As a retired prison teacher in Norway, I have spent much of my life visiting other prisons in Europe. So, while other people are visiting the castle at Sintra, near Lisbon, I spent my time with other prison teachers at the prison there. There are some features of the Portuguese prison system that are outstanding. For example, people caught driving without a valid driving licence. In Norway, and many other places, this results in not just a fine, or prison sentence, but also an embargo to get a valid licence, that may last one, two or five years. Some people end up unable to get a licence for their entire lives, because of repeat offences where they continue to drive, because they have no other realistic options. For example, there may not be public transit that gets people to work on time. In Portugal, at least at the time I was visiting the prison at Sintra, if you were caught driving without a valid licence you would go to prison, and receive driving lessons while there, so that when you leave, you have a valid licence! I thought this was a very humanitarian approach.

Move to Aveiro. Costa Nova beach is great! Lisbon is cloe enough and so is Porto. Aveiro is a great location!

Super video, I totally agree with you about Lisbon. I just came back for the second time this October. Love it there and there are so many areas in Lisboa that are not to hilly to live in. Went to Porto but I like Lisboa much better. Thanks for all your info wishing you the best for the holiday season. Going back again next year and going to school to study Portuguese………🤗🇨🇦

We based out of Lisbon when we visited in March. We absolutely loved the city and it was great for checking out other places. We to the train to Porto and rented a car one day to check out the surrounding area. We are still deciding where we want to live but are leaning towards starting in Lisbon.

As a full time traveler just came back from Lisbon . Seems there are two camps on their opinion of Lisbon.. some love it , some hated it .. I preferred Cascais and Estoril . Lisbon was good to see but the graffiti,trash ,noise ,traffic and the grittiness of it did not appeal to us . Smell of piss at times burned my eyes . Would not return to Lisbon .
Now we are in Funchal , it's a different world , much better .. Loving the Madeira vibe and in a week or so .... onto the Canaries en Espana..🌴🌊..

Lisbon versus Funchal: Lisbon has colder weather and more crime. Lisbon has a lot more things to do, and it is connected by train, subway, bus, and boat to lots of other cities. Lisbon has more diversity, and great public transportation.

Another great video. Interesting comment about the graffiti...we noticed the same thing in Prague & Budapest though more so in the former. Like you, we were saddened by this given all of the beautiful buildings they were on.

Lisbon is very hot from June to October and very chilly from November to February... Nothing to do with Madeira... But people are much more openminded... Public transports suck a lot, you will end up using Uber but is cheap... The beaches are far from the city and beach season is a nightmare to travel, public or car... Best beaches in Europe ? Did you onow Greece, Canarias, Italy, Southern France and Cyprus ate part of Europe ? Best beaches in Europe ??? LOLLLLL, even in August the ocean is chilly

Lisbon is only the starting point for any foreigner who wishes to live in Portugal, the same would happen with any other European city, be it Madrid, Paris or Rome to give an example. I have seen some videos of other North Americans who started in Lisbon and ended in some small town in the interior, in the Algarve or Porto. The same thing happens in Spain, they live in Madrid for a while and then they go to Andalusia, Valencia or Mallorca, no matter the destination, you should never assume that no matter how much you like the place, it will be the perfect place to live and It is always advisable to travel around the country and see other places.

@@ItllBeFun Interesting how you just decided on Madeira without knowing the cities first. I suggest you visit Aveiro. It's a good median between Lisbon and Porto
i have a better place for you to live ,calm close to the ocean and 50 minutes to lisbon by bus ,but you have to get a car ,but the surrounds are espetacular

@@ItllBeFun its called lourinha and .is a small town 60 kilometers north of lisbon ,cheaper then lisbon and close by ,buses every hour if you feel the need for a bigger city to spend the day ,takes about 50 minutes to get there ,and very close to the ocean ,is a nice beach called praia da areia branca 3 kilometers away ,obidos ,peniche ,baleal is 15 minutes away ,i have a house close by too .and you have nice places to eat and cheap where the locals go for good food ,i dont change this smalls towns for lisbon to live ,more calm .more secure , i leave my door open all day ,if you need more information let me know .

Yes, you are correct. In Lisbon the Golden visa is no longer an option. D7's, D2's and Nomad visa are available for this area. The Golden visa is currently available in other areas of the country.
