Used to work for Ubisoft, this is going directly against their anti-corruption corporate schlop videos they make all employees watch once a year (which has a mandatory test at the end to see if you get it, that you have to pass). Just goes to show the hypocrisy between what they practise and what they preach.
"You saw the videos, right? You passed the test, correct? Good. Now go and do exactly what the videos told you not to do." Ubisoft Marketing Department probably.
It seems to be a normal thing in corporations. I work for one myself and same thing: tons of anti corruption videos. While they themselves are suuuper corrupt.

Another effect on the whole reviewer industry: *Reviewers who don't "play ball" won't be invited to exclusive early industry reviews, and they won't be included in "official reviews" on review websites that "play ball".* 🤦 *_This has been going on for a while._* 💯
Film reviewers have been caught taking "bribes" of $50 dinners for good reviews. As far as I'm concerned, if your opinion can be bought for $50, it is essentially worthless
Oh, this has been everywhere for a while. Regardless of industry, i'll bet this happens to some degree. though i doubt that even with this a lot of people will become aware.

@@MrNadav1995 You *can*, though most people tend to give different reviews when they're bribed. And it taints the whole thing, regardless of the review given.
Same thing happens with doctors and pharmaceutical companies. They can't accept payment, but an all-expense paid vacation and fancy dinners? That's somehow fine. Doesn't _necessarily_ mean they're corrupt, but if they don't succumb to the influence of their "benefactors", they won't get anything like that again. Basically bribery with extra steps.
@@Ralathar44 the only thing that comes to mind right now is the fact that Larian didn't need to lift a finger doing any of these. Which is why we've had decades of good CRPGS and none have been smash hits, they didn't have the production values. The mainstream is pretty shallow lol.
Imagine having to market for anything Star Wars. I'm old enough to remember when it was a money printing machine. Before the dark times...before Disney.
Disney was never the issue for Star Wars games as far as I know, the poor quality of the games was because it was mostly IP and no quality and thats why people lost faith. After the 50th Flop or poorly made game people started not taking it seriously, there was a time where the Star Wars lego games were the best ones coming out ....
Dinsey was always the issue. They closed Lucasarts, canceled Star wars 1313 and they were also devoloping a Darth Maul game too wich also got canceled . Disney wanted to work with EA and Ubisoft wich means they wanted lootboxes and seasonpasses in their games instead of well written stories like kotor because, its the same with dinsey plus atm. Disney is just beating a dead horse at this point and they still have the nerve to call their fandom bigots
I've seen it happen quite a few times giving a bad review that's honest is better than a good fake review the main time I see people not getting review copies again is when they try and push an agenda like saying the game is sexist or racist or hating cause it doesn't have enough "diversity" giving bad reviews without even really talking about the game 😂
These journalists and influencer's are only kissing ass just so they can continue getting free crap or keep their jobs. Ubisoft wants to flood out all the criticism and ramp up sales after their poor pre-order numbers.
I remember when Theory wanted to back the last jedi or whatever, and they snubbed him. He still gave it glowing reviews after he bought his own copy. Now they want him to back this game, and he said that he will just buy his own copy. 😅
Correct. That also goes for everything else, not just games. "Company xxx just sent me a thing to review. They are not paying me for this video" but getting stuff for free is payment! You are just easy to bribe. The reviewer is fully aware that if the reviewer says the product is bad then there will be no more free stuff.
@grus.clausen oh please, you're the only one being weird here. Twitter has been around for a long time and suddenly changed their name. People calling it what they are used to is very normal. You on the other hand, defending a brand and trying to gaslight the other guy is weird.
Shocking how no one saw this with Elden Ring too. They release a small update and suddenly everyone stops/drops to play it? They’re getting away with it too.
the amount of money they spend on this could have spent on competent developers lol. Dunno why people still defending Ubisoft. If the game Star Wars Outlaw is this bad, imagine AC shadows how bad it is going to be.
This was the same shit Amazon pulled with their Rings of Power show. They invited "fans" and "influencers" from around the world, lubed them up with alcohol, showed the preview in a castle, and gave them goody bags to commemorate their stay. They were interviewed after and all sang praises for the show.

