Wow, what a great memory . . . blasting out of my parents' driveway in Clearwater, Florida in 1964 on my way to college at Florida State University. Left a fine girlfriend behind, but found one inTallahassee who's now my wife of 46 years. Great times then and now. "The unexamined life is not worth living."--Socrates
always loved you guys Mike. When I lived in Louisville I've laid in my bed many times at night listening this wonderful song on my little transistor radio. Brings back so many memories, you guys are such a great part of my life. Thank you all.
1964, Dance to this song, my Senior Prom night, The Monarchs was a fan-fantastic Louisville , Ky group then and still today 2012, growing up with these guys, listening to them sing was a treasure!! Still today, Wonderful memories thru my life!! ,
I always loved this song. Haven't heard it in ages and for some reason it came to mind so I looked it up. These men are fabulous. It's nice to hear them sound so good after all these years. True professionals.
@@howardgoodman3536 Well, I looked it up and while it says Monarchs it doesn't sound like this band but I've been wrong before. I don't remember the song being I was only 3 yrs old at the time. lol
While I was the Promotion Director at The Mall on Shelbyville Road in Louisville in 1973, I held a live concert inside the mall after closing for a local Childrens Charity with the local firefighters, featuring two of Louisville 1960 local great bands, the Epics and The Monarchs. The Monarch got a rave applause with their hit song, "Look Homeward Angel". A night I'll never forget. Rickey Poppell
Great memories, so glad I could have been a part of this. Every Teen Dance on the Belle with the Monarch's in the 60's I was there Thanks for the memories
The Monarchs will be performing at the Jefferson Town Community Center on 10/21/22. Doors open @ 6:00PM. Tickets are $35 at the door, proceeds to benefit Dare to Care. Having seen this show every year prior to Covid, I can say it will be a great night out to hear lots of, "Oldies". This group never disappoints.
This song went to #1 in twenty markets through out the US and Alberta,Canada. The band broke up in 1968 but reformed in 1972. They were sold out at every performance and gave thousands of people in and around the Lou. area a great night out, listening to and dancing to the great music of The Monarchs. Their lead singer,Mike Gibson, had on of the greatest falsetto voice's in all of "Rock & Roll"!
Great memories. These guys played at my senior prom, New Albany High School, 1965. I'm happy to find this video and I'm going to send it a bunch of friends who also grew up in the metro Louisville (Southern Indiana) area in the 60s.
Searched many times but haven't heard this record since August '64 - my heart pounds, back there again - only those who lived it can imagine the context, how this song sounded in the eclectic sequence of hits in that amazing year - starting off with the brand-new Beatles - then the avalanche of so much more - and the first muscle-cars, ten-speed "racing" bikes, and Honda motorcycles - a fabulous year to turn 16 - oh how I loved my little Jeannie - with this track now, my '64 archive is complete.
Cynthia, I also am a great fan of the orginal Monarchs, on occassion Mike Gibson still preforms with them, I try and go and see them when ever Mike sings with the new age Monarchs. I'm like you they were a great musical treasure and have enjoyed them for years. I believe Mike Gibson was one of the greatist fallseto singers of all time.
This was one of my all time favorite songs from 1964. Obviously the original 1964 tune was dubbed over a TV recording from the '70's. I remember the mid '70's when I too sported a hairdo that looked like a dead rat on my head. How the hell could we stand those styles? But somehow we thought we looked great.
I lived in Iowa and listened to this with my girlfriend at the time. I Ioved this so much and have traveled to Louisville to see the monarchs since. They are super!
ME TOO... RUN INTO MIKE SOMETIMES.. STILL GO TO THEIR DANCES.. TOOK COSMO HOME..NOT LONG AGO.. HIS CAR BROKE DOWN.. )) WE ALL GREW UP AT THE SAME TIME IN THE 60'S... WHILE THEY WERE ALL STARTING THEIR GROUPS.. I STILL LIVE IN THIS AREA... YOU?? GREAT PLACE TO LIVE.. ))
Your Uncle Ernie was a great guy and a good guitarist as well. Could repair any mechanical thing that broke and flew the group around in DC-3's. I liked Ernie--he was a trip!
