Everything you say makes sense and completely hashes out in the growth of my orchids with the changes I've made since watching this channel. Love and miss you Rick! Hope you're doing well and still able to continue growing. I know it's something that's brought you so much joy. Just like the joy we experience when we're able to finally have success after following some of your best practices. Thank you, Rick. God bless you and your family.
SO GLAD TO HEAR YOUR VOICE in your garden! You already know ill be praying for you! Honestly If not for you I would not be the orchid keeper I am today! Every time I mix my nutrients I think of you, every time I make an orchid clip or pot or spike clip I think of you, the knowledge you have given me is greatly appreciated and I know Im not alone in that aspect. I have actually had situations I say to myself, what would Rick do! Cant wait till your all better dear heart! You hang tough! Oh some bad news, my Brassavola that stopped, died! So I have lost 2 of the 4 since June. Im still trying. Blessings dearest!
....the wonderful words of my viewers gives me so much strength, and determination to overcome anything....thanks Paula.......we all loose one or two........part of growing living things..............hugs from Bama
Rick L. I cannot put into words how much I have come to depend on your lessons. You are my leading 'professor' in the orchid world! For example, this video is one I will review at least five times while taking notes (7:20-12:10). I encourage others to subscribe to your videos for your precise content and examples. Concerning your surgery, I send you, your wife, and all your family every dose of positive energy possible. I'm praying for your swift recovery from the State east of yours. Get better soon! Date: January 21, 2018
OMG Rick....what great info here! You make it very clear for me to wrap my head around. I always have to know the reasons "why" something works the way it does and you explain it so well. Thanks so much once again. God Bless.
I share your feelings, I hate to be away from my orchids, my husband hates them because he wants to go south for the winter. I enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing
Cal-mag is really great stuff, have been using it on my orchids for years and I do the same, I do frequent micro dosages. Regular feeding is so important! Good luck with your surgery, Rick!
I hope your surgery went well and you have some relief from your chronic pain. Chronic pain is the worst as I know all to well. My thoughts are with you and I hope this surgery gives you the results you need. Plants are beautiful as always. Love watching your videos. You make me think and give me ideas , thank you so much for that!
I have started using Cal Mag because I use RO water so I'm hoping for results like your plants...they all look great!! Best of luck with your surgery!!
I find it amazing how much more info is now available - many years ago, both Calcium and Magnesium were classed as 'micro nutrients' and now we know they are 'secondary macro nutrients' so yes, Calcium is one of the main building blocks for all the structures and in so many fertilisers they are missing. When the growing season gets going, I usually feed 3 times and flush once (at quite low levels). This season, I'm going to try switching one of those feeds to Calmag (not mixed in - just on it's own). I would ask - under those circumstances, do you think that the first feed after the flush should be the Calmag or the last feed before the flush or doesn't it matter which order it's done? (I hope your pain is relieved - pain is the 'mind-killer' - it's stops everything from being enjoyed.)
....so true Roger, and thank you for the words of support.....I dont think it will make a difference when Its feed.......I think it will make a difference in how many growths, and the size they will attain, when growing season really kicks in.....since they dont really store Ca, and there isn't really reserves available all the time to them..... Im trying to keep it available in trace amounts so when they need it....its there.....
not sure that calcium and magnesium were ever considerred micro nutrients or even secondary nutrients. requirements in ppm are much higher than NPK, but in farm situations less of a problem to supplement once or twice a year and soil stores it. NPK and others are quite complex to apply properly for specific crops, without wasting unstable nutrients. Anyhow, been appreciating calcium more and more, for both garden and indoor plants, including orchids. Especially that it needs to be applied in ph lower than my ph 7.0 tapwater.
Hi Ricky, great to hear you and thanks for the informative video. I must get an online order to Repotme. I haven’t been able to source CalMag in the U.K. I grow in water culture so will use very little. Looking forward to your next video, and see you pain free hopefully after your operation. Love thought and prayers being sent your way from across the pond.😘😊😊😊😊😊
Chris.......in water culture I think its needed even more so........please let me know how they respond to calmag in water culture........I think the root issues everyone suffers is due to Ca........
Rick, I didn't have to have any hardware placed, but before I had my back surgery, (couple years ago)I was to the point of CONSTANT pain in some form and basically limping along making myself move.....I had micro- surgery ( discs/ nerves pinched/ etc)....Now I can pretty much walk right again, and very few pains...... Hope you feel MUCH better afterwards.... Prayers my friend, and best wishes...
