Dude, it isn't even anywhere near as bad as Denmark even. We haven't had any decent picks since Emmelie Dee Forest's song Only Teardrops. Everyone since has just been a copy of an 80's formula. It's honestly sad to see that ESC is supposed to be the forefront of European music, but it's.. So boring. There's occasional good songs that actually stand out (a few examples from 2021 would be Måneskin - Zitti E Buoni, Blind Channel - Dark Side and Go_A - Shum), but it's become so monotonous. It's kinda sad.

Eskimo Callboy doesnt need Eurovision, but Eurovision needs Eskimo Callboy
Not only did they decline Eskimo Callboy, they ignored every style and genre except for generic pop-songs. What is the point of having nearly 1000 songs submitted, when all selected songs are completely exchangeable? I would have loved to see different styles of music at the national finals and let the people vote for their favorite. But now, all 6 entries just sound, even if they are not (all) bad songs. Even for the nominated artists it is shit, since they seem more and more exchangeable with the way it is.
I'm actually curios, what other good songs they completely ignored because they might upset somebody on the radio
It's eurovision... that's what it's all about. No matter what style of music the song is, it has to be pop. Even if it's a metal band, they will 100% play a pop song.

@@the_Rade of course you can label everything as pop and call it a day, and of course when artists from other genres submit a song, they try to use their more commercial/catchy ones. But Maneskin won last year with a rock entry, Lordi did in 2006. We got stuff like Viszlat Nyar by AWS o Something Better by Softengine in recent years. And then, outside of rock, there's always some funk, hip hop, folk/regional music... ESC is 90% pop, but its not so crazy to expect some rock stuff to have a chance in there

There's a petition to bring Electric Callboy to the Eurovision Song Contest. It says "Our goal is that in this year's preliminary decision is not only the choice between one and the same genre in different packages - we want the diversity much talked about by the jury and thus a real chance with the choice in the preliminary decision to make a difference for success at the ESC."
And it already has nearly 50.000 signatures.

The excuse from NRD that it‘s not "Radio suitable" is complete %@$'sht because last year Finland participated with a metal song basically consisting of swear words. The six people who are in the final casting for Germany ESC entrance are 'complete trash' according to some friends (who are, like me, from Germany).
Maybe there‘s this whole band name thing, but i don‘t know if that‘s one of the reasons why they can‘t go
Even if EC wouldn’t have won the contest they would most definitely won many hearts around the world, but the jury decided to send in some generic pop that won‘t win (99% sure).
…They don’t want the win: The contest takes place in the country who won the last contest (in this case Italy) and that country has to organise that contest. Germany apparently doesn‘t want it since the last few years, the jury took artists who weren‘t recommended by the music scouts that took the applications from artists who want to go there. It‘s like Germany doesn‘t even want to win, cause they don‘t want to organise it
That‘s so sad, because Germany is always guaranteed to be there and they always end up on the bottom of the ranking

Sorry, but that has nothing to do with 74 years old - my dad is 76 and he loves Rammstein and Eskimo Callboy. He says that this kind of music is more like the music back in his younger years than Helene Fischer and other Schlagershit. It´s the stock-im-arsch-mentality of the jury from NDR.

In Germany we have a radio station called "Bremen Vier" and they have a four hour block of everything rock and metal related (from AC/DC to BMTH and Hollywood Undead) every Sunday night. And though I don't know if they've played anything by EC yet, it's very much possible that they did.
Kinda sad that they didn't make it to the official competition. I would have loved to give my vote for them in the finals, they're one of my favorite bands.
Too high a chance of them actually winning. Which apparently is the primary thing the German committee wants to avoid.

The actual terrible thing about this situation is the fact that Germany consistently ends at the bottom on the ESC, with very few exceptions. Why not take a risk with something colorful, which has proven to appeal to a broad audience? It's definitely a missed opportunity for Germany to clean up their image among the ESC followers, and even more because Germany has a massive history (and present day) in the underground music.

in Norway we have like 6 prelims and 1 grand final and everything is decided by the public, way better system than a bunch of boomers just deciding 6 entries and basing it on being "radio friendly". Like come on, is Hatari (Iceland entry from 2019) radio friendly? get with the times Germany.

