Show Notes:
[1:00] Jordan Peterson kicks off the conversation by asking why and how Matthew McConaughey wrote his book Greenlights.
[4:00] Matthew realized he needed to write the book himself without a ghostwriter as initially planned and dig back into his journals as a form of necessary reflection on the past.
[6:00] Matthew’s old journals revealed their common thread through all the stories, poems, and bumper stickers. That common thread was the creation of good things in life through mindset or action “Greenlights.”
[12:00] Jordan talks about his initial response after reading Matthew’s book and how his expectations were changed.
[14:00] Matthew talks about his solo trips when starting to create the structure of his book. Jordan comments that this was a book written by a celebrity that did not really focus on the traditional parts of being a celebrity (very family-focused and foundational). Matthew states, “When we were editing the book, I found that the more personal the stories became, the more relatable they seemed to become, to the human condition, and that was my hope.”
[18:00] Jordan and Matthew revisit the African trip, chasing dreams and having the same exact dream multiple times over the span of many years.
[24:00] What was the personal impact on Matthew during his trip to Africa where he got to strip away the identity we all know him for and exist as something else? Jordan comments that very often, people confuse their reputation with who they really are, and they start to act as a representation of their reputation instead of themselves; it’s an easy trap to fall into.
[22:00] Matthew discusses dealing with the pitfalls of fame. Matthew covers his changing relationship with his mother due to success.
[25:00] Jordan B. Peterson asks Matthew McConaughey about some of his acting work in True Detective and playing dark characters. “How do you play a dark role very well without letting the darkness invade you?”
[32:00] Matthew talks about the positive aspects of the sometimes tense relationship with his father and having a childhood that balanced love and hardship directed from the same people.
[37:00] Jordan and Matthew continue talking about going deeper into the psychology of a dark character like Rustin Cole on True Detective
[45:30] Matthew expanded on the short-term effects of initial fame.
[51:30] Matthew and Jordan discuss the long-term effects of fame.
[55:00] Jordan points out, “If flawed people were incapable of creativity, we would have no creativity.”
[1:03:00] How Matthew and Jordan first became friends.
[1:07:30] Matthew shares a comical review of his own book written as if Jordan was the one reviewing it.

One of the best interviews I’ve seen. Thanks, gentlemen.
You should interview Mitch Horowitz about his new book " The Miracle Habits "
I missed you, Mr. Jordan Peterson. It's great to see you. The world needs you.
Matthew describing his attempt to understand his characters antagonist is a very good description of how shadow work can be done effectively.
Welcome back Dr. Peterson, Im so grateful your doing better physically; the world needs more men like you to speak up.
People are saying Matthew is alt- right for doing this interview when we all know that he is just plain alright, alright, alright.
I am going to subscribe to your channel based only on this one quick-witted comment so make sure that you produce!

They said that before this interview because he won’t bend over to the left
After acting in multiple feature films Matthew Mcconaughey thought to himself what should I do next? Then it dawned on him.

