I think the sky dweller is the best Rolex model out there. It's my favorite and the design of the annual calendar is genius. Would get this over the GMT any day of the week. As you stated, the movement is the star. I prefer steel with batons, I hate the roman numerals on rolex watches, I think it makes the dial cluttered.
I have the black dial and it is beautiful, elegant and classy in two tone. Black and gold combination oozes charm and poise. The presentation of Rolex in-house 9001 movement with annual calendar, GMT, date and time ructions all in one simple timeless dial is ingenious. I hope to add all different colored dials to my collection. Sky Dweller offers great value at current MSRP. This is going to be a future classic.
I originally wanted the all stainless blue dial. Good luck finding that. Got the same watch as you, and now like it more than the SS. Hey Rolex, bring this with a Jubilee bracelet, hidden clasp!
I was lucky enough to be one of the first in my city to get it in August 2017. The blue is very subtle that it looks black at night or indoors with low light but during the day it shines! In the video, someone commented that the Cyclopes magnifies part of GMT wheel but it does not in my case. Very happy with this piece and made quite the appreciation over the years.
I am lucky enough to admire this piece everyday I have it on my wrist. It is truly an exquisite piece. Rolex simply took it out of the fence with the blue dial.
The problem with a blue dial (for any watch) is that it will always be more informal than formal and it does not always contrast well with the colours of clothing that you may wear. In contrast, black and white dials are classic and timeless colours that are at home in both formal and informal situations. The black is in my opinion the best of the Sky Dweller dials as it looks very sharp and contrasts so well with the red markers. :)
Another great video ID Guy. The blue dial Sky Dwelller is one of the best looking Rolex IMHO. Simply stunning, this watch definitely does not fly under the radar.

As for the cyclops, eliminate it would make reading the watch much better, especially when the red is in the 3'o clock position as the magnifier hides the red square somewhat. Also to mention, the second sweep hand should have a arrow at the end for pointing instead and make it red as the daytona paul newman has. Other than that, all other functions are acceptable for this model. I agree with your comment around the cyclops and how it 'clutters' the dial somewhat. Its a shame but unavoidable unless you went dateless, but that would be nonsensical with this piece. I tried one on recently, a black dialled steel and gold and it was a beautiful thing indeed, great on my 7.5 wrist, although one thing to mention is the weight it has. Obviously due to the movement (complications) the case is thick and with a strong taper on the bracelet, it does feel a little top heavy and I wonder if after some hours this would become annoying?
The layout has always seemed a bit messy to me. However, I agree that the GMT is brilliant. It is brilliant in its simplicity and brilliant in its pragmatism.
I said this in other videos but in my honest opinion, I believe that the calibre 9001 movement will go down in history as one of Rolex's most brilliant designs. I also feel that GMT wheel should only have a window for the top three numbers and maybe a coin Edge bezel. I have a 7 and a half inch wrist so the 42 mm is a sweet spot for me as well. Thank you.
Agreed William, it is a stunning watch in every category (I saw your comment earlier and knew you would like what I had to say about it) Thank you for the comment!
The sky dweller is the most stunning pieces I ever seen on d rolex lineup, but most importantly is the 9001 movement rolex ever design,I think the 9001 movement is d most expensive among rolex.
The watch size also spreads out the thickness better. Besides, us guys with bigger wrists need some watches just for us too, right? So many 38-40mm watches out there for smaller wristed/preferenced people.
Good video, but I feel you missed a great opportunity, as I suggested in my email to you, to do a design study with the watch on a Jubilee bracelet, and with the day of the week display like on the day-date. As a professional pilot (and a trained Industrial Designer) who has owned a GMT Master (16750 Pepsi) for 36 years, the Sky Dweller is now the perfect watch for me in the twilight of my career as an International B-777 pilot. To those naysayers who think it's too big or too thick, I wholeheartedly disagree. I have several pilot friends who wear the Omega Planet Ocean GMT in the cockpit, and NONE find its 43.5mm diameter and 17.05mm thick case too big, so why is 42mm and 13.9mm too large? BTW, both of these pilots have much smaller wrists and hands than my 7-5/8" wrists and 10-3/4" hand spread. Oh, and I love the design choice of the offset GMT ring. According to my AD, I should have this watch in a black or white dial in the next few months, so I'll let you know about the cyclops... Give me a call.
