I held off doing this one as a video already exists of it, but I recently checked out the first couple of minutes and saw that it allowed the use of Magic Stones. It may be 100% necessary to use them to complete the game, but given the madness that ensued (and educational value) of no-junction FFVIII Attack Only, I wanted to push the challenge a little further with my own take on it, and not allow the use of Magic Stones for as long as possible.
The series will be similar in approach to FFX Auto Battle, with a voiceover style as opposed to real-time commentary, tighter editing to remove much of the excess and fortnightly episodes to give the series more structure and provide something for people to look forward to.
Whether you are going to wait for each episode or binge it all afterwards, I appreciate you taking the time to check this mini series out!

No magic stones? i feel one upped here! nice explanation on the stat growths aswell, having done the run though im pretty sure i know where this is gonna end and im really looking forward to seeing if you can get past it with no stones used
Yeah my guess is gizamaluke will be a huge pain, but doable. Soul Cage is probably the hard limit of no magic stones. Mustard bomb is nasty.
@@PrimalLIQUID Yeah I can see all of that. I guess I was assuming he'd throw away the no stones rule before overlevelling since overlevelling kinda makes the whole game easy, especially on the steam version where you can cheese the chocobo minigame to get a ton of robe of lords and stuff. FF9 is just one of those games that the status effects are just game ending. I think the better spirit for this run would be to attack only, only status preventing magic stones allowed. BTW love your videos.

Hey great video and excited for the rest of the series! But did you know in the Ice Cave you can avoid those fights by not walking through the mist? You need to wait for the mist to stop then run through.
The mist represents the beasts… so you can avoid the beasts by avoiding the mists.
Ok but the thumbnail is adorable. Can’t wait to see this challenge.
My prediction is that Steiner is going to be the MVP thanks to his Trance ability and the blood sword. It is just a pity that he vanishes for so much of the game (one of my few gripes with this game tbh.)

There it starts. A challenge i did myself once because FFIX is my favorite game of all time. I am happy and excited to see Berk doing this challenge and how he does it compared to me. I wish everyone a great time watching this series because i for sure will.

Others may have already said this. Against the sealion the Blizzara and Tsunami attacks are counter attacks used automatically when its health gets below certain amounts (corresponding to the color changes of the gem in its chest). That's why it got two attacks in a row, since the counters are triggered immediately. There are other bosses that have similar strategies that could make this challenge extra tough. Should be fun to watch 😊

Oh man, I'm surprised. FFIX doesn't mess around with the leveling system. I knew about equipment altering stat gain, but I had no idea it pretty much controlled everything. I love that you're attempting the same challenge on several entries in the series. It really reveals all of the unique tweaks to the battle system in each game.

I always try to use attacks in FF9 cause the animations take forever to load for spells and summons and what have you

The fight against Steiner on the airship with the bomb behind him is just timed, it goes much much faster if you K.O everyone but garnet at the start.
Despite it showing damage numbers you cant actually hurt Plant Brain until Blank shows up which is on a timer OR if Zidane's hp drops into the yellow (or apperently you somehow manage to deal 916 damage), afterwhich its HP changes to 418, much easier to handle and on a normal run killable with the fire sword magic spell since Steiner's sword magic accuracy is not effected by the Blind status effect. edit : just saw your note on how it works which dose help, but prefer just dropping Zidane's hp to yellow to make blank appear.
I also wanna say, I really like the fact you didnt do extensive research into the deeper levels of the system before you started. I already knew about the stat growth when I did the Attack Only challenge.
I also made sure to get that 10k gil ans moonstone. 😂
EDIT: Also I think I managed Prison Cage at level 9, but I got lucky with crits.
I never really knew how they gained stats through what they have equipped.
I usually just equip the weakest gear they have until they master the ability of the piece of equipment, then move on to the next strongest.
By the end of the game, they all would be able to do max damage, at least the ones I used mostly for damage like Zidane, Steiner, Freya etc
Yes in a normal playthrough you do not look at this system and I do the same and at the end it's not that big of a deal stat wise. But since in this challenge no magic stones are used this system is good to use since you lose damage from stuff like the killers