OH snap CodPast! love your videos
These are the kind of conversations I yearn for in my own life. It’s nice to see they can be had.
Haha, me, too. I like you. Ditto and snap.
Likewise.
I have a girlfriend, and we will talk 4 - 6 - maybe 8 hours at time.
Jordan's interviews of diverse people feed my intellect and my soul.
Thank you, Dr Peterson!
@toolboxtidbits5674 Jeez how do you work and eat and sleep 😆 🤣
Two deep and thoughtful gentlemen sharing a fantastic conversation with the world. Also love that genuine, almost moving, mutual respect and appreciation expressed especially at the end.
Indeed, very moving. Was a fantastic convo.
Totally Agree!!
All I see is another pseudo intellectual hollywood moron trying to position himself for a political run and ingratiate himself to the people he'll screw over the minute he gets to D.C. - thankfully his experiment about running for office didn't go anywhere.
Yes. Such a pleasure to see
I knew when this popped up on my feed, it was going to be so good because of these two. GOLD!
The fact that Jordan is talking openly to Matthew is incredible, but the fact the Jordan is on his way back from hell is just extraordinary. Please accept this virtual warm hearted welcome back Jordan.
What exactly happened to Peterson?
@@user-yn2ct2ie9m Amid the stress of his position in the world and some tragedy in his family, he began taking stress reducing medication. He became physically dependent on said meds and as a result, even after breaking free of them, still struggles to do even basic tasks or achieve physical comfort for any extended period of time. He is battling.
@@milo8425
It might be useful to note that this was prescribed medication by his doctor that shouldn't have been used but for a relatively brief time to avoid the physical addiction. So in a way mis-prescribed in fact.
@@user-yn2ct2ie9m he was misprescribed benzodiazepines by his doctor as stress relief medication. Benzos may have the worst physical dependency effects, because they change the way the nervous system works. As far as I know, Mr. Jordan Peterson still has side effects almost a year clean of benzos. Also, to stop taking them he ended up needing to go to Russia and then an eastern European country which I can't remember the name of right now. That was because every clinic in both USA and Canada could NOT successfully get him off benzos. Money was no problem, just that the west did not have the knowledge. Seems they only prescribe them, and don't know how to get people off benzos once they get physically addicted.
@@turceapaulandrei I roger that
Dr Peterson is looking better, I'm happy for him.
And for us.
Looks like Martin Scorsese to me but I'm happy as long as he is healthy
Indeed, he's looking better. Take care man, we need you!
he does look better! Bring back the Beard. Bring back Scruffy Jordan.
He really is looking a bit more like his old self.
Dr Peterson, I appreciate you so, so much. I'm so thankful that I can attend your "classes" on the internet, in the form of podcasts, or watching you interview other people. Selfishly, I get soooo much therapy and learning just by watching how you interact with others. Your modeling of the correct example for those of us out here trying to understand and fumble with the same gifts that you have mastered, is such a gift. Thank you, sir. You are a blessing in everyone's life.
Why selfishly? This is why he's doing it publicly! Hah. For people to learn and grow and be more introspective and think of things from different angles
Have to be honest, I feel guilty for listening to his lectures for free too
Well said!
Thank you, Dr Peterson! For being born in our lifetime
I have journals dating back a while. Lost track. The important thing is to move forward. I encourage people to look back and reflect on their life. To change themselves by adopting ideas that challenge them. Many will not because they don't want to change. They want to be the victim and blame others for their problems. Those people will always stay put but those who are willing to go through it will find a better solution to their problems. Journaling, reading books, that includes mein kampf and the communist manifesto, the gulag archipelago, etc. Yeah, these things must be taught so history is not repeated but I believe these bad intentions that were created are already here. The political parties with corporate leaders also want a utopia but only Jesus will instill that. Any government officials that claim they are for the people, are actually forcing us to become future slaves...interesting enough, we have slept too long and we are paying for it now.
Pure and utter gold. What a beautiful thing seeing these two brilliant people dive beyond the surface and find the greenlights.
I’ve been an asshole lately judging Matthew because of his motivational speeches and I feel guilty not knowing anything about him..like “you are not a victim” thinking what does he know? A handsome, hugely successful movie star that has everything, what does he know about feeling victimized until I read and heard all of the terrible things he’s been through..I feel so bad, he’s a very strong person..I would never have the mental strength to push through the shit he’s been through
It’s so easy to have a victim mentality and push yourself out of it like he did
I really like Matthew alot, he is down to earth and very intelligent
I'll never forgive him for missing the opportunity to title his book "I'll Write, I'll Write, I'll Write"
you know he's probably sick of that shit lol
who wants to live out an old meme over and over and over ad nauseum

@Chris Jacobs I believe it's a reference to the opening chapter of his book where he talks about lobsters and how scientists have studied their nervous system to draw parallels with the human nervous system :)
LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
Every conversation Dr Peterson has, where there is mutual respect, is an invitation to be vulnerable. That’s why he is such an amazing therapist.
Jordan Peterson causally denying the nihilism ideology so effortlessly is pure genius. “If your objection to life is it’s suffering, adopting an attitude that will make that suffering worse is probably not a reasonable solution”
Yeah loved this response - He’s not needing to judge and diminish the speaker of nihilism he’s just stating an observation.
“Optimism is survival “ Matthew
Dude's a Zen Master Jedi
Nihilism says that suffering outweighs momentary satisfaction. Suffering is the fundamental mode of all human beings. Recognizing this is not making anything worse, if anything this puts ascetiscm and reasoning into the foreground and promotes not just blindly following your will to live.
Why did Jordan Peterson cross the road? The answer isn't obvious. It's no joke man
Well, it depends on what do you mean by the "road"...
@@pawelzabicki7785 This is hilarious. I hope he reads this comment.
I think the road is full of presumptions and felt crossed despite Jordan Peterson's intent. It's a natural reaction but can benefit from attempting to approach situations in a better faith. The road isn't any more or less crossed from what intent was meant, but it's important to know the reasoning.

