What riff is he playing when he starts the demo or better yet 1st 2 riffs , the really spooky suspensful one that reminds me of steely dan maybe and then the 2nd blues rock riff kinda think it's a slash riff but not sure they right after they r both on tip of my tongue
Here they are, in order...Josie/Steely Dan...Oh Well/Fleetwood Mac...Run To You/Bryan Adams...Don't take Me Alive/Steely Dan...Jamie's Cryin'/Van Halen...Badge/Cream...Dream On/Aerosmith
@@timpierceguitar ur a legend uncle Tim thank u very much !!
@@timpierceguitar I love the Oh Well riff! The iconic guitar solo from my teen years.
@@timpierceguitar Thank you Tim!!
Yes, thank you brother ♠️
The guitar looks amazing! Thanks Tim!🔥🔥🔥Great Don’t Take Me Alive solo!!!
Thanks Rick! I appreciate it !
Tim & Rick together…..
Like Doublemint gum…
Twice the pleasure.
You guys may truly never know how much we appreciate you. How much you have given us as players and just plain old fans of music… All kinds. We are better for having you both. A very heartfelt thanks…. I would imagine here I’m speaking for many many of us. Stay safe, healthy and happy guys.
🎸🎼🤠
Too bad he didn’t have the P90 version handy Rick, so we could check out the difference😉.
It’s😎, it’s very likable either way..👍
Absolutely awesome Tim, that’s one of my favourite Steely Dan tracks and I loved your breakdown. And you’re right, The Royal Scam is a great album
Mega ditto! That was illuminating. I love those stab chords, they are almost like musical humor.
I can't overstate how helpful videos like this are, when most viewers can't afford the $7k guitar but Tim shows us how close we can get to that sound for a fraction of the cost. Plus we get to watch him shift from Bryan Adams, to Aerosmith, to Van Halen then Steely Dan, all so smoothly. 🙂
Most viewers can afford it but do we need it
Don't forget Fleetwood Mac-Oh Well
Dude could make a Estaban guitar sound like a million dollars. Only problem is these guys are too good, which sometimes translates to “sterile” sounding. Dude is a beast tho.
Guitar Garden Firefly for $200. Their 338 is a 335 clone with stainless steel ball end frets. Smooth.
I know a guy that's a great jazz player that's appeared on a lot of jazz recordings and sessions as well as a session player on a lot of pop records and few tours. For the first ten years of his 'professional' career he just used a stock 90s Epiphone Sheraton on everything and some junky thing as a backup. No one cared. No one said, ''Why aren't you playing a top-shelf Gibson?'
High end guitars are beautiful works of art and there's a romance to owning a great US model. But audiences and clients couldn't care less.
Loved your demo Tim, not only because of the wonderful playing and tone but to have them compared side by side. Same songs, solos etc. really helped show how similar the two guitars are. Thanks as always!
Tim, everything you played today grabbed me! Choice of pieces, tones, feel…
What an entertaining, joyful video.
Thanks mate.
Nice to see you enjoyed when playing the "Run to you" riff. Great sounding riff and fun to play 🎉
Fascinated to watch this! Thanks for the comparison video Tim!!!
I love the breakdown on the comparison. It's great to hear them played back to back. This was a great video!
Your playing is always amazing but DAMN! That intro to Don’t Take Me Alive is one of my all time favorites and you NAILED IT!
Wow, that 'Don't Take Me Alive' solo is BUTTERY. Once again, your touch is spectacular throughout. I'm a lefty, so the Sire Larry Carlton series is definitely in my sights.
This lesson on Don’t Take Me Alive is brilliant. Thank you so much for your content.
BROUGHT THE RIFFS! Loved hearing that guitar with those lovely tunes! Thanks for this whole episode, it was a delight.
Wow that guitar sounds amazing! And I really like how you examine all characteristics too!
Loved the "Run To You" riff inclusion! BA is underrated, and sounds killer on that Sire
Sounded great as always Tim. I love your videos, nice pace, easy to follow and you look to have so much fun ... liking the £700 guitar too 👌
Very impressed with the Sire, and even more impressed with your skill and knowledge! Thank you for the review, just what I was looking for!
