I love them for many reasons, mostly because they serve as a virtual log of your gaming history. I’d love to be able to go back and see what I accomplished and when on NES games. The trick is not to fall in to the trap of being a completionist.
And developers don't know how to set the tone right either. It is either "congratulations you opened the door right in front of you at the start by pressing 1 button on the controller" achievement to "collect all such and such with a droprate of 0.0001 from bullet sponge bosses on the hardest difficulty within 14 minutes without ever getting hit" achievements.
I am kind of in the middle. I always look up a guide before playing to see howr hard the platinum is. But if I see that a plat is to long or to hard to get, I just play the game how I want & move on. So there are times where I only get 30% of the trophies for a game or the plat or anything in between. I just enjoy trophies, regardless of the plat or not
Im not addicted but i do really enjoy them. I would hate if they take them away, it helps give me a sense of accomplishment. And i can look back and see all the games i beat.
I use to be big into achievement hunting. I found myself playing absolutely terrible games just for the achievements, eventually that just killed it for me. Now I don't really even worry about achievements. It's a lot more fun that way.
I'm an unabashed Nintendo fanboy, but I really love their statement on why they don't have trophies or achievements. It boiled down to "playing the game should be its own reward" and that's how I feel. Another related point from Guillermo del Toro, who loves RPGs but tends not to finish them. His comment was along the lines of "when I stop having fun, I stop playing and move on". I do like when a game has a 100% score, or gives you in-game hints to new things to try. I recently loved Little Kitty, Big City, the game was easy to finish, but the in-game quests gave you things to try that you might not have otherwise. But the objective should be to play the game you love for its own sake, not to play the game to show off how many games you have played.
I have circled back and find it’s more fun jumping in blind and see what trophies unlock, then if I REALLY want to I’ll get a guide and get more, or I just move on.
As someone that mostly collects for PS2 I’m really sad there’s no trophy feature, because I really do love getting platinum trophies. Also it was a pleasure meeting you at CORGS! I was the guy that was talking about a full capcom ps2 collection. I didn’t mention to you there but your ps2 collection video was the biggest inspiration to get into collecting!
Thanks for coming to say hello! It was really nice meeting you, too. I hope you have some good luck finishing off the set. Haunting Ground is a tough one!
You truly hit the nail on the head. Now that we’ve all tasted the dopamine rush that are trophy’s/achievements we have such a hard time enjoying games that don’t have them as all. It’s so influential that retro achievements are a thing for games that never had them to begin with. Sometimes I miss the days when it was just me and my console and to show friends my progress other than just telling them, they either came over or I had to bring my memory card to their house. Once I started playing online games and was introduced to achievements on the 360 my whole world got turned upside down. I look at it nowadays as I’m trying to get my moneys worth or squeeze every last drop of enjoyment I can out of a game. I know there are some games I’ve played I may have gave up on but because I wanted those platinum trophies or the 1000+ gamerscore I kept on keeping on. A lot of my friends could care less but to me I enjoy collecting them and showing them off. It’s like battle scars that go along with my gaming war stories lols.
You make some really good points. I always have fantasies about my kids going through my achievement list once I'm gone and seeing all the things I did. 😅
Honestly online/multiplayer achievements turn me off hunting as opposed to the ball busters like "beat the 20hr game on hardest difficulty without taking damage once"
Interesting video. I never bought or avoided games because of the trophy difficulty since “this looks fun” was always my number one priority but I definitely let it spoil a few games for me. Spoilers either on the trophies themselves or the guides are real. I also played several either in way I wouldn’t have chosen personally or past the point of enjoyment (or targeting something that made it unenjoyable). These days I mostly ignore them. Kids and work soak up too much time and I have to play as an escape just to have fun. About the only thing I do before playing now is check the “missable” ones before I start. Difficulty is another one I check but I tend to select the hardest mode no matter what. That being said, I really liked a couple of the takes in the comments. Trophies/achievements are great as a catalogue of your gaming history and they’re really nice when they give you new or creative ways to re-play a game you’re itching to spend more time with as long as you don’t fall into the completionist trap. Sorry for the long comment; like I said, it’s a worthwhile reflection for many gamers.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment! Kids, work, and having a house definitely eat up a ton of time. So, gaming is always a luxury. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and delve into the comments 😁
It's not ruined at all. If you only buy those shovelware garbage games yes. But if you play what you like and get the trophies/achievements, that's what gaming is all about. I usually play a game through without worrying about the trophies. When I'm finished, I look at the trophy list and if it's not too ridiculous, I'll try to platinum it. If I don't, no big deal.
Great Video. I kind of look at trophies a little differently. When I'm playing a game that I really like and plan on completing it, at about the halfway point, I'll glance at them, and when I'm near completion, I see what I've done and think if the trophies are obtainable, if not, then I'll just plan on finishing the game, but not fully complete w the trophies. For instance, the Newest Ratchet & Clank, I looked at the trophies and said, yep, I can do this.. Had a blast getting them. Thanks again RNG for the vid.
I appreciate the trophy/achievement lists existing as I've had some great fun with games I otherwise wouldn't have like in Resident Evil 5, but I've never let them direct how I play a game. My process has always been to play the game organically & if I really enjoy it but want more then look at my outstanding trophies & see if they're worth my time to get all the remaining ones. Sometimes I spend a ton more time with a game & it adds to the experience, but more often I see what's left & move on because the value of getting them doesn't outweigh the experience of playing another game. My closest gaming buddy (our group played on Tuesdays each week) has been off work for 4 years now from a combination of disability & having low expenses. He's become worse in regards to 100% completing games now than he was before, but that's mostly due to having the available free time to spend it doing those tasks. It doesn't help that trophies = psn money now.
That's a great way to do it! But it sucks when there is a missable achievement you didn't even know existed 40 hours into a game. Are you going to go back and put another 40 hours into that game for just that?
@@RNGGamerYT short answer is, nope. Those games I just write off as 1 time experiences like most games I play, or if I'm lucky my buddy will let me know in advance so I don't miss it.
I usually do my first playthrough of a game blind. Then if i really enjoyed it and wanna spend time with it, i will go for the trophies. Sometimes, if it requires another playthrough and is a long game, i come back to it a year later or so.
Wow that really sucks! Glad I never got into that. My problem is that I keep playing my favorites too much and don’t expand enough into the rest of the backlog (Looking at you Skyrim) looking for more potential favorites.
