- Picking up a few more birds by birding a little closer to home. As part of the 300 Bird Challenge, we want to see 300 different species of bird before the end of the year.
We visit Glen Major forest in Uxbirdge, Ontario after my friend Jason tells us about a Golden-winged Warbler sighting a few days earlier. We go to see if we can find the bird - a lifer.

Help :)
Everyone is after donations these days, eh? I know, I know. Even when you visit the store.
We appreciate that times are tough, but ultimately, this channel is a loss making. We only get $5-10 per video from adverts. If you'd like to help us out, donations will help us to release more content because it means we can get away more often and it will help the channel to branch out and cover more. In the future, we'd like to make more videos than we are currently able to.
If you'd like the help out, you can PayPal a donation to us at hi@brithikesontario.com or you can
"Buy us a coffee" here: buymeacoffee.c... where we may provide some bonus content in the future if people use it.

Jason Lush is a long-time avid birder from Durham region. We met at Algonquin Park earlier this year. He would like everyone to know that he is in the Top 20 eBirders for Durham Region for 2024.

Predators know the stakes; every hunt is a fight for existence.
That was definitely a broad-winged hawk. I enjoyed the video.
Great, thanks!
I think that was good for Broad winged Hawk. I wouldn’t call that a belly band like on a red tailed. It sure did look like it was having a rough time though!
Yeah, I agree about it not really being a belly band, having watched my own finalised video back. Always looks clearer on a big screen! Thanks for the feedback, appreciated.
Incredible views of the golden winged warbler! Such a beautiful species. It's so wonderful to see the eastern warbler species as a westerner!
Thanks Shayna. Defintely think The Great Lakes is a top place to be when it comes to bird migration. Not just the amount and variety of birds, but the vibrant colours, too. Thanks for watching. You should come out this way sometime 🧐🧐🧐🐦🐦🐦
@BritHikesOntario that might be in the cards in the next couple years! Let me know if you guys are ever heading west!
Very nice throughout here well done
See you again all the best Happy Weekend 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I loved watching, well done again! 🐦⬛
Thank you!
Good morning to you from Hong Kong 🇭🇰 SAR. We have a similar coloured-bird, but it’s called a Scarlet Minivet. It is a common resident breeding bird in forests and well-wooded habitat including gardens, especially in hilly country.
Thanks Mark, looks like a cool bird.
You are such a good story teller i wouldnt be surprised if non birders whatched your videos just for the story 😇
Really appreciate that comment, thanks 😊
No carpal bar rules out Red-tailed. You have a Broad-winged Hawk for sure.
Hey Cliff, thanks for that. Appreciate the tip and the lingo 👍
Incredible adventure! That Golden-winged Warbler was absolutely stunning! Amazing to see you almost reach your goal!
Thanks bud. Doing alright but 40-50 birds in 4 months with the majority of easy ones already seen (and many heading south), I think it will still be tight unless we are able to travel a bit more.
I look forward to your videos very much, viewing them from the UK. Very impressed with the Canadian warblers.
Thank you David, appreciate that. Trying to get out some more before the warblers leave!
Well done on the Golden-winged Warbler, I dipped on a couple during my May trip from the UK. I will be back however with the plan to go to Carden Alvar next time.
I can’t believe that there was a male Golden-winged Warbler in the UK, wintering in a Sainsbury’s car park in the 1980’s! Unfortunately I wasn’t twitching back then!
Have you been to Carden Alvar before? Great spot. I'd recommend early summer as the best time (Juneish, depending on the weather). We were just there briefly on the way back from somewhere else (next video) but it's definitely past its best by August.
@@BritHikesOntario No not been before and we were considering early June on our next trip. Unfortunately need to wait until 2026
Thanks so much for sharing another wonderful video like always 🐦♥️🤗
Thank you Miguel!
Nice video, i like when you include plants and butterflies
Thank you. Always try to include other things we see 😊
Another great video guys! Another beautiful warbler - isn’t nature grand!
Thanks Tracy, was a fun one to see. Hoping we can find a couple more... Canada and Hooded... before they move on 😊
Great video! That golden-winged warbler was beautiful! I've only seen one of them myself last year at Hillman Marsh.
Thanks Hayden
In your neck of the woods this weekend. Rondeau, maybe as far as Hillman.
Such a Kool video and beautiful birds I watched twice 🤗👍
Thanks Miguel. Did you subscribe twice? 😂😉
Only joking. Thanks for your support 👍
You guys finally made it to Secord Forest 😊
It’s quite the pet cemetery, I took the time to read most of the markers on my visit there.
Good video I enjoyed this one.
Thanks Rick, yeah it's quite large and that's an elaborate dog statue!
Nice video! I hike and photograph birds in Glen major all the time. A very good spot and nice find i
Of the Golden wing
Thanks, I wasn't necessarily expecting it to be as good as it was around that area. The birdsong was nonstop 😊
I love the call of the black capped chickadee 😊 6 stages to the cycle of that there caterpillar creature, had no idea there could be so many. Great video. Nice to see you out and about and sharing your experiences so beautifully
Thank you, Mrs 😊
Have to do a Day In The Life of your garden goblin'ing one day 😂
Golden Winged Warbler... I think, that might just be my all time favourite bird!!! Congrats on the new lifers.
Thanks, glad you liked it. It's been a target for us for a while. I think Townsend's is probably up there for me now... but as a West Coast bird, it'll have to wait a while.
I missed the golden wing this year at Tawas, again..I was there but missed it by seconds. I will be at sax-zim bog in Dec. Hoping to get those winter bird's I missed last winter. I also will take the Kirkland Warbler tour in the spring next year. Glad you found a couple of lifers and real close to your target goal.
We are hoping to make a Kirtland video mext year. And funnily enough, we are also hitting Sax-zim Bog in December. Hoping it's not too early, depending on weather this winter.
Nice video that reminded me those species I would see only in the southern part of Quebec, close to the US border.
Thank you, glad it gave you some memories 😊
That golden-winged warbler was a stunner indeed -- no exaggeration -- and then seeing a scarlet tanager makes it a great day. To me, not seeing a bear on your walk is good luck.
Haha. I haven't seen a bear or a moose for about 3 years and have a hankering to see one 😆
😊👍🌲🌲🦅🌳
Not an alder tree. It's a cottonwood. Sorry, Alder Flycatcher
Haha. I need to get way better at plants and trees, definitely a blind spot. I was (un)reliably informed it was an alder tree, but I bow to your almost certainly greater knowledge.
Thankfully we got very good ID on the bird call.
Thanks for the feedback 👍