It's great to hear you so enthusiastic about your surgery, calcium, etc. Things are looking beautiful. I had been feeding Better Grow, which doesn't have calcium, and my new growths kept dyeing. I didn't know why. They've been doing much better since I started using Cal Mag. Thanks to you. Best of luck to you and your surgery. You and your wife will be in my prayers. Enjoy catching up on your z's.
HIs videos are awesome, Sugarby 2000! They have gotten me to think about the what and the why of feeding, plant cycles, sunlight, and other things. I am very grateful for him and his videos. It's logical stuff, but just stuff I've never thought of before or been introduced to. Grow on :-)
Hi Gelatokookie. Rick put out a video not too long ago about how he mixes his nutrients. Before I saw that, I fed the cal mag separately, but have since started just adding it to the Better Grow solution. I use rainwater so my ppm is low to begin with. I make a weak solution with Better Grow, then just bump it up a bit with cal mag. Either way of feeding is fine for the plants. I just like the buffet style where the orchids get a little bit of everything on their plate each time. Good luck!
Hi Amy, thanks for letting me know, much appreciated! I remember Rick mentioning that we should be careful what nutrients we mix together so I'd thought I ask you since you also have the Better-Gro fertilizer. Can't wait for my Cal Mag to get here now! :)
I don't do any fertilizing or anything ...yet lol. Youd be happy to know my orchid is still alive and still in bloom. So far I let it sit in water for a few hours then drain half of it out. I do wish I was seeing some growth..but it ain't dead! Lol Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. You'll be in good hands and looking forward to you jumping around 😊
Rick I hope you're well and your wife Jan is able to keep you happy and you're able to keep her happy too! I hope you still have some orchid to look at and enjoy! God bless you both
This was an excellent video, outstanding Rick. Your knowledge is exquisite, I have a lot to learn, yet many people are always coming to see me because they think that I have a lot to impart to others. We all do, but in our own way. Its the interconnectivity of oneness. Keep it up. Runoff and get your surgery. Please, get back soon, we cannot live without you. Love, light and kindness
hi ... glad to hear from you even if its a short one today... My friend, all the best for your surgery tomorrow / today when you finally able to read this ... its not fun back surg... but the benefits out weigh the trauma of what you have put up....its horrible not being able to get rest ... all the best and quick recovery xxx thank you for putting out the video....!!
I just love your positivity! I agree with you about the calcium...since I started using calmag a year ago, the difference has been remarkable. Get stronger and stay as positive as you are.
Perfect video my friend and beautifully explained for everyone being a new grower or an experienced one. May I wish you all the best for your coming ordeal and wish you health for the coming years. Take care Rick, Ed.

You're back!! I'm so sorry to hear you've had such a difficult time lately. I know what you mean about looking forward to the surgery... it will be over soon and you'll feel much better soon! I really admire your attitude, Rick. A positive outlook is a great healer! Thank you for answering my question ... I assumed you were correct on the CalMag question so I did not make a big mistake by following the product instructions. I'm relying on you as my main source of grow information and it has really eliminated much of my confusion (as a new grower). So, I'm looking forward to becoming one of your A+ students! Prayers for your surgery tomorrow!! I see you're up to over 1,900 followers!! Yea!!
Bobette......you continually ask great questions, it helps all the viewers here, thank you so much........my surgery was a success, and Im headed home....
Rick L Oh boy!! So, so happy it’s over and you’re going to be much better now...and out of pain. Take it easy and let your sweet wife take care of you until you’re better. I’ll have more questions soon! 😊
Morning Rick. You probably feel a little tired this morning and the meds are wearing off do hang in there. I spied that tall yellow/brown flower in the white pot/wished I had one...stopped by to see my plant lady friend at Kroger and low and behold see had got in 4 two days before. Love it Of course I bought one had to pay full price. 22.00. The leaves are at least 15 in tall. Light yellow/lime with brown spots. Will probably need advice when you get better. Named it "Rick l because I bought it on your day. Get well soon🐩
Rick L so happy to hear you are back. Your wife did such a good job. So sorry to hear what you went thru, was good to see you up and about. Go slow grow strong.🐕🐯 PS...using my cal mag.
Alrighty! It's official. You sir, have well and truly piqued at my intrigue for calcium! Will deffo give it a go! Your videos are awesome and you are very switched on and knowledgeable. Very happy to have found you Rick 😆
Praying for you Rick! I so look forward to watching your next videos. In regards to the cal mag. As soon as I starting using this product, wow the roots just shot out from all of my orchids. You are so right, use is every time watering. I was also wondering what you are using for your regular fertilizer. What are the NPK numbers, or what brand? I have used two different kinds of fertilizer adding the cal mag, but wanted to know what you are typically using now. Thanks and blessings to you for a speedy recovery. Rita
Rita, thank you very much......as for a fertilizer, I still dont have one....but I'm mixing my own, and will probably stay with it.....I like the flexibility and the results........what im mixing is real close to 20-12-26.........