@@RNGGamerYTI played some games over and over. It's nothing wrong with that. I got so good that I play SOR2 over and over. I use different methods to beat most bosses without having to lose life energy. On Helldiver 1, I play constantly even on max level 5 years ago. I play different loadouts. Different weapons. ??? Loadout. and etc. Even soloing the game out. And do you know what, I didn't get platinum on it. I don't care. Some gamers on it reach max level 50 but struggle to play level 15. They don't even know what are good loadouts and how to use it strategically.
I've been trophy hunting since the beginning. I make sure the games I pick to play I will enjoy and commit myself to. So far I've had 95/95 100% games in a row. Currently working on my next 5 titles to bring me to 100 100% games on PSN
Thank you for making this video. I play a lot of Boomer Shooters so most of the achievements I get simply by completing the game. There's always a few that are crazy challenges that I ignore. But then I went back to Blood Fresh Supply and tried the hardest challenge and it forced me to be more cautious, look for more secrets, conserve resources, etc. You absolutely nailed it with this video, thoughtful challenges for achievements teach you to be a better gamer where as pointless wild goose chases I think are a ploy to get people to spend more time on games they ordinarily wouldn't replay. Especially if prospective buyers can see how much time other users spend playing and think they're getting a lot of hours worth of entertainment for their money. It is absolutely about the journey, well put, sir!
Thank you so much for your kind words! They mean the world to me. I'm so glad you had a moment of clarity and learned to appreciate the journey again 😄
It can be extremely exhausting. You should read some of the replies of what big hunters do to get all of their achievements 😅 This comments section has been insane.
Back in the 90's it was called unlockables. You would beat a game to see a different ending, get unlimited ammo for guns or you would get extra levels in games. 1st game that I played that had unlockables was Sonic 3. If you didn't get all the Chaos emeralds (which hardly anyone did back in the day), you can replay the bonus stages over & over until you got them all. This unlocks a secret boss battle where you fight Robotnik in space as Super Sonic. Then once you beat him you get this awesome ending. Also it doesn't take a lot of your time.
I only ever platinumed one game on PS4. Valkyria Chronicles 4 and only because I realised I was so close after finishing the game, I just thought well, I may as well finish it off but generally they don't phase me much at all.
This is the same approach I use as well. If after going through the primary experience, I am like a few achievements away from the completion, then I'm likely to just go ahead and finish it up. If however, the main game leaves me with 20% of the achievements, them I'm just moving on. Especially if multiple playthroughs are required. The backlog is just too big to allow playing through the same game multiple times from start to finish
This right here is why I curate what I play. I love completing games the way the developers intended, and I love good quality games and challenges. Avoiding scivvy and cheap game-pass releases and the like is a big part in maintaining the appeal, because then you're in it for the game, not the numbers on your profile
I mostly agree with you about the achievement part. But, curating your collection completely can lead you down a road where you get stuck playing the same types of games over and over without ever branching out. It's one of the reasons I do the whole random game thing. Some of the best games I've ever played were selected for me and weren't something I would have ever picked to play
I find the best balance is to not actively try for trophies on a first playthrough, but then go back to it after completion to try and get most of the trophies that aren't stupidly difficult to get, like beating the game on hardest difficulty in a certain time without getting hit, or multiplayer trophies, I really hate them, it's just an excuse to play parts of an already finished game again for me, I'm just not fussed about getting all of them
What I have found with regarding achievements is that if they are plausible for me to get, then my gameplay shifts from having fun in the game and instead turns to a checklist for me to complete. I like to see that 100% completion symbol by my games, but none of my gaming memories are really about achievements. So I'd say that they have made my gaming experience worse. I'm working on changing my mindset regarding achievements and just focus on, you know, playing the game.
Super interesting video for me. As someone that knows basically nothing about achievements on games, I was surprised by some of this. Great video brother!
When they first came out I would try to get full gamer score and I did actually rent easy titles to raise the number. I had a pretty big score compared to most people at one point. Never used the road map approach though. Nowadays I am a father of two and my money is less available as it once was so I buy a game and play it without looking at the trophies but then once completed I may try and then get a full score to make my money and game last longer without spoiling the game the first time round.
That's the way to do it! I hate achievements you can miss. If you're able to go back and get them at any time, it makes it a lot more fun to play the game without having to worry!
Biggest reason : plat hunting has BECOME famous in recent years so devs intentionally implement things that forces u to do "too many collectible multiple play through on game that has zero replayability fun wise too much grind forces u to put more time in game by design in sake of plat"
@@RNGGamerYT perfect example is ubisoft open world game for collectible then multiple playthrough ex: the quarry gotta do atleast 3-4 playstation with no cutscene skipping and like a dragon final dungeon gold trophy must do 6-8 hour grind in the best grind method of the game not avoidable either
Biggest draw of achievements to me is seeing the date attached to them. Not necessarily because I remember that exact moment, but more of a "Hmm.. can't believe that was 10 years ago" type feeling. We've all got those games we got into, never finished, then decide to go back go at a later date. Gaming memories often tend to be a blur and it's easy to lose track of the passage of time.
I used to be. Was top 50 in the world for playstation for many years many years ago. But just got burnt out. I still hunt for them, but I don't go for them like I used to. But honestly, trophies added replayability to games and gave games extra sales. So overall it was great. I even wrote the guide for stormrise. Sadly the website i wrote it for went belly up. The other ones out there are damn near clone copies of mine lol.
Wow! That's an incredible background and is very impressive. I never was ranked that high, but I was top 1% on Xbox for a while. Glad to hear that we feel similarly 😄
@@RNGGamerYT ya man. It was a blast when I used to do it. Bought so many good and bad games, have some impossible to get ones, extremely rare ones, etc. But sadly I'll admit, and I'm not proud of it..... I do have the Hannah Montana platinum 😆. And I really need to think of something to say 😆.... that ending kills me
Playing a game the way you will genuinely get the most enjoyment out of it is generally the best way to go about it. I might occasionally seek out an achievement or trophy on a whim, but it isn't something that I do regularly. However, there was a case where I got every achievement in a game without deliberately trying to get any of them. When I was playing Soul Hackers 2 on Steam, the achievements were generally things I normally do in an SMT game like playing on the highest difficulty setting and fusing a Pixie with the Megidolaon skill as a tribute to the Super Pixie from SMT III: Nocturne. 😆
I use to be a trophy hunter but over time I realised it sucks the fun out of gaming. Nowadays I only go for 100% completion / all trophies or achievements for games I truly respect. Find it's the best way otherwise your pastime starts feeling like a chore.