BTW the Patek Philippe Calatrava Pilot Travel Time 5524G-001 Pilot's Watch is also 42mm and 10.9mm thick, but no one says that watch is too big. Yes, a bit thinner, but it's also not and annual calendar either! It's also $35K USD more expensive, but hey it's a Patek Philippe. Also, let's not forget the Omega Speedmaster Professional, at 42mm and 14.0mm thick!
Curtis! I missed your email!! Damnit. I remember seeing it one saturday evening and I got mixed in with everything else... But it is a terrific watch and being a pilot I'm sure you are one of a few who can really substantiate how suitable it is for the task! Thank you as always for the comments and emails, sir!
@@ID-Guy I forwarded the email to you again. Also, did you ever read my 10+ page article on Iconic Pilots Watch Types of the 20th Century? Another good topic for a lengthy video that I'd like to collaborate with you in making.
Totally agree on the Jubilee bracelet and the design study. And funny thing, I am seriously looking at the AQUA TERRA 150M OMEGA MASTER CO‑AXIAL GMT 43 MM. It fits just fine on my 7" wrist. Titanium bracelet makes it very light.
You will really love the 2 tone jubilee bracelet with the white dial(it' a opalescent white). Check it out and you will agree. I am a mechanical engineer and test turbine engines at a very well known turbine engine mfgr. As a pilot, you know what I mean. This girl surpasses my daytona's I have and she has a great wrist presentation. 😅❤
Thanks for the review.. Spot on comments! My wrist is pretty big. This will be my next watch. Steel & white gold. I only miss the white gold also on the links of the bracelet, not just the bezel. But I suppose the price would sky rocket. I would pay for the premium..
Can you even tell the difference in color between the white gold bezel and the stainless steel case, aside from the bezel being highly polished? If that same bezel was made of SS, it wouldn't look any different. That white gold bezel would also scratch much easier than SS.
It’s a lovely watch, and an equally lovely video, but I do have a problem with a great number of GMT watches that I just can’t get past. It’s the use of the number 24. In GMT / UTC TIME midnight is not expressed as 24:00, it’s 00:00, so it makes no sense to me that “24” is used on the 2nd time zone ring on this watch, or that the Exp II that has “24” engraved at the top of its bezel. Fortunately for me, and my obvious OCD tendencies , the GMT has always triangle to represent the zero hour, and so my P-series GMT II will likely be with me until the end (of my) time.
I love the idea of this watch but there is an optical illusion created by the cyclops and crown that makes the GMT ring look off-center. It's always the first thing that I see and it would make me bonkers as an owner.
After watching & listening to this video .. I'm almost be embarrassed to be an American Rolex owner .. very classy ,,love the English spin on Rolex lol
116713LN here....i love it. Can someone please remind me what the red dot shown mostly @ 8 is for. Someone once told me but i forgot. Oh ok it's the month right? Brilliant!!!
I love the watch. Brilliant way to do the complications. I love the size on my wrist. I hate the cyclops. As a designer, wouldn't it be cleaner without the cyclops? So my vote is ditch the cyclops, In fact, give the option with or without.
Although I would prefer 40mm just like all other modern classic models. I feel that Sky-Dweller's size was intentional to show the masculine/showy side, considering it was also originally introduced in PM only.
Regarding the size, how about the fact that it's both an annual Calendar and a GMT! Plus it's a pilot's watch, they are traditionally bigger to be more legible in the cockpit.
I have to say that the Sky Dweller is a pretty stunning watch that I have warmed to considerably after the shock I had when I first saw it. However as you rightly point out that bezel is slightly too dominant (something I think I can forgive) but unfortunately the cyclops absolutely destroys this watch in a way that cyclops' do not do on any other Rolex model. It really has to go. It's terrible.
Wish my sd had crown protectors wings on her as the crown is too naked, if smacked, it might be a issue. Also a exhibition back would be fantastic. I have a 2 tone white opalescent dial jubilee bracelet model, love it throughly. If she had the above comments, it would bring her to the next level.😅😅😅❤
Do you think sport watches and dress watches will start to decrease in size? In your opinion what is the optimal size for a sport diver? Dress watch? Thanks for great videos!!
Credits to Rolex and its 9001 movement, however, I would like to see a decorated 9001on display in the case back. This will elevate the Sky-dweller into Haute Horology and as you rightfully said, at 42 mm is too large.
And yet despite your silly comment, they make amazing and highly rugged and durable watches that stand the test of time and hold their value and often appreciate.
@@somerandomperson8282 Hello. Thanks for your appreciation. I regret that you found my comment silly. everything sounds great with Sky Dweller until you try on your wrist. It's too think and chunky. Thicker than Submariner. It is not suitable for formal suit wear.
