As an aircraft mechanic and NDT inspector I can say that you really do things up to aerospace standards even on normal car engines. Especially the grinding off stress concentrators. Love to see a mechanic with proper working habits !

    • @TUMBLINJEST
      @TUMBLINJEST 3 місяці тому +11

Indeed he does, when I worked I was parts producing for Rolls Royce AERO and AIRBUS so yes everything to reduce stress failures back then also. When measuring Magnesium gearbox halves for engine speed reduction, I had to measure bore sizes with Air gauges knowing tight steel will seize in magnesium. I along with 300 others all lost our jobs to Insolvency by the company some 21 years ago now. Thankfully lol. It made me realise 12 long night shifts on then 2 off was slowly killing me, so, i retired. I had done more than my share of work, so thats it.

Yes this is good work habits but with this guy it's OCD! I got it buddy that can wire and make it look factory! That boy is OCD as hell! And that's what I like with someone that is wiring my vehicle. It's exactly the same thing with mechanical work.
I say OCD and it's not being hurtful when I say that. But it is definitely plain and evident with this young man!
Pssssssst................ He scrubs and cleans the parts that he knows that he's NOT going to reuse! And to the same standard as the parts that he is going to reuse!🤣🤣
And that's a good thing! Just that right there tells me, but if I didn't want to do it myself, I could definitely count on this guy doing it to my standards! You don't see that a whole lot today!

Same, though former. I'm loving this guy's attention to detail and cleaning. Watching shadetree mechanics who make videos go "Ehhh, good enough" and then close up a greasy, grody surface that will never get opened again for the rest of the engine's lifetime just KILLS me.

Back in my youth, (69-72) I rode & worked on motorcycles. My day job was at a hospital that had a huge steam cleaning station outdoors.
We took every advantage using that area to steam clean our engines and parts, whenever we could. Of course the understanding with the plant services manager was, we'd leave the area as clean, or cleaner, than we found it. As home garage mechanics, we enjoyed working on clean engines etc.
Now, in my 70's, I enjoy watching your videos and appreciate why you clean up so thoroughly.

Just came from Matt's channel with spud truck engine rebuild (I'm a long time subscriber at Matt's, and now a subscriber of yours.) Your attention to detail is AMAZING and can't be beat! You make me think you were a Jet, Helicopter or Space Shuttle mechanic in the service of the U.S.A. I was thinking you and Matt are kinda like Yin and Yang. Your use of o.d. micrometers , digital calipers, etc. are first rate. Matt's builds, (which are amazing!), are done with the ever popular "EYE-crometers", "smidges" and "grinder pads"! The good news is it will make more power than the 8.1, be about 120 lbs lighter and may even use less fuel. We won't know till we see numbers but at the least it will be more powerful while being as reliable with less weight and maybe even better fuel economy.

Funny how simple fixes can turn into what the hell have I gotten myself into. I'm used to working on stuff that has to go back to work, but I've been into more than a few motors that I would have loved to strip and reseal. Sometimes there's no budget or time for that kind of work. They aren't rusty. Had a 12v Cummins one time that leaked out of every freaking place it possibly could. No blowby, but it needed at least a quart a week, if not two. Some of those 12v's puke oil probably due to bad gaskets or something, and then there's mine with 285k on the clock with one oil leak at the lift pump.

Nor is it help to keep work areas clean not to mention the amount of space buckets or cans take up to collect enough scrap metal pieces to even try to get a few bucks back it won't happen. Scrap metal (iron) prices are to low normally for years now. Totally agree,
Deburing is a great thing to do. Round corners are proven to be better against cracking (airplane windows).
    Results are better..

Hey LT, I am putting a similar motor together for the COPO truck you sold me.
I started with an Aluminum 6.0 block that cleaned up at 0.005” over.
I got a 4.000” Callies crank and Callies H Beam rods for power adder motors along with Diamond pistons to end up at 10.2 compression.
I am using stock LS3 heads for now along with the stock LSA blower that you put on it.
But pretty quickly I’ll be swapping the stock LSA unit with a 2650 Rotor LSA case unit from Boost District. I’ve already been talking with them about getting that setup coming.
Of course I’ll be upgrading the fuel system with some Atomic Fab stuff and the ’04 and later fuel tank to work with it.
And I will have to order a different converter as well.
Oh, and I also have some helical-gear limited slips coming for the front differentials on these.
It should be even more fun than it already was if that’s possible.
    Later man.

9:49 ... I agree here :) ... It would be nice to save these and re-use them for some other project, like bolting a steel picnic table together! ...
BUT? It's not worth the risk some would re-use them for head bolts again! .. Better to keep them in the scrap bin, and let a foundry somewhere recycle them into billet steel :)

Now that’s gonna be a beast!!! The 6L LQ4 is bulletproof and dollar wise it already has the lower compression w/ the slight dish in the pistons compared to the LQ9, so it’s perfect for the positive displacement supercharger. Maybe hone and rering with a slightly wider ring gap

A while ago listened to a podcast where Dr. Hanula Barna ( the lead engineer behind the Bugatti Veyron engines) talked about his experience with engine tuning, and he emphatized that he allways made sure the small, minute details are well done. The deburring is a nice tuch and it reminded of his tuning philospohy.

Just for the average guy what would it cost to have somebody with your knowledge and attention to detail build an engine like you are doing. I am guessing but you would not do it no matter the money. It would have to be somebody like Matt. Best most educational and entertaining engine build I have watched! Thank you!

I've considered doing something like this for a while. You're looking at $10k - $15k in parts. Labor would be at least $15k. Budget for $30k - $40k.

A galley is a kitchen on a boat. Mike Galley is an engine builder and former host of Engine Power. A gallery is a passageway and is the proper term for an oil passage in an internal combustion engine. Thanks for coming to my TED talk. 😂👍🏼✌🏼

I really like your explanation of the whole process. I also like the fact you use new parts. Tired of seeing guys using old worn out parts and having things fail, and wonder why…. Look forward to watching the build.

A nice tip is use Eagle 1 cast aluminum mag cleaner. Spray it on , let it soak and that aluminum looks like new. It saves a lot of scrubbing time

Those bottle brushes are amazing if you snip the O-part at the handle and chuck them in a drill, like a ball-hone or similar. With the apropriate lubricant or cleaner/degreaser, they make light work of any grime.