Same, only my fav games get the 100%. And even then if it's a slog I won't, like Monster Hunter World Iceborne adding some rng capture creatures as well as lame ass sidequests. I've 93/100 achievements and I just don't care to get em all because the ones I'm missing are just not fun or part of the actual normal gameplay
Great stuff! I never much cared for trophies or achievements. Got most of them in Doom 2016 and Eternal but just as a way to extend the game after beating campaign. If I unlocked one on another game it was just icing.
This video was me 15 years ago. Now, first time around I go in blind, Trophy/Achievement notifications OFF and just play through the game. If I want to play the game again, I'll take a look at the Trophies/Achievements and get the ones that seem fun or interesting (no grinding or collectibles).
I used to be an adventurer like you, then i took an arrow in the knee, but.... took the time to write down all pros and cons i could think of. Pros: + It gives longevity to games you normally wouldn't play anymore after finishing it + It challenges you to get better at a game + It's a bit of a logbook where you keep track of all the games you played and all the things you have achieved over the years. + It can be used as an extra layer of competition with your friends + It makes you play games you normally wouldn't play + It gives extra purpose to gaming + It makes you experience a game on an entirely different level. + It can give a sense of purpose + It can make you proud to see your super high trophy score. Cons: + Can be tedious to 100% a game + Can make you forget to enjoy a game + Games without achievements become irrelevant + Can be very addictive Final verdict: As a former super fanatical trophy hunter hunter and self admitted trophy junky, I really had to adjust my mindset to being able to enjoy games again without trophies (for example) games on the Switch. My addiction became rather intense. So intense i didn't enjoy playing games without being rewarded with trophies anymore. In the end trophies were pretty much all that mattered and before starting a new game, i checked all the trophies beforehand and made a game plan accordingly, just to smash them all out as fast as possible. I often realised this wasn't how gaming was intended, then again, i still enjoyed the games, just in a different way. Then i became a father and had less and less time to trophy hunt. It slowly became a thing of the past. Especially since the Switch became the main source of entertainment for my kids and myself. I still play my beloved ps3/ps4 these days but somehow the need for trophy hunting isn't there anymore. However, occasionally I do go through my long list of achievements/trophies and look back at the log with great pleasure. Finishing Cod mw's last level on Veteran difficulty. Clearing a 2 floor airplane filled with bad guys that aim with surgical precision, and 1 bullet is all it takes to die...ahhh the shere frustration, cursing the world after my 100th failed attempt, it all comes back to me by simply looking at the hard earned 100%. It still makes me proud. Remembering i finished Splinter cell double agent on hard difficulty, without firing a single shot throughout the entire game and only being allowed to use a knife...now that took pure dedication.. nothing less than astonishing really.. I would never ever even contemplate doing such things without the trophies...so in a sense it elevated me to greater heights. But it also took me through deep dark valleys to achieve them. In the end, i think games should have trophies, it gives an extra dimension to gaming. One could compare it to alcohol, sure it brings misery to some, but a lot of fun to others. Some can't handle it, but most can. Let the option be there. Let not the developer decide how we should enjoy a game but we tge gamers ourselves decide if we just wants to focus on the game or have all those extra layers of fun and misery alike. For me those days are long gone now and i enjoy gaming again without trophies, but look back at it with great pride. My skills, willpower and insanity, all these little or big moments documented for eternity. In that sense my trophy list is a time capsule, a digital reminder of what i'm capable off. For Good and for worse. Amen.
Thank you for the detailed comment. I wish I had time to reply to every single point, but the youtube studio app limits the lines I text I can see when I reply. Just know I read your entire comment and liked how you broke it down into the pros and cons as well as sharing your experiences.
Got recently back into hunting on steam... honestly its the most fun for me when I just don't think about it, I honestly try to not even look at achievement before my first playthrough (unless achievement are directly tied to progression in like a roguelike, but that more genre specific)
I recently started playing a title and then deciding whether to complete it or not and I saw myself in several of the things you said in the video including not starting a game for the achievements. Now that I have much less time I have started to give much less importance to completing games also due to the countless games created specifically for gamerscore. I have exceeded 500,000 gamerscore and I am satisfied. Nice video. PS: right now I'm completing Ninety-Nine Nights even though it's old I liked it
Really interesting video and I for one love that you did something a bit different. I have never been a trophy hunter myself and I never really understood the mentality but hearing you explain it, I can see how someone would be corrupted down that rabbit hole. My only experience with trophy hunters and achievement people are ones that basically told me if I wasn't doing it that way I was doing it wrong. I probably could have went down that rabbit hole myself if I got into gaming earlier so just another reason I'm thankful I didn't LOL. I will basically play a game to completion and do as many side quests and trophies and achievements until I feel complete and not the other way around. I do however like to go for the good ending but mostly because I almost never play a game twice. My toxic trait is playing a game I don't like once I start it. The way I see it is if I bought it and spent money on it then I need to take the time to play it and worry about how much I hated it later 😂😂
Thanks for watching the video! I was trying out several new things... including hiring a thumbnail artist. It's probably good that you didn't get sucked down the achievement hole because it sure eats up a lot of time 🤣 I have the same issue as you about sticking with a game even when I'm not having a good time
@@lionfire3359 I understand the sentiment but I think some games are more enjoyable to some than others. Just depends on your taste and your preference.
What broke me was Halo 4 and the first DLC "stomp 20 enemies with the Mantis". Not only did you have to compete against the opposing team to get in the slow moving piece of crap, you had to fight against teammates too. I saw my KDR drop from 1.25 to 0.75 because of that and it turned me off both trophy hunting AND online gaming.
I've always just got the achievements on the games I wanted to see to the end, my proudest achievements are 100%ing The Witcher 3 (including DLC) and Dark Souls 1. My biggest compliant is when a developer makes an achievement hard to obtain but then you find the actual achievement is bugged! If you're going to set achievements please ensure, once the requirement is met, it will actually 'pop'.
Yeah I used to care and then it just got to be too much, I agree with your points and experience here. When I was in high school I felt like it was more worth my time but as I grew up into adulthood I realized it was silly and stopped caring. Occasionally I'll still go for easy achivements in games I'm already playing though, but hardly ever bother to 100% these days.
