YES, in the book, it clearly states that Leafy was flying. That is her perspective. Both the book and the movie are masterpieces.
Is the book as dark?
AS THE BOOK IS HORROR
Where does the believe stem from that chickens cannot fly...They are no hawks but they still can.
@@vHindenburg “flying” by her soul is gliding with the sky
@@vHindenburg it's because there's a stereotype that they're "too fat and stupid". People thing the same for turkey and peacock.
The ending for the western one is a prime example of how western movies have a obsession with having a "happy ending" despite it coming at the cost of hurting the story
Yet I've seen the English version and I remember the ending being in it??? Until now it's the only bit I remember out of the whole thing outside of the race.
Guess I'll go and watch the original.
The problem is censorship. I want corporations to stop trying to retcon reality. If you don't think it's acceptable for children, don't show it to children. Don't amputate it.
Sucks because the original ending IS happy imo, it's not dark for the sake of having a dark ending, it's dark in a beautiful way
To be honest I kinda hate the happy ending but I don't hate tragic ones just don't over do it but but I I wish I could see a movie/TV show that shows the highs and lows of a life or say something like an insane narrator that hides it well and is untrustworthy but it is hard to tell what is made up and all that jazz
Westerns can't handle the truth.
The weasel babys part she sound so desperate in the original Korean it is heartbreaking.
honestly thought, like you can feel the pain. in the dub it's just kinda awkward how the mouth and facial expressions convay and whole different tone compared to te dub voice.
@@prehistoricorchid3455 As a russian, i can tell she still sounded really emotional in our dub, but a bit rougher in the voice.
Also, i'm glad it was translated straight from the korean original since sometimes our people just translate the english dub. And it didn't even got censored or cut. Blessing X)

Cut the whole ending away!? Excuse me but what the heck! That is one of the most emotional scenes in the whole movie. That's like deleting the Mufasa's death from the Lion King.
This is even more sad than mufasa death in my opinion, back then when i was a kid mufasa death didnt really broke my heart, yeah its little bit touching but not as sad as toy story 3 ending and even "9" ending

Hi can you please do the movie wolf house it is very disturbing and creepy
It's Korea after all
Actually there’s a Korean actor who has his hair styled like this who plays a lot of cool and sort of “I’m so done with everyone’s sh** I need to retire” type of characters. He’s in a lot of shows and I guess that look became associated with dark and cool characters.
Lmao i thought I'm the only one who thought so XD
@R P I literally don’t remember his name but I’m glad you know who I’m referring to. All I remember is he’s in a lot of Korean dramas.
I love how the Weasel is a compassionate mother who just wants to feed her babies
Shes only evil to those that don't know the full story
She's still partly evil as she only eats live prey
exactly, like he said, the weasel wasn;t evil, just wanted to nurture her kids. She had to eat meat in order to provide for her babies
@@suvonhernandez843
Not exactly, they have no choice but to eat living beings as they are carnivores, their digestive tract cannot handle plant matter and there would be a digestive blockage if they even tried. There's a difference between torturing living things when it isn't necessary and torturing living things so your own species can thrive and keep existing. In nature it is all about balance, without carnivores there would hardly any plants and smaller animals wouldn't have shelter or places to sleep for the night, however if there are too many carnivores then the plants will over grow, causing many fires. So, the weasels aren't villains, they are just doing what nature and evolution intended for them in the food chain.
@@quillmorningstar8713 okay but what about the pile of perfectly good chicken corpses
The idea that Leafy’s ghost is looking over her son after sacrificing herself for the weasel’s babies made me cry