100%. I worked at a newspaper awhile back. The editor wouldn't even use coupons given to our newspaper from restaurants that advertised in the paper. Present day journalists are increasingly propagandists.
Here's gamergate in a nutshell: TB wasn't the beginning of gamergate. It was Zoe Quinn sleeping her way around higher-ups in game review organizations. She made a shitty rpg about anxiety, and all those same review organizations acted like it was a 10/10 masterpiece. The consumers realized it was a pos and found out why it was so highly rated. Obviously, after finding this out, the consumers criticized them, and the organizations responded with "you guys are just mad because you hate women." The consumers fought back with good points and were constantly told they were misogynists, so they ended up evolving into actual misogynists and it ended up flaking because the consumers got so fed up, they just gave in. So review organizations got away with it and the consumers took a loss, even though they were completely justified, because they gave up and now we are still treated like the monsters in that whole shitshow.
Mostly good... Cept the part where you're missing the Zoey Post, Operation Disrespctful Nod, and the coining of the term done by Alan Baldwin. Not that you're wrong about the outcome, but that was the fault of the gamers themselves, most of whom balked when they were attacked by the media heads in question. Too many would be saviors of the industry completely devolved in their effort to police "undesirables" out of the collective outcry so they could appeal to the very organizations responsible for this corruption in the first place.
@GeorgeMonet Yeah, but he wasn't absolutely wrong tbf. He was pointing at something that could have been loosely related to it. As in, TB probably caught some flak for that situation by the gamergate crowd.
@conormccue2871 I hadn't heard of the latter two parts, so I may have to buff up on it. Lol But in my own defense, I did say that the consumers did it to themselves. Some were already real misogynists, but a lot of the regular Joes just accepted the label when they got fed up with being told they were the villains.
No what i remember from gamergate, was journalist getting caught taking pay offs. Which did actually include gaming consoles. Then giving big review scores, for games that didn't deserve the high scores. Then the buyers of said games, got duped into buying them. Then they got caught, which is the part i forget in how they got caught.
Its hilarious that Asmon still thinks journos in the wall street journal(or any news publication) would be fired for publishing stories when they have a conflict of interest. We are WAY past that point in our current year.
The company takes the bribe in those cases which is why the worker writing it cannot take the bribe or else company not get the bribe and they ask for a much bigger bribe.
When 2014 gamergate happened the legacy media ("mainstream" media back then) called us terrorists. They didn't allude to it, they outright said it. You don't hate journalists enough.
Yeah same for people ask "why they make this slop dont they like money?" We are waay past that they already rich and big enough disney etc, so make a "message" in every entertainment are the priority this time

I wouldn’t say irrelevant More like they are the backup or support to further push a message or a narrative if the regular methods aren’t working they already have complete control of the major game journalist groups so they moving on to influencers But journalists are still used to add more And regular gamers eat that garbage up.

