East Berlin - The Peace Concert
For the first time on UA-cam, here is the complete concert Big Country performed in front of 150,000+ fans and when I say 'complete' concert, keep reading below.
I try, as much as I possibly can, to upload interesting Big Country stuff to watch and listen to and I hope this clip fits that category.
For starters, 'Where the Rose Is Sown" makes it's debut on UA-cam from this gig but more interesting than that even is that when the cameras stopped rolling on that night in East Berlin, Big Country actually came back on stage for another song after the crowd simply would not let them leave and performed one more encore - Harvest Home.
I have edited it into the clip after the end credits have finished, so keep watching.
Although it is audio only, it is fascinating for being perhaps the only time that Stuart has beckoned the crowd to sing the response to "In a harvest home" with "Whoa!" and not "Yoh!" (1hr22min mark) Perhaps he thought "whoa" would be more easily picked up by the crowd. Anyway, it's all included in the clip, so I hope you like the little added treat.
Stay Alive!
Thanks for subbing and I look forward to reading any comments you'd like to leave.

Oh, my God! That was my very first concert ever. We were 17 and absolutely excited to watch bands from the "West" live for the first time. You never forget the first concert. I didn't know that there was a TV recording of it. Thank you very much !
You were a part of history that night, dude.
Kann mich auch noch genau an dieses Konzert erinnern- es war vom Sound und vom gefühl her episch für diese Zeit in diesem Land.
@@candyabernethy997 The feeling , the Sound was epic for this Time. a nation embarking on a new era
Ich war auch dabei. Toller Mitschnitt
Ich hatte keine Ahnung das es sowas in der Größenordnung in der DDR überhaupt gab! Ich kuck das Video zum x-ten mal. Einfach nur WOW
All I have to say is, my god, what a brilliant band. RIP Stuart. You are missed, but your music will live on.
If only Stuart were still with us. One of music's icons . Great man , great front man , great musician, great lyrics . He was the complete package. Rest in peace
Ditto
He's sooo missed
Steeltown has been one of my favourite albums of all time since it was first released. Sadly never got to see them live. RIP Stuart. You are missed!!!!!
Mine too, in fact it's my number 1 album. I never got to see them live with Stuart, that is my biggest regret.
Such a shame, I still miss Stu, I was into BC from the first single and got my hair cut just like him, good times
Thanks Big Country for bringing me so much joy in my youth!! Stuart your stars shine bright ✨
I feel the love of u
Orsm words
This band makes me feel like I’m glad to be on the Earth. Was lucky to see them back in the 80’s. What can you say? Genius.
Just a shadow of the people we can be. Bless you Stuart
Look away, looka away what a unforgettable concert!!
BIG COUNTRY when one plays the guitar sounds like a Bagpipe.... that's amazing art
I had the incredible honor, to be part of that amazing audience. An unforgettable evening for all who had been there. In memoriam to Stuart Adamson. Love. Peace.
You lucky lucky thing you xx
Lucky you!!!
It was great to be part of the Big country family. Great that Bruce and Mark are keeping the flame lighting
lucky you :-D
Make sure you cherish the memory forever 💙
Stuart Adamson...legend
had to google translate, but that's beautiful, thank you
The most underrated band and man in the world ever bar none!!!!
Completely untrue. Look at the size of the crowd. No one ever underrated them. All of their fans loved BC.
Honoured to see him at work, and to chat to him at the bike racing at Knockhill, many a time
Čudovit vokal, glasba moje mladosti, uf kar zmrazi me od positive vibration, ko poslušam to glasbo ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Me too!
Passion and beauty, that's what Big Country were, and thank you Stuart.
Stuart Adamson was a force of nature. His guitar playing coupled with brilliant vocals and writing were unmatched and underrated. He is missed. (He took his life a few blocks from where I lived in Honolulu).
Took his own life in Hawaii? I reached the dark side in the islands myself. Deceptively depressing there, was my experience, lucky to have survived the place. That is brutally sad; I've not a mere micro millionth of his talent, yet I trudge on. Why? I'm about to fucking cry, I don't want to know this.
