  • Here's Quick Riffs No. 62. Pretty simple stuff here again, a little bit of polymeter going on but just a nice heavy groove for the most part. There's a fair amount of octaves used in the riffs as I really enjoy the evil vibe that gives in the right context, more so than power chords, which tend to sound like shit in this register anyway haha. I hope you enjoy this week's Quick Riffs and as usual, thank you for watching.

Thank you very much, that's very kind. All credit should go to Archetype Gojira haha

@@jjrrecording I know you're using Gojira. I also use it, but I can't achieve the same level of sound/tone quality as yours. Maybe it's due to the strings, scale, thin settings in Gojira, pre-EQ and post-EQ, etc.🤷 :) Many people also use Gojira but their sound/tone is "dirty", in such cases, we say "No hearing, the bear stepped on the ear" (🐻🐾🐾👂) :)

@@le_rockshark I think the biggest difference probably comes from EQ and the mastering chain(that makes a big difference to my tone in the mix) If you haven't already I would recommend cutting a lot of low end and some low mids from the tone, that makes it sound very thin on it's own but clear and full when combined with bass in a full mix.
I honestly don't know what I'm doing haha, just been messing around trying different things and watching tutorials on youtube.

@@jjrrecording Thank you for your advice! As I already said, you have the best sound (tone) I have heard on UA-cam. I downloaded all your composition from UA-cam (“Quick Riffs”) and listen to it while driving or on a bike, it’s very cool! Please recommend (if you don’t mind) the video tutorials (about tone/sound) that you said you watch on UA-cam. By the way, I have been playing guitar for 30 years, but as a hobby (my main activity is software development), but I am very, very far from you :)

No problem dude. I haven't watched many tutorials specifically on tone but more on mixing as a whole(they generally cover a bit on tone though) I'd recommend anything by Nolly on the GetGood Drums youtube channel, Misha Mansoor has quite a few good ones on there too.ua-cam.com/play/PLH5FAzw8pgBfZI7gYx9o5wytzzxeY8auE.html Lots of good stuff in that playlist.ua-cam.com/video/Hg-ydepafYE/v-deo.html That's good one by Rabea Massad, worth checking out. I also like this tone tutorial from Josh Middleton ua-cam.com/video/LVlhlUxeXYA/v-deo.html
I would also just recommend watching tutorials from as many different people as you can, it's really helpful to see lot's of different ways of doing something to help build your knowledge of what's going on. I hope that helps.

This is so sick dude. By chance is this live audio without bass and mixing?

Thanks dude, I appreciate that. This is a live take but then I render the audio through a mastering chain before combining it with the video(no room audio though) Sometimes I just film tracking the guitar section by section and edit it together but this one was a live take

What's your favorite 8 string tuning? Are you a drop E guy, double drop d or something else? I like the idea of drop E, and the B string to drop A also. That will be my first experiment when I get an 8

I haven't done a lot of experimenting with tuning yet but most commonly so far I find myself playing in F (half step down from standard) or a whole step down from standard with the low string tuned to D. I like that double drop D idea you mentioned though, a few people have mentioned that and I fancy trying it out, I'm pretty sure that's how Mattias Eklundh tunes his 8 strings and he's one of my all time favourite players