Zoe Quinn also unalived a guy. Made false claims about Alex Holowka, and turned his own sister against him. The lies got him harassed so hard he yeeted life itself. I'll never forget that.
This is a common part of the modern cycle. All the shills 'get flown out for a preview event and enjoy themed activities, followed by a 4 hour gameplay session' it's essentially what the marketing budget is for. Bribery. They then give a glowing review of a vertical slice of piss poor gameplay, misleading their readership and encouraging them to throw their money down the hole. Redfall is a prime example of this, and one of the worst offences.
It has been like this forever... It is normal branding and commercial strategies. Vaping companies are doing the same thing theese days. Heck youtubers recieve tools and machines and things for free all the time in return for good reviews...
@@tipsyt1909 really? So you don't think that people being positive about what is clearly (from all the clips we've seen of terrible AI, boring fetch quests, 10yr old looking graphics etc.) a boring dumpster fire of a mess, having being wined and dined and treated to a visit to Disney World isn't suspicious? It's widely done and Ubisoft is one of the worst ones for it along with Bethesda. Of course they are allowed to be a 'little bit' critical or the illusion would be shattered. The main issue is that whilst no one trusts mainstream media like IGN anymore anyway, a lot of these creators have followings that are misled time and again so that the creator can have a 'relationship' with publishers. It's a severe trust issue and creators can't resist double dipping. When Outlaws comes out and it's one of the worst running, worst playing and least attractive games of the year, all of these same creators will put it in their bottom ten games to be released in 2024. This is despite encouraging their audiences to pre order it earlier in the year in exchange for more clout, a fancy mouse pad and some nice memories.
perfect example. if a cop or judge or lawyer gets caught planting evidence or doing something unethical in one case, it creates a domino effect of reopening every case they've been in because you now have to question whether every previous action was ethical and conclusions were come to based on the evidence of experience and not other examples of influencing their opinion
In the EU, any sponsored post or video has to be flagged as such by the creator. UA-cam aswell as twitter/X have those rules world-wide in their community guidelines. So not only are they (EU creators) breaking actual LAW, they are breaking the community guidelines on the platform they post on and make a living off of. Only outcome of this should be, lawsuits against any EU creator participating and not flagging these posts as paid promotions, and stripping any other from their "entitlement" of having a youtube and twitter account. Leeches and grifters shouldn't be allowed to make money off of this without any repercussions.
This has always happened, journalists have always been invited to big events put on just for journalists to do with games. Normally it involves a play session of the game, then drinks at a bar or a themed day, or a trip to the devs office with a tour and meet the team etc. I used to work as a journalist for (at the time) one of the largest MMO publications and being invited to events wasn't the bribes, the amount of times I was told by developers that they would pay for advertising on our site if we gave them a positive review was insane, and when I would turn them down they would say "but this is how the industry works". I was so lucky that our company didn't force us to take these deals. We also got offers to host fake game of the year awards where we would be paid to let a certain company (normally Chinese devs) win. Of course inviting you to a cool event might make you look on the devs more favourably, the biggest draw is actually advertisement deals and those are what are used as the real bribes because that's how most publications make the vast majority of their money. Reviews and guides are just a way to funnel people into clicking on ads to play games. I will say there are plenty of companies that have never behaved poorly, I have always been a really big fan of companies like CD Projekt Red, CCP Games and a handful of at the time indie devs, because they didn't engage in this sort of behaviour. Also the biggest problem with games journalists was that they aren't actually gamers. 9/10 journalists that I met didn't play games in their spare time, had no idea about major games being released unless they were specifically reviewing it, and when I would ask what they did beforehand they normally were writers at financial / business publications and were out of a job but knew someone at the gaming publication. They were just doing it as a job, no passion for games whatsoever.
I see, pretty sad affair, but not surprising. And it's pretty obvious when you see youtubers getting some success and then more and more realizing they give a pass on previews especially for any weakness, and show hope for a great game. They'll say they are being honest but can't fool people for too long.
I remember when Eidos flew a bunch of games journalists from the UK, Germany, and the US, to Egypt for a week-long holiday, which included visiting the pyramids, and a trip along the Nile, back in the late 90s, and it was done to promote Tomb Raider 2. The company behind some PS1 Porsche racing gaming around the same time gave the editors of a half dozen major gaming magazines brand new Porsches.
It is the same with the Acolyte, I unsubscribed from Carly King a Star Wars UA-camr after she simped hardcore for the show, got called out because she was obviously bribed/buttered-up, then made a video saying that that isn't true and she actually loves the show and lowkey implied that any and all criticism of her or the show is sexist and not valid, claimed all the negative reviews were 'review biombings' and not real, and played dumb in the comment section saying things like "I have no idea where people get the idea that Disney bribes people for fake reviews!" Like girl, them flying you out there to play is the bribe, and her comment section was filled with clearly false positive comments paid for by Disney, the comments were so fake gushing over bad B-list actors that no one likes or cares about.
You can tell she was most certainly bandwagoning during GamerGate. You can’t trust a shill when you notice one, they will sell you out if money is involved.
Why is anyone surprised about this? The whole fly out and pamper influences for an event is common practice. Like this whole companies buying influences drama is decades old. Like i remember TotalBiscuit having to go out of his way to decline these things. And even buy his own copies of the games so his reviews wouldn't be biased.
Force gaming accepted the bribe and did the 4 hour thing. IT is so shitty he didnt even have anything nice to say he jst repeated what was happening on screen. This shows that the game is terrible and not fun.