This was fantastic. I’ve always enjoyed Matthew McConaughey’s movies, but over the last 5 years give or take, his personal growth that he’s shared with the public has been inspiring and makes me enjoy him and his work even more. Jordan Peterson came in to view maybe two or even three years ago now and just blew me away. I too felt like what I thought and felt, he was able to put into words that made me shout, yes! That’s exactly it. I enjoy listening to both of these gentlemen separately and together. Thank you for this. Can’t believe this has been out a year and I’m just now coming across it.

Have read both matthews and Jordan’s books more than once and listened to this a couple of times in the past. Only today have a pieced together the “judging” and self sabotaging of my own life as I navigate life with a brain injury and strive to regain my true self and my ideals. A thousand thank you’s to you both for this epiphany and this green light 🙏🏼
So freaking refreshing watching Mr Peterson speak with someone who’s nice to him!!
LoL
I wish Dr Peterson the best of health. But I think it would be even more refreshing to see him tear someone of Cathy Newman's ilk a new one. Lol. I just watched tje channel 4 debacle again last night. And the 20 or so minute build up to the decimation that came a a result of the interviewer's misconceived preconceptions is worthy of a Pulitzer prize or Oscar (for Peterson I mean, Newman would get a Razzie at best) or whatever the hell prize category it fits in. It was just amazing to watch. And he did it with patience and humility.
@@Lark993 very valid point, I didn't think of it that way
@@Lark993 I'm sorry I don't follow him closely enough to know details about his health. I'm sorry to hear that and pray 🙏 him nothing but the best. I do get that the continuous assaults must have an impact on his mental state and deplete his energy.

Dr Peterson refused to kneel. I admire his courage and integrity as much as his intellect.
I met Matthew on a beach in Malibu when I was a 1st year dental student in California. Being a prairie girl from Saskatchewan, Canada, I was so excited and starstruck. In my case I just wanted to break the chain and be a better man.
Finally seeing this. Mccaughey does laugh in unexpected places sometimes but the Mephistopheles quote about deserved demise earned through basic existence amused me as well -taken on its own and not in the context of the moment in the play or story, anyway. Groucho was a pretty well-read guy, if Goethe was his source for: “I’d never belong to a club that would allow someone like me to become a member”. Which is kind of the same fatalistic circular argument but packed in a much lighter package.

It is wonderful to see Dr Peterson clear-eyed, alert and vibrant.
As an ex addict I'm really curious to hear the details of his struggle lately. It's a very personal thing so we may never know the "dirty details" of what happened but dealing with benzos is a very precarious situation. I was addicted to heroin and benzos and heroin was much harder to stop but benzos give some of the most dangerous withdrawals of any substance. The fact he went all the way to Russia (if I remember correctly) for treatment really concerns me and leaves HUGE questions.
Edit: I watched the interview of him describing treatment and to be honest he just sounds like a drug addict lol. I love him and his message but going to Russia to be given PROFOPOL for a week is pretty much cheating his way into sobriety. Even hearing him talk about I get the feeling that he's not completely over it yet. I didn't sleep for months, I was throwing up all the time and got extremely depressed and had every symptom he described on top of opiate withdrawal but it was a much needed learning experience in accountability. Everyone has there own journey but I think it's a mistake to be treated in that manner. It would have been soooooo much easier for me to get clean by having someone knock me out for a week and a half while I detoxed but then I wouldn't remember all the pain I went through to get clean. I hope he gets over this eventually but everything I see leads me to believe that he's still not in the clear yet.

I'm at a point in my life where I have been ashamed by my actions and the results that they produce are so toxic and they are eating away at my relationship with my wife. I wasn't capable of understanding how I knew that God has forgiven me of my son's and yet I let myself of the hook so easily.
That was until Jordan pointed out that there is this higher standard; an ideal; that we are called to be and I knew that from the start but I couldn't connect the dots where I finally realized that all my actions, especially the ones I choose to ignore that negatively impact my life, really do impact me down the road.

