Very interesting. This song was originally recorded by Steve in 1969 in 3/4 time. Then Iain Matthews rearranged it in 4/4 time. It is Iain's version that The Eagles made famous. This live recording by Steve Young (RIP) starts in 3/4 and then switches to 4/4 when it speeds up at about the 1:30 mark. I have never heard Steve perform it in 4/4 time either live or as a recorded version. It works well. Steve - a truly under appreciated songwriter. If you are not familiar with some of his other stuff, look it up and give it a try.
I first heard this by the Eagles, then by Megan Patrick $ the Washboard Union and never knew it was a masterpiece by Steve Young. He was a rebel and a genius and not too recognized. I can not stop listening to this song, it’s awsome. RIP Steve Young, I wish I had a chance to meet and see u.
I saw Steve once in Edmonton, Alberta, 9 years later, in 1994. He played a solo gig with a 12-string guitar. It blew me away. It remains one of my favorite concerts ever. It was nice chatting with him after the show. I was so sad to hear he passed away not long ago. Even sadder to find out that almost no one mentioned it. To me Steve Young had one of the greatest voices in country/folk music. I cherish all of his albums! "Seven Bridges Road" is a timeless classic on the same level as the first two Band albums.
This man is one of the pioneers of country rock and the outlaw country movement. Crazy that he’s not well known. Only real music fans know. Waylon Jennings covered two of his songs. That became staples on Waylon’s set. Rip mr young.
Waylon told anyone who would listen that Steve Young might have the best voice and country music. That’s saying something coming from a guy like Waylon Jennings who really might’ve had the best voice and country music at that time.
You know most of the underrated comments on UA-cam I normally disagree with but Steve Young does seem to have been underrated by someone in charge as he’s as good as anyone of the big outlaw names imo
Steve truly lived the life of a troubadour. Back in the day I was fortunate enough to have coffee and about a 40 minute conversation with him before a show in Fremont, Michigan. He was such a genuine human. We talked about fingerpicking (he used hardened fingernails, I use fingertips), his love of the Hispanic culture and how he drove from gig to gig going from Nashville to California or vice versa. He even hung out with my friends and I after the show. He is missed.
Steve Young was the only writer on this song so if he had a good publishing deal he made seven cents on every Eagles LP/CD sold in the greatest hits and that live package. The hits by the Eagles is one of the best selling of any music ever so think he did well. Used to have deep "bottomless lake" type conversations with him driving him to shows in Michigan. Writing a book right now and can sense him around pushing me to keep going as it is a subject we both enjoyed talking about...the Nunne'hi. Steve Young was not the kind to RIP...too many people to help! He really wanted to be a social worker but loved playing live under his own terms and nobody else.
people covered this song cause it's a good song cause everyone has a road they're on right now! Everyone listening is on the road right now! We're here.
" Renegade Picker" maybe the greatest record ever recorded. Obviously, thanks to Steve Young but also, produced by Roy Dea and he did a magnificent job.
I'm not very familiar with Mr. Young, but always loved the Eagles version of this song. This version makes me think of Gordon Lightfoot. I think Gordon would've sang it this way. I look forward to listening to more Steve Young!
I’d honest to God rather hear THIS version! What a talented creator & artist! I feel embarrassed that I didn’t know he wrote this song or the story behind it. There is nothing like hearing a song straight from the source…the meaning/feelings that created it really come through…purely & authentically. I can just feel it in my soul.💚 Thank You for sharing!
Very interesting my first time hearing the original version. Much credit to Mr. Young for riding this wonderful song of course popular consensus would be that the Eagles version is much better to which I agree but then again we’re talking about the Eagles man so that’s not an unsold at all. It’s a major major compliment that they took on this song, and I hope he made a fortune from it very well written song
Are you serious? Go to the version the Eagles did in Seattle live. Think it was done in 1977 or 76. Thr harmony is amazing. They used to open their concerts with this starting in an acapella opening!!
@@1JUSTPASSINGTHROUGHThey are starting their concerts with this song in 2024. I've been fortunate to sit in the 2nd row. Wish I could record and post, as I often do, but that's not possible with Eagles' shows. It would get me a copyright strike, then get taken down.
Yes, their version appeared out of nowhere in every way except that one way where they lifted the arrangement from Iain Matthews and Michael Nesmith from a few years earlier.
👆Thanks to your post☝️I went & listened to his original version & FREAKKNG LOVED IT! …even MORE than this by far! That video didn’t allow comments so I’m leaving one here to say that if you’re like me & didn’t know he wrote this let alone sang it himself…ya HAVE to go check it out! 🤩⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I am ashamed that I always thought Glenn Frey wrote this song. I never checked the provenance of it. Mr. Young's version is different than the Eagles' and more melodic. However, I prefer the Eagles version because of the harmonic a capella performer at the beginning and end of the song.

This is the first time I’ve ever heard Steve Young sing. You can tell 7 Bridges Road was his baby. What an amazing version!
His song classic for ever
What a singer and what a great song. This song was truly Steve Young's baby. He sang it like no other.
Genuinely one of the great voices and song writers. I'm always genuiely taken away by hearing this man sing. Rest in peace.

The song's been covered by many but still belongs right here where it came from - nobody will ever do it better than Steve Young.

This is by far my favorite version of all time. The guitar work, the melodic timbre. This is exactly how this song is supposed to sound imho
@ Teresa, well he wrote it!
Eh. I like the barbershop sound the Eagles did more. Either way it's a fantastic song.
Never heard about Steve Young before I am ashamed to admit!! He has a wonderful voice and this is a great performance of his original song!
Never knew this song was his, loved hearing him perform it.
Makes me cry every time
Steve was the total package..world class vocals, super good rhythm player ,decent picker and awesome writer.
Rip.
Decent picker? I haven't seen better live , maybe Isaac Guillory
Beautiful man, beautiful voice and talent!

Saw Steve in gainesville fl
Around 76-77, played 12 string solo. Small venue great show.
I was privileged to call Steve’s wife Terrye my friend for a couple years before her death; she was a great lady.
I became friends with her also. She was brilliant and a wonderful person.

Everyone who ever read the credits of songs knew Steve Young wrote the words and music for this song...
It was never hidden. :)
God bless you, Steve Young.
Listening to Steve before the Eagles. Once Bernie and Randy left I only liked Timothy.

The epitome of Southern Country Soul Music. His son Jubal is a chip off of the old block. Check it out.

I first heard Rita Coolidge sing this song.
I’m used to the Joan Baez version, but wow, this is gorgeous
Like the Dude, I fucking hate the Eagles, man. That makes me loving this song when performed by Young (I heard the Eagles ver 1st) so special

The best dang songwriters eminate from the U.S. South. With much credit due to the influence of enslaved African-Americans and their offspring.
