You know what? SAME. I've been with my boyfriend for 10 years now, he's way taller than me, and we have not only a strong bond but an undying love for our cat Cosmo, Babette and Morey are definitely goals
You just gave me a wacky idea: if it was ever possible for me to do a group meetup with the people who joined this channel, it would be fun if everyone dressed up as a Stars Hollow resident (or someone else on the show). I know it's not possible but it's a fun idea for a Gilmore Girls party.
Since Lorelai and Rory are absurdly pretty and thin, it's so nice that the rest of the town are average an normal looking people, makes the town feel so much more human and real, you can relate miss Paty or Babette to your own aunts or neighbors or friends. If all the people in town look like models it would feel so fake, and also wouldn't emphasize the point that the Girlmore Girls really do have the "pretty privilege" gen. Today series everyone looks like models or way too perfect.
That's what bothers me about so many movies and shows! Every woman looks like a damn supermodel and it feels fake. The "ugly" or "average" women are still always very pretty- not supermodels, but above average for sure. It's so annoying. I always love a movie/show where the people look real and not like they have their very own make up artist and hair stylist at home.
I think they also did that so that Lorelai and Rory stand out more. Lauren Graham has always been ridiculously beautiful anyway but looks even more so on this show.
@fletcher_athens eh,i adore the women who play them, but the way babette and patty are inappropriate to underage boys, and even to Rory and Lorelei, and how heartIess they are towards an underage guy abandoned by his dad, dumped by his mom to live with his uncle, like, they never even tried to do anything nice for him, like offer him hot chocolate..
i love everything about babette. her name, her face, her hair, her voice, her personality, literally everything. she is divine feminine to me and i want to be like her when i’m older 💗 p.s. the bit about babette and morey’s relationship had me in tears 😭 definitely relationship goals ♡
I agree, Babette is great! She's one of the few women on the show that got a seemingly perfect relationship. She has amazing friends and a great partner.
I have a Miss Patty/Babette in my neighborhood. She is literally like them. And the fact that she knows all the gossip comes from the fact that she talks with everyone, checks on you when things happen and you're always welcome. Miss Patty is a real danceteacher, she reminds me of my old ballet teacher. I love them. They're real and loving.
I imagine that Babette and Miss Patty see themselves as motherly figured to the town, always willing to listen or help, but just slightly overbaring. i love watching their interactions with Luke, especially Babette, i like to think shes known him since he was young and keeps an eye on him
Aw, that's a sweet thought! I really like Babette's scene where she tells Luke about Richard's heart attack. I think she sometimes gets overlooked in that scene. She went to him as soon as she heard the news and then she spent the entire time at Lorelai's house to take care of Paul Anka.
Neighborhood sages if you will. Funny enough, I have a neighbor who is JUST like this. She's in her 70's, retired so home alot (with all her cats), knows everything and everybody in the neighborhood and has all the gossip. Can be slightly annoying at times, yet will do anything for you. When my daughter was sick and my wife and I couldn't take off work, she babysit for days on end and asked for nothing in return. Played games and watch cartoons with her all day, made her soup and eventually baked cookies, etc.. love people like this.
I like that idea! Could Kirk be their little helper that unintentionally messes things up? I also thought that they should have a spinoff, but the spinoff that I was thinking of was a prequel: I would LOVE to see Miss Patty's showbusiness backstory and the interesting experiences that Babette went through. I would also love to see how Babette and Mory met and how Babette and Miss Patty found each other.
I'm right there with you. When couples of the show are discussed, I feel like they get left out sometimes, but I think they are one of the best representations of a loving couple on the show.