I didn't care about the game when it was announced. With the busting of bribery being reported, now Ubisoft (and to a certain extent Disney) is losing my respect as a business.
A german youtuber group recently uploaded a SW Outlaws video. They sent, I think, a two hour finished video to the PR agency that represented Ubisoft and got back a 20 minute video that was basically just "preorder SW outlaws. Preorder preorder preorder!"
So they were schmoozed for a full week just to get to play 4 hours of gameplay? How on earth can you justify a WEEK VACATION for 4 hours of gameplay and NOT think you're being bought and paid for!?!?!
This is the same problem we have in financial auditing with accepting clients’ gifts. It’s important to not only be independent but also appear independent. Someone should not put themselves in a position that even appears compromised if they perform a review of any kind.
Most government officials at a high level are completely dependent and don't care how it seems, journalists at the highest levels are political operatives, as well. There are some pockets of society that operate somewhat on the up-and-up, thankfully, not a lot though and not a lot that critically matter.
I worked at Ubisoft Montreal as a tester for a few years back in the early to mid 2010's and it was such an amazing place to work with really dedicated devs. Seeing them take constant L's like this is kind of sad, they deserve it, but I remember a time where Ubisoft was a dream job.
Ubisoft games at the reason why i got into gaming so muchback then. Rainbow Six, Splinter Cell and especially RAY MAN. Holy hell Ray man was the goat back then. And then Assassin's creed being so damn cool, walking around with a hoodie made imagine i was an assassin . Cringe but cool. It was inspiring. Now they make products. Not art piece, but products. Most of them are event decent enough to not be shit but not good enough to be called "good". They're perfectly mediocre. They found the solution to make "high quality" games on the surface with no soul in it. And since Ubisoft has massive brand recognition, their big games always sell well.
Ubisoft literally has many famous IPs like Prince of Persia and Splinter Cell, yet they always choose to make something we don't want (I'm not talking about star wars or avatar)🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
yea but prince of Persia is lame and has never been good and splinter cell is also trash. It is good that they moved on from those games to make actually decent games.
I remember way back, when the original Splinter Cell came out, reading an article about it with some interview from the devs. They were explaining how they went over different character models to decide what worked best for the game, and they chose a slightly older man with a bit of gray in his hair, because they felt it was more believable that way. Like he wouldn't be some kid, he has to look experienced at what he does, far from being his first mission. How i miss that... Now. the characters they use, no one can stomach it, nothing about them can be taken seriously. ubi deserves to lose money on the slop they're trying to sell, there's no excuse for it, along with their anti consumer attitude. they can stick their game where their modern audience... i can't finish that.
@Yimmytheglol Dunno what you're on about. POP predates Tomb Raider by 7 years, and the old ones like sands of time are classics. Not say I have faith in Ubisoft bringing it back right.
They also had an event where the flew in people. It’s common practice and pretty much a must for any big game these days. No 900$ Disneyland tour though.
@@raskolnikov6443 The issue is using the "gifts" to pressure them into submitting their summaries to internal review, not that the gifts happened in the first place. If Ubisoft gives you 5k in bribes and there's nothing stopping you from shitting on the game anyway, then it's kinda w/e. It's the fact that Ubisoft used the bribes to justify controlling and editing the narrative put out by the influencers that makes it a real problem. The influencers didn't just sell out their integrity, they sold out their agency - they might as well be Ubisoft employees "reviewing" their own game.

