New Video Idea! - I ran into this problem the other day and this video shows it happening perfectly! 'How to shoot talking head videos in changing light conditions'. Between 1:20 and 18:58 you can see the huge drop off in natural light as you go through golden hour and then dusk! It would be super interesting to get any tips for adjusting WB/exposure on the fly if you're shooting long form content over that time span. I shot a friend's podcast the other day from 4-6PM and dealing with lighting behind the scenes and then in Premiere was a big hassle.
The gaming monitor is a (cough, cough...) game changer! I use my laptop screen at home as my second monitor for file management while I am editing on the big BenQ monitor. Thanks for cluing me in on how to get the same experience out in the field. Optimizing real estate on the laptop is kinda essential for those of whose eyes are getting a little older (which is why I would not know anything about gaming monitors!!) Cheers!!
on the note of straps: I put some simple "harness clip" thin on the end og the original strap. Easy to remove, no dingling stuff remains on the camera, except that triangle thingy.Way cheaper and easier. My friend has the PD strap. Every time I had to borrow his camera when I needed to film a 4 camera setup. Thad hanging PD stuff made me mad. I cannot imagine using my camera like that.
The ISDT charger is amazing, though, it's widely unavailable now. It's usb-c, it charges fw and fz batteries, It can fast charge batteries, and the display is awesome. I also love that when it's not plugged in, you can pop a battery in and find out how much charge it has.
Only thing I'll disagree with is buying the Sony batteries. Batteries have become so good now a days you really don't need to worry. I have about 16 PowerExtra batteries and they last about 90% as well as the original Sony. I can get about 1:45-50 minutes with them. Been using them for over a year now with the A7siii for weddings and commercial work and haven't encountered any issues whatsoever. Also you get two batteries and a charger for $50 US. I highly recommend them and won't be spending $80 on one Sony battery.
This travel compatible second monitor is really interesting! Thanks for sharing. Peak design is my strap system of choice since their first project, the clip system for the strap is really amazing, couldn’t do without now.
When I saw the article for the Zeiss × Peak Design strap and anchors, you were the first person to come to mind lol. I need to look more into those monitors...
I used a peak design standard plate and attach an anchor on it, and used the Cuff or Leash V1 (its important that its the version 1) on it. Only 1 attach point and it doesn't interfere when rotating the camera and its twice as fast when removing the Leash compared to the Slide
3:40 i dont think that you tried newer batteries. They really improved and even offer more battery life than the regular batteries if you purchase the right one.
Love your videos! Especially its fun with Vivienne and yourself in the little role play. So great! Yes, peak design strap is a must and agreed with the battery part. Protector is good reminder. Thanks for the great work!
For camera straps I am a huge fan of the cross body type where the camera slides on the strap. Great video I always like to get new ideas that help me use my Sony more efficiently and effectively.
Very informative video on sony gears. A good cage for hybrid shooters would be the Smallrig Half Cage for the A7IV & A7Siii. Since i do like to protect my camera bodies, this cage have made it convenient for me to set the camera down on rough surface without worrying my camera will be scuff. Then attaching the mic or gopro into the cold shoe with ease. And even attaching a monitor mount holder onto the cage allows room for an external monitors while also attaching a handle grip.
Hey Jason welcome to my town 😆 I live Upstate in Westchester County, but we have some pretty cool towns to see only an hour away hope you get to see them 👋
That's awesome man! usually it's a hit or miss with those 3rd party stuff. I had some Wasabi ones that are still kicking to this day! Which brand are you using?
If you're asking if the XPERIA can control the focus of the Alpha cameras, then no :( It can do Touch Tracking AF in it's own native camera app though 😅
@@JasonVong That's what I thought. I wish you could output touch tracking AF support to a monitor so you didn't have to use Sony's crappy, small screens.
Hey brother what would you recommend for someone doing both photography and video in terms of a single camera and lens(es) if budget/cost was unlimited? So far I am thinking either Sony Alpha 1 (A1), Sony A7IV, or A7SIII . Ignore prices, I looking to buy once/cry once on most versatile camera & lens(es) setup.
can you use the handle with the Sony eb10 mic as they go in the same place and a monitor at the same time , if no any recommendation on which mic or handle thank you
I used 3rd party on my old Canon Cameras but bought Ansmann ones for my XT3 form Amazon ( same one sold at WEX ) and after a few months they start to swell up, then after about a year they swell so much it’s so difficult to get them out of the camera you have to shake them out, not good for any camera so they go in the bin. Now I use Duracell 3rd Party ones with no issues at all.
Get a small rig half cage, Jason! I’ve been paranoid ever since my AC accidentally dropped my last camera because of a loose hot/cold shoe handle hahaha
You didn’t mention an aftermarket L-bracket, in the past I’ve always used RRS, but finding something for the A7iv is elusive. Any leads on an L-bracket for the A7iv?
LOL I hate those clunky peak design connectors! I use the tiny strap Sony used to supply with the RX100m5 - it holds your camera to your wrist, without having those clunkers dangling off my camera :D
17:01 I don't understand why the close shutter feature can't be firmware'd to to those of us still "slumming" it with a7RIV's and I'm assuming a7SIII owners as well. They're all current generation cameras. You can't tell me it's processor dependent or some other nonsense excuse like Sony made about the menus lol.

Peak Design is great, but I am always reluctant to use their straps because the metal clips are very likely to scratch the camera body, screen or even the lens.
Great video -- appreciate the recommendations! One minor comment -- when you're cleaning lenses with wipes, NEVER use your finger directly behind the cleaning cloth. If by chance a piece of sand or grit gets between your finger and the lens, you're gonna scratch it. It's better to scrunch up the cleaning cloth and wipe the lens with it. That way if something solid gets in between, there will be much less pressure, and you'll less likely scratch your lens! Enjoy your travels and looking forward to see more! (Oh, my latest accessory is the A74!)
I'm finally able to upgrade my A6400 to a "legit" camera. If I'm mostly getting it for video, is it still worth spending the extra $1000 to get an a7SIII over the a7 IV?