I'm actually quite sure that our German broadcasters pay a lot of money to make the ESC happen, more than small country like Croatia or maybe Hungary (no offend!) So they only see their economical advantage of "going with the flow" then really present something new to the audience around the continent.

It's so wierd cause years ago Lordi from Finland took it all by storm and went crazy and won the whole shit. I think they won cause people was tired of same old "boring" songs and Lordi was so different.
it's a popularity contest, and interesting personalities play a huge role there, that's why lordi won (somewhat catchy song, even thou i didn't like it too much, and weird costumes with masks were just interesting for the audience), and i don't know why they try to make it anything different
i'm sure that even an amazing banger, easily better than every other song there, would not be an easy winner in this contest, if everything around is just generic and boring, because almost everyone has different taste in music
so it's more about building sympathy, and eskimo callboys are great doing that (meanwhile their songs are also catchy, even if someone's not a fan, he can't deny that), so gl to germany with these generic picks, that will bore potential voters to death

The funny thing is, germany actually won once ( or placed very high) with stefan raab who literally just did comedy. It's so stupid germany has been trying to play safe for the last 3 or 4 years and it never worked while other countries send in musicians who are actually unique and arent just pop.

They won because its a fun good song - people still listen to it.
Most other songs were just forgotten.
But Finland had the same issue a few years before, when f-ing Nightwish tried to compete for them (granted, they were less known at that point). The fans voted them to first place, but the jury had nothing better to do than putting them second-to-last. As far as I've heard, Lordi almost wouldn't have been selected to compete for Finland in the first place, either. They won the Finnish national final by a very thin margin - luckily - and the rest is history.
They underestimate metal (and rock) fans imo. Nooo other music "fandom" goes crazy like that when they - unexpectedly - hear a heavier song on the radio/TV because it's THAT uncommon and we'll be satisfied with SMALL LITTLE BREADCRUMBS (plus points if they're actually talented, though, like EC). THAT is why Lordi and Maneskin have won (and Blind Channel got that far). OF COURSE THOSE ARE ALL AMAZING ARTISTS!! But we metal fans are fucking powerful. Eskimo Callboy would have gotten so far!

Crazy thing in Germany is... You have english pop or hiphop songs with just sex or pro violent behaviour, pro drugs, pro misogynistic behaviour, pro crimes, etc AND they play them on radio because they sound good...
But one little bit more aggressiv Rock Song or a german Rock or Pop Song with similar but less stuff than the english ones:
"Oh no! No, no, no!!! NO! No, no, no! We can't do that! No, no, no! NO! That's bad! No, no, no! Think about the old people! NO! No, no, no!!! Think about the children! No, no, no! NO! Rammstein? Deutschland? No, no, no! NO! That song sounds Pro N*zi! No, no, no! Snoop Dogg? Can you control your h*e? Sure... why not? Sounds fine.
The german main ESC-fanpage "ESC-KOMPAKT" wrote, that EC had 2 songs in the running (maybe in the last 24)
The songs for Turin were:
- "PUMP IT!" and "WE GOT THE MOVES" (which is for me the better song for the ESC). How dumb could someone be to ignore the fan favorite band?
To be fair, I think "We Got The Moves" was released too early in 2021 so it did not meet the requirements of ESC. As far as I know, the earliest possible release for the songs with whom the artists applied was September 1st 2021.

If you scroll through all entries on the ESC Facebook site, there is only sadness and anger on the german bands while all other nations support their bands and artists. This is bad for all other german bands/ artists in the pre selection because they did nothing wrong but have to handle this wave of disappointment. sad day. sad hundred days till this mess is over...
"Eskimo Callboy" was trending almost the whole day on german twitter cause they didn't got accepted and the comments underneath the ESC twitter posts were well rough :D
the german ESC jury seems to be really conservative and don't want to change anything, Cascade and Texas Lightning were cool tho but the other years really sucked.