They used to do this for every game 15 years ago. I remember as a kid reading gaming magazines and they we're always describing this really cool event Ubisoft/EA/Rockstar etc hosted for reviewers before they went into the actual game. Like this was a tactic ages ago and it worked back then. It stopped working cause magazines we're vastly outpaced by the vast amount of content creators on the internet. They are just bring this marketing ploy back and Im not surprised because it worked back then too.
Same thing with the getting a review copy. Who cares if you paid 60$ or got a code, if your whole career revolves around reviewing most games you can probably spend the money. Why does that matter in a review.
Yup. Well, they never stopped. They just keep it under hush-hush levels with NDAs. Free alcohol, caviar, etc. are the norm along with plane tickets, expensive hotels and a stay at places like theme parks if they're near. Getting invited to consolates, battleships, submarines, etc. is also pretty common. When the ethics of this were questioned some 10 years ago it became hush-hush again -- Angry Joe revealed he was sent to a party and rode a tank around this time. The incident where journalist allegedly slept with a developer for a good review was just a tipping point for the want of journalistic integrity that then transformed into what was eventually called gamersgate and when radicals from all positions usurped it for their own beliefs (as people are wont to do when drama happens and they takes sides). The one thing that came out of it was that it became law (or the law was finally enforced, I forget which) that people had to disclose deals with companies when they shill them, which mainly effected video content such as youtube. Though a lot of journalists were ostracized when they supported integrity and admitted to these deals with companies as their peers didn't want to lose those benefits. It's understandable why, as many of them work for free and free copies of games and trips 5 or 6 times a year is a form of compensation. It's unfortunate that if you go against the company and write a bad review, those trips and free copies suddenly stop in many cases. The concept of video game company blacklisting is matter in of itself and those who are paid have to write controversial articles for clicks.
It's like Ubisoft is having a weekly meeting saying "what else can we do to be hated this week?". 😂 They keep burying themselves in controversy on top of the boring ass games they keep shitting out.
i think giving a free copy of subject material (the game) is in my opinion the upper limit of what a reviewer can receive from a company and still ethically call their content a "review". if they receive anything more than the base gameplay content (a disc, cartridge, or game key) they SHOULD disclose that and avoid calling any related content a "review".
this is partly why I didnt watch youtubers who played this, there was no way people were actually claiming this game was good without being incentivized to give a beneficial opinion.
That was my same thoughts on Last Epoch, and several other games. There is no way the buzz around elden ring is legitimate. Souls like games are not good games they are niche games.
I wait for the reviews that come out days or weeks after the game launches. If the review takes longer, it usually means the game is good enough to play more

This is similar to 2021 to 2022 (25.9%) but, as with the prevalence of overweight (including obesity), there has been an upward trend since 2015 to 2016 (22.6%). So it is my mistake to use the word "obesity" specifically. America does have a lot more specifically obese people, but the number classified as "overweight" is very similar. I never play AAA (or "AAAA" for Ubisoft) games anymore. Any of the "big" games that I play are +6 years old, current indie games, or from smaller game companies. The reasons why: - The games are cheap and fun. - The games work and don't bash me if I have an issue with it. - The games don't pretend to be amazing when they actually are. - There's a larger following and a surprisingly wide genre of games to choose from. - I've seen some indie game developers continue to make new content when they don't have to, making the game even better.
I tend to not play newer games as well, but even now there are a couple of modern AAA games that are absolutely amazing. Zelda TotK for example was a masterpiece
There is actually many good AAA games, too. For example I liked Ghost of Tsushima and my brother liked The Last of Us 1-2. And indie too have bad/grindy games. So my advice, don't be prejuced; don't preorder; understand what you like in games, and what dislike, and choose games that considering likes/dislikes. p.s. I like indie too.
Of course they did. At this point Ubisoft could be running an internment camp and I’d be like, “Checks out.” Never seen a company make so many stupid decisions in such a short time span.
As an exmaple, in Germany it MUST have the AD tag on it. Because everything that is being paid for, is payment in physical form. So it doesnt matter if its paid in dollar/euro, but also if you get paid in physical items, too :D
I work in an embassy and we have clear and unmistakable guidelines when it comes to _bribery_ : Any "gift" of a market value superior to 50€ (or 55 USD) is considered an expensive gift and should NOT be accepted. If you accept it nevertheless, it needs to be declared at the Embassy and will become the governments property, aka you forfeit your gift. Inviting a local partner for lunch or dinner is fine, getting invited is also fine, but as soon as a spouse/partner gets involved and expensive bottles get ordered it is also considered bribery and you will face disciplinary action. Does the Ambo (ambassador) do it with local or other international partners? Yes of course. But there is a budget for that, it is mentioned in reports, receipts kept where possible, and it's generally called "diplomacy".
@@charlesbrown4483 What more context? En embassy is a countries diplomatic representation in another country. You might have local laws that accept or tolerate many things, what is important are your own rules within your own territory. I work in a European country's embassy in a Middle Easters country. Corruption here is rampant and somehow expected by many people since they don't know any better. Our government however imposes us to respect these rules, aka I can't offer anything to an country official or representative (or even a simple citizen) over a certain value and I can't accept anything over a certain value, if not I am liable for bribery.

