@@jjrrecording you're welcome! And I think you'll like their stuff, especially the 2000's era as I've mentioned, it just has this catchy groove about it :D
I was once with a mindset of tuning my guitar lowest possible thinking it was the key to heaviness. 15 years ago, had my Ibanez gio and would ask for bass player friends when they change their string to give me the ones I could fit into my guitar tuning nuts. But I learned that the bass guitar has it's place in the mix for a reason, and keeping my guitars in drop A and B, they give me what I need. I could go even lower then this since I have digitech drop pedal (a whole octave) but it losses on the heaviness. Guitar is to cut, grind, rip, scratch while the bass to fill in all the empty parts with heaviness in the lower spectrum. One of those bass tones I see as the pinnacle is on the static-x album regeneration (especially on accelerate song). This is my opinion but I tried both aspects and that is the conclusion.
I pretty much agree completely, a proper heavy 'guitar tone' in a mix is as much about the bass as it is the guitar and how well they blend. I do think tuning this low has it's place though, it's not really about trying to get heavier so much as about creating a darker atmosphere that you can't get with a higher tuning, but I prefer higher tunings because they tend to sound much more aggressive, it just depends on the situation and what feel you're going for

Hi again! One more question :) Is it comfortable to play the multi-scale guitar? (I mean the scary fan-frets, is it hard to point with fingers to right position on the fretboard?) I can't decide what to choose: the RG8 or RGMS8 🤷 :) Because I never played multi-scale, and my town is too small to go in the music store and try it myself (the only one music store has no 8 string guitar at all , and the 7 string guitar too :) ) Btw. if we dive into physics the multi-scale guitars are much closer to physics of sound (normal strings tension distribution etc. ) than guitars with standard fretboard. This fact is confusing me too - physics-friendly guitar but absolutely unknown and brand-new (of course for me :) ) VS standard guitar like RG8 but with potential issues with strings tension/gauge due to their standard fretboard 🤷 Btw never played both guitars ☝️ Sorry for my English :) Thanks again for the perfect performance 👍👍👍 love tone of double Drop D
Hi, no problem, you're english is very good. As for the fanned frets, I honestly don't even notice them when playing most of the time. At first it can be a bit weird visually, but it doesn't actually feel any different (to me at least) The only real difference it makes is the slightly bigger stretch between frets on the low strings due to the scale length.Overall I wouldn't worry about it being a factor to be honest, it feels basically the same to play, just looks a bit weird haha. Thank you for the kind words, I wish you luck in making your decision \m/

