She is one of my favorite characters... In the books, she uses profanity to perfectly emphasize her point of view. She is brilliant and ruthlessly cunning!
She uses it as an equalizer…to pry her way into the glass box of the boys club. She shows men that she shouldn’t be treated gently while being marginalized and not taken seriously. She uses it to show them that they had better take her seriously, because she can hang in the roughest of sensibilities…and she knows where to hurt you.
@@gregglesmigregglesmi3633 No, stop with your critical gender theory analysis. She does it because she enjoys it. Breaking social norms is a massive flex at that level. In the books, she does it with women, in private and with people far below her on the totem pole too.
Government is more powerful than any corporation and the only reason they think it tilts the other way is because we poor public servants are always looking for some fat private sector payout down the road... but I'm not looking and by the time they pull the strings to force me out it'll be too late...." I wish we had politicians as dedicated and fearless as Avasarala is.
I love how she doesn't even bother to shoot down Errinwright's pathetic attempt to strawman her argument "So you really believe he was trying to destroy the Earth, is that right?", just smoothly points out that it was probably an accident brought about by his hubris. I really love how when she first says she's going to rain hellfire down, he looks sort of surprised in an amused "oh, this is new, you're really going for bluster?" sort of way, turning into genuine fear as he realises it's NOT bluster. Unlike him and so many other rich and powerful people, she turned down an opportunity to flee Earth and get somewhere (temporarily) safe, she decided to live or die with her citizens, she said her goodbyes to her beloved husband, and she is fucking PISSED enough that she is absolutely willing to destroy her own career to punish Mao.
I love how you can see that under the ultimatum, she's genuinelu getting emotional, that the mask is slipping ever so slightly. What a fantastic performance.
I can tell from her character that even that slip of the mask was calculated for his benefit so that its no secret if they want to deal him and his buddy Mao will be doing things her way and there is no compromising.
I don't think it was a slip. I think it was very intentional. She knows exactly what she is saying and allowing the rage to come to the surface for the purpose of instilling fear.
"Tell them that Government is more powerful than *any* corporation, and the only reason they think it tilts the other way, is because we poor public servants are always looking for some fat private sector payoff down the road... but *I'm not looking*..." FUCKING COMRADE AVASARALA!!!
@@thegrimmretails3777 her title is deputy undersec he is the undersec. That's the reasoning. But as errinwright himself says in season 1, she's basically accountable to no one.
The way i understand it is the deputy undersecetary is the highest rank of non-partisan public servant meaning she's not elected. I believe that Errinwright and his boss are elected and are without the powers that Avasarala has as highest ranking public servant.

I do too. Unfortunately, she didn't know Errinwright was working with Mao until much later on in the books. Scenes like these are one of the perks of bringing in Avasarala a book early.
@@andrewxu3602 yeah. But it’s hit or miss when they make up new stuff. Like all of last season, that was NOT the Avasarala I know and love. I was sooo disappointed with how they wrote her into this past season. Garbage.
@@gregglesmigregglesmi3633 I haven't gotten to that part of the books yet, but if I had to guess, the reason they wrote Avasarala that way in Season 5 was to show that the death of her husband had softened her up a bit. Thus, she's no longer the hardass that we all remember her being.
@@andrewxu3602 on the contrary. She doesn’t really appear in that book. So they wrote an entire storyline for her on earth. And I hate it. Thy actually make her much more ruthless and morally corrupt in the tv show story.

As a historian of the EIC this element of the series has always been one of my favourite parts!
This role was made for Shohreh Aghdashloo, I can't imagine anyone else playing it as well as she does. Every movement and the tone of her voice is absolutely perfect.
There was Anderson Dawes, Jules-Pierre Mao, Errinwright, Peaches, Murtry. And then, in last season all we had left was that c.nt inaros. Villains quality decline in Expanse was staggering.

Feels like this message was intended for Erinwright as much as Jules-Pierre Mao. 😜
Keep your friends close...

Avasarala calls it Tuesday.
Love the character, love the actress, love the voice. she assures dominance :) waiting for new seasons .