Most youtubers are promoted by UA-cam. so it make sense they would protect their ''promoted champions'' you think youtubers constantly doing stupid shit, not getting cancelled for it but instead getting paid for it is a coincidence?
Activision does the same thing for Call of Duty, sending loot boxes to streamers and sending streamers on trips to promote the newest CoD games. Right now they're buttering up streamers for Black Ops 6.

Exactly! Lack of ethics has always been an issue, but it seems now it’s just the normalised behaviour.
Yep. I have no idea why Asmond got this so wrong since he is old enough to have been in his early 20s at the time.

$10 Million to Devs

@@MichaelPohoreski I mean that is probably fairly accurate don't think the /s is necessary
I see, pretty sad affair,
but not surprising.
And it's pretty obvious when you see youtubers getting some success and then more and more realizing they give a pass on previews especially for any weakness, and show hope for a great game.
They'll say they are being honest but can't fool people for too long.
Creators make games look artificially fun because they're always cheating in every 360 no scope B roll
What I love about all of this, is the ad for THIS VIDEO was for SW outlaws...
It is the same with the Acolyte, I unsubscribed from Carly King a Star Wars UA-camr after she simped hardcore for the show, got called out because she was obviously bribed/buttered-up, then made a video saying that that isn't true and she actually loves the show and lowkey implied that any and all criticism of her or the show is sexist and not valid, claimed all the negative reviews were 'review biombings' and not real, and played dumb in the comment section saying things like "I have no idea where people get the idea that Disney bribes people for fake reviews!"
Like girl, them flying you out there to play is the bribe, and her comment section was filled with clearly false positive comments paid for by Disney, the comments were so fake gushing over bad B-list actors that no one likes or cares about.

I worked at Ubisoft Montreal as a tester for a few years back in the early to mid 2010's and it was such an amazing place to work with really dedicated devs. Seeing them take constant L's like this is kind of sad, they deserve it, but I remember a time where Ubisoft was a dream job.
Most of the current employees still talk about Ubisoft like this 😂😂
Ubisoft games at the reason why i got into gaming so muchback then.
Don't forget about The Division!!
yea but prince of Persia is lame and has never been good and splinter cell is also trash.

😂 They keep burying themselves in controversy on top of the boring ass games they keep shitting out.
imo ubislop is like the kurosanji of gaming lmao 🤣
Its not meetings on how to destroy the company but meetings on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion which is effectively doing the same thing.
Asmon: It's corruption ! It's that simple !!
Ubisoft: It's lobbying, trust me bro.. no corruption happening at all !
i think giving a free copy of subject material (the game) is in my opinion the upper limit of what a reviewer can receive from a company and still ethically call their content a "review". if they receive anything more than the base gameplay content (a disc, cartridge, or game key) they SHOULD disclose that and avoid calling any related content a "review".
Agree, but even the free copy should be disclosed.
this is partly why I didnt watch youtubers who played this, there was no way people were actually claiming this game was good without being incentivized to give a beneficial opinion.
That was my same thoughts on Last Epoch, and several other games. There is no way the buzz around elden ring is legitimate. Souls like games are not good games they are niche games.
I wait for the reviews that come out days or weeks after the game launches. If the review takes longer, it usually means the game is good enough to play more

In 2022 to 2023, 64.0% of adults aged 18 years and over in England were estimated to be overweight or living with obesity. This is similar to 2021 to 2022 (63.8%) but there has been an upward trend since 2015 to 2016 (61.2%) (Figure 1). In 2022 to 2023 26.2% of adults were estimated to be living with obesity.
Though in my personal opinion the BMI for "overweight" is way too high, so both America and UK should have way more people classified as obese.

- The games don't pretend to be amazing when they actually are.
- There's a larger following and a surprisingly wide genre of games to choose from.

Does every embassy have guidelines against bribery?
There has to be more context than that. Are you saying I couldn’t go see a friend in whatever European country you’re in an get a $55 gift?
@@yak-machining Yes ... but that doesn't unfortunately mean each country/people/official respects the rules.

Corruption here is rampant and somehow expected by many people since they don't know any better. Our government however imposes us to respect these rules, aka I can't offer anything to an country official or representative (or even a simple citizen) over a certain value and I can't accept anything over a certain value, if not I am liable for bribery.
