How To Calm A Hyper Dog

  • I work with a lot of hyperactive dogs, and one of the most common reasons for hyperactivity is a need not being met.
    This is a complicated topic, with lots of different reasons and solutions. For a more in-depth look check out my article on Native Pet titled "How To Calm Down A Hyper Dog": nativepet.com/blogs/health/ho...
    Here are 3 tips that can help just about any hyperactive dog:
    • Increase mental enrichment by feeding your dog their breakfast or their dinner in a puzzle toy or a puzzle ball.
    • Ensure adequate and uninterrupted sleep. I like to give my anxious dogs a Native Pet Calm chew to help them settle in a quiet, dark, and comfortable space for sleep.
    • Increase physical activity. More specifically, physical activity that involves thinking using the brain and the body together can be much more satisfying for your dog.

    Great brain teaser for dogs and FREE: Get a towel and lay it flat on the ground, sprinkle a few dozen pieces of dog food across the towel, roll it up so it’s like a long burrito, then tie it in a knot (loose at first until your dog gets used to it, then you can tighten it a little more) my dog loves this he pushes it around and digs at it until he gets the knot out, and then unrolls it with his nose. Keeps him busy for about 5-10min.

      Does this work for super-chewers? I feel like my cattle dog/pit mix would just chew right through the center.

      @@EFergDindrane 😂 yes it does depend on the dog. My sisters pit bulls first instinct was to chew it but I believe she was able to slowly work him up to knotting it. She may have started with it rolled and showed him that it unfolds or something like that.

    Hand feeding combined with commands and marker (just a yes, I'm disorganised and would lose a clicker in an hour) really help my 13 month old gsd, along with a kong in his crate (peanut butter +kibble), and exploration sniff sessions in the back yard. Treadmill walks are essential on rainy and very cold days too and help tremendously too. It can feel really overwhelming when we are busy and still trying to provide for our pet at the level they deserve. I also started taking him along with me on every errand on cool days AND when I won't be away from the car for more than 5-10 minutes. The more I've exposed him to and allowed him to experience with me the better our training work has gone.

    My 8 month old German Sheppard is very hyper, I could definitely use a puzzle toy with a snack or treat of some kind to go with it. Any suggestions are much appreciated. She also jumps a lot when I or my parents come home and thats a habit I really want to change before too much longer.

      might be a little too late but keep your dog on a leash at all times! when your pup jumps simply step or pull down on the leash and give an “off” or “no” command! my doberman took a while to learn this

    With humans it's ADHD, but with animals it's a need not being met? All these solutions would work for a human as well. Not pills.

    I give my dog pills cuz those tips dont work for all dogs

    • @SaraOndrako
      @SaraOndrako  Рік тому +4

      That's why I say in the beginning that it's a complicated topic - there are many reasons for this that don't fit in a 60-second video or fit all dogs that are hyperactive. Pills won't "fix" the reason dogs are hyper either - they can be a great catalyst while you work through those behavior solutions, but the physical work with your dog is where you'll get the biggest return.

      So you have a hyper dog and you’ve started by implementing these with no results? Definitely atypical in my experience but every dog is different. I’d recommend reading my article on Native Pet that digs deeper into the topic and provides many more tips to address why your dog may be hyperactive. @@SaraOndrako These tips might work for a puppy but they certainly haven’t worked for our 5 year old rescued shih tzu. In fact these are simple tips that most dog owners know and are the first things to teach puppies. Although we haven’t tried the puzzle food bowl because she has an extreme overbite that makes normal eating difficult already, we spend hours entertaining her and encouraging her to settle down but she still won’t sleep at night and gnaws on herself from hyperactivity. She was prescribed Prozac which did solve these issues but caused other ones like tremors and no appetite, so we continue trying to figure out how to calm her down.

      @@lilyawood You need to work with a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant if you struggle to find solutions. interestingly enough - most dog owners are not familiar with the tips outlined in this video and/or do not put them into practice as intended, which is why I released the video. This is not in-depth, it's a quick 60-second video, and all hyperactivity problems cannot be solved in 60 seconds but many issues that are common can be greatly helped in normal dogs using these tips. I use them all of the time. Drugs can be a great catalyst in a lot of behavior cases but keep in mind, drugs don't fix behavior problems, behavior modification fixes behavior problems. I highly recommend you work with a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant or Veterinary Behaviorist that can put a plan together that meets the needs of your individual dog and you collectively. You can find a consultant at IAABC.org under the directory. Wishing you and your pup the best!