Pretty much followed the exact same path. In some ways it forced me to try games I never would have, but it also made me stick with trash games I shouldn't have. Gears3 "Seriously 3.0" cured me of achievement hunting. I knew I could never dedicate that much time for 1 achievement. I still love achievements, but these days I'm okay missing most of them and just enjoying the game.
I think it really depends on if you actually like what youre doing or not. Personally I love the process of looking up guides, sorting achievements into sheets and anticipating the difficult ones, going through and getting good (plus I only 100% games i actually enjoy). If it's something youre not having fun doing it then it would only make sense to not do that
The first "achievement" that I ever got was on a Steam game but I don't remember which one. I glanced at the lower right-hand corner of the screen when it popped up and all I could think was "okay... cool I guess..." Then another one popped up, and another, and another, and pretty soon I was thinking to myself "this is fun." When I was done playing I brought up the game page on Steam and I saw a listing of "achievements" and I opened it up and started reading them. At one point I was thinking "no way am I going to get all these," so I just kept on playing the game like normal. When I got my PS4 I started noticing "trophies." When I get a new game I look at the list and if it's something I think I can to, I go for it. If some of them look ridiculous I just say "screw it," play the game and whatever "trophies" I get along the way are inconsequntial. For example, Rainbow Cotton came out a couple weeks ago and there's a "trophy" for beating the game with one life... SCREW IT, move on, just play the game.
I played Skyrim, Oblivion, Fallouts, Bioshocks, and tons of FPS games plus Souls games and Blizzard games dozens of times per game before making online profiles. Now I like collecting points and trophies but its not completely mandatory. So I only replay game for points when and if I feel like it.
I'm one of the people that like to trophy hunt, and used to get those "trash games" with really easy Platinum's but after awhile after doing quite a bit of that, I became bored of just doing super easy games. I still am addicted to trophies but I now only go for the trophies in games I truly enjoy playing. That doesn't mean I won't play any easy games, I just have to like the game first and foremost. PS - and Yes there IS a trophy for doing those timed missions in Control.
i've been collecting trophies since 2015 and i have 209 platinums. i really sometimes skipped a game because of the trophy requirements but lately i kinda gave up on that "perfect" trophy list with everything being 100% and just play the games i want to play. and ofc i still platinum games but only the ones i really want to
I'm almost at 275k. I remember seeing some guy who was on the way to a million, but I couldn't understand how he was getting achievements on games that were like tens or hundreds of hours. I still like going for them, but I try to play through a game first on my own. I usually peek to see if there are missable achievements because I don't want to play certain games twice. My backlog has to be close to 1500 games, maybe more, lol.
Not really a trophy hunter but the 2019 Spiderman game came close to making me one. I spent hours attempting to platinum it and I may just try again once I get Spiderman 2.
I can't get enough of achievements and trophies. I kind of think it's a bit sad, cuz it makes me play one game for so long until I can get into a new one. So because of it I have a big backlog too. Sometimes I wonder if it's worth it. But also.... it can be so much fun! Biggest issue is the online only games. Can be hard to find people to play with. Though I am thinking about just playing through a game and don't care about the trophies, and then I can move on to another game quicker, and just maybe hunt for them later. I don't know, haha
Hey just wanted to comment really like your content stay classy! Also achievement hunting feels pointless to me but I’m also have a video game backlog so who am I to say anything haha
I only 100% the games I love. And I might stop if it's too much of a grind or chore. I like the way steam handles achievements and profiles since you can display your 100% games as well as specific achievements so it feels a little more important than on consoles, they allow you to display your fav games
For me it depends on the game. There are games on Steam I try to get all achievements if I happen to notice I have more than half of them unlocked by the time I reach the end credits or, in the case of open-ended games, close to being burnt out.
I used to do the same almost. I did avatar also the easiest 1000 gamer score ever. There is a turtles game that's almost as easy to get the 1000. The halo one was hard. Mile high club in COD modern warfare was one of the hardest.
I never did the Mile High Club achievement because I didn't actually play the game until a couple of years ago. Glad you hear you achieved the impossible 🤣
There are a plethora of “developers” on Xbox that release shell games using mainly unreal elements that can be completed in like 5 mins or less. These games balloon up to 4000-5000g over time. It’s a real divisive topic in the achieving hunting community right now. I one play games for achievements so my hobby is very niche
I absolutely love achievement hunting. However I play the game to enjoy it at first. Then i go for round 2, 3 or 4 so i can get achievements without caring about the game.
The first achievement I ever noticed was "Worst Day-Shift Manager Ever" which pops in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed after you kill 12 stormtroopers while playing as Darth Vader in the prologue. While I thought that was pretty hilarious, the first game to make me want all of the achievements was Red Dead Redemption because the game was so good I wanted them on principle. But that slowly lead to achievement hunting... My favorite kind of achievements are the ones found in stealth games like Dishonored or Deus Ex where there's one where you have to get through the game killing no one except bosses and another for never been seen. My least favorite are difficulty-related achievements and I oftentimes won't complete a game that has them if I didn't like the game enough and the ones I do usually have some kind of NG+ option for the higher difficulties. Obviously the worst kinds of achievements are the unobtainables that never pop no matter what you do and the worst of those are the ones that are broken day 1. Some of them never get fixed. If I really don't like the game and/or the task the achievement wants me to perform, I won't bother with the achievement. Like Outward, which I despised and will never return to after 1 achievement, or speed run achievements which I tend to skip. Having said that I still have 436 total completions and tend to complete as much as I can if I play a game even if hardcore hunting has lost its shine for me.
That day- shift manager achievement is hilarious! That's a lot of completed games on your end! It's probably more than double what I have 🤣 My favorite kind of achievements are just for story completion 😅
I think the big problem with many of them is amount that get discontinued/unobtainable because of server closures. Bad Company 2 for example has 42 unobtainable. The next is the amount of shovelware with 20-30 minute completions. It’s taken away any real accomplishment.
I remember the Halo one. I use to be 100% addicted as well and would buy games only on PlayStation or Xbox and ignore Nintendo. These days, I only go for trophies on games that have earned the effort from me. I use it as a sign of respect to the developer these days.