You are correct...no one has posted The Fortunes' version of this, but they DID record it, and it is just as good as The Monarchs' version, trust me. It is hard to find..the 45 is probably impossible to locate, but it is on at least one Fortunes' compilation album/CD, as i have it ! Keep searching, you will be rewarded if you like this song.
@cynthia6637 Did you go to Male H.S. ? I attended from 60 to 63. Was on the Drill team and went to a lot of dances. What a great time to grow up. Maybe I didn't grow up !!!
I know of that site..i also have a friend, a pastor in LA, who is the #1 'Fortunes Expert'..i will ask him if he has a youtube name, then maybe you can ask him also.i did a quick look and could not find the record, though...i think maybe my friend taped it on a cassette for me years ago..i remember playing it over and over..you WILL like the Fortunes' version !! We will keep trying to locate the song to post it ! Also, try to listen to 'The Idol' by The Fortunes...
Within a few weeks i will make the effort to find my copy of The Fortunes' version, and post it as i did for 'Mrs Jones Garden'- I had a friend do that with a cell phone, i think...i dont know how to do it myself. The Fortunes also had at least one other song, from 1967, which was fabulous, called 'The Idol'. A 'live' clip of this has been on and off youtube a few times, i dont know why it keeps getting pulled. But, see if you can hear that on another music site, it is one of their best for sure
Yep, i am an old time rock fan and love this song by The Monarchs...The Fortunes did not do it better, but about as good..The Fortunes' version is a bit more upbeat with great harmony...I hope you can hear it somewhere someday ! Meanwhile, i had a friend post a very good song called "Coming Home/To Mrs. Jones Garden" which is great but no one knows. Search for it on UA-cam and play it a few times, then get back to me !
I know the song came out in 1964 (I have it on a 45, great song). I assume the video was from some TV show, maybe late '60s or early '70s, judging by the longer hair styles, big lapels on jackets, etc.
Did YOU just post The Idol ?? The clip is on youtube again..if not, make sure you look at it before it gets pulled again. As far as our conversations, heck, there is no difference of opinion- "Look Homeward Angel" is GREAT by the Monarchs and Fortunes...try also to find "Books and Films" by The Fortunes= pretty good ballad from '68...
That is a VERY odd coincidence that i mentioned The Idol, then someone just posted it (again)...if you play that a few times, it may become one of your faves. Are you from Louisville? I have an e mail music buddy from Nashville who really has some obscure stuff..now, here are two to try: the British group Family Dogg had a hit called 'A Way of Life" but also did a great version of the old BeeGees song "The Storm"- they are on youtube, check them out.
YEP... I WENT TO MALE HIGH... BUT I DIDN'T GO IN UNTIL 1963.... TO 1966.... YOU WENT TO SCHOOL WITH SOME GUYS.. THAT THEIR NAME WERE HALLS... ( LAST NAME.. REMEMBER.. AND HALLS BROTHERS.. ? STILL ( I AM ) AROUND... GOING TO THE DANCES...
I generally don't like comments by people who say one singer or group is better than another, but I'm afraid I'm going to be one. I personally like Johnny Ray's version of this better because he puts so much more emotion into the song. Or, it may be that it's Johnny's version that I remember when I was young.
Lovely melodic recording of this song, like it a lot. Must admit though that I prefer the Johnnie Ray version. Don't think the Monarchs had any hits in the UK which is why I hadn't heard it this side of the Pond.
A hauntingly beautiful song that I never get tired of hearing.

Amazing song from 1964......The Monarchs from Lousiville Kentucky .....Awesome
was BOB CASE IN THE GROUP?
I am firm Louisville Kentucky lol
Tragic beauty. Thank you Monarchs...I was just 15 when this was #1.
Where was it #1?
Peter Orleman just guessing it was #1 in the Louisville and Lexington areas at least...maybe as far north as Indy.
@@peterorleman3043 It also went number 1 on the Detroit charts. A lot of people thought the Monarchs were a black group.
BY FAR ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITES!!!

Yes.. maybe a little superficial but, so much classier than what guys wear today.

My all time favorite....
The original version was recorded by Johnnie Ray late 50s. 2:56 Ray did a terrific version of this song. One of his best.