They're just the sweetest and seem so in love with each other❤ just 2 happy people living a quiet life with their cats❤ And who can forget Babette's iconic "Bye sugar!" line? 😂
I always thought that Babette and Morey met at a club in New York in the village. She sounds like a Jazz singer to me she was singing he was playing the piano and that’s how they met. I don’t think he was part of a band I think he was a loner and then he met Babette. She already lives in stars hallow which is why the house is built for her size
Hey! Your thoughts are kind of close to mine (although I recognize that they differ in points). I had an entire section that I removed from my video where I had more of my backstory for them; I speculated that they met later in life and likely at a club in NYC. I always end up cropping out half of the things I say. 😵💫I like your take on their relationship!
I read an interesting theory online that East Side Tilly might be Kirk's mom. I feel like that mystery character is ripe for crazy theories, like maybe it's someone that we already met on the show who is secretly creating havoc.
Your commentary on Babette had me tearing up. I've been watching the series since it's tv-airing days, so it's really lovely to have someone write a love letter to some of the many lovely side characters. Do you have any plans to do Kirk? A lot like Ms. Patty and Babette, he has his flaws, but under it all, I think he really does care about the people of Stars Hallow. And like a lot of them, he's protective of both Lorelei and Rory. Taylor would be another great study too. He seems particularly fond of Rory as a daughter-figure when his antics aren't played for comedy. Anyways, there I go blathering about Gilmore Girls again. Great video! I always look for to these
Kirk is most certainly on the list! He might be my favorite. My notes on Kirk are a jumbled mess right now. I need to pull them together into a comprehensive narrative so that I can do that man justice. Taylor is another interesting one; I feel like I've judged Taylor in the past but every time I decide to do a character, I find things that I love, and I always find redeeming qualities. You're absolutely right that Taylor is fatherly to Rory. I also have a theory on Taylor that addresses his quirks. I do have some non-Gilmore Girls characters that I've been wanting to cover so I will be flipping back and forth between Gilmore Girls and other shows, but I promise to be consistent. Thank you for sharing your thoughts! ❤
I don’t think we ever find out who Babette meets first… Patty or Maury. I kind of think it was Patty who very deliberately built up Babette’s self worth and opened the way to her meeting a Maury.
Thank you so much for shining much needed light into Babette, (especially), and miss Patty. I never added up the total sum of Babettes scenes to see that she really is the sweetest.
"She might eat people", I spat out my coffee. I just found your channel and have been loving your content. Also I think the world needs more Buffy content, wink wink.
Fully noted! I really want to do Buffy, that show has been a very big influence on me. There are so many amazing content creators out there that have done Buffy that I've been nervous to touch that show right now. I will most certainly get there. I'm happy you're enjoying the content! 😄
I loved your analysis! I already loved Babette and Miss Patty but now i appreciate their characters in a deeper way and i love them even more ❤ I hope theres more of this series 😊
Thank you! There's definitely more on the way! I will be intermixing with other shows, but I have a lot of characters and ideas for Gilmore Girls that I want to talk about.
My wife and I just rewatched Gilmore Girls. We enjoy talking over the psychological aspects of the show. Your videos are superb. Truly noteworthy work. Hear me now: in your moments of pause, push forward. If you persevere, you'll have UA-cam success. You have the ingredients for it.
I disagree that Miss Patty wasn't "successful". Sucess as "fame and fortune" is an illusion. Real success is "competence and generosity". And Miss Patty excelled on that.
You’re right. Success is subjective ultimately. I was referring to broad entertainment standards, but like you alluded, that is not the ultimate sign of success. She is good at what she does and she loves it, which makes her successful.
Misses Cassini (the lady you said might be eating people) is one of my favourite town characters, the way she clocks Taylor for the tupee is *mua* chef's kiss :P I have been really enjoying your videos, i love your commentary, keep up the content! New sub here.
Hi! Thank you for saying that. ☺I really appreciate it. It took me longer to record one of my more recent videos because I kind of got in my head about sounding like a robot. I am doing much better now though and I'm letting it go. 😅I still want to keep working on sounding better, however. Always room for improvement.
