Barbie the character being a blank slate to be projected on is honestly the quintessential barbie trait. Everything about that doll is designed for children to project their self upon and have act out whatever fantasies of adult life they want. So it makes perfect sense for that to carry over in the movie.
In terms of barbie as a protagonist, from a performer perspective it's almost thankless, it's definitely the least fun and most straight of any of the roles. However Margot brings just so much earnest humanity to it! Like when she first arrives in the Real World and looks around at the trees, kids playing, couples fighting, etc etc - she has this amazing sort of wonder and openness. On my second viewing today I did wonder if a comedic actor could've had more fun with it? But I wouldn't want to disrupt the delicate balance between goof and heart. I get what yall mean about barbie not being an active protagonist (the refusal of the call to action, barbie giving up before the finale, America Ferrera's character being the one with the inspiring speech, etc). The most common feedback I heard from friends was that the ending - where she becomes human - felt entirely out of left field. I thought it made perfect sense! But clearly something got muddled there. I'm w rae though, where I found it so powerful. Also great point about will Ferrells character - he was so confusing! (although surprisingly endearing & not annoying at all!). Him and the boardroom members had me in stitches at sooo many points.
58:12 Except the trope of the character choosing to go on the journey is supposed to be proceeded by thistrope of "refusal of the call." Even in the examples given of Luke Skywalker and Bilbo Baggins, both of those characters first refuse the call to adventure, before eventually deciding to accept it.
While I do see the themes of anti-patriarchy I also saw how Barbieland being a extreme matriarchical society is also not a good thing. Ken’s feelings of only existing for Barbie (which he was convinced is his whole purpose) and feeling taken for granted made me feel like the movie was saying neither extreme patriarchy/matriarchy are good things for society. After all we are all humans and people and it takes all of us to work together in this complicated planet of ours. Just my thoughts.
Oh my God that's WILD, I literally JUST left the cinema seeing this. (edit: for the second time). Here I am looking for something to listen to while I find my way outta the mall 😂 so excited. I absolutely adored this movie so I'm excited to hear the tale behind it
Interesting they’re going to allow Barney to be satirized. Decades ago, I took part in and audition to provide a backup voice for Bob West who was the original voice of Barney the dinosaur. My first comment to the person who contacted me about the audition was “ I gather Bob West is up for contract renegotiation and hasn’t signed his contract” I knew this was probably BS but I went along with it as a lark. I did a phone audition and I believe they did this with about 100 people. I was strongly cautioned not to make fun of the character or I would be dropped. Out of that group , I was one of the 16 they brought to the sound studio, which is rather bizarre seeing all these guys around the waiting room running lines in the voice of Barney. Throughout the day they started making cuts and inexplicably. I found myself one of the last two guys. I didn’t get chosen. The sound Director told me “you are dead on perfect and sound exactly like Barney, but when you laugh, you make him sound too intelligent“. That’s a direct quote Rest of the story. The guy that was chosen, flew to New York and spent a a week in a hotel room and never utter a word. Bob West signed his contract. I sent this other fellow back home. I think West made some kind of comment that the other guy they brought in just couldn’t do it or some crap like that. I don’t know if it’s true or not, but I understand they tried to stick the cost of the hotel room on this guy sent home
re: laughing. Consider the fact that tv shows have a warm up act to make sure the at home audience laughs... your laughter, and the fun you are having, makes it more enjoyable for us. Again, thanks. Have a wonderful day
I enjoyed the movie overall, but I felt like it fell a little short on the gender equality front since it just switched power roles from the usual ones without really pointing out why that non-equal state is actually bad(which I think it is). I can also understand the "against men" viewpoint because since it flipped roles, the movie made quite a few dumb and honestly a bit sexist jokes at men's expense, where they have in the past been made about women. What I would have wanted more was some deeper stuff about social roles in general, the honestly psychological horror state of the Barbie World, and an idea about fixing the gender inequality even if it was a simplified children's movie version,

Barbie is a perfect movie which I can only rate an 8/10. It loses a mark for some Seriously aging jokes, that even in 12 months won't land properly. All of the best comedies are timeless and don't rely on recent properties for their jokes (see: galaxy quest and ghost busters). I do not know what they were thinking for the line "I was super into the Zach Sneider cut of Justice League"! And it loses a mark for Mattel pretending to be friendly and loveable and portrayed by Will Farrell and in it for the betterment of all woman kind but in reality they are frothing at the mouth to sell more kenough tshirts and Mojo Dojo Casa House toy sets. They were fully willing to be performative and be their own villain and be 'genuine' so that it can bolster their own PR and no movie gets to walk away with a 10/10 for that.
A female friend of mine said it best with this movie feeling like rich white girl feminism. If they would've had Barbie walk into 1950s America, they could've done real feminism and cover things that women were really dealing with at that time like the lack of careers for women at that time. Greta being rich her whole life really doesn't sh@t about the real world, her movies come across like you're leaving a lecture of a real lefty college with safe spaces, and she fits every negative stereotype for a liberal millennial.