The current sky dwellers are too big. So it became weird and loud imo. It needs to scale down a little. Also, the Yachtmaster 2 is the most complex rolex there is though. edit: wait nvm, you mentioned it in this video.
Sorry, but both Rolex and Tim Mosso say it's Rolex's most complicated watch... I'll believe them. Also, if the Datejust 41 is not too big at 41mm, pray tell why this is watch at 42mm? It fits my average sized 7-5/8" wrist perfectly.
Interesting analysis, IDGUY. I think Rolex making the Sky Dweller in the same vain and model range as the Datejust and Day Date was no mistake. Before Rolex rebranded all of their watches as aspirational status symbols following the quartz crisis, there were achievement piece models, and the pricey but TOTL tool models worn by actual professionals. Think Mercedes Unimog vs S-Class. The GMT Master was designed to be used by people wearing suits, hats and ties as work uniforms, but these jet plane pilots were professionals nonetheless. A jet setter is not a pilot, but rather a passenger, and the Sky Dweller was made for the well heeled passenger with frequent flier miles. That’s why I refer to the Sky Dweller as the “international corporate lawyer’s watch”, because that’s the sort of person who practically dwells on planes in business or first class, and that’s the sort of person who’d buy the watch. In short, I don’t consider the Sky Dweller the ultimate or complete GMT Master, but rather the jet setting 21st century cousin of the Datejust and Day Date.
The only gribe i have against SKD, and its a big one, is that it is BIGGGGG. the SKD is so thick i just cant wear it. Saw it on a bigger guys wrist and it looks good though. Too bad for me.
@@kingarchnyc Hey, I can't disagree. You get essentially the same watch, minus the Annual Calendar and GMT function. Plus $9,900 USD for Datejust 41 fluted bezel in steel versus 14,800 USD for the SD. The $4,900 saved will buy a lot!
John, I feel that you missed the entire point of the video. While the GMT Master is the quintessential pilot's watch, it is in fact still a tool watch, but unlike the Submariner, it is worn by professionals in a jacket and tie. As such both IDGuy and I feel that the GMT Master is better suited to a Jubilee versus the Oyster bracelet, in other words a dressier tool watch. The Sky Dweller is the continuation of the professional pilot's watch that is a bit more elegant than the GMT Master, and in true Rolex fashion, they took the Datejust and brilliantly modified it to make a dressier, and a higher complication sports pilot/traveler's watch. Just look at a photo of a 41mm blue dial Datejust and compare it to the 42 mm blue dial steel Sky Dweller. Yes it's 1mm bigger in diameter, and 1.9mm thicker, but it has an annual calendar and a GMT function. Rolex didn't need another GMT Master or Explorer II, it needed this watch for the professional pilot and world traveler. Just my opinion, but I am a professional international airline pilot, and a trained Industrial Designer since 1978. As such this is the perfect watch, and is why my AD will be holding one for me.
BTW, the Sky Dweller is not in the Rolex "Professional" lineup, it is in their "Classic" lineup. So not technically a tool watch per se, and it's in the same category with the Datejust..
I watch ads for you😁 -great videos you bring for us to enjoy and I thank you🍻💙 This watch is serious mess😬 -how much cluster duck🦆can you fit in a watch dial? ROLEX: Yes. -😂🍻
No busier than a Daytona dial. If anything it's one of the cleaner annual Calendars with a date and GMT function I've seen. Doesn't add pushers, and cleverly uses the indices to indicate month without needing to add a more cluttered abbreviated spelling of each Month somewhere on the dial.
Tell me about an annual calendar with a GMT function that is less busy please... and where this beats other annual calendars is that it’s so legible and easy to read the time. Many others shrink the clock face.
Except its~ you know~ butt ugly the upsidedown Red triangle with the white fill. The inner dial with all the numbers visible, cluttering up the dial. All horrible looking. The function and complications are great but so ugly
@@tkm3207 I own one, a black dial. I have 7-5/8"/19.3cm wrists and to me it's perfect. Also, compare it to an Omega Planet Ocean GMT, another watch I love but at 43.5mm and 17.04mm thick, I passed on it for now.
"the question we have to ask" is getting a touch lame .. know it's your style of presentation, but please be a bit more innovative verbally, as it gets irritating
Sky-Dweller took the word “failure” to new heights and different time zones. Looks like a fat, weird Datejust, costs seriously money and overall impresses no one. An interesting calibre is not enough to make it an interesting watch. IDGuy’s retrospective “If Rolex...” approach is not the engaging and well documented style we are used to.
