    As a machinist, I'll let you know that you can unscrew the tip on your dial indicator and buy a thinner longer tip. I have one on mine for rind and pinion settings up.

  • @TheAverageDutchman
    @TheAverageDutchman 4 години тому +30

    the problem you're talking about with your dial indicator is a well known problem for machinists and engineers called the cosine error. However, you can be 10 degrees off "dead on" straight and the measurement error will be 1.5% which is not that terrible if you're "just" measuring diff backlash. If you really want to be very precise about it you can calculate a compensation factor en correct for it. Personally for your application, I wouldn't bother.

    Matt, ever since you and Tom Tom posted a video on 6/18/2023 about driving the Spud truck home , I've been anxiously waiting for this day when you get it running with the newly rebuilt supercharged engine.
    Congratulations for achieving this fun and fine stage of the project t!
    It's good to see Ed up snd around, supervising the repair of the front axle of the MORRvair.

  • @c63amgblack
    @c63amgblack 5 годин тому +57

    Matt is right about the angle of the dial indicator introducing cosine error in the reading.........but its a tiny amount (with small angles) and infinitely more accurate than not measuring at all lol. He is hilarious, never change matt

    • @calholli
      @calholli 5 годин тому +3

      Depends on how precise of a measurement you are making.. It can be orders of magnitude off if you're really getting precise.

    • @duramaxdad
      @duramaxdad 4 години тому +2

      I’d argue Matt’s measuring device is dialed to the 11’s. He said 5 to 10 and got an 11. Within 10% of spec. That exceeds even Matt’s intentions.

      True on the cosine error. But you have to worry too much until you get to 45+ degrees with a .707 to 1 error. In otherwords if your true limit is .010 you reading at 45 limit is .007

    As much as I like the idea of the Morrvair getting a huge upgrade to the engine, I lean towards the idea of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
    No, the Morrvair doesn't need morr power (right now), if anything, it just needs a couple morr winches.
    It is healthy and reliable currently, and already sounds like a performance vehicle.
    The Morrvair is probably the best all-rounder you have in the fleet.
    Save the engine upgrade for if/when the Morrvair is hurt and requires morr than superficial engine repairs.
    The 6x6 sounds amazing, and with a bit of exhaust work to tame those wild decibels, she'll turn heads wherever she goes.

    I think Rhett hit the nail on the head regarding more power. Busted axles, U-joints etc. Though I guess you could break things, beef them up, break 'em again, and then beef 'em up more until you had it solid. I think more power would end up being a detrimental addition. Besides breaking stuff, you would run out of fuel more often. Besides, it sounds like a band of angels playing trumpets as it is! Spud truck is complete badassery.

    Kaulin pounding that rag through the axle tubes reminded me of my Dad's brother in law who tried to shoot a stuck rag out of a 38-55. It exploded right under the rear sight and took out a chunk of the barrel about two inches long and a half inch wide. It just barely grazed the side of his head. The bullet and the rag are still stuck in there. Kaulin was much safer. Its great to see Ed and LT, you did a great job on that engine. Thanks for the video.

    The MORRvair Has proven itself to be very capable & well balanced... as Fun as putting a Supercharger on it sounds... It might help at the high elevations where air is thin... but for normal use... I'd just go with a Fresh rebuild & some mild upgrades.... Being able to be SMOOTH & controlled with throttle response when crawling up, over, around obsiticals... having Too much raw power... that's what breaks things...you've got alot of leverage with those big tires & lots of grip and Breaking things when you're out in the middle of nowhere, where most vehicles struggle to get to or to rescue you...no thanks.. I'd build a Fresh motor that doesn't have well over 200,000 miles already on it... It definitely still sounds good, but it's tired... Fresh rebuilt naturally aspirated...

    As much as I LUV morr power I do know morr power = more broken parts. If you're good with morr shop time and morr parts ... I say go for it. Or build a clone just for showing off.

    The Spud Truck is alive and is running great. The smiles on Matt, Katelyn and LTs faces was great to see. On to playing in the rocks with the Toyota and the Tangerine. On to more power in the Morrvair.

    I could see a lil super charger add to the morr but nothing too far that risks the reliability of a mainstay in the fleet

    Don't mess with Morrvair's power barn. She does what she does better than anything else in existence. You start upping the power, you're going to have more wheel spin as opposed to torque hitting the ground. Also I agree with Rhett. You'll be snapping axles. It's already the best setup for what it is. But hey, it's your rig. Do what you want, and I'll watch. Prove me wrong.

    the Morrvair needs torque not speed for what its used for (Merlin and Rory know this)

  • @ladyfritz8r
    @ladyfritz8r 2 години тому

    I don't think the Morrvair needs more power, but I think it's inevitable it will get it. It's perfectly in balance now so why not mess that up and break something by overpowering something else, so you can start the round of upgrades all over again. Isn't that the point of these things? I hope a whole bunch of people go over to follow LT after that build and hanging out with you. His personality comes through this format as fun and warm and smart - which means entertaining

    You definitively need more power, it doesn't necessarily makes it undrivable, a friend had a supercharged '19 Mustang GT500 and it drives totally stock until he punch it and that thing puts down 900 hp at the wheels, dyno tested. An expert like LT doing that job will get you there with reliability

    An aluminum 6.0, a good set of heads and a cam is all the morvair needs. Supercharger adds so much complexity and heat that it just wouldn't soot the application.

  • @marvindebot3264
    @marvindebot3264 5 годин тому +4

    MORR POWER! Supercharger tho, not a turbo for offroad, you want that low-down grunt.