Hi Berk, just wondering, would you ever consider trying Final Fantasy XI sometime? Obviously it’s an MMO so nobody expects you to dedicate a let’s play to it or something but I think a stream of you trying it out could be a fun idea. And who knows, if you like it, you can stream some more of it.☺️

Cleared this challenge on a randomizer while back with even boss having random abilities my god it was painful a lot of wipes, i suggest if people want a challenge try the unleashed mod or alternate fantasy mod.

I am not doing a FFXII (Zodiac Job System) Empty handed run. No weapon of any kind. It sounds a bit weird and hard at first but once you get into it, it's not that hard. I am currently trying to see if I can get the Hunter Marks and Summons (Espers)
"For any given attack, Zidane has a 5% chance of scoring a critical hit."
This is actually incorrect, since random numbers are selected in sequence from a table. Citing some comments on a TAS run:
Spirit 16-23 = 0/256 (there are no random numbers that give the desired outcome!)
Spirit 24-27 = 6/256
Spirit 28-31 = 9/256
Spirit 32-35 = 4/256 (yes, the actual crit rate goes down!)
Fortunately, Zidane reaches 24 Spirit at level 7, allowing crits just under 2.5% of the time. Damage range is 46-52, which under Trance is 69-78. Steiner's range is 48-54 in this fight. The damage ranges turn out to be barely relevant- at level 7 Zidane needs 2 crits in 4 opportunities (critting on the lone untranced attack doesn't cost too much damage, assuming average damage overall) which is about 1/300.
I put together a spreadsheet and a 2 crit fight wins most of the time at level 7, same odds at level 8, slightly better at level 9, and virtually guaranteed at level 10. If both crits are during trance, victory is guaranteed at level 7 unless literally every single damage roll is the minimum possible value.
For a 1 crit fight, level 12 is the break-even point where given a Trance crit, getting average damage rolls is sufficient: this will happen about 1 in 30 attempts. Level 13 confers no benefit, while level 14 makes the odds much better than even to roll high enough on the variance (about 1 in 20 fights) and even allows the potential for a win with the crit on Zidane's non-trance attack, if damage rolls averaged high.
Just for fun, I also worked out at what level a 0 crit fight is winnable, and the first such point is level 20, albeit at very low odds (missing at most 10 potential damage). They get better at level 23 (but still worse than going for a crit) and 24 (now more likely than a crit) but don't break even until level 27!
In summary: crits are a bit messier than the formula indicates, and for anyone else wanting to do this challenge themselves, stop at level 12. Or if you really want to micro-optimize stats, level 7 is still mandatory. Remember, leveling up characters *now* raises average party level, causing other characters to join at higher level and miss potential stat boosts.
If you're wondering how this affects Black Waltz 1, a level 7 Zidane that gets Trance after attacking Black Waltz 1 once (like in the video) will take the same number of attacks as the level 14 Zidane. Level 7 Zidane also has 319 max HP, and the fight shown has Zidane take 288 damage. So the answer is: what level you get past Prison Cage at does not affect Black Waltz 1.
Lol some comments saying this will be impossible/really really hard and others saying it will be extremely easy. Let’s see who’s right!

Perhaps only using magic stones if you have an item equipped with the ability would be a good compromise
What about Trance? Have you considered disabling it? It gives very large attack boosts to several characters. By the time you have Steiner in Trance, the bosses just die. Zidane gets a big attack buff too, I think.

