Jeremy hand rolling his Alpacka Wolverine Packraft

- Lots of people can roll their packrafts but how many can easily hand roll theirs? Jeremy Platt @wilderwheeling makes it look super easy in his Alpacka Raft Wolverine. Superb skills by Jeremy. So rather than trying to get out backcountry during these tough COVID-19 times perhaps think about the technical skills you would like to improve upon in the future. There is lots you can work on in flat water and even in a pool if you are lucky enough to have one. One way to improve whilst staying home is to watch slow motion footage of yourself (or others) and to analyse your/their techniques - what worked well and what didn’t. Many things become obvious at slow speed! We use slow motion in a lot of our packrafting courses and particularly in our advanced or high intermediate courses as it is such a valuable tool for teaching and learning.
Great video, and I especially appreciate the underwater shots in slow motion!
A rare perspective and definitely my first find among rolling a packraft videos.
Jeremy sure has some mad skills
Ah shucks. Thanks Rod!
Excellent...
Is this the Wolverine self bailer? I thought the sb was even harder to roll then the decked version :o
Yes it’s the SB. Slightly harder than a decked boat but still possible.
@@MarkOates ok thx :) well yeah definitely possible if he does it without a paddle :D
Impressive. I cant even come close to rolling my packraft with a paddle.
If you have a cargo zip try rolling with a decent amount of weight inside the packraft. It definitely helps! Here Jeremy was on a multiday trip with a reasonable amount of weight in the boat. This helps to stabilise the boat and is particularly an advantage at the end of the roll which is where many people struggle. Try filming yourself and watching it back in slow motion. You could even share it so and ask for advice on what aspects you should particularly work on. Good luck with the practice and thanks for the comment!
@@MarkOates Wow. I didn't know weight would HELP. Thanks for the advice.
Ok well o officially have no more excuses
I really really really want to get my roll down in my wolverine. I tried many time last year and just couldn't figure out it compared to my hard shell kayak (which is super easy). I'll try some weigh in my tubes.
I see a lot of packrafters who roll consistently (like Jeremy) finishing very much on the back deck. Personally my kayak roll sees me finishing really early and on the front deck however this style does not work as well in a packraft which is much slower to roll. I actually finish with a short sweep forward at the end of my paddle/arm motion to finish off. Occasionally I’ll resort to a Pawlatta roll in really aerated water in order to achieve a longer sweep. Good luck with it!
Definitely a missing piece! I will be practicing 😬💪🏻
Have you used it unplanned on the river yet?
I personally haven't but I am pretty sure Jeremy has used it unplanned on a river. Cheers
Excellent! When can we get an instructional video?
Hah. :) Not sure I'll get the time or opportunity to work on this skill for a long time due to our situation here with COVID-19. I'll see though if Jeremy can offer some further insights.
Hey David!
It is honestly the same method as hand rolling a whitewater kayak, except I find it is really important to fling your leading arm out of the water as hard as possible at the end of the roll. This gives you a little more momentum to encourage the boat to come up with you.
@@jeremyplatt Great! Thanks for the tip! When things open up I'll be back in the water practicing!

Thats great...Hope these rafts are easier to roll than a kayak...
Hah. Unfortunately not. A LOT harder than a kayak! Jeremy is showing considerable skill!