I have about 10 platinum trophies over PS3/PS4/PS5. What makes me go after Platinums are if I think a game is absolutely amazing. Being a huge Metal Gear fan, I have all of those platinums. Actually Metal Gear Solid 4 was one of the most difficult platinums on PS3 but I got that one. If I think a game is amazing, I try for a platinum. Most recently I got platinum trophies on Chernobylite and Terminator Resistance because those games were absolutely amazing! It's my way of honoring such an awesome game and also getting the most play out of games I love so much
I’ll go for them on some games if i decide to dedicate the time or just finish the story and then move onto something else. But i automatically decide not to go for them if they have multiplayer trophies. Those can just be too much of a grind or headache
Control is a superb game, by the way. Enjoy the Ashtray Maze. One of my favorite gaming sequences. The platinum is quite straightforward; you should definitely go for it.
Back on the 360 I didn't care about achievements, I have so many games from back then that are sitting at 0-3%. I only bothered to get 100% on games I really enjoyed, like they were in my top 10 games back then. When I got a PS4 it started off the same, but two things changed. The first is I started playing more games that I enjoyed and that had trophies I enjoyed getting. Then my friend posed a challenge, a no defined end point Platinum trophy competition. I'm now sitting at 148 Platinums since then. I've played some games I truly hated and stuck with them for tens of hours just to Platinum them. Now a days I only 100% games that I'm enjoying. If I don't I strive to get 30%+ of the trophies/achievements just because I feel getting that much means I've checked out a decent amount of the game
I'm a big achievement/trophy hunter, but I play through a game once fully before I even look at a step-by-step guide other then seeing if, and only if, there is some missable ach/tro in a single playthrough type thing (if we have chapter select to get them, I don't care). Like example, As Dusk Falls (a chose your own adventure game), I knew there was things I will miss because there was just different stories branching out. So played it all the way as I like it... then followed a guide to clean up even though I already had some along each of the guides playthrough. I enjoy the game and then I may have an additional playthrough then the guide and I'm just fine.
@@RNGGamerYT I had fun with it... I would say it is 2nd tier of that type of game (the chose-your-own-adventure genre like Detroit Become Human or Life as Strange likes) so the graphically style of moving stills may throw people off.
The best part is me working my ass to finish Dead Space on 'impossible' mode, only to be accused of using "SAM" and finding out all Steam achievements can just be unlocked with it... makes me feel like I wasted my time lol.
I jumped through hoops to platinum Adventure Time...simply for the sake of having at least one! 🙃😇 On a serious note, chasing down all the trophies in a game risks ruining it forever, as in, you'll never want to play it again. I just restarted Phantom Liberty (without doing the whole prologue shtick again, as I've had my fill of it for a lifetime) because I really want to get the Mister Hands trophy which was denied last time around due to a bug where I couldn't complete the final side quest...😎
I remember me and my friend were competing for trophies. We would stockpile and then mass dump synch trophies. One day my friend did it then I saw he Platinumed Hannah Montana the Movie...I was like, you need this way more than I do...
I still love trophies and achievements. Im close to the mil on Xbox, but I've not been buying stuff like I used to just for score. Mainly because the whole system was made into a joke from the 5min 1000g/platinums. Now I just play stuff then after I beat it I try mop up the game. If I hated it I'll leave it where I've got to and move on, but if it's a challenge I'm there. Cuphead was a perfect set of achievements for me.
I guess I'm one of the rare people somewhere in the middle - i love that hit of dopamine the cheevos give, but I've never thought to look up a guide. My favorite games are Dead Cells, the Mass Effect Trilogy, and Dishonored. The only games I've really tried to 100% are the Mass Effect ones and i still haven't even done that. Dishonored and Dead Cells have ridiculously tough achievements i may never get and that's fine. I still enjoy them a whole lot. And i still play Wii games even though i kinda wish they did have achievements.
It's a Platinum trophy, and yep they are indeed the hardest since you need to get every other trophy in a game to get the Platinum. Congrats on getting it.
I don't care about achievements anymore. Was a pretty big achievement junkie, too, so when you talked about how you were playing games and following guides just to get the points, it brought me back to playing NBA 2K6, which was one of the easiest games for achievements on the 360. Like Avatar, you could get all of them pretty quickly, but you had to set it up right, which is why following the guide helped. You'd play on the team that had Steve Nash against the Raptors because the Raptors were trash in 2K6 lol. Nash was basically broken and could shoot 3s from nearly across the court. I played games with a heavy focus on achievements for about a couple years, but eventually lost interest. I think my gamerscore (built with my brother) was like lower 40k by the time I'd given up on achievement hunting, which was relatively high back in the late 2000s. My score was certainly higher than most of my friends' scores and the majority of profiles I'd see when online. Achievements drove me to do some things I wouldn't have done otherwise, like collecting all of the gold in Gun or tagging all the spots in Saints Row. It was pretty fun to follow those guides, as I was really exploring the games. But now that I look back, I'm not so sure achievements are a net positive in gaming. As you said, games are experiences, and achievements take us away from the actual experiences into focusing on a broader meta-layer game that's about convoluted point accumulation. And it's not scoring points like in the arcade game fashion; these points feel like a commodification of gaming activity rather than facets of a game system. And this activity makes you feel like a robot that you talked about. It becomes about accumulating rather than experiencing or enjoying. And we tell ourselves that we're enjoying the hunt, but are we? Looking back, I don't know...the addiction might've tricked me into believing I did. I think I enjoyed the rewards more than the journey, but retrospect can be a funny thing sometimes. Anyway, my interests are so across consoles now and I care so much more about what the game is and does. Now when I'm playing 360 and I hear that classic *plonk*, it comes as a surprise lol
It's kinda odd playing a game without achievements and/or trophies. It feels like "Why am I doing this again? Oh yeah, because I enjoy the game! D'oh!"
I have some fun with PSN trophies. When they're done well, they give me an excuse to keep playing a game that I've beaten, but don't feel like moving on from yet. When they're tedious or just not fun, I skip them. I usually pass on speedrunning trophies. I used to dabble in speedrunning, but it can make games feel more like work, and the whole point is to have fun. I also tend to skip "beat xxxx boss hitless" for the same reason. If it's stuff that tends to involve resetting constantly, that's just not fun to me. Sometimes I'll get them organically, but I'm not gonna just grind video games that I've beaten to try and become perfect. I find that the best trophies for me are a mix of rewarding natural progression with extra challenges that reward exploring the game's world and mechanics. Completing optional content, finding in-game secrets, that sort of thing. If getting all trophies requires several playthroughs, tedious challenges that players need to grind reset after reset, or absurd levels of completion (like getting all random drops when they have a miniscule drop rate or getting S-rank in all fights in a fighting game), I choose not to care and get what I get. As long as they add to my fun instead of taking away from it, I think trophies are great!