The weasel, One Eye's, voice actress really brought the emotion and panic when Leafie was about to step on One Eye's babies. This is a sad and bittersweet plot twist that she's only a mother trying to feed her young. I love that the movie did that.
as a battery hen leafie wouldn't have lived too long anyways. they're unfortunately bred for production, not health, and even rescued battery hens are going to develop major health problems. so, she lived a good life and helped another mother take care of her children, that's a good end to her arc.
If they're rescued early enough in their lifespan and are kept on a more natural lay schedule using only natural light to regulate their cycle they can live fairly long lives, but they definitely are never going to be as fit and healthy as a heritage hen.
If I had to guess, Leafie is probably based roughly on a brown leghorn. The hens have a yellowish head/neck, dark brown body, and somewhat lighter underfluff. The most common breed of egg hen (at least in my part of the world) is a white leghorn and brown leghorn productivity is negligibly different from the solid variety so it would make sense.
Whoa, Jesus.
Like being loaded on ass loads of antibiotics all the time means her immune system is probably garbage
if leafie was a cornish/broiler hen that would definitely be the case, as they were specifically bred to grow as fast as possible so if they aren't killed anyway they just grow so large to the point of either dying from organ failure bc of being so unnaturally large in such a short amount of time or they become crippled at simply their sheer weight and size they are forced to grow into. i honestly think these types of chickens shouldn't even exist, they were literally just bred to suffer
I have a friend who cares for rescued battery hens. Sadly, they never last longer than six months or so; but she always does her best to give them a comfortable life.
I understand the need for fast production, but there's got to be a way to get plenty of eggs without being cruel to the hens.
The final scene is definitely meant to be from the POV of Leafie's spirit. In the books Leafie has an internal dialogue where she painlessly die, and suddenly sees everything from the sky, as if she's flying like greenie
He said that in the video...

Here. Have some medal.
Cute looking film that gets darker and brutal with a sad ending? Well sounds like something Steve would review.
It's not that sad, though? Ok it's sad. But the strong implication that Leafy wasn't going to survive the winter anyway made it kinda sweet that she chose to let her body go to feeding the predator's babies, instead of letting her meat go to waste. Although all that does is result in more predators, meaning more ducks will get killed.
....Dammit, Leafy.
I watched it just now it was bittersweet wholesome thought those 3 ducks are so ugly

Goddamn, hearing mother weasel scream for her babies safety made me tear up from that scene alone and I didn't even watch the movie
I think that that scene is where Leafie feels empathy for the weasel in every sense. She knows that if she were in the weasel's shoes, she'd kill for her baby too if that is what she had to do to keep it alive as that is all that matters. She was literally threatening to kill the weasel's kid to save hers, after all.

The uncensored ending is kind of why I appreciate foreign made content much more compared to American made. The concept that not all ending are the perfect "happy" ending. I see that in anime a lot... and it all started in April...
i see that reference how dare you :(
You can at least give credit to Don Bluth's older films that he had a lot of dark themes to them even though they are films that he produced for the whole family to watch, and yes, kids too. And while his films typically had happy endings, there was a lot of sh*t and sad events that happened too. So in conclusion, I give Don props for at least being an American animation film producer that doesn't shy away from dark and depressing themes in children's films similarly to countries outside of the US. If you haven't already, check out Secret of NIMH, The Land Before Time, An American Tail and All Dogs Go to Heaven. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. :)

The fact that Wilson took, "I rather just jump off a cliff," actually took it quite literally.
I think that was actually his last attempt to put a stop to the weasel. If he didn't confront her that night, the weasel would have gone for Leafie and possibly their egg. During most of the fight he was moving backwards and trying to avoid hits, rather than land them. And when the weasel grabbed his leg, he flew as high as he could with her with the hope that the fall would kill her.

At the "weasel tearing up, because she understands the sacrifice of a fellow mother" made me break into tears and this is one of my treasured childhood memories. It left some considerable impact on how I treated death back then. Such a great cartoon.
Leafies sacrifice is legit making me tear up in public.
Leafie is truly and utterly a true mother to the end
It just hits so hard
Even in a review it made me tear up,god damn it’s just so powerful
The weasel's tears to me are tears of frustration (and bitter sweet gratitude) with her role in life as a predator mother and having to take up leafie's sacrifice just to feed her own offspring. (Moms, no matter the species, def don't want their kids to starve) Both have there own roles of existence to play out, and to reach that understanding was amazing in this film. Deep lessons all around. Such an amazing underrated film.
It was an unnecessary and depressive ending. The western version is much better imho. I love Happy Endings in good movies.
@@shairaptor1865sorry bub but this was the original point of the story - two sides of a fence are the same in some ways