Had the pleasure of seeing Larry on tour - did the show with his H7. If one closes one’s eyes and listens… it’s Larry. And, the tone is perfect. The Sire line seems to be a great value. Great playing, Tim👏😁!
What an incredible musician you are Tim.
It's not just your fabulous ability, it's your knowledge and insight.
Always a pleasure watching your videos.
And Larry plays his model. He did at The Baked Potato for his son Travis's 40th birthday gig. I was arm-length away on the side of the stage and Larry turned to me, pointed at the guitar, proudly smiled and said "$700 guitar". I knew because mine had arrived a week earlier. I love it.
I don't believe this happened
@@jerbear7952 If you've ever seen a show there, it's barely larger than a living room. The stage is small and the audience is right there. Larry was stage right, next to a row of seats behind a bench table where I sat. And his model guitar by Sire is really well-built.
Tim, the biggest value of this posting is the Don't Take me alive guitar lesson, along with the Josie intro.
Let me offer an expression of gratitude for showing your fingering positions. I have Josie figured out for the most part, but watching you play it gave me the clarity I'd hoped to find after hours of trying to get it right.
Thank you.......
Your exuberance and perfect command of the instrument makes me fall in love with playing that old thing myself again. And the Sire sounds, looks and expectably plays phenomenal! Thanks so much! (And I sure as heck entered the contest :-) )
What a very good side by side comparison..looks and sounds great for the price point.I admire anyone who can copy someone soli note for note etc.Talent , patience is a virtue. Thank you for this post greatly appreciated 🙏.
Great video Tim. I just watched Larry Carlton do a video on this guitar and his T style also from Sire yesterday so this demo was so timely. I have to admit Don’t Take Me Alive has always blown my mind from the tone to feel and the charismatic construction of the guitar parts it’s a masterpiece. You’ve done an amazing job of recreating it. Thank you for the in-depth review - I am seriously considering buying one and this was very helpful.
thanks so much for the kind words I appreciate it
Great video and review Tim! I always loved the guitar on Don't Take Me Alive and seeing you play has me wanting to going back and learn it. Thanks for the inspiration! I also like the Larry Carlton's recent tone and playing, just amazing. I'll need to head to GuitarCenter and check out this guitar, never actually heard of Sire before.
Tim, I could listen to you play all day long! You really do have quite the gift! Thanks for sharing!
Your playing helps the guitars shine very significantly, Tim... You're such a fine player.
I agree Tim. My ES335 was about $3500. I build guitars in a small shop at home. From what I can tell, the Gibson and Sire are built the same way. 3 layer, cross grain pressed top and back with a center block. The wood on the Gibson, and maybe part of the process is what results in the lighter weight. Sire does an excellent job on the neck and frets!! For about $400 you could change the pups, wiring, pots, switch and jack. That would make it very hard to tell the difference in a blind test! This is the first off shore guitar I've ever said this about! Peace.. --gary
@@simpsimpson5175yep have a Tokai it’s incredible and quality far better than the gibson
@@petehreid1 So true! I swapped out the electronics of my Love Rock with 50's wiring and Lindy Fralin pure P.A.F.s - it's a Gibson killer!
Eastmans are great guitars too.
@@ahhoiboy A local shop here is an outlet for Eastman 'seconds' (blems), pretty good deals. I'll post the link if you want it? And Tim allows it? --gary
While extremely close, I could pick the Gibson blindfolded anytime, it has a kind of airiness and compression that the Sire doesn't match with the current configuration. What pickups and electronics in your opinion (Gibson '57 with 50s wiring, orange drops etc. ) should achieve that, or is it also a matter of wood/construction difference?
Tim! You're the best! Great playing. Great analysis! 👍🏾🎸
OMG! That lesson is so cool! Thank you man! Much appreciated.
I just bought the Sire H7 used for $600. Still had the plastic on the pickguard. Looks and sounds awesome.
Cost is what you pay, value is what you get. Where those meet is up to you. Great video and that seems like a quality instrument.