I’m well aware of the double edge sword achievements are. However, I have finish so many more games since achievements are a thing. Before that ai played a game for just an hour and move on. However, I prefer the games without missable achievements (or hardcore/timed achievements) so you don’t have to read a guide before. But can just mop them open after finishing.
I would hate if i had to do all of the thing to literally get a simple achievement then losing the track or they will make you to die or lose process like Minecraft hardcore or counter strike kill streaks
Hi RNG Gamer, I'm a new comer on your channel, I looooooove your content! Thanks for the tips about the 360 games. Even in France it went crazy! But I finally got my copy of Ninja Blade so I'll be fine. Thanks again and see you next week. (if my english is rusty please don't make fun of me please... and btw, from where is your accent?).
Thank you so much for the kind comment! I'm glad you were able to grab a few tips about collecting for the 360. See you next week. Your English is excellent, by the way. 😄 I'm from the Southeastern United States. Alabama, specifically.
I love them for many reasons, mostly because they serve as a virtual log of your gaming history. I’d love to be able to go back and see what I accomplished and when on NES games. The trick is not to fall in to the trap of being a completionist.
That's a great way to view it!
Pretty much this, don't view them as completionist unless you absolutely love the game
You're more right than you know!
There is very little balancing to them. I
I am kind of in the middle. I always look up a guide before playing to see howr hard the platinum is. But if I see that a plat is to long or to hard to get, I just play the game how I want & move on. So there are times where I only get 30% of the trophies for a game or the plat or anything in between. I just enjoy trophies, regardless of the plat or not
I'm pretty much in the same place myself right now!
Im not addicted but i do really enjoy them. I would hate if they take them away, it helps give me a sense of accomplishment. And i can look back and see all the games i beat.
I like looking back at them, too! 😄
I use to be big into achievement hunting. I found myself playing absolutely terrible games just for the achievements, eventually that just killed it for me. Now I don't really even worry about achievements. It's a lot more fun that way.
We're in the same position now 😃
Bro that's so bad, happy that managed to stop when you realized it
The only achievement I'm missing in Starfield is for reaching level 100. After 120 hours I'm only level 51...
Jeez! For real!?! That's the crap I'm talking about 🤣
I'm an unabashed Nintendo fanboy, but I really love their statement on why they don't have trophies or achievements.
Fantastic replay! I think Nintendo is right!
I have circled back and find it’s more fun jumping in blind and see what trophies unlock, then if I REALLY want to I’ll get a guide and get more, or I just move on.
That's a great way to go about it!
I’m so deep into the achievements that I’m like 5 years behind on current games. Idk how to play games regularly anymore.
Get a burner account, keep the achievement profile for the completions and play games on the other, help me loads!
Noooo! Not you, too 🤣
@@RNGGamerYTWhy? If that brings him happiness then it’s his choice…..
Control was one of the worst Platinums I ever endured. Not because the game is hard, mind you, but because I had to play Control for like 80 hours
I just finished it! Got to the end, and all it was missing was the 100 skill points trophy. Nah.... that's enough for me 😅
I 100%ed it 3 times lol once on series x, xbox one, and pc the other 2 times I did it was quicker bc I knew what to do
Funny, control was my first ever 100% achievement run and I really enjoyed it. It’s probably one of my favourite top 20 games of all time
@wghd6782 the only bad thing was that horrid map
Its easy cause of accessibility u must have played at launch
Honestly online/multiplayer achievements turn me off hunting as opposed to the ball busters like "beat the 20hr game on hardest difficulty without taking damage once"
The online achievements were always the worst! Also missable achievements 🤣
That's the best way to do it!
Thanks for watching, brother!
I think they are great when they enrich the game... but I'm bad about letting them dictate it 😅
I appreciate the trophy/achievement lists existing as I've had some great fun with games I otherwise wouldn't have like in Resident Evil 5, but I've never let them direct how I play a game.
Perfect!
I usually do my first playthrough of a game blind. Then if i really enjoyed it and wanna spend time with it, i will go for the trophies. Sometimes, if it requires another playthrough and is a long game, i come back to it a year later or so.
A whole year later!?! That's dedication
exactly what i do
That's commitment!
Wow that really sucks! Glad I never got into that. My problem is that I keep playing my favorites too much and don’t expand enough into the rest of the backlog (Looking at you Skyrim) looking for more potential favorites.
So many people fall into replaying the same things over and over... including me😅 That's why I started doing the random gaming thing
Wow! It's incredible that you're on such a long streak!
Another great video.👍🏻
Everyone loves an achievement pop. I can also see them taking away game enjoyment.
Thanks so much!
I have never cared about trophies. I don’t know why but it’s just never mattered to me. And I’m glad. It just seems exhausting.
I prefer unlockables 🤣 it's nice to get something for all your hard work
I remember that level. I am just not sure if it was in Sonic 3 or Sonic and Knuckles. I played both of those games around the same time.
@@lanceknightmare You have to attach Sonic 3 with Sonic & Knuckles to get that level.
I only ever platinumed one game on PS4. Valkyria Chronicles 4 and only because I realised I was so close after finishing the game, I just thought well, I may as well finish it off but generally they don't phase me much at all.
I've done that a few times myself! Thanks for watching
I find the best balance is to not actively try for trophies on a first playthrough, but then go back to it after completion to try and get most of the trophies that aren't stupidly difficult to get, like beating the game on hardest difficulty in a certain time without getting hit, or multiplayer trophies, I really hate them, it's just an excuse to play parts of an already finished game again for me, I'm just not fussed about getting all of them
That's a great way to do it... as long as there aren't missable trophies 🤣
I think that's a good thing to do! Games are supposed to be fun
Super interesting video for me. As someone that knows basically nothing about achievements on games, I was surprised by some of this. Great video brother!
Thanks, man! I always forget how locked you are into the NES 🤣
@@RNGGamerYT I just suck real bad at most of the newer stuff! 🤣🤣😂
Ive never cared about trophies or achievements at all. Literally never pay attention to them. And after this video I am glad I am like that lol
The comments of this video are a roller coaster of ups and downs. 😅
Thanks for watching!