@PensiveWhiskers just the truth 😌 that's a good attitude to have, but try not to get too in your head about it. I've never thought you sounded robotic, it was quite surprising to see the comments 😂
@PensiveWhiskers I do think there's room for improvement in the audio quality though, if/when you upgrade your equipment. Otherwise, your videos are great and heartfelt 🥺
Thank you! Definitely agree with you on the audio quality. That's something that I want to fix. I have my eyes on a really good microphone which I am saving up for. In the meantime, I know there are other things I can do to improve the sound, which I will keep learning.
Just found your channel, and i love your background stories for the characters. I've watched this show so many times and really enjoy the new take. Thank you😊
-Babette is a sweet lady but a nightmare of a neighbor. Too nosey and, OMG, that voice! LOL -No, I don't find the scene where Patty and Kirk are dancing weird. Haven't you ever danced with a friend?
Thank you!!! 😄 That's currently my goal; to highlight the significance and value of each character, even if they are secondary characters. I'm also totally open to alternative theories!
I don't think I see Lorelai and Rory as Babette's replacement for Cinnamon, since they were already close, which is why Lorelai is such a big part of organising the wake. I personally think it's more likely that Babette chose to sort of 'take them in' when Lorelai got the house. Lorelai would have been 26-27, we don't know if they had different housing between the shed and the house Lorelai bought, but it does seem like Mia had maybe left or was maybe planning on leaving, which would have left Lorelai without or fearing the departure of a foundational part of her support system, along with just the stress of moving into a new place with a 10 year old. Babette is already a caring person, and seeing a woman who's vulnerable to the same potential dangers that she was vulnerable to (partner abuse, cult recruitment), and probably wanted to help keep them safe. And Babette and Morrey are absolute relationship goals. They go on walks with Cinnamon in a wagon dressed up like it's a carriage, I love that. I also personally always liked Babette's voice, but I'm guessing I'm in the minority ... (maybe not when she yells, but whose voice sounds good when they're yelling?)
Yeah, you're right. I think I fudged up my analysis there. I think they were her Cinnamon all along. I also like Babette's voice. I had no idea people didn't like it.
@@PensiveWhiskers eh, it's at most a minor fudge-up, it doesn't derail your analysis of the relationship between Babette, Lorelai and Rory, and it's a nice phrase
Miss Patty and Babette seem to have almost zero empathy, Patty showing Lorelai's photo around to people without Lorelai's permission, and Babette always mean and heartIess when talking about an underage boy abandoned by his father ad rejected by his mother, dumped to live with his uncle Luke, Babette and Patty highfive when he's forced out of town..
I think that Babette needs to mind her own business, if I had her as a neighbour I would move. I like Miss Patty's sassiness and her flirting was hilarious.
I really liked this ive been watching the show like properly for the first time and i love babbette i know shes kinda nosey but she feels very motherly to the girls. And i think thats a sentiment the main group of the town has. Lorelai came to town very young so i wonder sometimes if they just took to being family because she had none at the time.
@@PensiveWhiskers He's always so mysterious but he's a good man because he is dedicated to Babette. I'd like to hear more theories about his history and why he is so tolerant of Babette's crazy ideas, like hanging him till he passes out at Halloween.
I get why people don't like Babette's voice it's not enough to me to dislike a character but I grew up watching anime and anime has much more grating voices than hers so maybe im desensitized.
I haven’t seen All In the Family but I found clips of it while doing research for this video. There’s an episode of All In the Family where Liz Torres (Miss Patty) is on with Sally Struthers (Babette). I was going to include it but I cut the segment out from the video.
This was an excellent video. Personally, I've always loved Babette in particular, especially because I think she acts a bit as a foil to Emily(hear me out). She occupies this place in relation to Rory and Lorelai of an older, almost familial figure. Both Emily and Babette consistently show how much they care about Rory and Lorelai. Any time a huge event happens in both of their lives, both are very invested in it. Emily, however, shows this caring through manipulating them. Babette, on the contrary, is always caring and supportive of whatever choices they make as opposed to Emily's near-constant criticism, especially of Lorelai. Emily expects to be read in on any life events immediately and generally responds with either congratulations or criticism based on her opinion; Babette doesn't expect to hear of them immediately(with the exception of the backpacking trip) and responds always with emotional support. I think that, in a way, Babette symbolizes what a grandparent-grandchild relationship and parent-adult child should more resemble.