Rick L Thanks RIck for the quick response. These numbers at least give me a ball park. I have two fertilizers and can alternate between the two, the always adding the cal mag.(The "Magic Potion!"). One thing I'd like to ask, is, is the cal mag considered organic? As I wonder if it could be put on my vegetables, like you said. I realize that you spoke of tomatoes, etc, but some people use miracle grow on their vegetables which is not organic. I am a stipler for this kind of thing. I don't use any chemicals, or I should say toxic things. I would add, however that I have chickens and gather their egg shells for the minerals in them. About two weeks altering applying the powdered egg shells to my African violets, they all shot out new flowers. It may be something that others might be interested in. Egg shells of course are loaded with calcium, but also have magnesium and a great source of other minerals. Anyway, just information for others as well. Hope you are doing well, feeling better, and ready for more plant stuff. By the way, also after using the cal mag on my regular plants, they too have started to perk up and look very happy. I am sold on it too! The company needs to send you some dividends ! Take care, Rita
Awww sleep, when you’re in pain only getting an hour or two of sleep , a 4-6 hour surgery of sleep sounds good. And when you wake I pray your pain is gone, mine was instant. I just started using the CalMag so hoping to see changes soon. Take care Rick an God Bless You
.....your correct Gerri, my back pain is gone.....just feel the surgery pain ..........so much better.....blessed relief!....thank you so much my friend!
Rick hope you and your wife are doing ok. I worry that you are trying too hard because you want to get back at it. Hope she is holding up that's a lot of plants to take care of. Miss you. Take care...get well...see you soon❤❤❤🐞❤🐯
Interesting but then again there is a reason why calcium is so important in marine salt mixes. Them old marine coral need it to build the skeletal structures. But then they add so many trace elements. The trick is finding how much to add to do good but not hurt the plants or fish. But that's my experiment. I think your on your way to finding what I'll call a good bottle mix. Only because you seem to be taking advantage of elements but not necessary growing any form of nitrogen in the way of the bacteria. I may be doing things differently but am still enjoying following your adventures.
......there are several things that should not be mixed with calcium nitrtate.......but as far as orchid fertilizers......its mainly magnesium, ....it can cause them to precipitate or create other compounds.....non of which help plants grow, and can even harm them......You can mix them together, but they need to be completly dissolved, separately on thier own....prior to being added together.
......thats a bit high .....I generally feed 125-200ppm total.....so starting at 350 and then adding nutrients would really make for a strong feed....you may need to use a R/O filter to get usable water.....also knowing breakdown of your well water would be great
Hi Rick, everything looks great 👍💖 beautiful! beautiful blooms! we're i can buy the calcium please? ok my prayers are with you on the surgery and recovery you are a positive person and that is the best! my love and prayers to you and your amazing wife 😘🙏💕👍
Hello Rick When do I use kool bloom or any blooming Fertilizer? One : any time ? Two : season b4 blooming Three : just a few week or days befog budding Four : after budding or spike is pushing out ? Can you catalogues to use Kool bloom Fertilizer for appliances! Plz i need your advice .
I don't ever use bloom boosters on my orchids...…..they cant regulate P & K very well...…..I have used Kool bloom to make my own mix.....but more for experiment and learning. #1...feed them a good nutrient mix and they will be fine...….I use the same one all year long now.. #2...feed them a strong nitrogen prior to blooming and it will make for better blooms......P & K does nothing for blooming... #3....keep the Nitrogen to them all the way thru bloom season.....and till they drop the blooms...….then lower the N till they start growing again. #4....nitrogen......all thru blooming Kool Bloom is a great nutrient supplement...….but its not for orchids......better for Peppers, Tomatoes, Cannabis
Rick L. Orchids you said P&K has nothing with blooming ? what then support to make happy blooming ? N is great for growth along with Cal and then what i can use for bloom ?
…your correct,.. N is important for vegetative growth, but research has shown that ….P & K do nothing for bloom...…...the research has shown Nitrogen has more of a impact on blooming. It provides more blooms, more spikes, larger blooms, and they will last longer with Nitrogen given thru the bloom cycle....
