  • I decided to take a short break from writing/recording my 8 string EP and have a mess about with the 7 string. I wrote 5 tracks for a death metal EP for which I want to find a vocalist and this was track 6. It didn't really fit the vibe of the EP but I really liked it so thought I'd share it here instead. I had a lot of fun writing this one and I hope you enjoy it. Back to recording the 8 string EP tomorrow. Feel free to leave a comment if you have any feedback/requests.

Thank you very much for the kind words. It means a lot when someone takes the time to listen to my music, even more so taking the time to leave a comment. Also, I love Feared and incidentally, Regular Show, it's great haha.

Hey man, this sounds amazing, good job dialing in this guitar as well as you did with the MS8. Did you ever find a vocalist? I'd love to work with you doing any complimental role but especially vocals, I definitely wonder if we have similar ideas for lyrical theme and writing

Thanks very much. I didn't manage to get anything going with vocals unfortunately but yeah, I'd love to collaborate on something with you for sure. I've always found trying to write lyrics to be a big hurdle so I'd be happy for you to take as much control there as you want and anything you wanted to contribute musically/arrangement wise would be cool too.

@@jjrrecording The fact you found writing lyrics to be a hurdle shows you hold such elements of storytelling and themes to a high standard, which I just what I look for in artists, and if it wasn't already for your songwriting and playing I would guess you hold those to high standard as well (but I already KNOW that 😉) I myself still struggle to meet my own standards but that is the point! Growing and breaking through! A little progress recently has been very exciting for me and I would love to share some ideas musically and lyrically with you! The question is how? Haha, do you have instagram or something similar, to start?

@@psyghtseer Yeah I know what that's like, most of the stuff I write just sits in a very long queue waiting to be 'fixed' as I struggle a lot with being overly self critical haha. I don't have instagram but if you want to send me a message at jjrrecording@gmail.com I'd really like to exchange ideas and see what we can come up with.

I love how the bass guitar is easily discernable in this demonstration. I still prefer death metal to djent. Drop-A is like a cavernous abyss where djent and death metal begin to part ways. Glad I found these.

Thanks very much. I always try to have the bass audible in my mixes, for me it's where the power comes from, the guitar is the character but just gets so muddy very quickly if you try to give it the low end duty haha. I much prefer death metal to djent as well and for that I do B standard on the 7 or usually D standard on a 6. Thanks again for the comment

@@jjrrecording D-standard is hard to pass up; especially if you like Chuck Schuldiner or Muhammed Suiçmez, or you care about the bass tone, or you experiment with inverted powerchords (the fifth on the bottom string).
I love a 7 string, but often wish mine had a floyd like my six. However, I have a constant war in my head whenever I use my Omen-7. I prefer the sound of B-standard (or even Bb-standard... Nevermore, bro), but I like Drop-A for the simple reason that barre chords actually make sense in Drop-A (they rarely sound useful in 7-string-B-standard). What can I say, I like acoustic-sounding interludes.
I'm not a bass player, I have one, but I know I would NOT like playing bass for Drop-A. B-standard is cool because the scale runs across the neck are still achievable with fluid motions and even a low-B still "thumps". Much lower, and you simply get that blobby sounding attack with the drone-y fundamental rumbling afterwards. I love Ron-Jarzombeck's Drop-A stuff, but c'mon, I'm not Alex Webster.
I suppose after all that, I still prefer B-standard on my Schecter Omen-7 for the simple reason that the strings I like are easily accessible at my local music store. I use an 8-string set ( D'addario EXL120-8 ), BUT I use the 65 for the Low-B and the 54 for the Low-E and the rest for "normal use" (tossing the 42). I have not a friggen clue why they constantly push such floppy strings for extended range instruments -- a 64 is really perfect for a low B on a 65" scale (using a 54 is laughable). I have special ordered .70 gauges before, but a 64 is a drive away and has a little more 'snap' and less dullness.

@@brianbergmusic5288 Yeah, I absolutely love both Necrophagist and Nevermore, Loomis is one of my absolute favourite players. I haven't had much exposure to Death but I like what I've heard of them. I used to use 10-56 for 7 string but definitely found them too unstable for hard picking, especially in drop A. I'm currently trying out Ernieball 10-62 cobalts. I like them a lot so far but they have a 42 for the A string which seems overkill to me haha. I generally find the bass is fine in drop A with new strings but I do prefer B standard, especially as the strings age. I've been thinking about trying to cover some Nevermore so I'll see how it does with Bb.

@@gusnwosu928 Cool man, I haven't tried the nameless suite myself. Archetype Petrucci is definitely my favourite at the moment. If you haven't done so already, I'd recommend getting the 2 week trial to check it out
