Very nice video how often should you change the differential oil for maintenance? I would plan to do this and paint the outer surface of the cover too. Thank you
Thank you. Per the Ford Manual, "do not check or change fluid unless a leak is suspected, service is required or the assembly has been submerged in water." Ford-design axles are lubricated for life.
@@mcgurrentertainment thanks for the prompt response, I would have to spray it with brake cleaner to further check it out for a leak. Thank you so much I really appreciate your advice.
Good video. Subscribed. I have a 2006 GT and I was installing a rear sway bar over the weekend and I saw that there was some light blackish residue at the bottom of the diff cover almost looking like a grease stain. I’m the original owner and it’s just shy of 100K miles. Should this cover be completely dry? I never noticed any oil on the garage floor. It’s been stored all winter. How do you check the oil level? Just put your finger in the fill hole? I never jacked by the rear diff before so I’m not sure why it would be leaking if it is.
Original owner, very nice. Typically, the differential cover is dry, however sometimes grease and fuilds from the road can splatter under the vehicle (reasonably). Yes, you can easily check the level via fill plug. If you remove the bolt and the fluid is close to the fill hole, you're good. Leak can be caused by a defect in the gasket (it happens). Are you noticing any issues (noise or vibration) while driving?
@@mcgurrentertainment thanks for your response. My buddy says it’s normal to have some weep and I found some stuff online saying the same. I will clean up the cover and see if I see any more. It looks like something that’s been there a while. I have found this car to always have some rear end noise but it’s hard to tell if it’s the rear end or the tires. I’ve read some other comments from people saying the same about rear end noise.
According to your owners manual, "Add 4 oz. (118 ml) of Additive Friction Modifier XL-3 or equivalent meeting Ford specification EST-M2C118-A for complete refill of Traction-Lok or TORSEN® axles."
Before changing the differential fluid, we did contact AMSOIL, and they did inform us their fluid contained Friction Modifier. However, their lubricant is formulated for typical limited-slip differentials, and the Mustang falls under the atypical category. So, leaning on the side of caution (and following procedure), we decide to add the Friction Modifier. At a minimum, we can at least minimize gear-housing chatter. Good question and attention to detail.
Since you seem to be amazing and replying to comments on a year old video, how did you manage to still get under the vehicle to fill and replace the plug after putting it back on the ground?
I talked to my supplier and he said they are sold out (supplier chain issues). You can buy the pump. If you use the bottle only, you might have trouble getting to the fill hole.

It's likely you do need slip lock, double check your manual. The vent valve is a Ford part. Links in the description: Vent Valve (P/N:4R3Z-4022-AA) - amzn.to/3tj7IKk
I don't have the service manual in front of me for that year, but if I recall, the 2008 V6 requires 3.2 pints of gear lube vs. the 5.1 pints for the 2012 GT. For the torque specs and steps, you may want to consult the service manual.
Excellent tutorial. Couple of questions: 1) Is it exactly the same procedure for 3.7? 2) How often should you change the fluid, 3) Is it OK to replace valve later (or only can do it with empty diff).
Thank you. Those are good questions, I'll try my best to answer them. 1) Its very possible. Starting in 2011, both the V6 (3.7L) & V8 (5.0L Coyote) Mustangs used the Ford 8.8 rear ends. 2) Per the Ford Manual, "do not check or change fluid unless a leak is suspected, service is required or the assembly has been submerged in water." Ford-design axles are lubricated for life. 3) Yes. The valve can be replaced anytime. Since this was the cause of the leak, it needed to be replaced. Hope this information helps.
@@mcgurrentertainmentThank you very much! So if it looks OK all dry etc. maybe I shouldn't touch it? I did have the fluid changed 30-40k miles ago so it's not factory. Another question is are you sure you have to put as much fluid as it fits in there, another opinion I was given it's just 2 quarts of fluid, I don't know what's the official Ford's version.
40k miles ago is not bad. If you're not having issues, it should be OK. The service manual states, "Service refill capacities are determined by filling the axle to the bottom of the fill hole with the axle at ride height." It also calls for 5-5.25 pts (2.5-2.625 qts).
It looks like the Yukon gasket from AM doesn't require it either (always double-check). The description said no other modifications are required, and many reviewers mentioned not using rtv.
Bought the car used with 139k 2013 v6 auto. I've got it up to 143k miles. No leaks or issues would it be good to change the fluid or leave it since its waaaaay past the interval.
@@mcgurrentertainment thanks brother. I was thinking the same thing. I've got some ford performance friction modifier to mix with it. appreciate you and the content you put out :). would it be mindful to do another fluid change at 30k miles just to upkeep on everything?
