These are good ass tips, and with the last one for sure was something I learned with experience. "Listen to your own voice. Chris Stapleton has no business singing Justin Bieber and vice versa" was what my vocal coach taught me, and I don't agree 100% but I get what she was saying. I grew up listening to Alicia, Mariah, Adele, and other great female Singers. So when I started to sing I wanted to have the range and strength they did, and with alot of practice I actually learned to imitate them pretty well and learned alot of skills, but it still sounded fake. So When I started singing in my own register and in my own voice I noticed the couple years of singing so high set me back in learning to sing where I should be. My vocal coach told me I should try singing deep blues or soul music instead of pop and r&b music when practicing The quality and tone and color of my voice has gotten so much better. And I even found a love for true blues music. I can sing lower than I thought I could, and my vocal control is WAYYYYY BETTER.
the tip about not opening my mouth wider than if i was just talking normally, that's probably the best tip I've gotten from anything on UA-cam so far when it comes to singing better, thanks dude!
the only thing anyone naturally has is the tone of their voice, staying on pitch, expanding vocal range and being able to do runs and have proper breath control and all that is something you have to learn no matter how good ur voice is, so while lucky isnt completely incorrect, he deserves more credit than that imo
@@luisthree while it's true that singing comes a bit harder to some people than others, it should never stop u from pursuing it. As long as you can hit the notes in your vocal range correctly there is nothing stopping you from just enjoying singing, and when you do it often you will improve inevitably. working on your technique is always possible, as long as you can talk, you can sing
@@helenwinter3320 Hello, Im trying to learn singing but I noticed I always run out of breath midway through the lines when I do high notes or something similar. Do I need to expand my lung capacity by cardio or do I just need to control it better ?
As a vocal coach, you are mostly spot on with these tips. A lot of this I tell my students, even down to the exact wording on some of this! Great lesson. 👍🏾👍🏾😊
Another good tip is to record yourself. It can be painful at first, but you’ll notice so many things you never noticed without the recording. For example, when I first started singing I pronounced things way too loosely and had too much nasality.
Thank you mentioning the changes in volume. It usually goes unnoticed by people new to singing. And regarding pronunciation, I was taught to yes, round out the vowels and also to soften the r's and e's. They hit the ear too harshly when they're pronounced hard.
Great content, I’ve come across so many videos that have long intros or the person teaching is talking in an over-peppy customer service voice. I love how calm and to the point you are 👏

Okay, that back straight and chin down tip is pure gold. I have heard from countless vocalist friends of mine that sing from the back of your throat, and I never could get it right the moment I put my chin down and my back straight I could hear each note bouncing around in my head and my throat.
Your channel alone has given me the inspiration and confidence to finally buy a guitar. Videos like this are so helpful..keep doing what your doing man love the videos!!

Great video! Some wonderful points and really interesting to hear your process! Particularly vowel modification and dynamics are things often overlooked, but so important :) As a vocal coach myself, I wanted to point out that how much you open your mouth is very dependent on context, opening it more isn’t necessarily always wrong, but it’s great you’ve found something that works for you ☺️a big thank you also for your guitar tutorials, I’ve been slowly working my way through your frank ocean cover and just love your chord voicings!
Great tips, and I'll be immediately incorporating them. The chin down to hit the higher notes is incredibly helpful to me to hit this e I was having trouble getting to in a song I just wrote that's the best I've written in 15 years of songwriting. Now on to tracking the demo!
Great advice. I’ve played guitar for many years. Recently I’ve been working on singing, sometimes it’s a struggle, but I’m improving. Thanks for the positivity!