Rick, can you please help me in one of the issues. My orchids are doing fine, but recently I noticed the fresh roots having holes as if something is nibbling on it. Later I found black snails. Can you tell me how I can get rid of them. I would be very thankful to you for this.
......one of my favorite ways to get rid of snails and keep them away is with neem......mix it as directed on the bottle.....and add a few drops of dish soap.......then spray them down roots and all.....snails hate it......
great question.........would depend on what Im trying to accomplish...some minerals are best absorbed by roots and others by foliar feeding........I do both, foliar feeding is a great way to add traces of micro nutrients.......
Hello Rick! I’m from the Philippines. I would like to ask. This month is rainy season in our country. Is it okay not put calcium in my orchids? Thank you!
…..during heavy rains...is when they need calcium the most...…...if they are under trees they will bet some naturally....if not.....its up to you to provide the calcium
just bought this yesterday Rick... hoping that this will perk them up a bit more.... i have a miltassia that has lost all its leaves.. its one of the big plants... i am not sure why any thoughts please...
Chris.....sorry for slow response.....never grow any Miltassia.......I believe they require a good bit of humidity, .... bad air quality, or even mites could cause that as well,
Thank you for your videos. What type of indoor lighting are you using? I have a small collection and they get very little light during fall and winter. Do you have any recommendations for indoor lights?
Thanks a lot for a such useful video. Should we add calcium only in liquid form or add broken eggs' shells into the pot? Could you tell me the name of the purple phal on 0:28? I loved it so much:))
Thank you for the calcium information, I didn't realise till now that there are two types. I, myself, take 1200mg calcium daily (started it due to the nasty side effects of a particular 'pain-killer'). My Hermann tortoise has it in the form of a cuttlefish. It seems all living entities need it. :) xo
Rick, Great to hear from you and best wishes for a successful recovery. I do have a question about CalMag. Is it ok to keep it mixed with RO water for about a week? I’m thinking about adding it to my RO water as it comes out of the unit.
You miss your garden? And I am in your garden with lots of your followers I guess ☺.Is Apsomsalt oke instead of Calmag?Your plants look great as always.Wish you good luck and strenght ...💖..Orchid Soldier 💝
Hi Rick. Hope you are improving. You show a beautiful orchids on some of your videos, a deep purple with pink tips on the petals. Do you know the name of it and where you got it. I would love to have one. Never saw one like that before. Get well but. We miss you.
Well stated (case and point)! Ca & Mg are both critical but Ca is most certainly underestimated. I can honestly say that most orchid growers that I talk to do not do any extra Ca dosing - even when using mostly RO water (which I do not). I do in fact use a Cal-Mag solution (no Ad here) in addition to my normal fertilizer (once per month typically). I do find it makes a difference and I have not seen any signs of Ca or Mg deficiency. FYI - I have only purchased one orchid plant out of hundreds that I have purchased that had a pro-active supply of Ca with clam shells (and it was very very recent). Imagine that -
I am glad your surgery went well! Gorgeous flowers! I just checked General Hydroponics website and their CALiMAGic currently contains Calcium and Magnesium nitrate - is the one you showed in the video a different type?
Everything you say makes sense and completely hashes out in the growth of my orchids with the changes I've made since watching this channel. Love and miss you Rick! Thank you, Rick for this valuable lesson on Calcium and nutrients. I'm a fan of Cal-Mag.

Very happy to have found you Rick 😆
your very kind......anything I can help with just shout.....
Rick L. Orchids not at the moment, but I'll certainly let you know when I get some 😁
Praying for you Rick!
Plz help me of making eggshells powder as cal mag is not available in Bangladesh specially in difficult time of lockdown . Thanks
Great video! Thanks, Rick! Good good luck!!!!!!!

Curious to know with what does Cal.Nitrate mixed become a toxic combination?
......there are several things that should not be mixed with calcium nitrtate.......but as far as orchid fertilizers......its mainly magnesium, ....it can cause them to precipitate or create other compounds.....non of which help plants grow, and can even harm them......You can mix them together, but they need to be completly dissolved, separately on thier own....prior to being added together.
@@rickl.orchids thank you, appreciate your prompt reply.
Plants look really healthy
Everything will be fine. Take care and best wishes for the surgery😊
Good luck with your surgery! I hope it makes things easier for you, can't wait till your back. Speedy recovery.
Thanks for the info and good luck with your surgery! Get lots of rest :)
Great video!! Love the blooms too ♥♥♥ Great info. Get better soon ♥♥
Rick, what about well water at 350 ppm out of the faucet?
