I’m a Mauritian living in london and for years been trying make dalpuri which is as close as Mauritian street food dalpuri. Amazing receipe. I’ve just added some turmeric whilst the dal was boiling and used the water for the dough to get the yellow colour. Thank you so much for posting this video!
Hi I'm from Mauritius as well living in U.k.. i made dhal puri during this lockdown.....delicious. I use tumeric as well, as in Mauritius we like the dhal puri slighly yellow. I only add salt and freshlly roasted ground cummin seeds in the dhal and we do not use yeast in the flour. It is interesting to see how it is made in different part of the world. Thank you for the video.
Thanks for the recipe. We ate this dal Puri 35 years ago in our maternal grandparents house. They're no longer. We miss them and miss this Dal Puri. Since we live in America there is no we can have this and don't know how to make. I feel so emotional to see this easy recipe. Again thanks to you and my grandparents.
Please go through tanvir paksala - u will be able to see the best original form of it - because this purely an Indian recipe - if you want the real taste of it, you may search it on you tube - sorry if I have disturbed you - bye
Thank u soooo much... I’m a southern girl with island ties... just have no clue which one. My ancestor is Ms Mary Reddick & that’s all I know about her, but these loves and flavors of the Caribbean are strong in me, for real. I could eat curries and jerk and Dahl puri ALL day Errry day. I didn’t have access to an island grandma, ma, or auntie to show me how to make these... so THANK YOU SO MUCH for showing us how to do this.
That’s How I Make My Dholl Puri,I Use To Stand Up And Watch Those Women At Becon Snackette In The 1980’s And That’ Is Where I Ate My First Dholl Puri And Mango Sour And Learned How To Make It,Absolutely The Best Way,Thank You For Making The Video ❤❤❤Guyanese Makes The Best Dholl Puri ❤❤❤
My mum used to make great roti and I was always upset that I never learned from her. Now I've found your channel I will definitely give it a go. Thank you and lots of love from the uk
My husband is Guyanese and I’m Cambodian. His mother is a wonderful cook and lives about 6hrs away, he misses her food so I’ve been trying my best to learn how to cook Guyanese food. Thanks for this recipe! I’ve subscribed.
You made the puri exactly how I love it and guess what? I tried it for the first time and it was perfect. Your explanation was on point. Thank you for teaching me how to make puri.
Nothing can compete with the exquisite grubby taste of those old timey Guyanese school vendors, chicken foot, flutie, poulourie, crush ice, ice block, dhal Poori etc...not even gourmet restaurants can achieve that quality, I'm sure they dig their behind and put it in there but it's all good
i grew up in Trinidad and i tried so many times ,countless, countless times,i finally got it correct this time ,My rotis even puffed up when i was cooking,,,so nice and soft.which i had learnt how to make them before leaving Trinidad at age 14
Thank you so much for sharing. I am not from a country that makes this but fell in love on my travels. I now make this once a month and my whole family is addicted
Hey guys I’m Mauritian and I thought only Mauritians know about dhall pooris It’s my favorite. I’ll give it a try because my son and myself would die for dhall pooris!!! Thank you so much 🙏🙏🙏🙏
OMG Im Mauritian living currently in England.I just saw this and thought it was a dhall Puri making from Mauritius cause it looks exactly the same. Woow amazing! In every corners of every streets in Mauritius they have dhall puri sellers. A lot of times during peak hours you have people queuing to buy. Inside the dhall puris they put a choices of spicy sauces or curries and the famous fresh chillies. Thank you sooo much for this video! Its nice to know other parts of the world share the same street foods, exactly the same. Remind me of home...
It’s so interesting how on the other side of the world we share a common thread through food. We serve ours with curry or with a chutney we call mango sour.
Marie Burr, it is our common bhojpuri culture from our Indian Ancestors. Metemgee, great job..dhalpuri looks delicious but first time I am seeing your technique of grinding the split peas. I use an old fashion mill to grind.
In Mauritius, it is so famous, we even have it with chicken curries called kaalia. Every street you will find a dhall puri vendor, it is an everyday staple for every mauritian
This was a very detailed and step by step clear video. I was very much attentive throughout. Great teaching style. I'm going to try this recipe today. Cheers🎉
I am from Kerala, India, we have a similar recipe called boli, where in the filling is sweet with dal and molasses, cardamom and the no yeast is added to the dough, love your video👍

Making dhalpuri is an art , after having tried for about 20 years , I have given up , but watching your video makes me feel like I will give it another go . As a little girl I've always enjoyed a bowl of spicy chicken curry and some dhal puri. Even as an adult it's just as enjoyable. Thank you for sharing this. P.S Much love from Guyana 🇬🇾 ❤️
I learnt to make paratha with your video tutorial am so grateful, I’ll do the same with this too, I greatly miss our traditional foods, my wife likes them too, she is Caucasian from miami.
I tried this today and it was phenomenal😍I also remember buying dhall puri like this from Central variety store opposite Central High School on Symth Street....and at many other street food places...thank you so much for this receipe ...finally I can make this puri
I had to find this video and thank you one million times for this recipe. I hv always hated making dhal puri. It would break, be messy, just a real stress. Firstly the dough is absolutely fantastic and the overall end results was the best I have ever had making this dish! Also i noticed that this dough did not soak up oil like a sponge. Thanks for a great recipe.
I know exactly what you mean by ‘school time’, tuck shop dhol puri, my older sister would sometimes purchase from Central High school and I can still recall how good they tasted, even after all these years, so thanks for your recipe.
To avoid burning, my grandaunt which is from Jamaica, will use the spatulor to move it side to side will its in the pot .. she in an hindian so trust me it really good
Best dhal puri roti video, love it, my neighbor he is a Guyanese and he talkes about pepper pot a lot 🙂 ,so how did u come abt learning to do like the one at u had at school
Lots of trial and error. Lots of failed dhal puris until one day I tried softer peas and it was perfect. So I kept making it that way and then after a few years decided to share.
Thanks for sharing this recipe have been trying a long time to get my dhall puri that way . I tried it yesterday and it came out perfect my husband and children enjoyed it .
Hi Auntie, did you know the mauritian normally would use the same water that boiled the dhall to mix the dough. Try that Auntie, it adds better taste and flavour.
@@annmarto8169 but the roti takes on a reddish color.when u use the dahl water in the dough,i used that water to cook rice in my rice cooker, came out soo good, i put the rest in a bottle to use next time, nothing wasted.!!! and my roti came out so good!!
Hi I'm from Mauritius look yummy same as mauritian dhal puri but we dont use yeast or baking soda to knead the dough first tym I'm watching ur video 👍👍👍👌💓💓💓
Hello, thank you so much for the recipe. It was very successful and the entire family enjoyed it. I am from Mauritius originally and living in UK, so it was like being back at home. Thank you so much and god bless.
Scroll through and read the comments of others who’ve tried it. Making dhal puri is not easy but if you take your time and follow the recipe as written you’ll get it!
I enjoyed your tutorial and proceeded to try it. I failed when it came to rolling out the stuffed dough balls and disaster. The filling kept squirting out the perimeter of the pouri....any suggestions....help.
Delicious but I simply cannot get the texture right. The filling always squirts out and the entire rolling process is a disaster. I’ve made plain roti without peas for years and I’m a whiz at that so what am I doing wrong??
Wow the best dhal puri recipe!!! Tried so much recipes before, this is definitely the best. They came out super soft. My boyfriend is from Mauritius, we live in Germany. It tastes exactly like in Mauritius, thank you so much for sharing your recipe :)