That would make it smaller in diameter and in height than a Datejust II or 41. Not going to happen especially with the Ring Command Bezel, and both an annual calendar and a GMT complication. Heck, 3mm thinner would make it 10.9mm, thinner than even my vintage 16750 GMT Master at 12.5mm. An Omega Speedmaster Professional is 42mm and 14.4mm thick, and no one calls that watch a pig. It's called a classic.

And funny thing, I am seriously looking at the AQUA TERRA 150M
OMEGA MASTER CO‑AXIAL GMT 43 MM.
I will buy one, it will be my second Rolex
Love my Sky!
Cyclopes lense is no fault. Gorgeous
Yeah, i think they learned the lesson with the Yacht Master 2. Lol
Hahhahaha exactly!!!!!!!!!!!!
on my 6.5 inch wist the 42mm fluted bezel just look too big for me
It’s a lovely watch, and an equally lovely video, but I do have a problem with a great number of GMT watches that I just can’t get past.
Love my sd, she's definitely the cat's meow!!😅❤
I love mine - bi-metal with black dial. Perfect
The blue sky dweller I will always remember it as The Maikel Jordan watch
Why?
Dutch Claws - UA-cam Michael Jordan speaks at Kobe’s Funeral. He made this the most difficult to get Rolex ever. Beautiful speech, beautiful watch.
I got a 2019 yellow gold sky and i loveee itt
Unfortunately the stainless version is not available just lime the sports watches.
its an insane marvel of watchmaking!!! great vid dude!~!
The Rolex Skydweller is a master piece! Sorry if you have a small wrist, this watch is clearly not for you.
Michael Liu false I have a small wrist and it sits nicely. Looks a lil bulky but it’s a big boy watch LoL
The narrator is Australian, not English.
Merry Xmas old bean! 🧐
116713LN here....i love it.
Can someone please remind me what the red dot shown mostly @ 8 is for.
Someone once told me but i forgot.
Oh ok it's the month right? Brilliant!!!
Albert Bremner the red square tells you the month you are in
August
BEST OF LUCK
I love the watch. Brilliant way to do the complications. I love the size on my wrist. I hate the cyclops. As a designer, wouldn't it be cleaner without the cyclops? So my vote is ditch the cyclops, In fact, give the option with or without.
As an Professional Pilot and a Industrial Designer myself, I love the cyclops... It's quintessential Rolex!
Blue stand out
Although I would prefer 40mm just like all other modern classic models. I feel that Sky-Dweller's size was intentional to show the masculine/showy side, considering it was also originally introduced in PM only.
And to just increase the presence of the sub-dial I'm sure. Hell, I'd love it in 40mm's too! Thanks as always for the comment Lawrence
Regarding the size, how about the fact that it's both an annual Calendar and a GMT! Plus it's a pilot's watch, they are traditionally bigger to be more legible in the cockpit.
@@ID-Guy How about the fact that you always produce good quality content that give me the urge to comment?😄
Looks like a jumbo of numbers , tut tut and people slag off the air king 👑
Fair points, but we cannot all have the same sized wrist.
Sky dwellers rule!!😅❤
Do you think sport watches and dress watches will start to decrease in size? In your opinion what is the optimal size for a sport diver? Dress watch? Thanks for great videos!!
Joe Calandra 36mm is my Max and 33mm my minimum. That size range is the most proportionally pleasing imho!
@@Youcantleavethisempty01my wife agrees
Credits to Rolex and its 9001 movement, however, I would like to see a decorated 9001on display in the case back. This will elevate the Sky-dweller into Haute Horology and as you rightfully said, at 42 mm is too large.
The Sky Dweller is beautifully designed and executed. But I find the Breitling Unitime to be superior in function. I would welcome your thoughts.
GShock is also much more functional...but its not a rolex is it.
@@ptbot3294 I am still developing an opinion about Rolex. I don't consider any brand as the be-all end-all of time pieces.
Rolex the commercial brand that loved marketing more than watchmaking!
And yet despite your silly comment, they make amazing and highly rugged and durable watches that stand the test of time and hold their value and often appreciate.
@@somerandomperson8282 Hello.
Thanks for your appreciation. I regret that you found my comment silly.
Whether Rolex industrial watches are very sturdy and durable that stand the test of time, that Rolex industrial watches retain their value and be appreciated... I don't disagree.
But to say that Rolex industrial watches are amazing, I very respectfully apologize: No, NO, a thousand times NO. Rolex owes everything to others, including subcontracting. Its patents, its movements, its innovations, its cases ... Rolex has built his story telling and his fortune with cunning.