@@matthewcohen7488 Hope you're doing better dude, all the best, from Scotland
You can actually rent the actual room he died in. Fans have booked it solid six months ahead.
That’s morbid ☹️
Not only a brilliant guitarist...but what a voice too..Stuart are missed so very much ....RIP you absolute LEGEND ..xx
I so appreciate being able to just internet search and find this. Social media is wretched, but the internet is good!
The BC1000Stars corner of the internet is the best place you could be. 😀
this was an exceptional band.
FROM A TIME WHEN BANDS MEANT LIFE OR DEATH IN THE FANS EYES, THE TIME WHEN A BAND WAS YOUR BAND, THROUGH UPS N' DWNS, ALL THE WAY. BIG COUNTRY, THE ALARM, SIMPLE MINDS AND U2. NOSTALGIA IS A REAL GIFT DONT'CHA THINK. RIP STU. ONE OF THE FINEST WITH SKIDS AND BIG COUNTRY.
What a comment. Love The Minds and feel the same.
@@temphold1 GOOD VIBES.
❤Stuart❤...they were all better at their instruments than U2 ever dreamed..Bono is a superb lyricist and Edge has his unique great sound..but honesty BC could out play the hell out of them..RIP Stuart, we love you!
I absolutely agree. Sad how it ended 😩
Stuart Adamson's lyrics weren't too shabby either.
@faddy24 bono is a bell end but stu is a legend
Was a massive Big Country fan, saw them loads - even with Mike Peters after Stuarts tragic death - it just dawned on me, all the songs they wrote about the country and people - quite unique really - RIP Stuart
Bono was a fan of Stuart.
@@MC-yb5leBono is an OWW ... a One World W4NK3R..
He is a sell out of stupendous proportions, an all round scum puppet for the anti humanist big corp cartel. There is not enough chunder in the world to indicate how much I h8 that greedy sycophantic pig.
Yes....and for this he has my utmost admiration. His Skids song Blood and Soil is the most overt signal of how rooted he was to land and heritage. 20+years since he left us ...one can hardly imagine how deeply he would be feeling the state of his homelands now.
Maybe he was sensitive to how fragile everything was and being powerless to effect the change necessary to divert back to a what-was track ended up channelling that despair on what became a destructive path.
Forget how great they were. Short story me and my sister kept stealing of each other their albums (cassettes) of each other. Too young to see them in concert which is a great regret but love listening to this. xx
I am one of the fortunate people to see these perform live. I am blessed.Cornwall Colliseum 84/85 from my shocking memory.
I was at that gig. Had a chat and a few bevvies with the band at their hotel afterwards.
Pretty sure BC saved my life when I was an emotional messed up 15 year old. Big regret never seeing em live, when I was young I saw the VHS taped concert from New Years Eve in Glasgow and was blown away by how a band could lift the crowd like that. Into something so rock and so inspiring. Loved the early records. Porrohman… its so effin good here. Thanks 🙏
Tremendous band
Love this band !
I was front row at the Lizard Lounge, Dallas, TX 1996, i was blown away at the Big Country sound Live, loved them more since.
Thank you for sharing video, another gone before their time.
Alcohol is poison !
Volume turned up all the way, n kilts on!!!
Restless natives...one of my absolute favs. What a great drummer Mark is
Oh my gosh, Love that little laugh Stuart does after song Look Away!! Priceless 😊 Stuart, Always Always Thinking of you Darling!! Xxoo
I was there! Never to forget.❤
Where the rose is sown is out of this world
padraig hi mate yeah how good is it here. Stunning. I think this and Porrohman are the highlights of this gig for me, both are outstanding.
Such an underrated band, A pleasure to see them again... Thank you.
ross killy Underrated by what rating company? Who's rating them?
@@jumpinjojo By the media/people maybe, i saw BC first time in 1986 at the NEC in front of 12000 but in 2000 on last tour saw them at MK Uni with 300 in attendance a sad demise
@@jumpinjojoidiot
apologise misinterpreted thought you were slagging them
@@kennyopinmind7558 I saw them in the lake district of England back in 1998. Went backstage and met the boys. It was fantastic!!
Like many bands, they were on top and slowly faded away, but their fans were always loyal.
Real ppl singing real songs.
