Should I replace 1 ignition coil or all 8 ignition coils in my F-150?
Generally for this F150, we recommend to replace all 8. You can get away with replacing one however if the other coils are not very old (5 years or newer is our general guideline), but if you are not sure, or you know that they have never been changed, it is best to buy all 8. Besides not having to replace coils randomly, you can save a lot more on the bundle. Many owners experience more than one old ignition coil going bad within a short period of time. If your ignition coils have been replaced recently, you can get away with replacing just one, but this is usually not the case.
Misfire codes are typically:
-P0301 Cylinder 1 misfire detected
-P0302 Cylinder 2 misfire detected
-P0303 Cylinder 3 misfire detected
-P0304 Cylinder 4 misfire detected
-P0305 Cylinder 5 misfire detected
-P0306 Cylinder 6 misfire detected
-P0307 Cylinder 7 misfire detected
-P0308 Cylinder 8 misfire detected
-P0309 Cylinder 9 misfire detected
-P0310 Cylinder 10 misfire detected

DIY Ignition Coil Testing
This is a free ignition coil testing method that will only work if the coil is 100% dead. Here’s what you need to do - while the engine is running, unplug the connector. If the misfire gets worse, then that coil is good. If there is no change, then the coil is bad. It's imperative that when you carry out this test that only the harness connector is disconnected, and the coil is not removed. If the coil is removed/ separated from the spark plug while connected to the harness, and the engine is running, the high voltage has nowhere to go, except back into the coil and into the vehicle electronics system. This can damage the coil, and even the main vehicle computer. Any coil that is separated from the spark plug while the engine is running must be grounded somewhere.