If Lorelei didn't want Miss Patty to show the picture to men that Miss Patty believed could be good match for her, wouldn't Lorelei have kindly and politely asked her to stop? And wouldn't Miss Patty have stopped?
I don’t know if I’m the only one who thought this (I think I probably am wrong about this) but I used to think Taylor and Ms Patty had interest in each other. After rewatching a bunch of times, I think they’re probably more of friends/coworkers but I used to think this. Both Babette and Ms Patty are pretty likable
I think they had the potential to be a couple because they share a lot of scenes together; that would have been really interesting actually. Ultimately, the show did go in a different direction and the revival confirms this, but I think it would have been pretty cool to see.
Just a suggestion- maybe a video on Paris ? I know a lot of people like her but I look at her like a bully, she is unnecessarily rude to everyone especially Brad. She fought with rory over tristan without even knowing the whole thing and same happened with the whole editor thing. She has a lot of good scenes though
Paris would be a very interesting character to cover, a few people have requested her as well. That's a good suggestion. 🙂For right now, I wanted to focus on smaller characters or smaller topics when it comes to characters. I will get to the bigger ones like Paris, once I feel more confident in my skills.
Aw wow. Yeah i think Gilmore Girls thought at the time they were being progressive somehow in making women like Miss Patty and Louise objectify men the way misogynistic men do to women & girls. Or at least it's "harmless" and funny like their many homophobic and transphobic jokes throughout the series. Definitely problematic at moments for sure. As for questionable teaching methods, what immediately comes to mind is how she threatened the kids that if the Harry Potter books fall off their heads that Harry will die and there won't be any more books 😅😂. She was also who Rory told Dean to go to in the pilot when he was looking for a job. Because she knows of every potential job opening in town. I think you're absolutely right that the town comes to rely on their gossip. Lmao about the 3rd woman and your out of nowhere cannibalism comment, love it. I really didn't expect the softness and even sadness revealed on your analysis of Babette and that side of things is definitely going to shape my viewing of her going forward. You've made her grow on me more as a character because of how you psychoanalyzed her. I think she was written in to be comedic in various ways that aren't actually that funny when you think about the reality of being so anxious or having a voice that naturally (or after years of smoking etc) sounds a way that many people find annoying. Also watching this reminds me that she may be yet ANOTHER female character on this series in addition to Lorelai, Rory, Lane, Sookie, and maybe Paris and April who kinda vibes ADHD to me. Love your observations and theories about Morey too! This was really great.
That is a funny moment from Miss Patty (re: Harry Potter). I should have put that in. The cannibalism comment is a Buffy reference, it's very obscure but I couldn't help myself. :)
i always wondered if the two actresses worked together in the past. Glmor grls shows a lot of respect for old hollywood/literature/jazz, etc etc. i totally teared up while you talked about Babette 🫶
The two actresses did work together in the past! They both appeared in All in the Family in 1976/1977. I had a whole section about the actresses and their amazing careers, but I ended up cutting it out. I was going to include a clip where they are together in "All in the Family." Honestly, with Babette, my perspective on her changed so much. I never noticed her backstory before. When I was watching only Babette's scenes, I couldn't believe how much she expressed her love and care in almost every scene. I really started to feel it. By the time I got to the Paul Anka scene, and she took off her coat, I was tearing up. It's such a small thing but it shows so much about a character. You can even see how cold she is in that scene, but she tells Lorelai that everything is ok. Your comment makes me feel like I was able to show people what I saw when I looked at this character. I really appreciate it. ☺
I've spent my life wanting to be a Rory, then a Lorelei...only to finally find peace that I'm a Babette.