Whether you mention the astonishing Breguet, Blancpain, Girard-Perregaux, IWC, Patek-Philippe, Ulysse Nardin, Vacheron-Constantin, Zenith ... Ok, OK, a thousand times OK ...
But not the:
Jean Aegler Rolex
Zenith el Primero Rolex
Valjoux 72 Rolex
etc ...
Sorry for not sharing your craze for industrial watches that are EVERYTHING but amazing.
Cordially.

Bonjour.
Cordialement.
For those who own salute !
I would consider a S/S Blue Sky-Dweller to grace my wrist, so if you would like to, please donate one to me - Thank you.
Don’t think so. The blue dial looks ok but black dial is a sure no. Ofc if you just buy to please yourself feel free.
everything sounds great with Sky Dweller until you try on your wrist. It's too think and chunky. Thicker than Submariner. It is not suitable for formal suit wear.
Love it but the date at 3 is ugly...
I personally think the sky-dweller is an abomination.
Datejust 41 blue
What family?
The current sky dwellers are too big. So it became weird and loud imo. It needs to scale down a little. Also, the Yachtmaster 2 is the most complex rolex there is though.
edit: wait nvm, you mentioned it in this video.
not everybody likes small feminine watches..
This and the OP are the only Rolexes I like. The others are just meh.
The only gribe i have against SKD, and its a big one, is that it is BIGGGGG. the SKD is so thick i just cant wear it. Saw it on a bigger guys wrist and it looks good though. Too bad for me.
Not sure why anyone would need to know the month...
On an annual calendar, it's imperative that the month be displayed, or else it just doesn't work.. Think about it.
Curtis Arndt I just think a day date is more useful
@@kingarchnyc Hey, I can't disagree. You get essentially the same watch, minus the Annual Calendar and GMT function. Plus $9,900 USD for Datejust 41 fluted bezel in steel versus 14,800 USD for the SD. The $4,900 saved will buy a lot!
Curtis Arndt just saying the month, leap year are so excessive and obscure the dial...
it needs another paragraph of text on the dial.
lol!
This is my grail
He keeps saying the family, but there is no family.
He had no kids Rolex is a charity not own by any family.
You can afford a 30k watch and you don t know what month you are in ? 😅 PS: Richard Mille
In my opinion it looks too busy with the fluted bezel. If it is a tool watch a plain bezel like the Explorer would be better.
Fluted bezel is easier to turn.
Curtis Amdt You are correct, and hey Rolex, for this very reason, put this on a Jubilee bracelet with the hidden clasp please. Talk about a Grail!
BTW, the Sky Dweller is not in the Rolex "Professional" lineup, it is in their "Classic" lineup. So not technically a tool watch per se, and it's in the same category with the Datejust..
I watch ads for you😁 -great videos you bring for us to enjoy and I thank you🍻💙
This watch is serious mess😬 -how much cluster duck🦆can you fit in a watch dial?
ROLEX: Yes. -😂🍻
Busy dial......
Hands are lost on this dial....... cyclops is too domineering, but overall it is a great design
Concept is interesting and the movement/complication is awesome. But its frankly way way too thiiick. Its like wearing a golf ball on your wrist....
Don't ever buy an Omega Speedmaster Professional Moon watch, it's the same size.... 42mm X 14mm! Wait, no one says that watch is too thick?
Curtis Arndt maybe, but i have worn it on the wrist. It seemed Deepsea thick to me. Have you worn it?
@@tkm3207 I own one, a black dial. I have 7-5/8"/19.3cm wrists and to me it's perfect. Also, compare it to an Omega Planet Ocean GMT, another watch I love but at 43.5mm and 17.04mm thick, I passed on it for now.
Remove all of the text on the dial except "Rolex" and also remove the hideous magnifying glass and you have yourself a clean, classy watch.
"the question we have to ask" is getting a touch lame .. know it's your style of presentation, but please be a bit more innovative verbally, as it gets irritating
i am shure u can afford a better microphone
Sky-Dweller took the word “failure” to new heights and different time zones. Looks like a fat, weird Datejust, costs seriously money and overall impresses no one. An interesting calibre is not enough to make it an interesting watch. IDGuy’s retrospective “If Rolex...” approach is not the engaging and well documented style we are used to.
NO!
It's a pig .... way too big and way too fat.
Also the non centered circle looks wrong.
Should be a 40 mm and 3mm thinner.
@@cnaarndt oink oink!
