    We have something similar with ham, chicken, hard boiled eggs or canned tuna. Those are made with the meat, fish or eggs finely minced and mixed with a little mayonnaise and sweet pickle relish, onions, perhaps some finely minced celery and sometimes a little yellow mustard. Sometimes the ham salad is made with finely chopped hard boiled eggs in it as well. Egg salad usually has chopped green onions . All are served in between buttered bread, often with lettuce in the sandwich. These kinds of lunch sandwiches were very popular at diners where we used to sit at the lunch counters such as Woolworth's.

    Shirani, this Spam sandwich is Spamtastic. As a Minnesota resident, I like Spam. It's no secret that I'm blown out of the water by this fine recipe. Especially when you add onions & peppers. Personally, I'd add onions, garlic & ALL the peppers! But, that's just me. Shirani, you perfected this recipe to a science! 🔥

    In America we call that a ham salad sandwich. Although I've never seen it made with SPAM. What a great idea! Never thought about onions and bell peppers in it as well. If you have pickle relish, I highly recommend that. Also toast the bread. YUM!

    My late Mom made Spam spread almost identical to yours except instead of bell peppers, she used chopped celery and either yellow, red, or green onions, whatever was on hand. My family is from the Caribbean and this is very similar to a Spam salad sandwich my mom sometimes makes. She generally would make it when we'd take a road trip to see family about 8 hours away. She'd prepare them the night before and we'd eat the sandwiches at the halfway point.

    The Belize version of a wake sounds like an Irish wake.
    You don't need to add salt because the Spam is plenty salty enough.
    My mom used to buy bologna in big chunks (not sliced in a package). She would then have the butcher grind it up like hamburger. She would then mix the ground bologna with mayonnaise, pickle relish, etc. to make a bologna salad for sandwiches.

    In USA this is basically a ham salad type sandwich. You can substitute celery in place of green pepper as well. Looks good...I will try it. TY

    Have made it many times through the years as child and adult. Incidentally am writing from Alaska, interesting that we eat the same sandwiches though so far apart both in country and culture, so many of us appreciate a good spam sandwich. Also have had this at get together, and potlucks, etc.

    It is basically "deviled ham" . Some use Pickle relish for a sweeter taste. Sour cream can be substituted for mayonnaise.. Yields very similar results.

    I lived in Hawaii in the 1950's and us kids had spam sandwiches made of thinly cut SPAM on white bread with yellow mustard, and potato chips and fruit cocktail on the side. Also worthy of note is the fact that, depending on how you cooked it, SPAM would taste like ham or bacon - at least to me.

    • @CookingwithShirani

      My husband was raised in Oklahoma and he said he remembers eating it like that too, fried with yellow mustard and bread. Mmmm it does taste like bacon 😊

      Jack Bartlett - i have not had spam since i was a kid (1970's), until recently. sliced thin and cooked crispy. you are right, it taste a lot like "bacon." SLT sandwich - spam, lettuce, tomato w/mayo on bread.

  • @Losttoanyreason
    @Losttoanyreason 2 роки тому +2

    I like SPAM, fried and in a sandwich or in a Asian style stir fry. Never thought of making ham salad using SPAM . I guess because its so salty but I'm guessing the onions and peppers added would absorb some of that salt mediating that. Definitely going to have to try this.
    The only time I've ever seen a wake in the US is on TV or in a movie and that always seems to be anecdotally from TV and movies to more an Italian or Irish Catholic tradition of the Yankee north . It was likely quite common when we still prepared the bodies for burial at home and the people came by to visit and pay their condolences. These days however in the US, funeral homes generally come for the body to prep it for burial and visitation is held at the funeral parlor the day before the funeral. Even though we don't have wakes in the South that I know of, the family's church usually prepares a meal for the family which is either served them at the church community center or their home. That way the family can concentrate on grieving not having to cook.

    • @CookingwithShirani
      @CookingwithShirani  2 роки тому

      Yes it doesn't taste salty when it's prepared this way. I love it fried too 😊. Thank you for taking the time out to write all that information for me. I appreciate you doing that. I learned a lot ❤
