    I remember my boss having one of these all because he was a left-handed mouse user, and the mouse (and USB ports on both sides) was perfectly geared towards lefties, while most other PC hardware at the time didn't account for left-handed users.

    • @twistedviewlabs
      @twistedviewlabs 2 роки тому +9

      strangly enough, I'm left handed but for some reason, the mouse always felt more comfortable on the right. maybe it's my muscle memory talking. just like I play guitar (badly...hehe) and drums right-handed vs. left-handed....again, probably has to do with muscle memory. I've tried left-handed configurations of things and, I don't know...it just feels "alien" to me.

      THe Magic Mouse WAS NOT designed to be used like a typical, SANELY designed mouse. You just change a setting, and half the time it doesn't work.
      And the Charging port in the most inconvenient place possible. Honestly whoever designed THAT part should be fired.

But, I agree, it is too expensive to replace on a whim. Hopefully Apple will come out with a TouchBar standalone keyboard before mine bites the dust :P .

    These videos took me back! My first experience was playing Oregon Trail on an APPLE II in elementary school (I never made it all the way. Sally ALWAYS got dysentery!), and then playing Lemmings on a Macintosh Performa 550 in Middle/High School. I LOVED their startup chime and was fascinated with the power button on the keyboard. The ones at our school used CD caddies instead of a slide out tray. It seemed so futuristic. LOL! Personally, I always used Windows computers, but coveted Apple’s hardware and software, especially when the iMac G3’s came out. Pre OS X systems were so fun to me compared to Windows (For Workgroups!) 3.11. I got some of the “Apple-ish” satisfaction once Windows 95 came out. Fast forward a few years and the first time I saw my friend with a 12 inch PowerBook G4, I decided the time had come to make the switch. I went to CompUSA and bought an iMac G5 and have been an  fanboy ever since! I have a closet that serves as an Apple graveyard for all my retired  products, save for the few machines I’ve given to friends/family.

    Thanks for posting these. Maybe I missed it, but apparently the Apple Extended Keyboard II was the last mechanical keyboard apple put out. It's in storage now, but I don't recall if mine is a II or just regular standard extended keyboard. I have another keyboard made by Alps, with a glide pad thing on it and 3 buttons. When I got my B/W G3 300mhz I was happy that it had an ADB port and that keyboard worked. I loved the keys on it and was great for doing long-form writing. Like letters or creative writing. However, one of the best is the Model M by IBM/Lexmark. With the USB to PS/2 adaptor, I use it every day for high-speed stuff for my job. I can bang away all day and not suffer pain in the joints of my hand and fingers. I'm considering getting a Unicomp Revamped Model M. The issue with the Alps, is even with one of the ADB to usb adaptor cubes I bought online (I wish I had a Griffin iMate) is that apparently there are no drivers for Mac OSX or anything PC, so I can't use it. I can use the Apple Extended keyboard though.

    Great job on the vid! Tip: All mac keyboards although compatible to all macs are not created equal. Some functions may be missing from one to the other. I spent hours trying to figure out the reason why Command F2 did not enable dual screen activation. I wasn't using my newer bluetooth mac keyboard, but an older usb one. As soon as I connected the bluetooth keyboard it worked! However, I wonder if their are alternate keys you can use for the same thing. I searched for some and couldn't find any. Also, the option to do the set up doesn't show up in sys.prefs if you use the older one. Just trying to save someone else the time and money if they pick up a cheap keyboard to try this.

  • @twistedviewlabs

    I'd say to do a continuation of this since they keyboard and mouse has evolved slightly. the last aluminum keyboard you featured (the tiny one) is called the magic keyboard since it's bluetooth and automatically pairs when switched on. it also charges and can be used as a wired keyboard while it's charging. annoyingly though (to me), it's too small and light & very hard to type on...just like a laptop keyboard (which I've never been a fan of). the current magic mouse has no visible buttons or scroll whell. in place of the scroll wheel, you swipe up and down...you can also swipe side to side to move between applications which is pretty cool. it's also bluetooth and rechargeable BUT with where you plug in the lightning cable, it's impossible to use while charging. the cool thing about both the magic keyboard and magic mouse is that you can use any standard lightning cable connected to a USB power brick to charge them instead of using ports on your iMac or Mac Mini.
    Also, if you're able to, you should do an evolution of Apple computers from the start up to 2021. I've personally owned an Apple IIc (with the included green screen monitor) and have used mac clones and Power Macs throughout the years. My current job supplied me with a 2019 iMac which has come a LONG way from when those were introduced in 1998. Interesting sidenote, I actually worked at the tech convention in 1998 where Apple unveiled the iMac at Moscone Center in San Francisco. I was impressed but, at the time, didn't like the all-in-one bit since I could imagine they were a nightmare to repair/upgrade. However, using the current iMac, I've definitely changed my opinion since they're definitely very easy to upgrade things like the internal SSD and RAM. As far as Apple laptops, Apple has always been ahead of the curve with making something high performance yet VERY portable. I mean, how cool is it that you can have a powerful machine to do audio/video production that doesn't take up much real estate on your desk? Anyhow, I've loved watching your videos over the years and like seeing older machines that I used growing up as well. My first computer was the TI99/4A with the voice modulator and cassette storage as add-ons in 1983...I was all of 8 and I'm sure it cost a small fortune back then. Lastly, getting back to the Apple keyboard saga...wasn't there an Apple keyboard that had the usual Apple key (outline of the Apple logo) and a solid Apple key? I could swear I've seen that before.

    I know this is an old video but one thing I've allways been curious about is, since some of theese Apple keyboards use USB, would they work on a Windows PC? I've tried it the other way round, using a regular PC USB keyboard on a Mac and that worked, so I assume the opposite would also work but I could be wrong.

    2023 and I still use my 2007 aluminium keyboard (that came with my2007 iMac) with my M1 MacBook Pro. Works great still (though I did break another of these keyboards at my workplace, by spilling tea on it 😕). Agree about the old original iMac USB ones. Absolutely beautiful things. The white clear ones that came along later were terrible, not just for yellowing, but for accumulating dirt inside. They looked like a health hazard after year or two of use 😅

    Actually, I disagree on your last point on the Aluminium keyboard. I would go as far to say that it is far more versatile in my opinion compared to prior versions. A lot of stuff has got under the keys on and drinks have been spilled on mine, yet it functions just as it did when I got it several years ago. I even clean it just through washing it in the sink, directly under water-- no problems. On the other hand, I've broken two of the older plastic style keyboards through water damage. Maybe you were just unlucky with yours, or I was lucky!

Notice: there are two types of mechanisms in the aluminum keyboards (type H and type F), make sure you get the right one for yours by examining the shape.
