Update Info - Cuttlebug doesn't necessarily need the top cutting plate; self healing matt could be cut on a heavy duty paper cutter - guillotine; You may be able to find the right sized self healing matt on line - so no need to even cut.
Olfa 6x8 mats work well in the Cuttlebug. I bought 2 from Fatquartershop.com which sells a lot of fabrics and cutting instruments for sewing, etc: www.fatquartershop.com/cutting-mat-with-grid-6-inch-x-8-ib They will curl a little, though, because they're not super-thick.
@@watercolorseasons5321 oh my goodness, this has just popped up on my end. I use the self healing cutting mat on top in place of the hard plastic one I have been using the same 2 self healing cutting mats for 2 years as opposed to replacing the hard plastic ones every 4-6 months. thanks for watching & for your question, sorry for the long delay xo happy artin
Yep. You helped me a bunch. I just happened to have tin snips and they worked like a charm. I didn't even have to sand it cause it came out so smooth. Thanks for the tip. The Tin Snips did it. I was cutting a 6x8 inch so I only cut 8 inches across twice, and it was a chore, but so much easier than trying to source a saw or cramp my hands with scissors!
oh yeah!!! that's great & makes me happy to help save the hands if even just a little. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to share your outcome. xo happy artin
I've been reading about using those in place of a cutting plate but haven't as yet tried it. I have three huge 3x4 cutting mats I bought years ago. They were a set that were meant to be attached to one another for quilting, I think. Thank you for the video showing how to make them. I'd definitely try to get a friend with a band saw to cut them for me. I am going to watch your videos to see how this is working out for you since I don't need to replace my plates as yet. I have the Big Kick I bought brand new 8 years ago, with the original, well used plates, which are still usable. I also have a barely used set of replacement plates, and I bought a brand new Big Shot with extended plates off of someone from CraigsList who sold it with stamps and scrapbooks and other goodies for $100. Won't need replacement cutting plates for a long while but am interested in seeing how well the self healing cutting mat works and if there are any additional benefits to using them over the acrylic plates. Have a blessed day!
you certainly got a great deal Roberta, so far it's making me happy, but if you are set with plates I say use 'em up girl and IF a bandsaw is handy to use you bet I say use that, but it wasn't too bad to cut with the tin snips - scissors would have taken me days with a few pain pills included lol xo happy new artin week
well it all depends Diane how how often you use 'em and what kind / brands of dies, but at $6 a cutting plate I think this will solve my issues for many years to come. thanks so much for watching xo more happy weekend artin
yes and no, it depends on the die or embossing folder being used. All the machines have different cutting / layering plates because they are different thickness'es. Thanks for watching & asking xo happy artin
I used an acrylic ruler 5" width and a box cutter. Took several passes and even turned over and started on that side. Eventually cut through. Not a bad cut job.
well done Lorena, that took some muscle but I'm sure you got a straighter cut than I. You know it's only a matter of time before some company makes this for us , lol cha ching in their pockets lol. Thanks so much for watching and commenting xo happy mid week artin
thanks Doris, my platform thingy broke & the shims that are supposed to be attached to it are not, so I use the metal ones and because my sandwich is off, I have to do trial and error, one day I may get a replacement platform, lol maybe, thanks again xo happy artin weekend
I am definitely going to be doing this (as soon as I can find my old cutting mat). I've seen other videos with this and keep thinking what a great idea. I'm curious about why you use the metal shims, as well as where you find the metal and how that gets cut to the proper size. TFS. oxox
I see it as a money saver, the metal shims I have were cut by cousin Lee - he has the a metal business, I started using them as them the do not flex and I think it gives me a better cut with the thin dies AND the magnetic dies stick to 'em. As I understand they (sizzix) now makes a really firm platform and a magnetic cutting plate (I have not actually looked, but rather heard this rumor) so um yeah LoL. So far I'm liking the self healing matt, just have to find the right sandwich - le sigh xo happy artin new week style
that's so Cool Ellen, we are about 40-50 miles form a Buc-ees, lol that Pic is just so lol. thanks for stopping & watching & commentin xo happy weekend artin
it looks like a lot, but really it' the same as the regular platform thingy. because of wrist issues mine got dropped a lot and broke, so I improvise. Thanks very much for watching and commenting xo happy artin
Why the heck didn't Sizzix think of this. Maybe they would make more money with the acrylic ones cause you have to replace them. I don't know. You are a smart cookie. Thanks for sharing!!!
Why don't you flip this, put the shims all down but then put the cutting mat on them, then the paper and the dies on top of the paper (cutting side down) so you can see everything. Then finish the sandwich with a clear plate to see if everything is in place ...!?