Biggest reason : plat hunting has BECOME famous in recent years so devs intentionally implement things that forces u to do "too many collectible multiple play through on game that has zero replayability fun wise too much grind forces u to put more time in game by design in sake of plat"
Bingo!!! When trophies became a selling point, they really went overboard
I really like that aspect of it, too. I still go back through my list and reminisce about the good/bad old days 🤣
And I really need to think of something to say 😆.... that ending kills me
@minarum Hannah Montana... lol! I never got THAT bad 🤣
Very cool! It's really incredible that you were able to get all of the achievements just by natural progression
I use to be a trophy hunter but over time I realised it sucks the fun out of gaming. Nowadays I only go for 100% completion / all trophies or achievements for games I truly respect. Find it's the best way otherwise your pastime starts feeling like a chore.
I 100% agree!
Perfect way to think about it! They are great for extending time with a game
i'll never forget all of the pain and stress i put myself through while in pursuit of getting all the achievements in lost planet on xbox 360.
Ugh, that was a hard one!
This video was me 15 years ago. Now, first time around I go in blind, Trophy/Achievement notifications OFF and just play through the game.
If I want to play the game again, I'll take a look at the Trophies/Achievements and get the ones that seem fun or interesting (no grinding or collectibles).
Fantastic system!
I used to be an adventurer like you, then i took an arrow in the knee, but.... took the time to write down all pros and cons i could think of.
Pros:
+ It gives longevity to games you normally wouldn't play anymore after finishing it
+ It challenges you to get better at a game
+ It's a bit of a logbook where you keep track of all the games you played and all the things you have achieved over the years.
+ It can be used as an extra layer of competition with your friends
+ It makes you play games you normally wouldn't play
+ It gives extra purpose to gaming
+ It makes you experience a game on an entirely different level.
+ It can give a sense of purpose
+ It can make you proud to see your super high trophy score.
Cons:
+ Can be tedious to 100% a game
+ Can make you forget to enjoy a game
+ Games without achievements become irrelevant
+ Can be very addictive
Final verdict: As a former super fanatical trophy hunter hunter and self admitted trophy junky, I really had to adjust my mindset to being able to enjoy games again without trophies (for example) games on the Switch.
I tried to not use guide for the most I can
That's the way to do it! I love them when they come with natural progression.
That's admirable 🤣
I recently started playing a title and then deciding whether to complete it or not and I saw myself in several of the things you said in the video including not starting a game for the achievements. Now that I have much less time I have started to give much less importance to completing games also due to the countless games created specifically for gamerscore. I have exceeded 500,000 gamerscore and I am satisfied. Nice video.
PS: right now I'm completing Ninety-Nine Nights even though it's old I liked it
I'm so glad we are on the same page!
Satisfaction is underrated.
It's probably good that you didn't get sucked down the achievement hole because it sure eats up a lot of time 🤣
I have the same issue as you about sticking with a game even when I'm not having a good time
all games are enjoyable, just give your time to play a little and engulf yourself in the world.
@@lionfire3359 I understand the sentiment but I think some games are more enjoyable to some than others. Just depends on your taste and your preference.
I thank you for making this videos you are a very honest person you tell the truth all of the time
Thank you so much! That's a really kind thing to say
The online achievements were always brutal!
I hate when achievements are bugged, too. I have so many games sitting at 99% because of one achievement that won't register
This video makes me grateful to be in the "completely don't care" camp.
It gets way worse than me down in the. comments 😅 People are REALLY into trophy hunting
I'm exactly the same these days... but the urge is still there 😅
Pretty much followed the exact same path.
That's awesome! I'm glad we feel the same way
I think it really depends on if you actually like what youre doing or not. Personally I love the process of looking up guides, sorting achievements into sheets and anticipating the difficult ones, going through and getting good (plus I only 100% games i actually enjoy). If it's something youre not having fun doing it then it would only make sense to not do that
Well said!
I get it! It feels like the game is taunting you for not playing the way they want you to
I played Skyrim, Oblivion, Fallouts, Bioshocks, and tons of FPS games plus Souls games and Blizzard games dozens of times per game before making online profiles. Now I like collecting points and trophies but its not completely mandatory. So I only replay game for points when and if I feel like it.
That feels like a healthy place to be!
Sounds like you are in a better place! 😃
Also, thanks for letting me know about the trophy in control
I learned to like achievements for the King Kong 360 game because to get every achievement from just playing the game
That's how I wish every game was!
i've been collecting trophies since 2015 and i have 209 platinums. i really sometimes skipped a game because of the trophy requirements but lately i kinda gave up on that "perfect" trophy list with everything being 100% and just play the games i want to play. and ofc i still platinum games but only the ones i really want to
I'm glad you got to a more healthy place and didn't try to maintain that pace. That would have been way too daunting 🤣
A couple of people messaged me who are over a million on their gamerscore.
One guy hires people to play games on his account...
Not really a trophy hunter but the 2019 Spiderman game came close to making me one. I spent hours attempting to platinum it and I may just try again once I get Spiderman 2.
I hear it has a fantastic trophy list! Thanks for thr support, brother!
Give it a shot! Sometimes, it feels good to let go and just do things the easy way.
Those online games can eat up a ton of time!
@@RNGGamerYT Yeah, I actually think it might!
They can! I put down a few years on Sea of Thieves, I played almost nothing else haha
felt the same way about playing games with no achievements
I'm glad to hear that I'm not alone 🤣
New sub to the channel. Really enjoy watching your videos. I'm been a achievement hunter since the 360 release day, god I need a break 😂😂
I'm glad you are enjoying the videos! Thanks for subscribing. Take that break 😄
Hey just wanted to comment really like your content stay classy! Also achievement hunting feels pointless to me but I’m also have a video game backlog so who am I to say anything haha
Thanks for the kind words! I've learned more in the comments about achievement hunting than I ever thought I would know 🤣
I only 100% the games I love. And I might stop if it's too much of a grind or chore. I like the way steam handles achievements and profiles since you can display your 100% games as well as specific achievements so it feels a little more important than on consoles, they allow you to display your fav games
That's a good way to do it! I like the way stream handles the achievements as well
I have a dozen or so platinum trophies, and I'm not really proud of any of them. I wish I could disable trophies from popping up
For me it depends on the game. There are games on Steam I try to get all achievements if I happen to notice I have more than half of them unlocked by the time I reach the end credits or, in the case of open-ended games, close to being burnt out.
