I came across 2 CD's by Paul Penny called "Louisville Hit Makers" in two volumes. The Monarchs, Tren-Dells, Cosmo & the sultans, and the Carnations to name just a few were on those CD's. Good music.
+Joyce Jeffries Joyce I have to agree with you the original Monarchs are timeless, their original lead singer, Mike Gibson, was one of the best singer's in all of "Rock & Roll". We are right about the same age so we both remember when they first started in 1960. Because we are close in age I hope you went to their dance's when they regrouped in 1972 and sold out at every dance the performed. My wife and I with friends went to 15 or more of their dance's a year when the reformed in 1972 thru 1979. When Mike Gibson left The Monarchs in 1979 we never went to another Monarchs dance. We became friends of Mike's and when he left the band at the end of 1979 they just weren't the same. But as you know the group is still performing, there are still two of the original members still performing with the band. And the are our age. We had many great time's going to their dance's in the 70's. Glad they're on UA-cam, you can go back in time and remember the great time's you had dancing to the great music The Monarchs performed.
I love it when a band is *tight* and *loose* at the same time. This was the soundtrack to my freshman year in high school. This song charted here in Detroit, and during the golden age of Motown, that's saying something.
Great cover of James Brown. When I heard it in Detroit, I thought it was an NYC group. Took years to find it. Thxs UA-cam for solving the mystery. Couldn't believe they were a group from Louisville. Guys, I love your tunes....but you need to work on your moves.
@@charlesdemean3055Mike Gibson was the best vocalist to ever come out of Louisville KY and it's not close. They also had a hit record with " Look Homeward Angel".
I've made comments before about what a great musical group the original Monarchs were. Their great original lead singer, Mike Gibson, made this great local band so fantastic. The Band backing Mike were the best and together they entertained thousands of people over the years.
The monarchs have had many incarnations in louisville. I say them do this song in the early sixties in Louisville...Great group.....I believe they are still performingl....in the two thousands...although I could be wrong.....great group.....many great moments...thanks
''This Old Heart'' made the top 10s of two stations in the DC area, WDON and WPGC, both in nearby MD suburbs. Don't recall any other nearby stations playing it. Did not really fit in with the mellowing sound of most top 40 around that time. I was unsure that they were the ''same'' Monarchs group until recently when I researched on line.
I guess I first heard this on the old 790 WAKY when I was a little kid in the early to mid 70's (I wasn't born until '68) then I didn't hear it for years and years and about 7 or 8 years ago I heard it on the new WAKY 103.5 while I was driving through Clarksville, IN and it had been so many years since I had heard it it was almost like I was hearing it again for the first time. Brought back a flood of good memories from my childhood though. I just found a new old stock 45 of this song with Look Homeward Angel on the flip side and bought it.
Yes The Monarchs are still preforming throughout the Lou. area, there are still two remaining orginals still preforming with them. Last year they were celebrating thier 50th year as a group. On occasion the orginal lead singer, Mike Gibson, is invited to preform with them. After 50 years they still draw large audiences.
One of the great do-wop (or rock) vocals of all time. I've always felt that if the Monarchs were an east coast group that this would have been top-5 nationally. It's one of those hidden gems in rock history. It sounds as good today as it did back then!
Thank you...we were 18 naive' and lucky...you are right about distribution. It went to the top of the charts slowly in different markets not all at the same time as the record label did not have distribution in place all across the nation. Great days though lot of Dick Clark caravan fun with other acts..
I remember my step father telling me about "regional" music. How a song could be popular all across one area and never heard of in another. He went to Detroit back in the 70's and took his albums with him and his friends there were really getting into his music and he listened to and got into a lot of theirs.
04/11/10 .... A great group with a great sound this is my first time hearing them at first, I throught they were a black group yes I know never assume.
In very early 60's when segregation was the rule, the Monarchs got booked a couple times, by people who had heard the records. So they "sounded black" and a couple times were booked sight unseen to clubs that were all Black. The band was nervous, but once they started playing everything was ok. The great James Brown wrote this song.
LOL. He did once, when the Monarchs opened for the Four Seasons. He was so pissed because they did half his act, and locally they were just as famous as him!
UA-cam was created for moments like this - one of my all-time favorite oldies on the planet, not just Louisville!

Still Fabulous after all these years. Timeless group and music. The soundtrack of my youth. (Just turned 70 yesterday). LOVE the Monarchs!

thats my grandpa!!! mike gibson!!!
Sarah, your grandpa has/had one of the greatest voices ever. That falsetto was fantastic. You should be proud!
Best singer to ever come out of Louisville. He should have gotten more national recognition.
Wow! My father is up there with your grandfather! Bob Lange.
Been to many Monarch dances. Starting going in 1970. Love these guys. Very talented!
Louisville had a whole lot of great bands in the late 50's and thru the 60's.

You're not the only one. Black radio stations across the country also thought they were black, and programmed this song. Did they get a surprise!
I was a teen ager listening to them
I still love the song though :)
This song was originally by James Brown, but the Monarchs took it too new heights. A great song and group from the early 60's.
Killer.
Eat your heart out Frankie!
LOL. He did once, when the Monarchs opened for the Four Seasons. He was so pissed because they did half his act, and locally they were just as famous as him!
The song may be from 1963, but that video is sooooo not 1963, lol, the hair and the suits are all wrong, the moptop beatles haven't even got here yet
Better than Frankie Valley