(I use Gojira like you) And only then (possibly) can I get a good djent :) but before that I need to play with the settings knobs for a long time :) Now the tone is similar to yours (but still far away :) ) By the way! My friends and I drank Ballantines (my favorite scotch) and high-quality сrimеаn cognac in the park and listened to Animals As Leaders, Messhugah and your compositions that I downloaded from UA-cam. Honestly the super low tunings only works when done right. It would probably work better with pretty clean guitar parts since it has the bass and all the high strings. Rob scallion is one I can think of who uses it well for pretty stuff and it works really well. Not saying this isn’t cool. The low notes just get muddy and messy and kinda get boring riding on the low string so much.
You're not wrong, it's definitely pretty muddy but I don't think it's as much to do with the tuning as it is with the fact I don't have the knowledge/skill for mixing haha. At this point I could probably get a clearer/better mix but I still don't have a clue what I'm doing haha. I actually quite like the drone/riding the low string vibe but I can definitely see your point and I think if I were to redo this song I'd add a bit more variation. I appreciate the feedback though so thank you \m/
Chunky chugs. Me like How are you liking the RGMS8? I'm considering upgrading to an 8-string myself but I have no idea what guitar to go for. My local guitar store never has any 8-strings in stock and thus I never get the chance to try one out. I have tiny hands and are wondering how much of a problem that is lol. I own a 7-string Schecter Hellraiser and I'm quite happy with it, but I think maybe the neck of an 8-string would be too thick for me. Also, I see your guitar has fanned frets, does that make playing any easier (or perhaps more difficult)? I'm sorry for all the questions. Great playing by the way, although that should go without saying!❤
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. I really like the RGMS8, it's a great playing guitar especially for it's price range. The neck is surprisingly thin for an 8 string but Ibanez generally have very thin necks. As for the fanned frets, the only time I ever really even notice them is playing a barre chord at the first fret where the angle is at it's steepest but I wouldn't say it makes it any harder to play. It does make for more of a stretch on the lowest strings though. I think the Hellraiser is 26.5 scale length which isn't much less than the RGMS8's low string scale at 27.2 and is actually longer than the high string scale which is 25.5. Looking at the stats there isn't much difference in neck thickness either. I think if you can play comfortably on a 7 you should be able to adjust to an 8. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
@@jjrrecording Thank you so much for your in-depth answer! I will definitely try and see if I can find the RGMS8 or any similar Ibanez for that matter. Thank you, I used a set of 10-80 here, definitely usable but depending on how hard you pick it might be worth going thicker as I had to adjust my picking a bit to compensate
Haha, thanks. I used Archetype Nolly for this, it was the 'Nolly's Murmur' preset with a lot of the low end removed from the first 3 bands of the multi band eq and I'm using the 'Down with the thickness' preset in GGD Cali Cabs. Almost all of the low end here is coming from the bass which is going through the 'afeared' preset in Parallax. The master chain makes quite a big difference too though. If you want more detail, I have screenshots I can send you, just send me a message at jjrrecording@gmail.com. I have to point out though, that I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to mixing, it's all just tweaking presets by trial and error haha
I used a set of 10-80 on this song, I would recommend going thicker than that for D1, maybe an 85, as I found the 80 to be overly loose and prone to rattle, definitely playable, but I'll be going thicker next time I tune this low. For avoiding muddiness though I would recommend EQ to remove a fair bit of low end from the tone, that's the main culprit for mud, leave the low end to the bass haha, it's the biggest thing that helped me start getting clearer mixes.
Just got a custom made 8 headless with a 28-26.5 scale length. Would you say the 80’s are good or would you go to 85 for D1? AMAZING tone/grooves none the less.
Thank you very much. I think the 80s are decent at D1 but not great, they're definitely a bit more prone to rattling than I'd like. I think an 85 would probably be better, although I haven't tried a set yet, I intend to go thicker on the next set I buy.
@@jjrrecording yea. I really like tonejoy’s 8 sets. I’ll definitely get a 85 and 90 to feel out the best. I managed to pull it off with 74’s but my action is much higher than I want it aha. I basically like getting the tone with the “lightest” strings I can get away with.
@@peterbatten596 Haha I imagine a 74 at D1 was just pure noodle. I'm going to try for 85 next time since I found the 80 usable, just not ideal and 90 is probably more than necessary. Good luck finding a happy balance though
I think it sounds pretty good. I play in DGDGCFAD on my 8 string so I'm familiar with this. I'm curious what you do for bass. Is it a real bass that you're using or a VST? I do a thing where I have my regular 4 string bass tuned to DGDG, the same octave as the guitars, but then duplicate it and drop the second track down an octave. The regular bass track is just a high passed distorted thing, while the low track is a very low passed clean track. The high track is meant to be heard while the low track is meant to be felt, since the notes are pretty much nonexistent at that frequency. I think it works really well and fills in the low end nicely. I wish I had a good example to share, but the album I'm working on hasn't dropped yet. I did also duplicate the guitars and put them through different amp sims, one for a more mid focused tone for body, and a more trebly tone for note clarity. And for strings, since I see you were using a regular 9-80 set and they were a bit floppy on the low strings, I use regular D'Addario 9-42 strings and then a 68 and 95 from String Joy. I'm not sure what the shipping to Scotland is like, but it's a solid option. 👍
Thanks, the bass in this is a 5 string tuned A D G C F, same octave as the guitar. That goes through Neural parallax for tone. I used to do a similar thing with the bass, split into two channels, one for high/distortion and one for low/clean tones, never tried lowering the octave on the clean track though. After I tried parallax though, I just found it much easier to get a tone I liked with that and thought it sounded better so that's what I'm using most of the time now. I've got the guitar up to drop E at the moment for some deathcore-ish stuff I'm writing but in the future I want to try some more super low stuff and I'll definitely look at a thicker gauge, 95 is a beast though haha. Thanks for the detailed comment, I appreciate it
@@jjrrecording That's fair. I run my Jazz bass through the Aurora Mammoth and it sounds disgusting. @@Just-Michael I've seen people using a synth bass or just a clean sub in the lower octave, it definitely lends a meaty low end which I like and it's something I might try in future. Thus far I've tended to prioritise ease/speed of workflow to keep it out of the way as much as possible since the actual writing is what I enjoy the most. Great Vid man! The tune is killer. I found your page looking for demos for this guitar as I've been thinking of getting one or something similar. How well does it stay in tune/intonation etc?
Thanks dude, I really appreciate that. This is the only 8 string I've played so I can't offer any comparisons but I will say I've found the intonation and tuning both to be pretty solid, especially for the price range. For tuning this low I'd say a slightly longer scale length would be better but it's definitely workable and I'm usually tuned to F anyway, it's one of my favourite guitars at the moment. I hope that helps and good luck on your search.
Loving the sound, what gauge is the set of strings? I’m thinking of getting this guitar, coming from a Harley Benton baritone 7. Is it still all factory specs or did you make any changes?
Thank you. This was a set of NYXL 10-80 but they were a bit floppy at this pitch so I would say an 80 would be the minimum I would use for tuning this low, that being said I think you'd need to widen the nut slot to get a thicker gauge to fit but I haven't attempted that yet. This guitar is still completely factory spec yeah, I didn't even give it a setup or anything, just new strings.
Hey, I’m getting this guitar in the mail today. Any suggestions on gauge strings? I hear the ones shipped with it aren’t really that great. I did order .10-.85 from Stringjoy hoping that will be sufficient.
Hi, I think a set of .10-.85 should be pretty good for D1. Obviously there's a lot of personal taste involved when it comes to string gauge but I had a set of .10-.80 on here and it was fine, but I did find that I had to pick softer than usual to accommodate the lower tension, but I do tend to pick really hard so I think an .85 would be great for this range.
I couldn't say for sure but my guess would be yes, they would handle it better. These being the stock pickups I think they're pretty good but definitely tend to be a bit muddy in the lows
Drop D on an 8 string? Can you explain to me because I'm confused. I would think it was Drop E on an 8 string because the lowest string would be an F#. I'm new to drop tunings
No problem. You're right that normally a drop tuning on an 8 string would give you a low E but in this case the whole guitar is also tuned down a further whole tone from there so the tuning is (low to high) D A D G C F A D
man! nice riffs and tunning. but how did you got the proper strings to it? i only found the regular 8 strings from ibanez for sale, do you use some bass strings or something? because if i drop it a whole tone then a D, strings get too loosen...tips? thanks
Thanks dude, I used a set of NYXL 10-80 gauge strings for this, and I'm pretty sure Ernie Ball have a set of 10-80 as well. I did find that even with an 80, the lowest string was fairly loose. I had to pick softer than I usually would which helped but even then it tends to rattle easily. You can get thicker strings too, I've seen individual strings up to 84 but they're usually out of stock here. I don't know if any of that helps, but good luck, keep trying \m/

