    Well well well. When somebody brings out an overdrive pedal that isn’t an overdrive pedal… //doesn’t// call it an amp in a box when it’s probably the best one we’ve heard to date… //and// charges a pretty penny to behold its charms, you can expect us to sit up.
    So yes it’s complex.Yes it is amp like. And yes it’s an overdrive pedal for people whoo don’t like overdrive pedals. But is it the hands-down, bottom-up no-brainer purchase that we should all make?
    Nope. This puppy is dividing opinion good and proper.
    So what about us?

      Hey guys, did you watch the show? Did the pedal sound as you intended it too? I may be a luddite when it comes to tweaking ghost notes and negative feedback but I'm stumped at how you've voiced this pedal....it wasn't that the gain structure or breakup was bad it was the overall treble and presence voicing of the EQ it sounded muffled and one dimensional.....given my OE compressor is the greatest pedal Ive ever owned am I wrong to have expected more? Is it possible there was a fault with the pedal?

    • @Atttuner
      @Atttuner 6 років тому +1

      Roy Thomas Bøe ok just did that and that sounded like an entirely different pedal!!! Also a very slick review vid production. I love TPS cause it’s the best indicator of how I might engage with a unit straight out of the box. It’s obviously a complex unit so I’ll def take the time to trial it in person to make sure I can drive the spaceship and get Jays tone variety w my setup tx man

      I love classic cranked amps, but mot of the time I can't crank an amp. The thing the worries me about the Revival Drive is that the volume pot controls the gain, and there doesn't appear to be anything else to control the output level. Of course you have your amp controls, but I wonder how close the basic output is to unity? I know my Cali76 gives a large-ish volume boost with the output at 12 o'clock (with a Strat). I wonder if I'd be stuck with an amp volume so low its choked with a Revival Drive set to rock...perhaps Origin are happy to forego the world of moderate sound pressures? :-)

      The output knob right below the volume knob is what controls your overall level.

    I luurve the concept of this pedal - the versatility, the fact it's 'supposed-to-sound-like-an-amp', the fact it's all accessible from knobs & switches, all analogue, no midi, no digital, getting in the way, not a deep dive menu in sight, all 'hairy-arsed-amp-tones' - excellent!! - perfect for a luddite, guitar-cable-amp simpleton like me! Yes! :-) Btw Mick - I'm English & not based in USA

    Great video guys, I think between this and Pete Thorn’s video - amazing. I’m using an OxBox with a Lonestar Special and run the Revival into the front end. For recording it is brilliant, can’t hear the difference between the JTM45 and the above when recorded. Agree with Dan’s comments in the AC30, play with EQ2 a bit more and it gets closer. Thanks for the video guys!!!!

    Hi guys. How about a show on different classic fender amps, i.e. super, blackface, tweed, deluxe, princeton etc Be really interesting to hear core differences, a nod to famous users and also how different pedals react to each (e.g for main gain pedal food groups, Ts klon ocd etc what works for each amp variant)

    Hey Mick and Dan, another awesome show! Can’t thank you guys enough for all the knowledge you have imparted.
    If your show would have been around in the 90’s I can’t tell you how much money it would have saved me. Got rid of
    a lot of good gear simply because I didn’t know how to get the best out of it or use it in the right context. You have
    answered questions about tone I’ve been pondering for over 25 years!
    That being said, I do have this one search though that is still ongoing and it has baffled me. Maybe you can help. I don’t know if you familiar with Dwight Yoakam’s producer/ guitar player Pete Anderson or not, but there is a certain tone that he uses from time to time on Dwight’s recordings: It is subtle but unique, and I have never heard it on anything else. Some examples are: “Thousand Miles From Nowhere”, “ Things Change”, “Fast as You” , “ I don’t Need it Done” “Pocket of a Clown”.ect.There is reverb and definitely slap back but also has a sort of metallic tone to it. Since guys are really into echo and delay you might be able to spot it right off. It could be a certain type of reverb or echo instead of a special effect of some kind. I’ve tried all the conventional guitar effects that I know of with no success.
    Maybe you guys could do a show on some unusual guitar tones and how sometimes they are really not that unusual or some unknown crazy effect, but sometimes it’s just about knowing how to adjust what you already have in the right combinations.
    Anyway, Keep up the good work!
    Thanks, Alan Truckner

    Wow, what a beautiful sounding pedal. To me, that artifacting, those blemishes, imperfections, whatever you want to call it, those are what make valve amp overdrive so magical. As Leonard Cohen said, there are cracks in everything; that’s how the light gets in. Valve amps pushed hard are beautiful because they become imperfect and that’s where their personalities and beauty comes through. :) The guitar should get a chance to show its character and so should the amp. Man I wish I could afford this pedal to get some crazy tones!

    Great video guys, I found that using the blend control into my clean channel amp sound opens up all the lower gain fat, more tube screamer like sounds. You use the clean channel of your amp to tam and smooth the gain of this pedal. Then hit the blend override button for face melting solos.

    What Mick says at around 36:00 is so true. For a guitarist to cut through a mix, it's not about volume, it's about hitting the right frequencies so they pop out (or EQ'ing other things to make a space for it). So many players think that just being loud is enough. There are diminishing returns on this that kick in pretty quickly. Having an amp with good head room is great of course, but there's no point in dialling in something that is so loud that it overpowers everything else. And often times, the tone that sounds gnarly and rude by itself sounds awesome in a mix. The mix is the only important thing for me, unless you're a solo player of course.

      Thank you - glad you enjoyed it. If people are unhappy with videos it’s usually because we’ve offered an opinion that differs with their own. Or we flat got something wrong. Nothing very wrong in this video I don’t think, but the world of guitar tone is extremely subjective. People are dying to know what we think of stuff.... unless we’re not glowing about it. And then they can feel offended. Which is why we don’t touch stuff we don’t like. No winners in that situation. But this, we like this for what it sets out to do. Cheers!