Your demos are a guitar master class! Thank you. Have this Sire guitar arriving tomorrow. Looking forward to trying some of these riffs. Thanks again
The H7 is great. Had to do a set up and fret dress but that is normal for a lower price instrument. Very well put together and pickups are awesome. Neck feels great. Very much like a late 60s 335. I lucked out and got a fairly light one at 8.2 lbs. which is not too bad for 335. Lighter than my Les Paul. All in all a keeper.
That was fun just watching you play Tim! Thanks for the comparison too!
As a lifelong Gibson 355 player... I was curious to see this guitar comparison... which was an excellent presentation. However I was far more impressed by Tim's guitar playing and brilliant execution of every tune he played. Steely Dan is extremely advanced and complex music to cut on guitar...and Tim landed it note-for note... perfectly executed! BRAVO! I lost interest in which guitar you were playing and became entranced in your playing. Honestly if I were blindfolded I could not tell the difference between guitars. Both instruments sounded great...but the player is what impressed me most!
So true….and virtually identical tone
Every Tim Pierce video is like that. I don't really care what guitar he's playing because he makes them all sound amazing. Gives credence to the old saying that the tone is in the fingers.
_ From this, I can say you haven't listened to straightforward jazz guitar, which Carlton cannot really play, though he's a great fusion guitarist with fantastic touch (tone making).
355 or 335? Both are great guitars, but I know how many times I've "fat-fingered" 355 for some reason. Fun fact, guys like Larry Carlton and Skunk Baxter often made their own leads, and auditioned with them to get the gig. Baxter's "Peg" solo is a great example. Aaaaand... I bet you already know that 🤷♂🙂
@@MattyK-USA Hi Matty... Yes 355 is correct. At one time in the 1960's it was Gibson's "Top of the line" semi-hollowbody as shown in their catalog. Mine was a 1966 Cherry Red with the Stereo Varitone and Bigsby tailpiece option. I traded my 345 and $500 for it back in the late 60's when I saw it hanging up (used) at Alex's Music Store on 48th St. in New York City. I had that 355 from the late 60's until around 2012. I loved that 355 but when I began studying Jazz the neck at the nut was too thin (under 1 11/16") so I switched over to a 1988 Natural Finish Gibson L4 that I loved. For the record I owned • Sears Silvertone Guitar (amp in the case) balck with sparkle • 60"s Fender Mustang (daphne blue) • Gibson 330 (Cherry Red) • Gibson Goldtop Les Paul • Gibson 340 (Cherry Red) • Gibson 345 (Cherry Red) • Gibson 355 (Cherry Red) • 1988 Gibson L4 (Natural) and a back-up Gibson 2010 L4 (Sunburst), Except for the L4... I never owned more than one guitar at a time.
Yes its amazing how good the lower end guitars are these days (compared to when I first started playing). You can still find a few dogs in the batch but most sellers have free return policies if you don't like them. The biggest thing with the lower priced guitars is having to do the setups and adjustments yourself. Thats one way they tend to cut the pricing too (which isn't an issue if you've built up your tool collection).
Just bought that exact same guitar 6 months ago for my first semi-hollow. Absolutely love it. Seriously looking at grabbing one of the Les Paul models too. Thanks for what you do Tim!
Enjoyed this video. That Sire is a beauty. Your playing is a joy to hear. thanks for this demonstration.
great riff selection!😊
Incredible playing as always, Tim! I got an H7 in cherry sunburst 1 year ago and it’s been my favorite non PRS in my arsenal. I’ve never bonded with a real 335 for whatever reason, but the pickups and feel are perfect to me.
More than anything, the fact that Larry now plays an H7 in live settings over his famous vintage 335 says volumes about his confidence in their quality and adherence to his high standards.
Also it shows that he is unwilling to subject the vintage 335 to the rigors of touring, or the chance of theft.
Larry Could probably play a Japanese guitar that floated to California like driftwood for five weeks…. dry it out, wipe the salt off it, take the seaweed out of the F holes and scorch another masterpiece solo.
As I write this, I’m listening to talk radio and what comes on? Bumper music Steely Dan Bodhisattva lol. Skunk? Denny Dias? It’s early stuff…🎼🎸
Great solo and a great lesson on it! Thanks, Tim. Love my Larry Carlton, too.
