    Which is the best small recorder for video production? Is it the Zoom F1? The Tascam DR-10L? If you are in the game, you've definitely heard of the DR-10L - but have you heard of the F1? It seems like Zoom is doing there best to compete with the wildly successful Tascam DR10L, and in this video I do my best to sift through which one should be right for you.

    Great review! I own the dr10l and when I saw the zoom coming out with this I said Let's see how it work but since I'm a wedding videographer the form factor is a big deal to me, smaller size better for us, and that dual recorder from tascam is a great option. Thanks for the review I have all my questions answered.

    Thanks for this Oliver. I might recommend you clip the mic to your shirt as no one is going to hold these Lavs like a broadcast microphone. We also get audio percussive pops that may not represent real world use. Nice studio. Love the light and the handheld aesthetic. All the best

    Using a Tascam DR100-MK3, 2 DR10x for lav and shotgun use. The safety track is great, the gain control isn't good on the 10x ...just low med and high. So the 6 or 12db safety track is really a necessity. The lavs I use are Aputure A.Lav. Works great. Chose it over a dual wireless system.

    Great channel and content, subscribed!! I’m considering getting one of these two. However beside from its original design of use(with lav), i kind of want it to be a backup recorder alongside my camera sometimes. As I use an audio interface(beachtek) into my camera, and want to save a backup file with this type of tiny recorder. Which one in you opinion is better for sending a 3.5mm input from sources other than a lav mic?
    Ps. I also own a few zoom capsules/H5. The F1 seems easier to mount on camera rigs, but the backup track feature and the form factor on the DL10 is much more desirable. Can you help me out with any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    I’m looking currently at the Sennheiser ew 112 P G4 to plug directly in camera, and rig a cable to my a6500 to have both audio input from the receiver to camera, and audio output so I can monitor audio on my headphones. I like this option bc my audio is immediately synced, and I find the set up is simpler. Would you generally just recommend recording audio on a separate line instead, recording into something like a Zoom H6?

    • @OliverJHughes

    ZOOM F1 seems a little better than Tascam DR10?

  • @crr5699
    @crr5699 3 роки тому

    The Senheizer ME 2-II Lav mic is noticeably better than the included DR-10L included Lav Mic. In side-by-side comparisons I did, they were very similar, the tascam was almost too crisp/sensitive at the highs, and the Senheizer a bit more bass heavy, but the mid range sounded much more dynamic and vibrant in Senheizer, and a bit more flat in the Tascam. I figure it will be easier to lower the bass and raise the highs if I want to in post, and not as easy to make those mid range tones more vibrant. I returned the Tascam DR-10L and ordered the Tascam DR-10CS from CVP dot com (UK) for almost twice the price, because I wanted the Audio Line out with locking mechanism to potentially plug into a transmitter. Only down side is the 10CS doesn’t come with a Lav Mic and the firmware is different so that you only have L/M/H on levels setting rather than L/ML/M/MH/H on the 10L which was a big disappointment and I might rerun it and go back to the 10L since I’ll probably not end up transmitting, and having an extra Lav Mic would be nice. But the Senheizer Lav Mic upgrade was definitely worth it, however if you’re not super picky about your audio and don’t notice the smallest of subtleties and nuance in audio, you likely won’t notice much of a difference between the Tascam DR-10L included Lav mic and the Senheizer ME-II Lav mic.

    Oliver, are you normalizing your UA-cam video audio? -16 LUFS? Your levels seems to jump all over the place.

    • @OliverJHughes
      @OliverJHughes  6 років тому +2

      They jump all over the place because I didn’t touch the audio signals for each mic-just a raw test. And no, I don’t normalize to -16, I just get the master as loud as possible without UA-cam turning it down!

    • @hobbyrx2267

      GFFmatt do u know of a less expensive “set and forget” alternative to Izotope to normalize to accepted standards?

    • @TechReflex
      @TechReflex 6 років тому +1

      Oliver J Hughes If you don't want to touch the mic levels, and least lower your intro music down, it's very high compared to your voice levels.

    • @OliverJHughes
      @OliverJHughes  6 років тому

      I completely process and “touch” the mic levels. Except for the test signals) I don’t “normalize”-big difference. I go through a post production signal chain every time that ends up having dialogue peaks around -2 to -4 dbfs. And of course I adjust music to taste. And I personally like a big jump in music volume for the intro.
      I think this first guys comment, a) misunderstands the purpose of normalization, he’s confusing it for compression (true normalization is about average loudness, it would have nothing to do with levels “jumping all over the place”, only compression can do that”. And b) is missing the point of a mic review.