I can't get enough of them, Stuart is just so f....... amazing. Miss those times. Love em.
What a legend , so incredibly sad he is no longer around ❤😢
R.I.P Stuart Adamson
Greatness ! Love this band. Rest In Peace Stuart. Best Wishes - John
Wonderful era and gig ! 🙂👍 Stuart still alive...🏴🎤🎸
There is only one 80s rock band from Scotland n it ain't simple minds...... RIP Stuart Much love from Wales plus I own a copy of Restless Natives on DVD ty BC for being such an influence on my life x
I can't bare, that he is gone ...
such an emblematic guitar in my younger times
Sly Stallone's and Vinnie Appice's son is playing keys.
But seriously, thank you for this treat. One of the all-time greatest bands in rock history, and so undervalued here in the U.S. RIP Stuart. Still affected by his death, all these years....
Total legend my saviour and inspiration in my teens your a legend Stuart will always miss you 😔 ❤️
Absolutely brilliant performance from a brilliantly talented band. May God Bless Stuart Adamson.
he was brilliant.
If only bands like this were here now rip Stuart and Coyp
How can anybody not like its just perfect i play all there stuff over and over ' stu its just such a shame ur not here but i i got ur music and that's the best which i thank you for
Why oh why didn’t I see them live when I had the opportunity to see the original lineup with Stuart?
Feel your pain,I have the same regret
They were fantastic live, true to their sound.
unforgetable one of the greatest bands ever r.i.p stuart >
Porrohman is a classic!
Saw them when they were just starting out, hadn't heard of them till then, they came out on stage wearing army fatigues, they were brilliant, bought the first album The Crossing, still love it today, loved them then and always will!
I have a copy of this on DVD having randomly finding it in a shop in Stuttgart, whilst working there. Brilliant as usual, but not too sure about the mullet on keyboards 🤔
Goose bumps start to finish! Thanks for the upload - I loved how they started Fields Of Fire. One of my biggest regrets in life: I never got to see Big Country live... :(
Classic BC. Wonderful vocals from Stuart. As the sun goes down over East Berlin - time for The Seer. Audio damaged in part by the horrendous keyboards. What was management thinking? They add nothing and detract plenty.
Always been a favourite band...they will always be legends in music, one of a kind!
Thanks for this, love the version of restless natives 😆
Is this excellent. Seen them a few times and they really are the best live band you'll ever see if you ever got the chance. His voice I varied a great with it. The are excellent musicians and each time I've seen them they always seemed to really enjoy it. Last time was in a small Dutch town, might be seen as a come down but they played an amazing set on a great night. They played and sounded as great as ever.
Sorely missed to this day.
Dunfermlines finest 🎸🎸
A classic concert indeed. Tuning in now and rockin' out.
The only thing that is out of place here is the keyboard stabs during Steeltown. As much as they tried to fill the sound out with Josh's presence, it just doesn't work with that song at all.
My word the best thing ive ever heard!!
Exactlyl!
WOW que afortunados los que vivieron ésto.
Big Country forever ☝️♥️
State of art
Such an awesome video! A couple of observations:
1) Stuart was in fine voice. Virtually impossible to be such a compelling lead vocalist AND guitarist but he certainly pulled it off.
2) Mark Brescyki is the most underrated drummer of that era. His live playing always sounds like it was multi-tracked and overdubbed simply because he plays like he has four arms.
3) Adding keyboards to BC is like adding tuna fish to a peanut butter sandwich. Actually doesn't taste too bad . . . but why would anyone on earth even consider doing it?
4) Bruce's "Beetlejuice" period was FIRE. :-)
Thanks for posting this!
If you look at BC’s earlier incarnation as a 5-piece you’ll find Pete Wishart on keyboards. So the renowned, popular 4-piece, although prevalent, wasn’t there from the off. I won’t knock the musicianship of the bigger arrangement, although the return of keyboards didn’t persist. Porrohman’s introduction parts seem particularly lost in stark, chime tones rather than the full-fluttering E-bow only versions. I also appreciate many see less, is more.
@@Mudge07 Well put. Thanks!
Well said. He was one of the top sessioners of the 80s in Britain. Only "underrated" by people that didn't understand music and musicians.
