23:10 poor dad has gotten trichomonias in his eye. Common in house finches. And he keeps going even though he’s not feeling well at all. That’s why you don’t see him around all the way to the end of the video unfortunately. They are some really great parent finches!
Lovely video. I'm so glad you set up a camera and left it. I just had a similar situation, with finches over my door, but didn't dare intrude for fear of disrupting them. Still, I could hear each time the babies were fed-- they made such a racket! LOL! But it was a beautiful sound. But they get big SO FAST-- just 8-9 days later, I happened to be out on the porch and looked up to see 6 finches, with the babies testing their wings, fluttering all over. I didn't dare move. Within the next day or so, they were all gone... now I just need to clean the nest.

Birds have multiple clutches of chicks a season...there’s no way they can discern which is weaker etc...it’s really nature....some are weak and don’t survive...some are strong and then get eaten by other birds or predators etc....it makes more sense the feeding is randomly distributed or just random...there’s no thought in the bird other than feeding the chicks.