Wonderful demo/presentation! Love the guitar! Sounds great, but everything you do does! ha! Great feel on the song dude! Thanks!!
The H7 was such a nice surprise, particularly when I ran it thru Fender amps, it was sooo worth the almost year long wait (I ordered it during COVID) I ended up using it for the lions share of the leads on my last album "Highway Cruiser". Larry Carlton was always a hero to me and this was a must try guitar, so I am glad (at least in this) I was patient!
Sire's are nice guitars, but it's the hands of The Master that bring it to life. Tim is certainly one of a kind! Great video.
The Sire does sound fine but no match for the Gibson 🤔
Apparently Tim Pierce and Larry Carlton disagree.
Beautiful playing Tim. You make it look so easy.
Really excellent review and playing, of course! Thanks Tim
The sound of Cream's Badge is a heart melter for me. When the rotary sound kicks in I'm over the moon every time.
That may be my favorite of theirs.
My ringtone starts during the bridge at the moment that wonderfully, i call it "greasy tone" since i was kid, kicks in. Glorious!
Supposedly Harrison liked it so much he took the new custom pedal that controlled the Leslie home after the session. Clapton thought he lost it but saw it again during the All Things Must Pass session.
They shared so many things😂
@@shawnmcvey7789 I imagine George felt somewhat entitled at that point... ;)
All spot on with my emotions with Badge, thanks for that moment of clarity.
Great review Tim! I have four of the Sire line, H7V, L7, and two L7V's with P-90 pickups that sound amazing! I also own custom shop Gibson guitars, and the quality of the Sire guitars is extraordinary for the price . You should check out the Sire guitars with P-90's, simply amazing crystal bell like tone quality. Highly recommended! Cheers! 👍
Always loved Steely Dan's records. Another cracking tutorial Tim. Cheers from Oz.
I always love your enthusiasm! Thanks for always making me smile! 😇🙏🏻🎸❤️
You are not just one of the finest guitarists ever, you are just such a nice guy. Your aura radiates along with your enthusiasm to share. Bless you, Brother. Great work!
I will absolutely second that comment.
Absolutely spine tingling. Congrats to my man Bobby's Backing Tracks for the major and well deserved plug!!
Aww (heart of gold) Frank Goodman
I just love listening to your play. You seem so versatile and knowledgeable. I started playing when I was 9 but unfortunately quit when I got to High School for football. I've been back at it for the past four years. It just seems that there is so much to learn and so little time to do it. I'm 67 now.
hey Tim, new subscriber here, all the way down from Chile. Great videos and what I appreciate the most is how down to earth you are. Keep them coming!
Sire is killing it. Love my V7 bass.
Thanks Tim. Great looking Guitar. Your ability to make an inexpensive guitar sound great with your clean licks and solo was appreciated.
Your one of the best session players.
Nice work!
Thank you for making this. ❤
The entire Sire lineup is really killing it as far as vintage-style designs in their price range. I already have a D'Angelico that fills my 335-style role, but I've got an L7 for my LP and a V3P 5-string to cover my Jazz bass stuff.
What danegelico
@@uv77mc85 You don't know what the hell you are talking about.
@@uv77mc85 I haven't played one of their guitars yet, but I can speak from experience when I say that their basses are very good. I couldn't find any flaws with them, except that maybe the pickups were a bit bright. But that's just preference, a lot of people like that more than the vintage thud that I prefer.
@@uv77mc85 You think I'm getting paid to push them with my like 50 subscribers and 0 videos about them? 😂😂😂
@@andycodd8096 Premier DC. Stock tuners were junk but once I swapped those out it's an excellent guitar.
This review is my favorite so far!! Great work!!
Thanks for this vid and all you do. It was fun!
As an owner of 3 Sire basses, I fully endorse these guys. They're so nice to play. I had bought them with the intention of swapping out the pickups and electronics (because, ya know, cheap). After playing and opening up the covers, I realized I didn't need to. Really enjoyed hearing it from a guitarists perspective as well!
Especially with the active models you have such a huge range of sounds that I don't know what I could improve with different PUs.