I just think if I knew what the movie was going into the theater, I wouldn't have been so blindsided on the fact that it wasn't a kids movie.
Haven't seen either yet but prior to release I was more excited to see Oppenheimer. After all the controversy and Barbenheimer jokes I'm more interested in Barbie. 47:48 For context, the Nine-dash line is a man-made line implemented by China (claiming historic rights) covering a big portion of South China Sea which encroaches on the territorial borders of South East Asian countries including Vietnam. Imagine your neighbors claiming your front yard because their ancestors walked there before and have now built a fence right in front of your door. It's a bit of a heated subject among the countries involved. This is the same reason why the DreamWorks animated movie Abominable (2019) was banned in Malaysia, Vietnam & the Philippines.
This. It's not blind outrage. This is Hollywood giving the Chinese Communist Party a sweet little wink with an Easter Egg they would drool over. Hollywood doesn't much care if Vietnam is upset. The billions of dollars in money they get from the Chinese audience will more than make up for it.

In my social circles, I'm known as the dude that always goes to the movies. I had to explain/justify why I didn't see 'Barbenheimer' (the Barbie part especially). Suffice it to say, Chris Nolan's movies aren't fun and the audio is not mixed well. Regarding 'Barbie' Aside from 'The Lego Movie', which other movie based on a toy was even decent. The fact that 'Barbie' is making a lot of money means nothing to me ('Avatar' and 'Transformers') 🤦🏾♂️
I think it's pretty irresponsible and shetty to label anyone who disagrees with the themes presented in Barbie as "alt right". You are basically labeling anyone with a differing opinion as a Nazi, skinhead, KKK, racist.
1:13:43 clint, even professional athletes dont make 100% of their shots, lower your bar for yourself. you are kenough. as a team, you all knock it out of the park every time, and theres a balance to that! no need to sweat it so much
Third & final comment, at first I was a teeny bit loathe to see this film bc I have a love/hate relationship w Margot Robbie. I work in the industry between Aus and the US, and SOMEHOW i KEEP dating her exes! Seriously. She has always been right around the corner w her projects and everyone has worked w her except me 👀 anyhooo as soon as Greta gerwig was attached I was simping so hard for this movie pre-release, I was pushing it to literally every person I met, like 'You're going to go see barbie, right?', as though it was this no-budget indie 😂. So you're welcome Margot!
@@ItWasAShtShow these days I predominantly work in directing and screenwriting. I have a series in post-production/ distribution hell right now that was an ABSOLUTE sh*t show (and the sh*t show was about 40% my fault lol). Anyway love this podcast and can relate haha

It’s fascinating how it walks the line between both ideas/rules.
Ken inexplicably thinking the patriarchy somehow involved horses is the funniest joke in the movie

Ok, time to knock off work early and listen to one of my favourite podcasts!
I feel like amy schumer version of Barbie would have been plot of I feel pretty but even worst
I don't appreciate you making fun of my seagull knowledge. Seagulls are serious business.
(This is a joke, I don't know anything about seagulls, and don't know anyone who does)
I don't appreciate you making fun of my seagull knowledge, seagulls are serious business 🤔😤
(This is NOT a joke, I know everything about seagulls, and so does everyone that I know)
We appreciate it if you didn’t send your seagull army to repeat your posts.
@@ItWasAShtShow the OP Stephen Staver is NOT part of MY seagull army, he even admitted in the reply to his original comment that he was making a mockery of what WE th TRUE seagull army believe and fight for, thats why I called out his shenanigans
Ahh, a new upload at 3A in the morning. I guess I don't need any sleep tonight.
So excited for this one! You guys have gotten me through so many night shifts, I re-listen all the time. Thank you so much for all of your hard work!
Glad we can help whilst working!
Oh God, Clint as the Alan of IWASS is too perfect (this is a compliment btw)
In my social circles, I'm known as the dude that always goes to the movies. I had to explain/justify why I didn't see 'Barbenheimer' (the Barbie part especially).
Suffice it to say, Chris Nolan's movies aren't fun and the audio is not mixed well.
Regarding 'Barbie' Aside from 'The Lego Movie', which other movie based on a toy was even decent. The fact that 'Barbie' is making a lot of money means nothing to me ('Avatar' and 'Transformers') 🤦🏾♂️
Was not prepared for that intro 😂
I think it's pretty irresponsible and shetty to label anyone who disagrees with the themes presented in Barbie as "alt right". You are basically labeling anyone with a differing opinion as a Nazi, skinhead, KKK, racist.
Not what we said at all.
1:13:43 clint, even professional athletes dont make 100% of their shots, lower your bar for yourself. you are kenough.
as a team, you all knock it out of the park every time, and theres a balance to that!
no need to sweat it so much
Can't believe Clint was bullied in High School. He probably deserved it though.
#ReleaseEmpiresOfTheDeep
Let's hope Barbie II gets stuck in a similar decades-long development hell
Clint 🫅 and Rae 👸 roasting🔥 Ian 🤖 is bloody 🫀 hilarious 😂 (not sarcasm)
What? There is even more laughing? Give us.
What do you do in said industry?
@@ItWasAShtShow these days I predominantly work in directing and screenwriting. I have a series in post-production/ distribution hell right now that was an ABSOLUTE sh*t show (and the sh*t show was about 40% my fault lol). Anyway love this podcast and can relate haha
thanks for telling me how to feel about the movie, i have no negative opinions and thought it was great because otherwise i would be dumb.
Hot take bro. You're sooo sarcastic.
I love your podcast so much! It's so funny and brings a smile to my face.
Thank you! So glad you enjoy it!