Yeah, this is the guitar as delivered, didn't even do a setup or anything. Recorded DI and used Archetype Nolly with Cali Cabs, no other processing except the master chain on the whole mix. Most of the low-end is coming from the bass though, cheap Ibanez 5 string through Parallax.I think if you have a decent quality DI to work with you can make any guitar sound good with a bit of tweaking. The amp/ampsim and mixing are far more important than the actual guitar.
I go through a scarlett 2i2 into Logic and I use Neural plugins, the audio just goes straight to the speakers. I get major latency issues with any real processing so that's all turned off when recording and I use a stereo instance of kontakt instead of my multi-out kit for drums to save on processing too. I only turn everything on for rendering the full track. Using a standalone plugin is a good option too, rather than an instance in the DAW. Lastly, setting the buffer size as low as you can get away with helps cut down on latency. I hope some of that helps \m/
I had latency problems until I realized my headphones should be plugged into the audio interface and not the computer’s jack. On both that crappy computer and my new one the latency was zero when plugged into the interface. My recording deal is janky so it’s probably not as difficult on the computer as a smart person’s setup. I honestly have no clue what I’m doing but I enjoy doing it so don’t take anything I just said as serious advice.
@@13_cmi I haven't tried with headphones while playing actually but I don't have too much issue with roundtrip latency in general, but my computer just can't handle the amount of processing I have in a full mix context so the easiest solution is just to record without it haha

Thank you. I had been trying a set of nyxl strings for a couple weeks before I recorded this, I think they were 9-80, I liked them but they are pricey. For the tone, I think you could get something close with that sort of set-up, would take a bit of fine tuning though I think. @@jjrrecording Nice to know that. I'm using DV -77 cab which has tons of low mids, I cut at 250 and 500hz a lot with multi band eq and it sounds killer with amp 3. Just amp 2 I'm having troubles.
I do think tuning this low has it's place though, it's not really about trying to get heavier so much as about creating a darker atmosphere that you can't get with a higher tuning, but I prefer higher tunings because they tend to sound much more aggressive, it just depends on the situation and what feel you're going for
@@jjrrecording agreed

