    This is how I currently run peck tap cycles but I've always wonder why the G84 canned cycle cannot make use of a Q command for its peck increments? That would be a nice way to eliminate some redundant code. Thanks for the video Haas. You guys rock.

      I wondered the same thing...our VF-4 just ignores it.
      Additionally our machine came from Champion Machine of Houston and no one bothered to set the 133 to on.
      The people here at this shop are clueless on this.
      I've got a combined 30 years playing with and programming G code machines and have issues with a supervisor with 6 months running things.

    Prolive advange you use a Q value on fanuc. This is one of the few instances where fanuc control edges over Haas. On fanuc peck tapping is a single line code,very easy and also less room for human error. Hopefully Haas adapts the fanuc(and some Mitsubishi) for peck tapping.

    A word to the wise; If you put a new Z depth after your initial G84 line without a X or Y it will go to the last Z value.
    Example:
    T3 M6 (1/4-20 TAPRH)
    G54 G17 G80 G90 G40
    G00 X0. Y0. S800 M03

    Z-.4
    Z-.6
    Z-.8
    Z-1.
    G80
    M01
    ^^^ THIS EXAMPLE WILL TAP TO THE LAST Z WITH NO PECK!

      Same here, I just started working for a company who bought a VF-4 a few years back and they didn't have the 133 turned on. Additionally they have used Gibbs cam which for some reason puts a G81 or G83 command in the program when you specifically pick "Tap".
      The sad thing is the cell lead has never seen a CNC a year ago and is clueless on programs. He literally "drilled" the tap in the part and snapped it off.
      I spent two hours arguing with him about the program being "wrong", and I guess my thirty years of programming and playing with G-code machines didn't matter.....

    Thought HAAS was silly when it didn't orient spindle tapping same hole. Kept purchasing Spindle Orientation on each HAAS and modified Post Process to run Spindle Orientation for every G84 command. Go figure this option can be turned on without the purchase or Spindle Orientation. Too late for 3 machines I own, but good reference for future machines.

    I'm using HSM, with a generic HAAS post, and it's generate this code, the first peck is ok, start on Z5 go down to Z-3, the second and the rest, is go up to z70 and start the taping from here. Why is it not using the R5 , instead of the z70 which is the retract height, for move to each hole?

    G0 Z70.

    Mark, I am curious why an X co-ordinate needs to be entered in front of the new Z depths for the G84 Peck Tap Cycle? I thought, no co-ordinates, no X,Y movement. I'm guessing it has something to do with signaling a return to R otherwise the tap would just continue down to the successive Z depths? Thank you in advance for your answer and providing these instructional videos.

    • @rayzinz5938
      @rayzinz5938 8 років тому

      +Lee Putman I'm curious about that as well. My initial thought is the extra X coordinates were for illustrative purposes. I think if they were required you'd need to enter both X and Y for each line. I think it just drives home the point that you're staying at the same position. I'd love to hear from Haas on this or maybe just have someone try it and report the results.

      +Lee Putman Hi Lee, thanks for reaching out. The control needs an XY move of some sort to trigger the cycle. If we don’t command an X, a Y, or both, it won’t tap. The Z, on each line, is to peck at a different Z depth for that pass. Good question, hope this helps!

      Adel Tabsh - Setting 133 was introduced back in Mill Software Version M12.09. If your Mill is newer than that, you may need to give your local Haas Factory Outlet a call, to make sure you have the Rigid Tapping Option (Parameter 57:4 RIGID TAPPING must be on), and they can verify your Setting 133. - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day

    Is the repeat rigid tap feature available on all VF mills. I found the 130 feature on my VF2 mill but not 133 feature. Do they use different number for this repeat rigid tap feature? My tap broke every time if I tap deeper than 1/2 inch. I tried to tap several times on the deep holes but the tap holes got loosen on top and tighten on the bottom. I have checked the speed, feed, coolant mixture, and they're all meet the requirements. Any comments or suggestions will be appreciated.

      For this issue I'd recommending reaching out to your local Haas Factory Outlet Service/Apps department; they can help you out. On older mills, (like before 2003) Repeat Rigid Tapping wasn’t a Setting, it was a Parameter. Your HFO can help you with this specific machine. Question, in your second hole why did you input the line X1.0 Z-.5, it should read the depth from Z-.5 from the original G84 line of code right? Can you please clarify if this is not the case.

    • @rayzinz5938
      @rayzinz5938 8 років тому

      +Paulo Esquenazi The G84 command is modal and it "remembers" the last input values for each address. Thus, if you simply put a new X,Y position for hole #2 it would tap to the last Z value it was given (Z-2.5) in the line above.

Our 6-32 tap, with peck set to 0.313, S320, R is at 0.3" above the material & F10.0, creates tap sized holes. The bottom 1/8" or so of the hole has thread, but the rest of the hole is the tap diameter. Our code format matches what this video shows.

    • @shadowdsfire
      @shadowdsfire 5 років тому +1

      Canned cycle are basically G-codes that makes the machine do series of actions instead of one particular movement. They are kinda "shortcut" g-code and make things much simpler to program and easier to understand. Rigid tapping I believe is when the tap is solidly held by something, instead of into a holder that has some "slack" to it. This means the machine has to orient its angle and start at the same exact location when starting the movements, and the movement has to be perfectly synchronised with the rotation of the tap.

    • @keithlucas6260
      @keithlucas6260 5 років тому

      @@shadowdsfire ....plus you have to add M29 S300 or whatever speed prior to the G84....this only works on FANUC controllers like Dal-Lih and Mori's.

    why not we use Q instead for adding multiple depth.

      That's how it works on Fanuc controllers. Fanuc may have an active patent on that system (just like they do with the G54.1 coordinate system) and so Haas had to come up with a workaround.

    How about if we are using a canned cycle?

    What is peck tapping used for ? I asked my boss and the tool maker and they never heard of it or can find a reason for it and we have special taps for each material we use and I thought it would be handy for the Ti but we got special taps for them recently and as one said you would probably break the tap as its cut would start on work hardened area if you did that on Ti.

      Hayden Verstin on deeply tapped holes the spiral chips build up and twist around the tap binding in the hole, reversing the tap and bringing it out of the hole from a depth before the chips wrap up allows them to fall off the tap and not end up back in the hole, so the next depth section is also figured by how the chips form as well. This has saved thousands of broken taps through the years

      Hayden Verstin- I forgot to mention I used peck tapping mainly with spiral flute taps, or blowing out the hole with each raise of the tap if it was a spiral point tap

      Jadon Cramer quick question, I know this is an old comment, but how do you define a “deep hole” is it a ratio of the diameter of the tap? We’ve had some issues with some 4-40 taps and 2-?? Taps recently and I stumbled upon peck tapping. Just curious what your formula may be, if you’re willing to share

    why not just use "Q" ?

    • @rayzinz5938

      +MegaJohnhammond The Haas CNC control doesn't use the Q address to assign peck depth in a tapping cycle. This video essentially shows a workaround for that.

      Ditto above....if it's in the program it will ignore it....additionally putting a M29 S300 ridgid tap command will alarm the controller.

    Just use Q in your cycle 😂its easy
    .. we don't do it in cosmos vcm800

    So many years have passed and Haas' G84 still doesn't accept the Q value. Consider this before purchasing a CNC machine from Haas. It would be a nightmare if you had 20 - 200 deep holes that needed tapping. Silly machine!