These are more than singing tips, it's tips for music in general, you can apply this to every instrument (your voice included) and any genre. Thanks for this :)
Insane how you packed in so much crucial advice into one video. I struggled with some of the stuff you talk about for so long. Particularly picking songs and changing keys. I would want to sound so good at a specific song and would get annoyed I wasn’t, when really my voice just wasn’t really well suited for that song. And for changing keys, I only realized this way to far in my journey. But eventually you realize even artists will play their songs 1 full step down from the recorded version sometimes if the powerful notes are at the top of their range. Knowing how to pick the right key and make a song my own has made me a “better” singer almost overnight, it’s amazing. Thanks for sharing!
Super agree, especially to the last tip! Choosing the right song AND key. Some songs are great in their original key, but you'd end up straining yourself because it's too high or too low. I'm learning this, too, to be comfy in a song and really navigate an entire song and not get tired, and be satisfied because it fits my voice/style. Thanksss for your tips! Definitely will be more mindful of my posture and chin. Lovin the aesthetic and warmth of your video, as well.
Great video my man. You also have a great natural voice. Especially the part about changing the key of a song to fit your voice (and not the other way round), is particularly useful. What I like to do is play the MELODY of a whole song on my guitar (in the artists original key). That allows me to identify the highest note their voice is reaching. I then transponse that highest note to my highest note and then I can sing the song more comfortably.
Sick video man! I would really love to just see you riff in different keys/tones/ways etc (kinda like you did at the 8 minute mark)!! Just feel like it’d be really insightful and helpfullll
Awesome tips and I’m applying not opening my mouth so much all the time. The one place a wider mouth seems to help is in pure head voice (not falsetto) but past our mix around A4-C5 and up. We’re both baritones so we don’t feature that a lot but we got it! I feel like opening up my mouth there helps the notes come out more easily. And your tongue-forward vowels (EE, IH, AY, AAH) sound fine but definitely more pop than soul. I used to think EE sounded stupid too but if you get it ringing in a mixed voice, it’s very powerful. Check out “Stella By Starlight” by Tony Bennett in the bridge for some beautiful EEs. You can blend some more of that chest resonance into them for power cause it’s already narrow you won’t go flat. Think like a giant he man for an exaggerated version.
Do a vocal test to find your range and see what "vocal type" you generally fall under.(don't sweat if it's not clear cut in one type) then look up songs with that vocal type on Google with genres you like.
This makes so much sense! Oftentimes, I find myself not really getting what people are trying to explain with singing, but these tips really do live up to the video's title! I've been trying to learn how to sing for the longest time, because I aspire to become a singer, but I don't have access to coaches or classes. I've been looking for these types of tutorials online, and I'm glad I found this one. :)
These were really good points! I actually find for some reason when i close my eyes my voice is a little better, not sure if this is just in my head though😅 Also, i find choosing a key that suits me is hard as womens vocals are always expected to be high. My comfortable range is lower than that so i sing in a 'mans range' but then that can go too low for me so its a struggle😬
at 2:03 you played a Cmaj7 instead of Bmaj7, which was technically a mistake, but it sounded so nice because it created a lot of harmonic tension. Crazy how we make mistakes but they end up sounding great in a different context. If you end it at Cmaj7 it would make the resolution to Bmaj7 really satisfying. Great video man. The tips were very helpful!
Awesome! quick question bro: I feel like I can sing comfortably in C# mainly. I’ve noticed I always transpose towards that key have you noticed you sing at around a main key?!?
Joseph!!! You are an amazing singer!!! Love your two cents and great ideas. I am a vocal coach and professional musician and the only part I don’t agree with is the part about opening your mouth a bit bigger. I definitely need to open my mouth larger to sing higher and more powerfully. Remembering to have a loosen jaw and tongue on the back of the teeth helps me get those bigger belt notes out! Maybe different types of voices require different mouth shapes. ❤

Wonderful Joseph! As someone who's studied a lot of voice science and vocal technique, I approve this video! everything is really nicely explained and truly helpful and organic
Im self-taught and i learnt how to sing at around 11 years old, im from northern england and the first songs i learnt to sing were all by american singers so singing in different accents i think it's helped me, some songs that helped me were:

Recess - Melanie Martinez
Super Bass - Nicki Minaj
Tag, You're It - Melanie Martinez
