I've enjoyed everything from the Germania Mint so far. It's just an outstanding product all around. Strike, Art, limited mintage and outstanding packaging. Premium is a bit high, but you get what you pay for. The new lion series from the South African's is quite well done. By volume, I have a bit of an obsession with private 2 oz bullion coin and have crates full of it. I just enjoy their heft. Substantial without going overboard.

Perth Mint, Canadian Mint then U.S mint. In that order
I only recently moved Canadian mint up in my top 3. Since milk spotting has been fixed. And they are relatively liquid and easy to sell.

It still amazes me there is no program at all with the Royal Canadian Mint to allow for an exchange due to the milk spot issues of the past. I am not saying they should pay a premium but I would think some people would be willing to exchange old milk spotted coins with newer versions where it appears they have figured out how to deal with the problem.

My first silver purchase was from the Perth Mint. I have to admit they make a very beautiful Bullion Silver Coins. I recently purchased the 2 Ounce “75th Anniversary Iwo Jima Coins”. But they marketed as an “American Battle Theme Coin” made by the “Perth Mint” as a American Australia partnership. Anyway I think for a first timer, I made a good choice. Thank You for showing us your collection. I made other purchases from other mints around the world. But it is to hard to the find a Mexican Mint Bullion Silver Coins and the Scottsdale Bullion Mint Silver Coins.

As an American the “America the Beautiful” coins are just awesome. They are a tad expensive but if you purchase at release hey come out to about the same price as an ASE on a per oz basis. They are extremely limited in number (most of series is below 100k) which in a few decades should make them all highly collectible. Thinking long term hopefully these will help my grandchildren that aren’t even born yet!!

Mr BYB makes a very good point about opinions being subjective. I had a monster box of 2oz turtles, that's 400oz. I
Iiked the smooth rounded finish of the reeded edges, but the design just didn't do it for me. I switched the proceeds into silver britannias and platinum QBs. I'm looking forward to getting my 1oz Platinum QB Falcon of the Plantagenets and my 1oz gold White Lion of Mortimer tomorrow.

Oh I almost forgot. The South African Mint. This is a great mint. I love their Gold Krugerrands which was the first gold bullion coin minted in 1967. Only problem with the Krugerrand is its a 22 carat gold coin. I like my gold coins to be 24 carat. Another famous product is the Natura Series which features gold coins showcasing different wildlife ( lions, giraffe, hyenas, hippos etc). This mint caters more to gold collectors than silver collectors. If I had a lot of money, I'd buy the entire Natura Series.

RCM would be higher on my list, but they have Major Spotting Issues, so I will only buy maple leaf as general bullion.

but they too have some spotting issues. Only premium that I buy is Perth.

Out of 25 britannias 10 had some damage, scratches milk spots and some kind of baked in dots of another metal. Horrible mint. The Mexican Mint (Casa Monedas) literally Money House in Spanish is a great mint. Here is my issue. Their most famous product, the Mexican Silver Libertad is the only bullion coin without a face value, so I am hesitant to consider it a coin. It's more like a silver round. My second issue is I liked the original Mexican Libertads that had edge lettering. Sometime in the 1990s the Mint decided to get rid of edge lettering and make a second version of the Mexican Libertad. I thought they should have kept the original Libertad which was smaller, clunker and had edge lettering.

I like silver that is legal tender in North America, but without high premiums, so the Canadian Maple Leafs work best in that regard. I love the design of the Maple Leaf because it's elegant and not flashy. I'd not been aware of the milk spot issues, but the biggest consideration for me is familiarity, or being recognizable. That's because precious metals are first and foremost a store of wealth, so I want bullion and coins to be as ubiquitous and official looking as possible. That being said, I'm not a huge silver eagle fan, even though I'm an American. I get the impression that people who've been stacking for a long time get into the more artsy offerings to keep their interest up. I admire some of the artistic coins that are of high quality, but some are so flamboyant or silly that they look like amusement park tokens or souvenirs. Owning a few of those is fine just for fun, but I certainly don't want obscurities being a major part of my stack.