      That Pedal Show I also really enjoyed this show, and I personally love when someone checking out a piece of gear has critical things to say about it. It’s one of the things I love about TPS. I know you guys will say (understandably in a nice way) “I don’t like this”, when something isn’t for you. Also, in regards to the Strymon reference, did you mean their Riverside (which is their “tube inspired drive sounds” pedal) rather than the Sunset (multiple overdrives in a pedal)?

    Every friday I get the same thought. There should be an official "that pedal forum". Hmmm. TPS is already an immense amount of work for us. A forum - full of hate, people arguing, being offensive etc etc etc (all forums have an element of this) - would totally do me in. For example, I can’t tell you the number of posts I’ve read on, let’s say, Marshall Plexis (but insert any gear you care to mention) where it’s absolutely obvious the writer has never owned or played one. And yet they’re quoting things and opinions they’ve read etc etc etc. It’s 90 per cent misinformation. Usually... among some absolutely stellar stuff I should say. We don’t have the stomach for the 90 per cent unfortunately. :0)

    Amazing!! Usually on headphones but today I had you plugged into the home stereo. What an episode to choose for that! Im a Tweed amp fan and that Revival Drive is everything I love about amp distortion.
    For not being fans of that sound and feel on an amp you guys both were playin great. Amazing tone! Favorite episode in a while.

    I have this pedal and I must say it takes a little time to figure it out. But well worth the effort. This thing just blows most of my other OD pedals off my board and on to Reverb. The Tones are to die for. It so much fun to play. Don’t knock it until you try it. Totally worth the money. I love love love this pedal.

    Really pleased someone finally did a truly in depth review of this pedal and it happens to be you guys. Well done chaps!
    As regards the pedal, it did not inspire me to part with £500.00. I can see a use for it as an alternative to amp modellers such as the helix and Amplifire if linked with a decent IR cab simulator though, especially in silent stage situations.

    Hi Guys. Great episode. The trick to using an Les Paul through a cranked Vintage Marshall sound is to roll your volume down a little off max and even turn the tone down on your bridge pickup. The Beano sound is a mix of both LP pickups, with guitar’s volume down around 7 or 8 on the bridge, and less on the neck. Could you revisit the Revival Drive with your 1987x, AC30 and Super Reverb? To see what the Revival Drive is like at getting cranked or slightly cranked amp sounds through those amps at quieter than cranked volume levels

    It’s ironic that this TPS and JHS Pedals shows comes out the same week; and you mentioned the Strymon Sunset. My Origin Effects Cali76 Deluxe is an always on pedal (feeding the delay); and while watching the video my thoughts were... Nope! I rather use my Strymon Sunset; and then you go and mention the Sunset. The thing about the Sunset (with the favorite switch) is I can “set & forget” six great, useful, and different tones and that is why it will never leave my board just like the ‘76. Yes it is DSP. I don’t care, it is DSP done right! And is the poster child for the letter N in F.U.N. that Josh mentions. Keep up the great show, and continue to sprinkle in these “outside your wheelhouse” shows every once in a while.

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  6 років тому

      Cheers Bleek. I should qualify it a bit. Mick here. A good AC30, JTm45, Tweed Deluxe etc... can be pure magic with the right guitar. To a point. But then it kinda goes over the top and becomes indistinct and gets nasty stuff. Also, it absolutely needs volume, and to get the power section breathing: it’s a physical experience as much as a sonic one. You take the physical bit away... just sounds scratchy to me.... until you get it in a mix and then it can potentially all change. I probably didn’t mean to be as binary as I sounded!

    • @bleeknoir
      @bleeknoir 6 років тому

      Binary? If that's binary, then so am I. Absolutely, I lose the clarity in chords and the leads don't seem to sing as much as fart out - or the character of the sound seems to suffer. I'm about to replace some Xotic Boosters, which I've used exclusively for years, because I didn't like the sound of them at higher gain settings. Replacing with the Vertex Clean Drive and Dynamic Distortion (Which was always a dirty word to me). Forever searching for ultimate clarity in very characterful sounds! Glad to know I'm not strictly alone ha!

    Hats off to Simon, I think he's created something unique on the market here. If you want that vintage amp sound and you're a gigging guitar player turning up to venues with a random backline this is a great option for an consistently awesome sounding fly rig. Great job Dan and Mick too for a proper in depth review from a player's standpoint.

    Always happy to see the jr’s make an appearance. Great sounding pedal. However, when it comes to guitars, amps or pedals I don’t have the mental capacity, patience, or dedication to play with more than 5-6 knobs. Anything more complicated than a non master volume amp is too much for me. God I’m so dumb.

    It’s like the Mark V of over drive pedals... you could tweak this thing forever, keep getting good sounds but the thought of knowing there might be another sound in there that I like more would drive me nuts personally which means I’d turn knobs more than play.

    Some nice tones and you have to applaud the thought and effort that have gone into this. From a marketing point of view though perhaps a pedal with just one of the sides and maybe the mid boost would have been a less daunting starting place? DIP switch could still enable tube vs silicon option. When are you going to have the Hamstead Odyssey on? Its become my main drive pedal but it can be difficult to dial in a tone. Keep up the good work guys. Thanks

    Great, great in depth review. I covet thine Collings, Mick - just wanted to get that out of the way.
    Question: After listening to the tracks, is the room experience vs. UA-cam experience CHALK AND CHEESE, or chalk and cheese?
    Suggestion: Try the pedal through the Fryette Power Station amp stage.
    Observation: The fact that such a tone shaping discrete pure analog circuit even exists in a small pedal blows my mind. This thing is a remarkable bit of engineering.