greenie sounding like an edgy anime protag is a masterpiece on its own

@@thethirdphase7726 Agreed
Her name is Kim Sang-hyeon, for anyone curious.
The weasel crying when leafie gave herself literally sent chills down my spine everytime I watched it
Finally someone talks about this film.
In the end we see characters looking at the camera'. I wonder if Greenie could sense his mother there. He turns his head slowly and with a very serious expression.
Possibly
Maybe it was that and he realized that she may have died and come to maybe follow him a little before saying goodbye.
Either that or it was Leafie going to heaven and experiencing what would happen if she could fly and follow her son.
Either way this film seems more mature than most cartoons that tend to be made in the west. it tried to depict an actual situation that can happen in life, have anthropomorphic animals g through it and grow from it.
Holy shit that Korean actress for the weasel is amazing. That emotion she captured in the confrontation toward the end of the movie is AMAZING.
It really was, I think that stuck out to me the most. How damn lazy the english dub sounded by comparison. (Like, c'mon, have a little pride in your work.)
Yeah, like it sounded like legitimate terror, there was actually some shakiness in her voice. I wouldn't be surprised if you could visualize an almost disturbingly realistically terrified mother even without having seen that scene, assuming you either knew Korean or could just hear the line and see the translation on screen and nothing else.
I know right! That voice acting is amazing. She deserves more attention.
I adore the weasel's impact on the story. Nothing angers me more than predators being shown as senseless killer's in most media of this kind- plus the way she just affects the whole theme of the movie. I love it.
@Yanis Khaled I agree that the simplicity of children’s stories are better (just villain v hero), exspeically for young children. I been hating how everyone always pities or loves the villain becuase of some tragic backstory or being hot and funny. I swear, you can make that kind of a villain commit war crimes and still be likeable to some. But I believe that this film would work wonderfully for more mature children. They must learn eventually, and would get the moral of understanding others views.
That reminds me of some stories in Buddhism, I believe it might have an incluence on the story, specially that end...
There's one story where a past reincarnation of the Buddha was a monk, and he decided to let himself get eaten by some lions/tigers/big cats cubs, so they won't starve.
And there's another story about a monk that let his blood get sucked out by thousands of mosquitoes, also in other to feed them, as a sacrifice. The following life, he reincarnates as a king and ate through his life the reincarnations of those mosquitoes, that became ducks in other to feed him and compensate him.
I can sense similar vibes, I love this kind of story
@Yanis Khaled Because life is so much more complicated than "good vs bad", it really saddens me that people are so desperate to infantalise kids these days. They're so much smarter than you give them credit for the and BEST thing you can do is teach your children what the real world is like. Unlike the whole "the world is so fair and good, you have nothing to worry about", you need to teach kids that isn't true at all.
When you don't teach kids about life or death they become terrified of it and don't become critical and independent thinkers. The world isn't a happy perfect place where no one dies, never has been and never will be.
@Legend of the Blue Macerator Fuck mosquitos, I hate them too, I won't be qualified for Buddha Land so soon haha

I cant get over the finale of the original uncut version. Leafies sacrifice, the weasels respect for her as she accepts fate, the tears. Leafie wants to help continue life. And she knew that her own body would not go to waste with the weasel, instead helping her feed the children she saw with her own eyes. Leafie is not just a good mother to Greenie, but also a guardian angel to those babies of the weasel.
@@garbagecan6224 same, I dunno if I cried or not but I know I was shocked
Nobody:

Got that weasel’s voice was just tragic… The idea that like… even if Leafie left them and just took her son, that would still be leaving these weasels in a miserable state. She’s just hoping for this meal to be able to feed her children before they starve and now Leafie is standing in between her and their survival. But if she doesn’t comply and let this meal go, Leafie could just crush her children anyway as revenge. The voice acting drives home just how tough of a place this poor thing is being put in and Leafie’s sacrifice truly ties it all together.
They should never have cut the ending, like wow! Its so rare to see a carnivore depicted as simply doing what it must to survive! The weasel even cries when charges forward, showing just how much she appreciates the sacrifice that will no doubt save her own babies! :''''3
To add on to what you've said about Leafie's sacrifice, I notice that it bring's her character arc full circle. She always wanted to be a mother, with someone care and provide for, and she got her wish through adopting Greenie. But with Greenie grown up and leaving home, and her own death approaching, she willfully sacrifices herself in order to provide for the children of her long-time enemy. Leafie has gotten everything she wanted, both in life and in death.
In my eyes, this film feels very much like a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale. The characters undergo tragedy and hardship, but their sacrifice is rewarded in the end and they ultimately get what they wanted.
Honestly, judging by the review, I feel like the weasel might be the real star.
We're led to believe she's just a mindless killing machine: a stereotypical villain that tries to stand in the hero's way. But that curveball where she's only a desperate mother trying to save her babies gets you thinking... she's not evil at all.
And that last part that was unfortunately cut out where Leafie sacrifices herself to save the weasel's babies actually had me tearing up like the weasel. Just think of how she must have felt. The range of emotions. She'd been pursuing this chicken throughout the entire movie, and finally here she is, offering herself. I can picture the tears of joy of finally having her prey, but also... legit tears of sadness as these two had a bit of a bond themselves by this point. Imagine having to kill a friend just so you can save your children...
yeah, they are like two sides of that same coin
I wouldn't necessarily say that she's the real star, rather that she's the most important character next to Leafie and Greenie. The story mainly centers on these two birds, but the Weasel, despite being the antagonist, goes through her character own arc, which is tied directly and beautifully with Leafie's.
This is why she is amazing
There was a huge pile of chickens she could have also ate... I feel they should have edited that out as it depreciates how little food there actually is out there.
@@fireemblemaddict128 Learn about weasels first before saying something about the dead chickens she could've ate, weasels are NOT scavengers they don't feed on already dead carcasses unless they're the ones who killed them.

And after weasel catches her, the story says that leafies spirit flies and is happy about it and she sees weasel while she is carrying leafies body with her jaws. So yeah. The last perspective is leafies souls, while her dream, flying has come true.
OK I'm crying again it's just so sad and beautiful at the same time.
Other depressing animal movies just go for the nihilistic aproach, like: "there you have it kids, nature's just cruel, you get that? YOU GET THAT?"
I love that this ending, while sad, still tries to provide a moral lesson and encourages the acceptance of other world views, and even that death can be a good, or at least necessary thing.
Plus when animals die their bodies decomposers and makes the soil rich, so that more plants and trees can grow.
Accepting worldviews that ultimately causes more suffering and are somewhat moral? Very much objectionable.
Abolishing suffering through biological reprogramming (eg. gene manipulation to prevent suffering from being too extreme, achieving superintelligence, immortality and permanent state of contentment and downloadable memories) and completely changing the state of the ecosystem that is currently causing so much suffering to both predators and prey to extinction is an absolute must that humanity should try to achieve. The current system is a fucking mess and cruelly indifferent to most species, while humans are benefitting out of it.
Suffering-Focused Ethics (Negative Utilitarianism) is very much the best normative morality out there and the society should start realizing it. (Negative Utilitarianism - Utilitarianism, but with higher moral priority to suffering than happiness).

