Building a parts-caster with this pickup configuration is on my list of projects. I'm leaning towards Robbie Robertson's traditional 3-way tele wiring, but I might go for a 5-way switch we'll see. I want to do a walnut body, black pickguard, soft v neck, lollar vintage tweed pickups, tele knobs just like Robbie's.

Nice!! I have a 87 MIJ Squier, my very 1st guitar. Ive had it since new. It has the same neck stamps as this guitar. I modded it like crazy when i was a kid so nothing really orig except for the body and neck. I recently put a MIM Fender classic 60s replacement neck with 12" radius to bring it back to life. The old neck needs a lot of work and i hate the 7.25 radius.
Awesome guitars!! I love the 80s MIJ Squiers, they're basically the same quality as Fender in my opinion... And even some of the 90s MIK stuff too! Sounds like a beautiful guitar you've got. If you want to sell that old Squier neck ever give me a shout on Instagram!

That change was so much better, people are pretty silly to say not to do that personally never been a fan of a traditional strat pickup layout this is an amazing improvement !
I bought the Squier classic vibe 60s strat. Modified it. Fender 59 pickups, Mojotone blender wiring harness, CT’s pots, t filled compactor, switchcraft 5 way and jack, fender locking tuners, black pearl pickguaurd. Enjoyed moding it and like it better now than my USA strat. I also put a flame maple neck on it that I already had but neck that came on it was perfectly fine. Ty for ur comment. I have the same guitar I bought new in 1990, Japanese 57 reissue. Only mod is a single sized humbucker in the bridge. It was originally a slightly off-white colour, but has gone more yellow over time, but not as yellow as that one. The neck stamp is ST-57 and the body is STD-57, so I'm guessing yours has been put together from 2 guitars or maybe a different model? I'm sentimentally attached so won't be hacking any chunks out of it!
Your one sounds great 👌 and I think you're right or at least that was my thinking that this is a parts guitar but I'm assured by the seller it's not - who knows! And I don't care enough to find out haha

Back in the eighties everyone was chopping up strats to fit in humbuckers. Today it became a taboo! It’s your guitar, do whatever you want with it! Nothing wrong with that!
.I am a bit surprised that that old strat had no copper shielding . Even the older models of Fender , were typically shielded well. The cheap knock offs were the ones where the manufacturers typically cheaped out .
if a guitar is solely for my own playing, comfort & and preference, then I say, Modify. but if I have an eye towards selling it and letting the value go up then I say "Leave it Cherry".

@@Giant_Guitars That was the first time I played my '59 LP right before the AJ sig. Polar opposites. I'm really dig'n the neck. It's like no LesPaul neck I've ever felt? It's better than the asymetrical slim taper on the Moderns. Very fast.
Giant Guitars...There is no cutout on the body to access the truss rod bolt....so that body would have came with a neck that has a truss rod bolt on the neck...
You can do whatever you want with it...its your guitar and your money after all and as long as resale value means nothing to you then you are truly golden...i personally install super jumbo SS frets to my "strats",cut aluminum nuts,scallop the necks,new pickups and electronics etc etc etc the works.....i could do all the above to an actual strat but why destroy its resale value and lose a lot of money when i can use that money to buy good aftermarket parts to install to a way cheaper S object but hey....whatever drives you.

That was an Erbauer 1/2" router (screwfix own brand) my neighbour gifted it to me and it's surprisingly good! Yeah I relic'd this slightly later on before I sold it 🙂
Late to this video…and the fact you mentioned Robbie Robertson means that I was correct in thinking that was the vibe you were going for. (And, yes, I believe that Robbie’s Strats had three way switches in them…at least, the ones he used in “The Last Waltz”, anyway: one was a Copper-ish color the other was a Sunburst as the backup.)
Robbie said that he used the pickups in the configuration he did because he didn’t like the middle pickup in it’s usual location - and that, other than the modified pickguard to accommodate the new pickup positions, the Strats were also stock.
Yep Tele player originally and didn't like the middle pickup position for his playing style. It's very cool to see! My whole desire to work on guitars is firmly rooted in hot rodding and modifying so I love to see OGs modding stuff back in the day, Robbie's bronze Strat is probably one of my all time favourites!
Looks amazing! I did put another pickup so it has 4 single coils, 2 acting as a humbucker but i like this much more over mine! where did you get that pickguard?

The guitar was given to me by one of my bandmates, its an old Starcaster, i liked the sound of it but i wanted more, thats why i put the second coil on the bridge so i can simulate a humbucker running them in series.

Sorry I should have explained that, it's purely because of the shape of the pickup, it wouldn't fit together with the bridge one so tightly without flipping it
I think modifying old guitars is so much better than leaving them original because your sorta carrying on the instruments story , amazing build also!!!
I specially believe it makes more sense to modify it for someone to play it than to buy a 20th strat that plays identically to the other ones you have locked up in a room,
Instruments are medias of expression just as art supplies are, if they don’t serve the purpose they need to then they can adapt, just as any person could You ruin the value as a historic art piece but fundamentally that’s not what instruments are, unless you just want something to invest in I guess, in which case it kinda seems like a tool that’s never used
I'm a bit confused..I thought you were putting a hum bucker in at the bridge, I don't know anything about the Robbie Robertson guitar, so, does this work as before, like, you didn't rewire anything and moved the middle pick up to sit with the bridge. Silly question, but, does it change the sound of the guitar at all or is it purely an aesthetic thing? You kept the original five way switch in it? I apologise for the confusion on my part, like I say, I'm not really up on these things. The colour is lovely. Very unique as you rightly said. Cheers.
Yeah totally changes the sound of the guitar, as you move a pickup position that pickup will sound different and the strings vibrate differently along the guitar - so if you have 2 exactly the same pickups and put one in the bridge and one in the neck they will sound different. Compound that with the fact I also flipped the middle pickup the sound is totally different. Robbie Robertson used a 3 way, I kept the 5 way to give unique tones in positions 2 and 4! Courtnay Music now owns this and plays it on stream 3 times a week!

I think modifying old guitars is so much better than leaving them original because your sorta carrying on the instruments story , amazing build also!!!

I specially believe it makes more sense to modify it for someone to play it than to buy a 20th strat that plays identically to the other ones you have locked up in a room,

Instruments are medias of expression just as art supplies are, if they don’t serve the purpose they need to then they can adapt, just as any person could
You ruin the value as a historic art piece but fundamentally that’s not what instruments are, unless you just want something to invest in I guess, in which case it kinda seems like a tool that’s never used

I'm a bit confused..I thought you were putting a hum bucker in at the bridge, I don't know anything about the Robbie Robertson guitar, so, does this work as before, like, you didn't rewire anything and moved the middle pick up to sit with the bridge. Silly question, but, does it change the sound of the guitar at all or is it purely an aesthetic thing? You kept the original five way switch in it? I apologise for the confusion on my part, like I say, I'm not really up on these things. The colour is lovely. Very unique as you rightly said. Cheers.
Yeah totally changes the sound of the guitar, as you move a pickup position that pickup will sound different and the strings vibrate differently along the guitar - so if you have 2 exactly the same pickups and put one in the bridge and one in the neck they will sound different. Compound that with the fact I also flipped the middle pickup the sound is totally different. Robbie Robertson used a 3 way, I kept the 5 way to give unique tones in positions 2 and 4! Courtnay Music now owns this and plays it on stream 3 times a week!