Hahahaha, I think we should all aspire to have a little Babette in us. She's so much more caring than I realized.

@@PensiveWhiskers eh, it's at most a minor fudge-up, it doesn't derail your analysis of the relationship between Babette, Lorelai and Rory, and it's a nice phrase
babette reminds me of paulette from legally blonde
Miss Patty and Babette seem to have almost zero empathy, Patty showing Lorelai's photo around to people without Lorelai's permission, and Babette always mean and heartIess when talking about an underage boy abandoned by his father ad rejected by his mother, dumped to live with his uncle Luke, Babette and Patty highfive when he's forced out of town..
Love this duo😊
I think that Babette needs to mind her own business, if I had her as a neighbour I would move. I like Miss Patty's sassiness and her flirting was hilarious.
"She might be eating people". Where my people who got that joke at???
I really liked this ive been watching the show like properly for the first time and i love babbette i know shes kinda nosey but she feels very motherly to the girls. And i think thats a sentiment the main group of the town has. Lorelai came to town very young so i wonder sometimes if they just took to being family because she had none at the time.
That's an excellent point! I could definitely see how Babette and Miss Patty became motherly toward Lorelai given when Lorelai arrived.
I'd love to see a video about Morey! I love Gilmore Girls and I really enjoy your videos.
That is a good idea! He is a very small character so I might need to make a mini-episode on him.
@@PensiveWhiskers He's always so mysterious but he's a good man because he is dedicated to Babette. I'd like to hear more theories about his history and why he is so tolerant of Babette's crazy ideas, like hanging him till he passes out at Halloween.
Maybe Morey was the original town troubadour but met and fell in love with Babette!
I get why people don't like Babette's voice it's not enough to me to dislike a character but I grew up watching anime and anime has much more grating voices than hers so maybe im desensitized.
Same, it’s not enough for me to dislike a character. I never even noticed her voice until people brought it up.
10:55 I understood the Buffy Reference!
I loved Babette's actress in All in the Family! Clearly the best part of that show.
I haven’t seen All In the Family but I found clips of it while doing research for this video. There’s an episode of All In the Family where Liz Torres (Miss Patty) is on with Sally Struthers (Babette). I was going to include it but I cut the segment out from the video.
Absolutely love this review ! Thank you ❤
I'm happy you enjoyed it! Stars Hollow wouldn't be the same without Miss Patty and Babette.
I never liked Babette's voice, but she and Maury were the coolest couple.
And Miss Paty was a great character
Miss Patty flirting with Dean is understandable as he was a cutie so can’t blame her for that
I caught that Buffy reference. 😉
Omg the cat at the end 😭😭
OMG was that a Buffy reference? I think the 3rd gossiper ate people on Buffy. 😂
Yes! 😄 I am a devoted Buffy fan, if I could put a Buffy reference in all of my videos, I would. I'm going to do another Buffy video next.
@@PensiveWhiskers I saw your response just today. I love that that’s the case! She might be eating people. 🤣
I never got the impression that there was an implication that Ms. Patty was "unsuccessful." Quite the opposite, actually.
That is a really good comparison. I can completely see it. Babette is the other side of the coin of Emily.
@@PensiveWhiskers I totally agree! It would have been interesting. True. Oh the revival, another story for another day 🤦♀️
I love them I love them sooo so much 🥲💜 they are just so sweeeet 🥲
"i think she's eating people" your jokes are sneak up on ya
Hahahaha, I try. 😆
Best couple on the show!!
If I ever make a top 5 friendship video on Gilmore Girls, they would for sure make the list.
not a product of the time. her unwelcome flirting was not considered ok in the year 2000, which is modern times.
not considered any more ok than it is in 2023.
Good video 👍
Ops
i always wondered if the two actresses worked together in the past.
I was going to include a clip where they are together in "All in the Family."
Honestly, with Babette, my perspective on her changed so much.