That seems like a healthy way to handle them 😄
Usually I play games without caring for achievements but if I really like the game I go for 100%
I'm trying to get to that mindset 😅
I used to do the same almost. I did avatar also the easiest 1000 gamer score ever. There is a turtles game that's almost as easy to get the 1000. The halo one was hard. Mile high club in COD modern warfare was one of the hardest.
I never did the Mile High Club achievement because I didn't actually play the game until a couple of years ago. Glad you hear you achieved the impossible 🤣
What if I told you there were games faster than avatar
There are a plethora of “developers” on Xbox that release shell games using mainly unreal elements that can be completed in like 5 mins or less. These games balloon up to 4000-5000g over time. It’s a real divisive topic in the achieving hunting community right now.
I one play games for achievements so my hobby is very niche
Wow! I had no idea. How fascinating
I absolutely love achievement hunting. However I play the game to enjoy it at first. Then i go for round 2, 3 or 4 so i can get achievements without caring about the game.
That's a good way to do it! Missable achievements really screw with this though
It's probably more than double what I have 🤣
My favorite kind of achievements are just for story completion 😅
I started in 2019, and now im at 583k gamerscore 600k here we come
That's incredible!
I think the big problem with many of them is amount that get discontinued/unobtainable because of server closures. Bad Company 2 for example has 42 unobtainable. The next is the amount of shovelware with 20-30 minute completions. It’s taken away any real accomplishment.
You're absolutely correct! That has always been a concern.
I remember the Halo one. I use to be 100% addicted as well and would buy games only on PlayStation or Xbox and ignore Nintendo. These days, I only go for trophies on games that have earned the effort from me. I use it as a sign of respect to the developer these days.
Looks like we're on the same page, brother! That's how I feel as well
I have about 10 platinum trophies over PS3/PS4/PS5.
It's my way of honoring such an awesome game and also getting the most play out of games I love so much
I totally understand that mindset!
I only go for the trophies/achievements of games I really like and they can’t be super difficult to unlock either
That's pretty much where I am these days 😃
I’ll go for them on some games if i decide to dedicate the time or just finish the story and then move onto something else. But i automatically decide not to go for them if they have multiplayer trophies. Those can just be too much of a grind or headache
I always hated the multiplayer achievements, too!
I love getting achievements because it's cool to see on my account. That doesn't mean I need all of them.
That's a healthy view of them!
Control is a superb game, by the way. Enjoy the Ashtray Maze. One of my favorite gaming sequences. The platinum is quite straightforward; you should definitely go for it.
I might go for it after all! That's not the first time I've heard about the ashtray maze
Watching this after I just got a Millon Gamerscore 3 days ago hehehe
I just retired from hunting
Whoa! A million gamerscore is no joke. That's absolutely incredible. Enjoy your retirement 😃
I came for the awesome thumbnail, stayed for the awesome video
The thumbnail came out great!
That's a healthy way to do it! But one question, did you beat your friend?!? 🤣
@@RNGGamerYT We're still at it, but I'm in the lead
@@zakaryreddington20 awesome!
I hate missable achievements! Also, how did you like As Dusk Falls? It's on my wishlist!
@@RNGGamerYT I had fun with it... I would say it is 2nd tier of that type of game (the chose-your-own-adventure genre like Detroit Become Human or Life as Strange likes) so the graphically style of moving stills may throw people off.
There’s only 2 games I platinumed. Octopath Traveler 2 and Sea of Stars. No regrets. No desire to catch ‘‘em all
I'm glad you were able to knock out octopath traveler 2 and Sea of Stars. I haven't played either one yet
Some of those random achievements in halo reach were weekly challenges in the game early on
Ugh...I forgot about that 😅
The best part is me working my ass to finish Dead Space on 'impossible' mode, only to be accused of using "SAM" and finding out all Steam achievements can just be unlocked with it... makes me feel like I wasted my time lol.
Ugh, I hate that. I totally feel for you
I jumped through hoops to platinum Adventure Time...simply for the sake of having at least one!
Ugh, that sucks! Bugged trophies are definitely a thing that ruined some experiences for me, for sure😃
I remember me and my friend were competing for trophies. We would stockpile and then mass dump synch trophies. One day my friend did it then I saw he Platinumed Hannah Montana the Movie...I was like, you need this way more than I do...
Lol! This was a fantastic comment!
That's a great way to see if!
I'm terrified of trying to compete dead cells. I know I'll love it... but what a daunting task 😃
I understand the time aspect. I don't have the time to "git gud" to play the souls like games
i enjoy getting trophies and achievements in games i like
i never got into playing games i didn't like for them
I'm glad you were able to stay in a healthy place 😁
I think I only had one blue trophy 🏆 they are like the hardest one to get not to mention mastering those games!!!
It's a Platinum trophy, and yep they are indeed the hardest since you need to get every other trophy in a game to get the Platinum. Congrats on getting it.
Yeah, they are the one you get for 100% completing the other trophies.
Congrats on the 10k subs!!!!
On a side note I never look at achievements in a game 😂
Thanks, thanks!
Sounds like we had a similar experience, and both ended up in a better place.
I never would have even attempted Akumu mode in The Evil Within or One Shot from Alien Isolation without achevements
Was it worth it?
It's kinda odd playing a game without achievements and/or trophies. It feels like "Why am I doing this again? Oh yeah, because I enjoy the game! D'oh!"
Haha! The story of my life
Yeah, they can take the enjoyment out of a game, but I am still a sucker for them. I got 106 platinums right now. I'm still going strong
Whoa! That's a little more than me... and I know how much work I put in. Kudos
That's a healthy way to think about them. Having them enrich the gaming experience rather than dictate it is the way to go
I’m well aware of the double edge sword achievements are. However, I have finish so many more games since achievements are a thing. Before that ai played a game for just an hour and move on.
However, I prefer the games without missable achievements (or hardcore/timed achievements) so you don’t have to read a guide before. But can just mop them open after finishing.
I'm glad they pushed you to play more of your games! I always hated missable achievements, too!
I would hate if i had to do all of the thing to literally get a simple achievement then losing the track or they will make you to die or lose process like Minecraft hardcore or counter strike kill streaks
Ugh, that sounds brutal!