“Optimism is courage, if it’s not naive.”
Brilliant.
Optimism is bullshit, because it contradicts the laws of nature. The universe is always increasing in entropy, it is impossible for entropy to decrease in a closed system. The idea that something good is just around the corner is akin to religious belief, not based in scientific reality. Existence is merely a journey towards maximum entropy (thermodynamic equilibrium of the universe). Nothing in the universe will survive. Not stars, planets, or civilizations. Stars will eventually cease to form as Hydrogen gas clouds are depleted, black holes will eventually decay due to Hawking radiation, and even atoms themselves will break down as the universe gets closer and closer to maximum entropy, rendering all forms of intelligence impossible. The laws of thermodynamics dictate our fate. Oswald Spengler was right all along: optimism is cowardice. We are all doomed, and we've been able to prove it scientifically for decades. Optimism is a fantasy designed to give comfort to our primitive human minds to help us cope with the brutal reality of the universe in which we exist.

What the hell are we going to do in a world without a podcast between Jordan Peterson and Matthew McConaughey?
Well said!!
Happy to see an Interstellar reference in here

Perfectly said, cheers
What a great interview, what a humble man Matthew is. I worked in a frame shop in NYC for many years in my youth. Matthew came in as a customer and was completely non assuming and polite. I did not even know who he was at the time until after he left and my boss told me. I then proceeded to look him up and watch all of his movies. Nice guy and very talented.
This deliberate and intelligent conversation between two of my favorite men was such a fun find at 2am. Thank you for being real men and real gentlemen. Stay strong and continue aging beautifully.
Matthew. Keep doing what you love because from the view of someone who just knows you are a famous actor, it seems that following your heart's desire has led you to the right places.
Don't think about what work they may or may not love, apparently they love you so stay true.

Matthew seemed almost relieved to be speaking to somebody who actually understood what he was trying to get across in his book.
Not only that, Dr. Peterson was a major inspiration for the writing of the book! =)
or who actually read it
You didn't find it rambling and self indulgent (not on the Professor Peterson side) ? I applaud him for the courage to speak to Peterson though.
That’s bc this is the life Jordan has been writing about, many of us feel like this, but feel the world we now live in doesn’t share those bedrock foundational values, as we’re experiencing in today’s Political struggles of ideology.

I love his whistle :) and Matthew McConaughey is the real deal!
Two of my favorites! I am even a bigger fan after watching this . It's obvious that Matthew is driven to be the best version of himself, how fortunate we are to hear this. I also absolutely love Matthew's darker, more complex character roles. Thank you Dr. P for sharing this meaningful and valuable exchange.
I love the fact that he actually thanks Jordan Peterson for his teachings. It's so refreshing, because I'd love to thank him myself.
Very few women read Dr. Peterson. I have never met any, even in academia.
I find his views interesting, but I don't take his every word as gospel.

@Chris Jacobs I've heard McConaughey talk about Peterson on other programs. He's definitely a huge fan
@@angelaconner3131 While I agree, but if the chance was there, I'd happily meet Matthew McConaughey too. I'd almost never turn down a chance to meet someone famous. There are some celebrities I'd probably pass up or even ignore if they were in the same place and same room.
I kept journals until 2007 from the age of 8 to 17 as it was mandatory in our home. Our house burned and they all burned with it. After that I was really upset because not only did my journals burn but so did all of my drawings and poems I wrote and every single little thing that I would write down on/in all sorts of things. My momma even let me write on the walls so long as it was purposeful, if you will. So I quit writing, no more journals, songs, poems, drawings. I completely gave up on my life. I feel like my life was better when I kept a journal so recently 2019 because “Covid” I couldn’t go anywhere, I started writing again and even created a board game with my 3 children that implemented journaling (currently still in development) I feel more alive when I journal. As far as Matthew goes, I love this guy! I’ve always liked him because he “feels like home” I could listen to him talk for ever. I feel like we have a connection, like a brother or father, a great friend. You can’t help but want to just walk up and hug the guy lol before I die I want to have a one on one conversation with Matthew.
True Detective and Greenlights are the finest works of Matthew. He didn’t catch my attention till those things and they blew my mind.