This looks like a BEAUTIFUL movie. I like how that doesn't stand on the troupe of predators being "evil" and prey inherently "good." It also shows an "alternative" family without being preachy about it. Even the original ending is mature in a good, "Don Bluth kind of way," the kind that doesn't talk down to a young audience. We don't get enough of that today.
I agree the original, Korean version is better.
I also think the original is much more "eastern" ethically/philosophically. Where in the West you'd expect something more like "Death bad, life good", I'd expect a movie from someone with an "eastern" background to acknowledge that the plucky young protagonist getting away might spell starvation for a whole family of predators, and that their death could represent the coronation of a fulfilled life and becoming part of something greater.
I feel like its good fof movies to show that predators aren't evil and are just doing what they need to to survive, if movies are always saying how bad and evil predators are kids will grow up to have a misunderstanding of nature and that's not ok. #MoreRepForGoodCarnivors
@@dreamknight1776 Yeah, I'm sure you'd be rooting for the predators if you or a loved one were in its jaws.
I like the way this movie shows death as just another part life. All too often, kids media, especially here in the US, simply avoid the subject because they think kids wouldn't handle it.
But that's obviously not true because kids are smarter than we give them credit for and I'm sure that they've experienced death one way or another, maybe with a family member or a pet. Its important to show them that while death is sometimes sad and even scary, it's just another part of life and one that we need to accept.
So I applaud this movie for being dark because it serves a purpose and it treats its target audience with respect
So my dad died as a kid so I’ve understood death from a young age but my cousins on the other hand were 8 ish at the time, and my sister was lying on the ground preying to sleep. My cousin started to poke her face and ask me what was wrong with my sister and I just said “oh she’s dead” and my sister stuck her tongue out I started to do the father son and the Holy Spirit praying thing Bc I was a little shit😭😭 and I was trying not to laugh along with my sister. but then my cousin asked what death was 💀and my aunt, oh my god she yelled and screamed at me, said how inappropriate and rude that was. And my aunt took me aside to a separate room to yell at me and I had no idea what I had done wrong. The next day she apologized and I think it’s cause my uncle had to remind her that my dads dead so I’m very desensitized to this shit💀 how did their 8 year olds daughter not know what death is, death isn’t just something that happens and it’s not just a part of life, it’s a cost of living and we all have to pay the price some day.
We need more Leafies and Cocos to confront death like this. ❤️❤️
That’s not how it use to be at all clone wars courage the cowardly dog teen Titans all pretty much had to deal with dying and death
@@samanthaswann5071 Exactly, I understand that kids are young, pure, and innocent so on tv we portray life to be happy sunshine and rainbows. But what we really need is a balance between joy and sadness, just so children could understand that life won't always be as great, but that there's better things to come over time.
yes lets put DEATH EVERYWHERE *eyeroll*
Just let kids be kids, they will learn about the dark side of life early enough dude
Oof, and Steve didn’t even talk about the scene where Greenie wakes up one day to find Leafie has just about cut through the red ribbon on his leg showing everyone he’s been caught by humans, and you see red stained on her beak indicating she’s been at that ALL NIGHT. 😭❤️ You can see the stain at 7:18.
Yeah, I thought he was going to talk about that scene as well.
What? Where can I see this particular scene?
i thought her beak was supposed to be raw or bloody from crushing the ribbon against stone.
@@n43amog It’s been a while, but I think it’s right before the duck race scene?

What was weird was that the weasel in the Korean version with the babies sounded like she was screaming but in the English version it sounds like she was just trying to make a threatening voice
In the original novel it was very much the former, and I have no idea why the export version changed it.
This is like the anime version, of the Netflix original “Duck Duck Goose”

This bring back tears....
This movie is disturbing and sad, the MOST disturbing and sad part was at the end when you heard the duck mourning in the background of the cedits
huh where??!!
Disturbing?
Is not disturbing is a bit realistic.Predators had to eat.
Where's the disturbing part?
The scream was from the mom weasel
The tearful leaping part is, to me, the crux of the weasels character development. It's what separates her as a mother doing what she needs to do from a random scenery chewing villain just killing for the hell of it.
Your comment on Leafie flying with Greenie is nice to hear from you.
I like your channel, and dark stuff, but it's really nice to hear a more positive, light hearted observation. It really contrasts well with most things you've done.
If youtube still had the staring system I'd give this video 5 stars, and I don't say that lightly.

I just noticed something. Saberspark reviews all the cursed things while Steve reviews all the deep, and artistic yet brutal cartoons and animated films. Man you guys definitely found your grooves, and you do very well with both of them. You two are my favorite review channels, you pick up things no one else would, on two different sides, and shed light on them in the best ways you can without getting complicated or confusing.
It's just something I noticed, and I'm very glad both of you are here doing this. These were just kind of my observations and thoughts on what you both do. It's in no way bad, it's a healthy way to go about things, not being afraid to explore depths of films and animations that others heavily shy away from or can't explain in a way that does them justice
Saber did do Padak.
@@TheGuardDuck just because it’s deep doesn’t mean it’s cursed 😶