Great start to the new series, been looking forward to this one. I expect there to be some interesting encounters and boss battles. Perhaps not as complex as 8 but none the less enjoyable i imagine, i think taking the magic stones out is a really good call
I can promise there will be especially without magic stones that take away your immunity to some status ailments.
Will you be banning the use of Chocobos as well to start off with? It might seem like a weird thing to ban but you've already banned the use of 'steal' which gives early access to equipment prior to it being available in shops. Chocobo hot and cold gives access to two pieces of equipment that break the game very early on particularly for mages. Chocographs typically are similar to steal in that they often give early access to equipment and later on give access to ultimate equipment (the ban will likely get lifted at some point similar to magic stones but keeping it for as long as possible would be interesting to see similar to the restrictions imposed in FF8).
I did this challenge once and I did something like that. I banned on using stuff like the Robe you can buy or the Ragnarok until the final dungeon since you can (especially the robe with speed up) get them before disc 4 very easy and kinda make the terra/pandemonium section a lil easier. But at then end it didn't made a big deal with some stuff and berk should decide it himself.

Well knowing of how Ozma works it's impossible of doing it without the friendlies Sidequest. But even with it I tried it and couldn't pull it off. So this is besides Tantarian a thing I would like to see.

I reckon if we're just comparing FF7, 8, 9 and 10, FF9 is by far the hardest in terms of main story/questline.
If you know what you're doing in a normal playthrough, you probably wont be getting KO'd at all in 7, 8 or 10 - or if you do it'll be countable on one hand.
FF9 there are plenty of bosses who just hit like trucks - added to the fact that phoenix downs only restore 1-9HP, it creates deathloops all the time.
This could be interesting and maybe more challenging than FF8 only attack, whereas FFX had a bevvy of status aliments weapons could have on them and the weapon modifying, FF8 had the whole Zombie reduction and battle scaling dependant on team level.
FF9 however does not have the above, we have some weapons with status and elemental attacks but the GOOD ones have a very very low chance of hitting, but what is most intriguing is the steal system being off the table, on one hand yes, you will be unable to get potent equipment and weapons early. but you can focus on attacking the boss and not "Couldn't steal anything"
The BIGGEST add though is Chocobo's considering disc 3 is where you can enter lagoon and later get golden Chocobo, you can get so amazing upgrades (let alone the chocobo store) HOWEVER no Blue magic would mean Quina is..un-needed till disc 2 but S/he's fork can do high melee damage.
Then there's front and back row weapon abilities (like long reach) and juggling ability points..i think the "hardest" part will be desert palace since you would take Zidane-Steiner-Amarant with you to face Ark...and with no healing it could be interesting...oh and the Amarant fight solo with Zidane.

I did this challenge and can confirm not stealing isn't that big of a problem. You will probably grind anyway so the stuff you can't steal can be bought later anyway. Yes the weapons status or elements can be useful but not really necessary in a long run. About the chocobo I banned the use of the rope or weapons like the Ragnarok until disc 4. They not that big of a deal if you get them on disc 3 only make the terra/pandemonium section a lil easier but it's up to Berk to decide what he does with it. About the desert temple for me it wasn't. I use Steiner for the desert temple anyway and he is pretty good against the boss especially after you weaken him by taking all items. Ark is a problem without magic stones to use for confusion immunity or the 1hp attack but doable. I personally had more problems with the disc 2 situation after you rescued dagger since from that up until amarant Zidane is the only one doing good damage. But I am excited to see how Berk does against all this and what is strategy is about all of this.
FF9 attack only doesn't seem too difficult. That's basically how I played it as a kid anyway, lol

I can confirm that some fights can be brutal and In need of many retries especially without magic stones.
Why aren’t you using the x2 or whatever option? It allows for speeding up the combat.
Love it, but PLEASE use the original music! Personally, having to listen to the orchestral arrangement is genuinely painful :(

I much prefer the orchestral arrangements, for whatever it's worth. Are there components that are difficult for those with auditory processing issues?

Unfortunately due to FF9 beeing the easiest of all FF, its easy to finish this challenge. Especially if u think about that in the last dungeon, u still are able to survive so many attacks with lv1 characters -.-
Equipment is a big deal and in a challenge like this good to have in mind when weaker equipment has resistance, Absorption or some status ailments that help in certain fights. I think lich is the best example where you can avoid or get healed by his earthquake.