Yes, we need to be reminded frequently.

I met McConaughey a number of years ago when I was working at The Inn at Perry Cabin. I was the Guest Relations Manager and had the opportunity to meet him and talk to him. It stands out in my mind that, even so many years ago, he was so gracious, considerate, polite….and kind. Humility was already a part of his DNA even with all the adulation surrounding him. Great interview!

Don't underestimate the part you play and countless others do to repel evil. If we were closer to evil than its opposite then we would not have such a scary concept of it.

Really? How does he funktion? He can not setup his computer and mic decently, the big movie star.
Most of the interview was bs. Sorry!
What is his reaction to the scandals in his business? He takes millions and shuts up. Brilliant.
Jesus, that part with "Your father wants you to be even better than him" hit really close to home. I never thought about it that way. I always resented my dad for not living up to the standards he put on me. I now know that he just wanted and still wants me to be even better than him.
Thanks Mr. Peterson.
That's a powerful idea and I never thought about it that way.
I’ve fortunately already learned that lesson - bc I’m McConaughey’s age - as I attempt to teach my children lessons of right & wrong & reality - who to be and how to be. I’m very flawed in many ways, but really effective in other ways.... as are MOST, IF NOT ALL, HUMANS. So I get to see it from the side of the flawed parent, and then reflect on the pretty tough flaws of my own parents. It’s one of the most critical lessons of life.
Ive resented my dad since birth. My dads 90. We dont speak. Never have. Im 44.
I don't have to try hard to be better than that POS
i have a 7 year old and ive told him that many times, but worded differently. i always say
all that matters to me is that you can be better than me, so you can have a better life than me.
just coasting along is a good way to die miserable. there are too many people trying to do that these days. life used to be a lot harder and people were happy just to make it to the end of the day. but life isnt like that, so people need to push forward and figure out some new things. learn to love what you do, do just do what makes you happy
I like his sharing of his purpose. He is not just living but analyzing his journeying and that is admiring. Teach us respect for time which is the most valuable asset in anybody’s life. We always want to live our life in purpose, he is gifted, experienced and sharing his journey how more humble he could be. I found it fascinating and so encouraging.
I am here after watching Steven Crowder's video which he had some valid points, what Matthew what I said during the press conference at the White House now I will say I will always respect and never doubt what comes out of Jordan Peterson's mouth or mind. I know that will never lead me wrong. And Matthew does amazing movies as an actor I've watched a lot of his videos of him personal interviews and he seems to be good all the way around but as I've seen lately some people need you're not pick a side but you honor the truth especially what America is and should stay but also as America learns to adapt like it always has because of how we've always embraced every culture but still making sure that they are assimilated to who we Are and what makes us great so that dream will always be everybody's dream that they have a chance to grasp. I like this interview pretty good still feel like need a little Steven crowder comedy and a little extra straight in your face truth from a person's like his perspective and theirs but where more Americans can rely on with some dependability is listening to Stephen Crowder also all three of these men are powerhouses that actually do talk from their heart more than they don't I'll take that as a win and listen God bless America and God bless all of you and God bless the people that love America too we are so just starting to truly be the America that will truly end up being stronger, better, and more solid to the great values to which we were built upon.
Thank God Dr. Peterson is back after all who prayed for him and his family to get though the hell and challenge of very poor health. Carry on good soldier.😄🙏🌤

Watching this in 2023. A refreshingly honest and open discussion, very impressed with how articulate Matthew is. I'd enjoyed his film performances but known little about him. I would love to hear both men's thoughts in 2023 on the subject of the A list Hollywood stars who have become fathers in their late 70s/early 80s. Here in the UK, most people seem to think it is fine as the infants will be well provided for financially. I'm not sure it is healthy, given that the said actors already had plenty of children and grandchildren. People are often quite critical of late motherhood, the over 40s and even over 50s, but it is seen as acceptable for a man to become a father again late in life. Dr Peterson here was still recovering from his terrible health crisis, but now in 2023 he is looking radiant and strong, it is a joy to see. "Beyond Order" is one of the best books I have ever read and is already helping me to be a better person, it seems better than any psych meds to be honest !