Appreciate it. Thought at first I would have to take off the fuel rail.
Had a bad coil among other things that needed fixed. Took it to a mechanic because some of the repairs were more than what I wanted to do. I asked them if I should replace all 8 of the coils. They said they tend to be expensive so they only change them as needed. No sense in changing one if it's not bad. Truck had 195,000 miles with original coils. Ran great for a few months then another coil went bad. I'm going to replace them all except the one the mechanic already replaced a few months ago.
If you can afford it, replace them all.
Actual Removal starts at 4:08
Great video. Thanks,... walking out to change my #1 coil pack now.
Thanks, I changed the coil and the truck is back to normal.
Hell yeah!!! Nothing better then doing it yourself and knowing it was done correctly.
Easy peasy! Thanks for the great video!
TY for the video. I had #2 cylinder with this problem. Your video made it super easy to fix. I had no idea how to do it before watching.
Thanks for the video man! Great explanations of everything!
Super helpful. Thanks man
Perfect Video.. WOW!! Thank you!
Ok I have a question are not the boots on the coils rubber? How does that soak up any liquid now getting old and hot and even chemicals could and I'm sure does break them down but absorbing. not so sure. but would like someone's opinion.
anyone know why when i look at all these videos they show the coil having the bolt and a plastic top? I have a 1999 F150 Lobo 4.6l but mine has more like a rubber coil with the wire attached to it. I cannot take it off so if anyone has tips or clues that would be great thanks
Can you reach cylinder 4 without removing fuel line ?
I have the same problem with cylinder 4, I'm not able to get to it, did you ever figure it out?
@@fenderfox5080 I ate the cost and took that one to the shop, it was 110$ unfortunately still a cylinder 4 misfire lol
@OtterPup_ I actually did cylinder #4 yesterday, I basically laid on the engine and blindly found the little bolt, I just bought a Dewalt mechanic set recently THANK GOD!!! It came with all those extensions and 90° elbow and I felt around got it all switched and it worked perfect. Also had to unhook the negative from the battery for 15 mins to reset the check engine light. Other than that it was just patience and about 2 hours of planking blindly 🤣 at least the rest of the cylinders are easier to reach. Thanks for the update
@@fenderfox5080 glad you got it man! I don’t think I could get the leverage needed , my socket kept popping off the spark plug somehow when I turned it never figured it out. I was sitting up under the hood too 😂
Thank You Sir 👍
Can this make your truck shake and ride very rough when you press in the gas?
Yes. Whenever you put a load on the engine. Worse in a 4.6 than a 5.4.
@@cyclepowered8799 thanks. Does the 2003 F-150 have the same spark plugs order as the 2002 F-150 as in this video?
@@keephiscommandmentsandlive9860 I have a 2005 F150 4.6 and a 2002 E350 Van and they have the same firing order. Others, I don't know.
@@cyclepowered8799 is the firing order the samething as the spark plugs order or are they two different things?
@@keephiscommandmentsandlive9860 Same order for both
I just replaced a coil pack and plug on cylinder 4 and a week later I ended up with a misfire on cylinder 5... Whats going on here why would this happen
Exactly how much raw fuel will destroy a catalytic converter? Asking for a friend
What are the symptoms of bad coils on my 98 fi50 . It cuts out and bogs but the fuel pump and filter are new
Those are individual coils. Not "coil packs". Coil packs are two or more coils ganged together. Typically used for wasted spark systems. You have coil-on-plug. COP.
If you walk into a parts store and say I need a coil pack, they will know what your talking about.
How do you remove that clip slow motion
This job sucks. I used 1/4 inch drive with 2 universals and 3 extensions. And an impact driver. Plugs I used a 3/8 drive and Milwaukee 3/8 impact. #4 and #8 coil are the hardest to get at. So I just change them out. Don’t want to go back in a second time. Just getting the boot out is frustrating. Lots of curse words will come out.
You would think after 100 years of making engines Ford engineers would make it a little bit easier for mechanics to work on their vehicles…
?? This takes like 10 minutes
@@niflag Takes hours. especially if the boot is stuck on the plug.
What’s the best thing to get if the boot is stuck on the plug and your tore the boot
@@johnedwards2127
I stuck a stainless welding rod between the boot and the spark plug to unstick them two. Then made a small hook on the end of the rod and stuck it down the boot to hook it out. I used stainless because it was stiffer
Is it normal if it has water inside ?
No that’s not normal at all. You have a coolant leak somewhere that’s leaking down into the spark plug well.
Number 8 is misfiring bad on mine cop ( coil on plug) and boy what a pain in the ass of a job replacing it l0r oks
I have a number 4 misfire..how did you do yours?
2002 F150 why won't it go into 4th gear
The #1 coil pack on my ‘01 f150 5.4L has failed several times within a few months of replacing. I have replaced the spark plug. No problem with other cylinders. What next? Is there a way to check the wiring? Suggestions?
The oem replacement coils are all cheaply made. Just buy a pack of coils off amazon. Mabye a v10 pack for 10th the price.
Thank you, for us handy handed folks that just lack the knowledge, well made video 😂
I have a question. I have a 2003 ford e150 with a 4.6l v8. I had the p0307 cylinder #7 missfire issue. I looked up diagrams and swapped out cylinder #7 coil. #7 to my best understanding is the 3rd one closest to the driver. My van doesn't seem to jerk anymore but I'm not 100% that i did it right. Did i do the right thing? Or does the firing order makes another cylinder #7? I don't know how cylinder order works, so i don't know if i did it right. It's a wheel chair transportation van and the last thing i want to do is get stranded, but mechanic wants over $700 to fix it. Did i swap the right cylinder coil?

@@bundysgarage thank god! I got it right then. I'm sweating bullets right now. That's a relief. I ran it around the block a few times and it feels good. Thank you very much for the quick response. I thought the firing order was gonna make cylinder 7 #3 or something and i was gonna have to go back and change it 🤣🤣 Thanks again!

@@bundysgarage already did. I appreciate the help! You're a life saver!
Your mechanic is a scam artist.
haha i dont have a cat to damage >:D
my '97 f150 has the two quad coil packs, so much easier to replace.
So i learned today that if your code reads ignition coil D thats number 4 and its a bitch and a half to fix
Are you sure that's a 4.6 another 5.4? Because I got a 4.6 and it has ignition wires does not have a coil pack on top of my spark plug like that
Depends on what year it is. I believe 97-98 models had the coil packs with spark plug wires going to the spark plug and starting in 99-2010 they started using Coil On Plug design. 99-2003 4.6 and 5.4 engines are identical on the outside, the difference is from the bore and stroke of the pistons that’s makes them Iether 4.6 or 5.4
@@srcobra50 . Okay I still have an encounter one with plugs and no wires. All I've seen is the 5.4 with coils on the plugs
Is it possible to connect a tach on a Ford 4.6 two pack engine?
Find a wiring schematic for under the dash, since some models came with a tach in the dash you ought to be able to find that unused signal wire and tap into it.
Does the firing order change when you switch the ignition coil with the one next to it?
Negative
