extraordinarily lucky to have been in the North Pole and to live amoung these magnificent animals.
I have encountered single wolves and entire packs while hiking. They have never shown any signs of aggression. I have enjoyed the experience, snapped a picture or two and went on my way. Single wolves nearly always run off unless they have been habituated by people feeding them. Packs have typically wandered off.
Wolves are so cool. It’s super lame that movies and games always depict them as some killing machines who just rip and tear through everything they see. That’s rarely true for any animal.

I have had one encouter with a wolf when one of our sheep got loose. The sheep stayed at the edge of an open field and the wolf, knowing we were there, stayed in the woodline at maybe 15-20m from the sheep. Given that the wolf had ample time to jump out and get the sheep but didn't, I got between the two and hearded our loose sheep away and back to safety. On this day everyone came out ok. It's hard to understand how human beings have survived this long when you compare their ability to see, smell, hear, etc... with the apex predators of the world, such as wolves, tigers, etc... What I was told is that if you see one wolf in the wild there is usually a pack circling you. And most predators don't allow their prey to see them until it's too late.
We also had a wolf approach us at our remote cottage in western quebec. He came out of the forest around dusk and loped along the shoreline. My 11yo son was fishing on the dock at the time but everyone else was in the cottage. We stood up asking ourselves if it was a dog but knowing it couldn't be as there were no other people on the lake at the time. THe wolf then ran straight down to the beach about 20 feet from where my son was on the dock. He walked into the water chest deep. I have no idea what he was planning to do to this day. We got a little concerned at the moment he went towards my son so we came out of the cottage and the screen door slammed. THe wolf bolted back into the forest when he heard that sound. I have no idea if he was coming towards my son like as a predator, but don't think so as he seemed kind of tame or nonplussed by him. He ignored him more than anything. It was strange. Never saw any wolves again in the 10 years since!

imagine listening to a pack of them making that sound on a new moon night (zero light), ripping and tearing apart a deer you forgot to string up just outside the light range of your fire. (20-30 feet) now imagine your gun is 50 feet away from you in the opposite direction, inside the trailer you sleep in. (too dark to see the trailer at this distance, so you feel unsafe to go there) now imagine experiencing this as a 14 year old. lmao

Thank you for the informative video. There is too much "big bad wolf" syndrome these days. To see a video on how to respect them, rather than shoot at them is a relief.
If one is coming after me I'll use my gun. I always carry in the woods, why take chances? You can respect all you want, animals don't respect anything when they're hungry or feel threatened.

Horrible punchline
From a wolf perspective finding a Human in a forest it is the most traumatic experience.
its the same for a lot of animals. only species that have had little experiance's with humans would try somthing.
@@TheBronf You'd think right? It's quite the opposite though; creatures fear what they do not know until they realise it's not dangerous.
"I had heard tales whispered amongst the pack, tales of bipedal creatures standing tall with confidence in their stride. They cannot sense which land is ours, or perhaps they do not care. Sometimes they travel in packs with a fellow canine to guide them, and sometimes they travel alone. We do not know if they are ignorant of pack territory or if they are here for a more malicious purpose, so we are advised by the Alpha to flee on sight if they are spotted. I pray to the moons that I do not encounter one any time soon..."

i had similar encounter with a large stray German shepherd looking dog when I was like 4 or 5. I ran into it at a narrow path and I was petrified thinking I was gonna get shredded. I just froze there not because I was unable to move but thought that was the best thing to do, to remain calm and show confidence. That dog apparently felt threatened too, tail tucked looking straight at me. It felt like eternity until my dad came and the dog just walked away. decades later I still remember it like a video

'Running away is a wolf's typical response when encountering a human...' ...absolute proof of their intelligence.
I should do the same lol but i'm not so intelligent
this is the general response for most animals, especially ones in north america
@jantje blokhead I don't think hunting them for centuries is what led to this behavior. Lol