If it’s because of radio friendliness, that means the people in charge are too old to be choosing artists. The only time people listen to radio is when they get XM radio for free when they buy a new car.
Radio has two target demographics rn:
Car drivers who don't put on their own music because they don't care enough and workers in craftsmenship and industry who have to listen to something that won't upset any colleagues.
To think that this translates to the ESC target demographic is just idiocy.
I haven't watched Eurovision in some years, but I remember the band Aws being there some year ago. I don't think it's the screaming that was the problem
Ironcly from my countrys swedish eurovision song contest from 10 years ago, a similar band competed called Dead by april moved on to the finals in the competition, but they did not win.
There’s been metalcore on Eurovision before. The band AWS from Hungry made it to the finals 2018 with the song Viszlat Nyár.
Eurovision is *bullshit* . I'm Spanish, and not long ago, there was a little festival organized to select whoever would represent us on Eurovision. The was this group of three women, called Tanxugueiras, who showed *immense* talent, interesting vocal techniques and had an amazing show. They also meant to represent their culture, all three native from Galicia, a region from Spain which is known for being a celtic land. This was an amazing contender for the contest, like a display of a fraction of the Iberian cultures.
So yeah, they didn't win. The song that will go to Eurovision is the typical pop-ish track: not bad, but not special in any way either. Just completely generic.
Tanxugueiras's song is called Terra, by the way. It's not for everyone, but I do recommend listenning to it at list once. It's fascinating.

@@maartenn2217 they choose a generic empty souless pop song. That's why there's a lot of people pissed here in Spain, like in Germany. Its not about favourites, its about sending something worthy at least. There's so many empty garbage on the radio already.
PD: the reason to choose what they choose was the rights of the song. RTVE (the TV channel who choose) bought the rights time ago. They tried to sell the song before and no one was interested in that. Its really suspicious, that the winner song is THAT song.

The last escs were the best ever. I also quit because of the lame songs. Always pop shit but especially the last one was so exotic and many different genres were presented. And now the viewers can vote as well. Viewer voted last year: 1. Rock 2. Techno with traditional music mix 3. Hard-Rock

I'm from Germany and I think that the 'Commitee' wich picked those musicians and songs simply didn't have the balls to pick Eskimo Callboy.
I imagine their meeting like this:
'Uh, it's a loud band with crazy people and lyrics you can't understand. Also, they use the F-Word. We can't pick them. We would definitly win with them, but we are cowards. Let's pick some stuff no one ever heard about and go for a new record with zero Points (or below).'.

We sent a solid metal band a few years ago from Hungary, because we gave no f*cks, yet that band (called AWS) did not receive Europe's love :( anyways, I was proud that we sent them that year. We should do it with a band called Subscribe, cause they are fun and original, but they just don't care about these things.
I hope we will see more bangers soon in the Eurovision, otherwise it's just a mainstream nonsense contest with only a few gems now and then.

I live in Germany, watch the ESC every year and I'm a metal head... The decision of the ARD is really sad but it was 100% clear how they would decide. The whole public radio and TV organization in Germany is run by conservative, old-fashioned people. Every kind of (heavy or provoking) music they don't know or that has some shouting in it isn't what they call "radio-friendly". And that's what every German household has to pay 220€ for per year...
thanks for your reaction vid. Let´s hope that EC are going to start a second hype - a petition hype. One thing i wanna say: it´s not only EC fans who protest; the majority of german ESC fans dislike that decision made by the NDR broadcasting station. The ESC fanbase reacts because of an obvious lack of diversity in the song choice, being dishonest about the NDR´s own motives and ignorant towards the ones who simply love the idea of ESC as something unique and open-minded.

Last year Germany placed at a whopping 25th out of 26 contenders in the finals, so they didn't want to pick an actually good song, because then they wouldn't be able to reach their goal of 0 points and last places

At least Germany had some interesting choices. When it came to Spain we had to decide between shit and more shit. There was only one song I liked from the ones my country picked as posible choices for Eurovision since it had a flamenco style which is our national music genre but no, they picked a generic reggaeton song where the singer sings about how hot she is and how much money she has.

When a country win the esc, it have to organize the next year contest. The organization is very very expensive (the estiamtion is around 30 millions €) and some countries don't want to win to not have to organize the next year show (in France we send singers who have the lowest chance to win). It's possible that Germany didn't send Eskimo Callboy for that reason

I should also add that 2007's winners from Finland, Lordi, were a heavy metal band. Yes, they sung about Christian beliefs but their 'style' of music was hardly Radio Friendly lol.

It's actually funny that their music is socalled 'not suitable for radio stations' but I hear it everyday on Studio Brussel (huge Belgian radio station)... AND I LOVE IT