@@Fastvoice 100% agreed
Had the money for a MIM jazz bass but bought the Sire V5 instead and could not be happier with my choice. Bought it over a fender by choice when I could have had a fender because I just could not see where the difference in price was other than the headstock logo.
There *is* a gap, but nothing a pickup swap and some EQ tweaks couldn’t solve.
I’ve been really interested in the Sire stuff. Also those Sterling Cutlasses sound shockingly good. We’re living in a golden age of budget friendly guitars!
Such a pleasure to,watch and enjoy your playing. So glad you also did play Dream On by Aerosmith. That guitar intro is so unique and immediately identifiable. When you solo on Don‘t take me Alive, it sounds 100% like Larry played it. I got to see Larry Carlton live in NYC in the 90‘s. Mark O‘Connor came in as well to listen. His playing was perfect and i stayed for the second show as well. So when you got to see Larry showing up to play that show with Steely Dan you must have been equally excited as i was back then. Greetings from Germany
Wow, what a delightful in-depth view. Thank you so much I too am a huge Larry Carlton fan. I purchased his Les Paul a few months ago and of course had to do a bunch of Larry Carlton covers. Not too many covers of this guy, I'm not sure why? He's just truly remarkable and you sir are a very tasteful player yourself again thanks so much
The guitars are pretty close in tone with the Gibson being smoother and the Sire is noticably brighter in the treble region but not harsh,to me it's enough to cut through. Excellent playing and video 👍🎸
uff... such great tones. you are awesome tim
Mateus, thank you so much! you are an inspiration to all of us :)
thanks for the thorough and helpful review!
I love watching u play my friend..its how guitar was intended to be played..with passion..feeling every note..and most of all..just having fun
Can’t believe I stopped watching a Sire video to watch Tim’s Sire video. Guess I’m destined to buy one ha
I’d love to see this same type of comparison done between an Eastman semi-hollow guitar and a Gibson 335. Another great guitar being made overseas. Cheers! 😊
Much more fair comparison
This is a sponsored video by sweet water. This is basically an add. The comparisin would only happen if Eastman sent him a guitar.
I just put down my identical H7 after jamming some blues, then this popped up! Great guitar. Love the vids as always.
Tim, good video and really nice job on the "Jamie's Cryin' riff!!
I love watching Tim play the guitar, he's obviously having so much fun and often looks like he's in ecstasy. He's a great player and so knowledgeable.
"The bridge is way cool. I'm going in!" 🤣
I hate watching Tim play the guitar because he’s everything I ever wanted to be and never came close.
Great comparison. Sire is now on my radar. Most likely going to add one to my collection. ✌️
Fun Fact: ‘Reelin’ In The Years’ is Jimmy Page’s favorite solo.
Tim, you are one amazing guitar player. Thanks for the treat. I love Larry and Steely Dan.
Best Sire H7 review and demo all over UA-cam. Thank you. Great playing too... 😊
I played one at Sweetwater last month and was very impressed. My buddy has the same Bonomassa as you, Tim so I 100 percent agree with your assessment.
I think the difference was more noticeable with more gain, as you said its smoother in the top end. But nothing wrong with the Sire
Great vid Tim 👌...I own one of these. Great guitar & seriously good value. Mine came with some setup issues and the nut wasn't cut correctly. Apart from that - very happy with my H7 ✌️
I love coming to these channels to appreciate music and instruments deeper!
I used to collect vintage guitars. These cheap guitars today are amazing! I just got an Xaviere 335 type guitar for about $350 (!) which sounds and plays terrific! I don’t know how they do it. If money is no object, of course the Gibson 335 is better, but for the money, these cheap guitars are just incredible. Thanks for the comparison!
Ha! Ten minutes ago, I was noodling the Steely Dan opener as well as 'Oh Well'! ...Though I often play the 'Rockets version of 'Oh Well'.
Yes! The Rockets! I saw them in Birmingham, Alabama and they rocked!!! They blew the roof off the arena when they did "Oh Well", but the real killer was an amazing cover of The Beatles "Dear Prudence", after all these years I still remember how AMAZING it was!!!!
@@michaelleary8694 Saw them warming up Bob Seger (Against the Wind). Had third row, center seats. I didn't buy a Bob Seger shirt, I got a Rockets shirt! Great show and back then, as little as I knew of the Beatles (I was 16), I recall that too. The didn't get much traction for as good as there were.