So i know im biased as a Canadian, but i think as a bullion coin the maples have a beautiful simple design and, the new Mintshield they have implemented seems to be working as none of my maples from 2018 forward have developed milk spotting to any degree, however their collector coins have become in my opinion their downfall, it seems every week they have a new .9999 coin on varying weights and they always try to make limited runs so for a 15 gram 9999 coin they charge nearly $1000 but only because they are making 5k but i think their bullion is solid but not work much of a premium.

None of their products have sharp detail and seem to have only two finishes. They also over use the dot background finish because older designs with proof like finish looked terrible and were plagued with quality issues.

The other mint of note is the Bavarian State Mint in Germany which produces the Somali Elephant Series and the Rwandan Wildlife Series coins. I am little hesitant to regard these as legitimate coins. First they are not accepted in their respective countries as legal tender and they are not sanctioned by the government's of Somalia and Rwanda. So how can they be called coins, they are to rounds only valuable as collector pieces and for their melt value.

The Royal Canadian Mint from my home country- Canada. What can I say about them? They are mediocre - in the middle, neither the best or the worst. The best product is the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf. There used to be issues with milk spots. I don't know if the Mint has totally eliminated this problem. The Mint used to have really great products but lately I have not been really impressed with any of their coins. The new coins are lackluster.

Perth mint for quality. Royal mint for designs I think (when they're on the ball)

I buy RCM and Republik Osterreich. I find the US eagles and Perth mint are overpriced in Canada. I am ultimately buying for the melt value more than anything else, so some milk spots here and there aren't a big deal to me. But if there are Royal mint or US coins that run good deals, I might pick some up.

Perth mint is the best for sure, I'm very happy with the new 2020 Kook and Kangaroos. 2019 Maple is also nice and so far I haven't found any problem with milk spot yet. The edges of the new 2020 Britannia is kinda rough I had a hard time putting them back to the tube.

The best mint is obviously Perth Mint as their really strict on QC on all items & knowing what products are a hot sell. Perth Mint being so close to the Asia Market always seems to know what temps the Asian market such as the Lunars, Dragons & Pixiu Lions. The Royal mint is fantastic with their Gold products but with the Silver Milk spotting is a let down considering their Silver Market is bigger than Gold. An Australian Bullion Dealer had to lose out & set aside 20% of his Britannia Silver Coin as he didn’t want to pass it on to his customers knowing how bad the milk spotting was.

The royal mint designs are my favourite, but I've yet to get a single Britannia that wasn't dinged, or scuffed either in production or in the tubes, not to mention 100% of my Brits have milk spotting.
My Perth mint coins are flawless, not a single mark. I can't commend them enough, and considering RM coins are CGT free, I'd love to buy more, but all of mine look pretty bad and lose their premium

Just out of interest, why would you cut up and melt your milky maples? Surely, being coins they still have some premium over metal ingots?

Royal mint has nice designs but some questionable quality with milk spots and finish..
Perth mint has some nice designs and good finish.
US mint has had some good design in past but recent ones have dropped the ball..
CANADIAN MINT has great designs but low quality finish due to milk spots..
Mexican mint has the same designs but high premiums but good quality..
Perth mint is my favorite ATM..
    Favorite over all

Can milk spots be cleaned off the coins?

    • @BackyardBullion
      @BackyardBullion  4 роки тому

Yes, depending on how much potential damage (i.e. micro scratches) you want to have on your coin. You can use a soft eraser (rubber) to work them out.

In my (biased) opinion the 2021 Britannia is the nicest coin. Next I would say the Canadian Maple. I’m not a fan of the Aussie coins though.

The Austrian Mint is a great mint and Europe's oldest mint. Their best products are the Maria Theresa dollar and the Austrian Philharmonic. My issue with the Maria Theresa dollar is its too thin. I like thicker chunky coins. The Austrian Silver Philharmonic is the only bullion coin with a smooth edge. Personally I like coins with reeded edges and with edge lettering. So for these reasons the Austrian mint is not my favourite mint.