I literally was at the brink of crying at the mention of Leafie's sacrifice! The film was so whole some and sad but it tells a valuble lesson on mother hood
The scene of Leafie's sacrifice is beautiful!
1) The weasel doesn't straight up attack Leafie, almost as if she wanted her input first.
2) The way Leafie just simply stated 'yes', as if she the weasel was in a way was trying to get her opinion.
3) The way the weasel gasped, wearing the expression she did after Leafie said what she said.
4) The way Leafie doesn't say 'You can eat me, so you're babies won't starve' and only thought it to herself, as if she knew she didn't need to say it for her to understand why she agreed.
5) The way she just peacefully closed her eyes, accepting everything that has happened.
6) The way the weasel cried as she attacked her. Respectful yet sorrowful for the willing sacrifice of a mother, much like herself.
7) The flying scene!
Also, both Moon So-ri and Sang-hyun Kim complete the scene with such emotional deliveries.
@@MariusWales I know, it's beautiful! It's a shame the English dub got rid of this scene, it means so much.
Death is a natural part of life, so showing you died for a selfless sacrifice is meaningful!
Koren animated movies are undoubtedly underrated and definitely need more acknowledgement
True. I'm absolutely sick of the "and they lived happily ever after"
@@KlidesCorneroftheInternet Right? I mean I like a happy ending but if whatever happens is done, what happens after? Are they just going to live their lives exactly the same every single day? *Surely* that can tedious.
Most foreign films don't shy away from the brutality of life
@@KlidesCorneroftheInternet but then again it depends on the audience, if it's a particularly young audience, of course you should try and give them a happy ending, but if it's a older one, there's nothing wrong with a darker "bad" ending
any recommendations?
I feel you glossed over wonderos role in the story. He was basically set up as the hero for the movie with a girlfriend and protector of the wild but him getting killed same as his mate so fast it was quite a shock.
Leafie also was shown how much of a mother she can be even without being the actual mother.
Overall people need to see this whole movie to understand the dark of nature.
True. And sometimes Hens are used to raise Ducks.
@@Kairos_Akuma yeah and some other birds raise other babies when possible.
But yeah I did not expect this comment to get 100 likes. I just wanted to say how wonderos roll is basically like ned stark in asoiaf where his death is sudden and he basically gets no revenge since his son dies too but here greenie is left alone and it's ambiguous if he will fight the other mom or whatever. It's just so good and hope people see that.
The wife was nothing much just felt easy to see her go but wonderos was a shock
@R P makes sense but I don't see many Korean stories. But it was a nice shock to see how fast he actually died either way
9:31 had me on the floor 😂 “jolly good, sire! This is a tremendous honor!”
Oh my god... Leafie is one of the best moms I've seen in these movies... And the weasel is an actual character, with regrets and understandable motivation. This is awesome!
This movie looks better than most cartoons these days
And it’s a South Korean one to boot.
“Cough” “Cough” teen titans go....
@@holycowitsgabe515 no not really
And that's a fact
Depends on the cartoon I think Steven Universe is beautiful for example.
Both the Protagonists and the Antagonist won in their own way, Leafie became a adopted mother and raised the child to adulthood and was there when the grown up child leaved the home and the weasel got food for her kits by Leafie sacrificing herself to the weasel.
I distinctly remember having rented a hard-copy English dub when I was a kid from the local library and loving it. Glad to have learnt so much more about Leafie and to see the appreciation of such a touching story.
The weasel is grateful for leafie’s sacrifice to feed her own baby as the weasel cry to eat Leafie he was crying as a sign of saying thank you and also a sign of regret for killing her.
That was my immediate thought too, gratitude seems like the main emotion
You referred to the weasel as a boy and a girl
Only girl
@@minaashido518 probably autocorrect. IOS seems to mix up he and he a lot

It literally happened when I was tryna say he and she
and then the weasel and her children proceed to kill many more animals for food, happy end
Such a beautiful and emotional movie. The message of Leafies willingness to sacrifice and teaching Greenie to fly even though she can't do it herself, being proud of him learning to let go is so beautiful, strong and heart-breaking. It also has a message about how cruel chicken farms are and to have more empathy and respect for chickens. Also I like that it doesn't just show predator animals as villains, but as fighting for their survival as well and not really having a choice. A more realistic view on animals.
I remember I went straight to hug my mom after seeing this film the first time.
I think the message about mother sacrifices is clear even for kids.

my choices on the music scenes in order you showed:
1st: dub, that drum is amazing in the BG.
2nd: korean: the buildup lasts longer... but it’s cool how the dub has a stop at the suspenseful moment
3rd: korean: the guitar really stands out making things feel more in awe
4th: korean: fits the scene better
5th: i can’t pick becausr they both fit great and impactful
At least the piss scene in Angry Birds is implausible because birds can't pee, so that wasn't so bad but seeing the ducks crap into what looked like already murky water before jumping in makes me gag.