......thats a bit high .....I generally feed 125-200ppm total.....so starting at 350 and then adding nutrients would really make for a strong feed....you may need to use a R/O filter to get usable water.....also knowing breakdown of your well water would be great
So how much per gallon of water. How much do I add.
......I usually add 10-12 drops per 1/2 gallon
Hi Rick, everything looks great 👍💖 beautiful! beautiful blooms! we're i can buy the calcium please?
ok my prayers are with you on the surgery and recovery you are a positive person and that is the best! my love and prayers to you and your amazing wife 😘🙏💕👍
Ashley Marquez , I got mine on Amazon, just type in Cal Mag, I got it for $12
Gerri Palmer thank you!
God bless brother you'll come back stronger!
Hello Rick
When do I use kool bloom or any blooming Fertilizer?
One : any time ?
Two : season b4 blooming
Three : just a few week or days befog budding
Four : after budding or spike is pushing out ?
#4....nitrogen......all thru blooming
Kool Bloom is a great nutrient supplement...….but its not for orchids......better for Peppers, Tomatoes, Cannabis
Rick L. Orchids
you said P&K has nothing with blooming ?
what then support to make happy blooming ? N is great for growth along with Cal and then what i can use for bloom ?
…your correct,.. N is important for vegetative growth, but research has shown that ….P & K do nothing for bloom...…...the research has shown Nitrogen has more of a impact on blooming. It provides more blooms, more spikes, larger blooms, and they will last longer with Nitrogen given thru the bloom cycle....
Rick L. Orchids
i agree then what does P&K ? why we use NPK where P & K is higher in numbers ? Thanks
Hi Rick! I miss your videos so I am rewatching my favs! I hope you and your wife are doing good! Take care Rick!
sending love and light from Miami 💞✨
Praying for you and your wife during your surgery. I also depend on your lessons.
Do you use it separately from other fertilizers or add it to a regular orchid fertilizer? Best wishes with the upcoming surgery. Enjoy your rest.
both....I mix calmag with my nutrients as well as add it to plain water for hydrating.....
Rick L. Orchids thanks for answering and helping me out.
I wish you good luck Rick.
Is root or foliar feeding best?
great question.........would depend on what Im trying to accomplish...some minerals are best absorbed by roots and others by foliar feeding........I do both, foliar feeding is a great way to add traces of micro nutrients.......
Rick L. Orchids Thank you very much Rick! 💚
just bought this yesterday Rick... hoping that this will perk them up a bit more.... i have a miltassia that has lost all its leaves.. its one of the big plants... i am not sure why any thoughts please...
I'm supplementing mine with T8 flou lighting.....4 - 6500k bulbs in each fixture.....
Thanks a lot for a such useful video. Should we add calcium only in liquid form or add broken eggs' shells into the pot?
Could you tell me the name of the purple phal on 0:28? I loved it so much:))
that's a noid Phal, beautiful but nameless, .......egg shells are Ok but need time to break down and supply any usable calcium,
Rick L thank you
Hope your recovery is going smoothly, Rick. Have you ever combined the GH CaliMagic with the Better-Gro Orchid Plus fertilizer? Thx!
yes, so far no issues........
Hope you get you sleep...and Godspeed...thank for the Vid
Where can you buy it?
Which fertilizer is better..
Osmocote or npk...
…….not a big fan of osmocote for orchids...…..its not how they feed..
All my prayers for you 🙏
Thank you for the calcium information, I didn't realise till now that there are two types. I, myself, take 1200mg calcium daily (started it due to the nasty side effects of a particular 'pain-killer'). My Hermann tortoise has it in the form of a cuttlefish. It seems all living entities need it. :) xo
Good luck with your surgery! See you soon.
Rick, Great to hear from you and best wishes for a successful recovery. I do have a question about CalMag. Is it ok to keep it mixed with RO water for about a week? I’m thinking about adding it to my RO water as it comes out of the unit.
wont hurt it at all..........just get in the habit of rechecking your totals before using....just in case something changes....
You miss your garden? And I am in your garden with lots of your followers I guess ☺.Is Apsomsalt oke instead of Calmag?Your plants look great as always.Wish you good luck and strenght ...💖..Orchid Soldier 💝
Epson salts is magnesium sulfate.........Calmag is mainly Calcium with a little Magnesium......not the same product..........thank you
Imagine that -
would love to hear more..........wonderful words.
Positive thoughts...prayers🙏🏻
I am glad your surgery went well! Gorgeous flowers! I just checked General Hydroponics website and their CALiMAGic currently contains Calcium and Magnesium nitrate - is the one you showed in the video a different type?
