- Amid San Diego’s housing crisis, some residents are raising concerns over where new affordable housing is being built. People living in southeast San Diego say adding more low-income housing in the area is concentrating poverty.
Multiple affordable housing projects are coming to southeast San Diego. Housing for veterans on 47th street in Chollas View, a 137 unit apartment on Market Street for seniors, more than 100 new units coming to Naranja St, newly renovated senior housing on Logan Avenue and the Encanto Gateway Project.
"We should be looking at areas of highest opportunity so they can flourish and live their best lives," said Robert Campbell who lives in Encanto.
He says bringing more low-income housing into the area isn’t going to help.
“There was only certain types of people that could purchase in Encanto for many years and underinvestment in infrastructure as well," Campbell said.
The state defines Chollas View and Encanto as “low resource” areas. They have higher poverty rates and lower employment levels.
Meanwhile, the county has told CBS 8 that areas such as 4588 Market Street in Chollas View is appropriate for affordable housing. Andrea, who lives in the area, fears the impacts of concentrating poverty.

What's this OUT-OF-PLACE MUSIC in the background for? This is not a marketing presentation, according to the content.
😂😂😂😂
Came here just to say this. Fire your editor or producer!
That music 🤣🤣
How about affordable housing on a golf course, or in a country club? Proposed A/H in Encinitas is meeting stiff opposition because it would enable hundreds of DAY LABORERS to just walk out the door and start lining the streets looking for work. Do we want to de-gentrify San Diego and make it a giant barrio like Escondido? We're building housing for the HOMELESS, and we're already complaining before it's even finished!
We need houses cheaper, man we don't need rents 😔
Residents of La Jolla have no desire to allow people from high crime areas move into their neighborhoods.
Good luck getting any progress done with a city full of Nimbys.
That’s the real problem. No one has the will to throw actual solutions to the situation. Would rather pat themselves on the back after a shameful photo opportunity
City full of racist hypocrites
Rich, exclusive neigborhoods are the problem.
Unfortunately you cannot expect a developer to provide affordable housing if land costs are too high. They must make some profit or there is no reason for them to participate. Fundsthat come from developer fees should be used by the city to help lower the land acquisition costs for projects that can be built in all communities to help achieve diversity.
We have too much diversity as it is.
You could Eminent Domain the property and build high rises with ocean views.
@@tristanwwsd Sounds rather MAGA racist to me. Everyone here alive came from immigrants!
Your not going to tackle affordable housing by building them in La Jolla. It would cost over $1 million a unit.
The people in La Jolla don't want to live next to poor people... Can you see Mitt Romney living next to an apartment building?
@@SeanD808Low income housing
projects equals crime hubs.
only 5% of the new housing has to be low income units.
None of these homes will go to American citizens.
this is San Diego bud immigrants are part of the economy
Crime is going to skyrocket in these areas. These people better bail if they can.
You don’t steal in the area you live
With the amount of cameras neighbors have you’ll get dealt with one way or another
Lol r u aware of the SE? Crime already up
@@N2UPROD Not true. Where I live there is very little crime. But in poor areas crime is high.
Waiting on capitalist solutions to any problem will be a very long wait.
I love how people blame capitalism for their poor choices
@TsarAndroNovaVonTacoCat I smell bot. I love how people refuse to believe or admit that their precious little system is failing. Capitalism is the reason housing is out of control.
@BillionaireTaxEvader Supply and demand is why housing is high. And it's not my precious little system. We have monopoly capitalism. Run by the corrupt federal reserve. And they run on debt to keep us enslaved. I would go on, but you have the understanding of a useful idiot.
Blaming capitalism for redlining, racial loan covenants, and segregation the levels we have now. Yeah that makes sense andro
@eriks8382 Red lining because they knew your a poor credit risk. I don't give loans to dead beats
right. put them in Del mar, La Jolla, Rancho Sante Fe??
Why should wealthy people be punished with new residents who will increase crime rates?
Yes!
as someone who grew up working class in San Diego, this would NOT be helpful. I feel like if anything Downtown, North/SouthPark would be helpful. La Jolla, Del Mar, and Rancho Santa Fe are all extremely exclusive, both by cost of living/prices AND by location. I did not have a car growing up and getting around places like Scripps Ranch was not it. You NEED a car for those places. The more walkable areas can provide way more benefit
Politicians know they need to approve affordable housing or they will be out of a job next election.
Somebody thinks there shit don’t stink word is it smells horrible
They get burned down before this stage in Oakland.
It's always NIMBY except if you go waaay out into the rural areas
Leave any area that builds Section-8 welfare project buildings like this... sell and move
They all rent, cause they are deadbeats who are late to the game
Cool with me leave me the ocean views
Home builders not in a business of charity.
They have to make profit
In order to stay in business.
Shouldn't be that way.
Saw them building one across the street from a crack den looking house. im sure it will be universes colliding
That shit is happening nation wide. Here in Tampa Bay is out of control. GREAT JOB ILLUMINATI!
Could you provide specificity?
Commit to density....like Mumbai.
All this whining about building more housing is exactly why housing is so expensive and we have a homeless problem.
There is no "affordable housing" lol!
Aye I work in those jobs site . Whooo🎉🎉🎉🎉
Aww poor boo boo
I am hungry and have no employment anywhere nearby, the food at the grocery store is not in its best quality...when the price is reduce the food is no longer eatable but we eat it any ways and causes diarrhea...
Then don't eat it.... Seriously 😳
Ok Robert then what do you suggest we do, stand in the sun and photosynthesize?
Plenty of free food banks in San Diego. Find them.
keep them out
Low income areas are freakin packed with people, no parking!! Infested with people that are not from sd
University Heights has started to go downhill. Never saw graffitti here until very recently.