What a great video. Thank you for doing this comparison! You’ve made a believer out of me. I’d like to get my hands on this Sire model.
My son has my 1999 Gibson 335 with a beautiful flame top. He is beginning his final year in grad school in Jazz Guitar Performance. It blessed my soul to see him play Spiral on it in his recent recital. Having said that I missed my 335 and purchased an H7. I love the sounds, look, and feel of the H7. It covers all the bases I was missing. Thanks for your great review and the chills you gave me hearing Don’t Take Me Alive! I hope I win the H7. I will give it to my son and get my Gibson back!
Those are great guitars for the money! I purchased the Larry Carlton T7 for $600.00. I love the rolled frets and roasted maple neck.
Rolled and roasted for 600 is pretty good.
I agree with your summary, Tim. Sire definitively does the semi hollow thing with its own nice character, punching above its price point. The Gibson had more nuance and wood tone warmth.
100%
I just bought one of these and new to electric as per se. Amazing how I want to and can and do make different expressions and sounds ... didn't know this would happen.. thanks for the re-view. I'd sure like a super detail of the pickup settings. I noticed too the switch crackles some .. but I'll have to contact the factory.... I ordered it directly from them.
The way you play "Run To You" just sounds so goooood. All the little things combined sound like heaven to my ears
I was able to see Steely Dan live well many moons ago. You could literally have dropped the needle on the album and would not have been able to tell the difference in their playing. They were just that good live. One of my favorite concerts I went to.
I saw them last year. Obviously Walter is gone but it was an amazing show. I think they had 5 guitarists, all great.
The first time I saw them Walter called out because he went to the hospital the night before. A few days later he passed away 😭 Sad he didn’t make it but Larry Carlton took his spot and of course he sounded amazing
I already own a Sire S7 but your demo of the H7 is making me reeeeeally want one.
Everything you play is so tasteful and record-ready. It's crazy. Years of experience on display in every video. I've always wanted a 335 but the prices and plethora of options has overwhelmed me. Will check out the Sire and some 2k varieties.
These Sire guitars really are amazing. Seems like prices are going to have to go up eventually. Supply and demand... Great playing as usual Tim. You rock!
I think the prices are going to go down now that people realize that 7k...or even 2k buys them a headstock logo and zero extra tone.
I hope Sire prices dont go up. Then they wont be accessible to many players.
Both guitars sound very nice. Money wise the $700 dollar guitar is a great bargin😊
@@uv77mc85 Appreciate the info. I wasn’t considering buying it. Sitting here now with one of my PRS guitars in my lap as I type. I’ve got all the guitars I need but human nature does at times make me want to get another guitar 😂😂😂
The tip for the backing track website was helpful:)
There are so many affordable guitars these days that really blow me away quality wise for the money but in his day Eric Clapton could make a Squire sound like a $10,000 guitar if you catch my drift.
If I were in a room with these two and had the choice of which one to play I'm playing the Gibson. I'm not spending $7,000 on one just because Bonamassa's name is on it but I'd be okay with dropping around $3k on one in the used market.
I'm sure there's nothing wrong with the $700 guitar but resale value and quality differences that I've grown accustomed to would make me save for the Gibson.
Any brand that has Larry Carlton and Marcus Miller approving their guitars has got to be worth looking at, the Sire basses are incredible value too.
I bought this guitar for my son in the faded red top. The flamed top is really nice are the rounded shoulders on the neck, very nice tone through a peavey classic 30. Great review!
Thank you for your experience, expertise and candour. Very instructive to this novice.
My Epiphone Gibson Inspired By 335 is an awesome cheaper version too. It’s crazy how good some of these cheaper options are.
Completely agree...and I have had an es-175 for 40 years. My Epiphone 335 IBG is every bit as nice as my Gibson, although very different.
I can't put it down...
I actually prefered the sound of the sire. Very interesting. I've played the sire strat and was really impressed with it. Carlton wouldn't put his name to junk!
Well, it looks like he has.
Incredible playing and really useful comparison from an amasing musician. Thanks man.