Thanks for posting awesome performance, never heard that intro to fields of fire before, just wished Stuart was still with us ,show a few of today's so called musicians what it's all about.Stay Alive.
Brings my heart to tears, but my love for this band burns and burns so bright .Thank you for inspiring me.
By god, the creator or whatever you call nature and the universe, there was hope that night!
What a feckin band! I love listening to the live performances. Where The Rose Is Sown live is superb. Thanks lots for sharing this masterpiece. 🏴
Ich war live dabei und es war ein mega Konzert
I have the dvd of this and I love it! Still my favorite band of all time!
21:20 Just a Shadow. It is 2020 and just now discovering their song "The Shadow". Beautiful song.
love this life version. memories of the past...
wonderful band, awsome tunes here from BC!
Nice band is a greet 80 music
Brilliant, thanks for posting. RIP Stuart.
Big Country were AWESOME. Great live band and great tunes.. is that Ray Von on keyboards ? R R R Ray Von !
And another thing, I don't think Mark Brzezicki got as much credit as he should have. Very underated drummer.
Underrated my sweaty ball sack!! Have you seen the bands he’s recorded with???
@@jumpinjojo HAHA
@@jumpinjojo yes but you never see his name in Best drummer polls it’ always Neil Peart, John Bonham, Keith Moon, Dave Grohl etc where as he should be up there with the best
I bought a bootleg cassette of this gig at the time. It was missing Restless Natives and faded in half way through Where The Rose Is Sown. This left about 15 minutes of the 90 minute cassette, so for some odd reason the seller filled it up with the opening few songs of John Martyn live at Montreux. I think I listened to the John Martyn tracks once then recorded over them with some more BC tracks 😄
Ha! Hilarious 😂
The Harvest Home i have added to this is from a boot with the exact same things - minus John Martyn. 😄
Thx for this. Always great to see Big Country. I was lucky to see them live a few times in the 80s, always wonderful gigs.
Awesome upload Andy 👍
so sad that as his career was taking off his life was falling apart. a true rock star , a very sad loss.
So many great things to enjoy here; First of all the "out of this world" experience of being part of this legendary BC performance. Then reading the interesting thoughts of what feels like an 'intimate BC community' on your channel. Finally being spoiled with a factor of surprise by the special treat you added - not to be found elsewhere. Always totally carried away by your uploads, thanks a million! 😘
Not sure if you guys gives a damn but if you're stoned like me during the covid times you can stream pretty much all the latest movies on Instaflixxer. Have been streaming with my girlfriend for the last couple of weeks xD
@Jagger Cole Yea, I have been watching on InstaFlixxer for since november myself =)
I'll be watching this at the weekend with a few beers, thanks again Andy.
Excellent gig and some fine mullets too. They were of an age.....
Happy to find this gem.
Saw them live on their Final Fling Tour, great night. RIP Stu
Fantastic upload! I still have this concert on DVD, and musta nearly wore the disc out rewatching it over and over in high school. The lads are at the peak of their powers here.

Stuarts Adamson
an Micheal Hutchins of INX left us eat too soon.
esooo chingon. mi banda x siempre hoaaaaa!!!mejores q las bandas de hoy .ya no hay..
Miss the lads. Thanks for sharing
Brilliant as always! Really can't get into the use of keyboards during this period. Adds nothing and if anything distracts from classic songs. Thanks Andy.
I know the band used a slight amount of keyboards on some of their tracks but this is just way too much keyboard for a band so guitar driven yet even during this trying to go more mainstream and commercial period of BC they still sound great. I’m just glad theirs only one version of steeltown with keyboards and those ridiculous back up singers!
We watched our East German friend get arrested by the stasi because we brought him a cheap acoustic guitar to play. This was in 1984. So it makes me very happy to watch this show.
Thank You Andy for sharing this complete concert with us! Very splendid indeed and such a huge enthusiastic crowd.Luv it! Thanks Again😊😊
Awesome upload !! Thanks for this.
I was in Berlin then, but on the West side so I missed it. Dam the Berlin Brigade! I was looking over the wall and they were looking me.
My favourite band - taric end
Thank you!