Hi again! One more question :)
Is it comfortable to play the multi-scale guitar? (I mean the scary fan-frets, is it hard to point with fingers to right position on the fretboard?)
I can't decide what to choose: the RG8 or RGMS8 🤷 :)
Because I never played multi-scale, and my town is too small to go in the music store and try it myself (the only one music store has no 8 string guitar at all , and the 7 string guitar too :) )
Btw. if we dive into physics the multi-scale guitars are much closer to physics of sound (normal strings tension distribution etc. ) than guitars with standard fretboard. This fact is confusing me too - physics-friendly guitar but absolutely unknown and brand-new (of course for me :) ) VS standard guitar like RG8 but with potential issues with strings tension/gauge due to their standard fretboard 🤷 Btw never played both guitars ☝️
Sorry for my English :)
Thanks again for the perfect performance 👍👍👍 love tone of double Drop D
Hi, no problem, you're english is very good. As for the fanned frets, I honestly don't even notice them when playing most of the time. At first it can be a bit weird visually, but it doesn't actually feel any different (to me at least) The only real difference it makes is the slightly bigger stretch between frets on the low strings due to the scale length.Overall I wouldn't worry about it being a factor to be honest, it feels basically the same to play, just looks a bit weird haha.
Thank you for the kind words, I wish you luck in making your decision \m/
@@jjrrecordingHi bro! Thanks for your advice and recommendations!
I finally bought a RG8 (white) ! A good guitar, I love the Ibanez. I tuned the tone for a couple of days to make it look like your tone. I learned that I can't just add gain and get a good sound :) like on a 6 and 7 string guitar :) I need to add a little overdrive before the main amp! (I use Gojira like you)
And only then (possibly) can I get a good djent :) but before that I need to play with the settings knobs for a long time :) Now the tone is similar to yours (but still far away :) )
By the way! My friends and I drank Ballantines (my favorite scotch) and high-quality сrimеаn cognac in the park and listened to Animals As Leaders, Messhugah and your compositions that I downloaded from UA-cam. We listened to it through the middle+ JBL speaker. So, my friends asked me to play YOUR music! (my musical preferences coincided with their preferences: in the end we listened to your compositions + a little Messhugah)
Cool !!!🤘🤘🤘
@@le_rockshark You're welcome dude, I'm happy to help when I can. I'm glad to hear you got your guitar, I hope you enjoy it.
As far as the tone goes, I would say that less low end will give you more clarity and a tighter sound overall.
It's nice to hear you chose to listen to my music along side the greats haha, very flattering. I really appreciate the support, so thank you \m/
@@jjrrecording By the way, thanks for the advice! I tried to suppress (cut) the LOW frequencies BEFORE Gojira and the tone became more readable! Thank you!
Also inside Gojira, I previously used a light Overdrive (OD) as a preamp before the main amplifier, now I turned it off and instead use the same little Distortion DRT) and the sound became even clearer and more readable, sharper when djent! (the guitar seems to "growl" 🦁!!!)
_(but less meaty / beefy, because it is the OD preamp that gives us the beef. But I fixed this when I slightly increased the Gain in the main amplifier)_ .
This game is interesting - searching for the ideal tone :)))
I am still playing and looking for the ideal gain/tone balance in the preamp and main amplifier. It's fun :)
Still far from ideal tone but i'm an optimist :)
My complete chain: RG8 (F std. tuning) -> 2i2 -> PC/Reaper -> VST pre-EQ (low cut ! ) -> VST Gojira (distortion -> main amp -> post-EQ) -> 2i2 -> BD 770pro
Thanks!🤘🤘🤘
@@le_rockshark No problem dude, I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the process, it's definitely a lot of fun \m/
Me like
How are you liking the RGMS8?
If it means I'm gonna have to go for a road trip then so be it. I own an Ibanez grgr131ex and that thing is an absolute beast despite only costing £200 retail price, so I guess Ibanez is the way to go. Again, thank you so much :)

This sounds awesome, btw

I have same guitar... what is the gauge of strings to escape muddiness at low end in this tuning level?
I used a set of 10-80 on this song, I would recommend going thicker than that for D1, maybe an 85, as I found the 80 to be overly loose and prone to rattle, definitely playable, but I'll be going thicker next time I tune this low. For avoiding muddiness though I would recommend EQ to remove a fair bit of low end from the tone, that's the main culprit for mud, leave the low end to the bass haha, it's the biggest thing that helped me start getting clearer mixes.
String gauge dude?
This was a set of 10-80, the 80 is a bit too loose at D1 for my taste though

@@peterbatten596 Yeah please do, I'd be interested to hear how you find them
I think it sounds pretty good.
XD
I imagine people just run the bass at the same octave, but for whatever reason, the lower octave added in there just worked for me. Definitely worth a try but I understand if you're not into it. I feel like it's even harder to get it to sit right that way than it would be otherwise but I like the sound. :P
And yes, the 95 is a lot, had to make the nut slot HUGE for it. :P
@@Just-Michael I've seen people using a synth bass or just a clean sub in the lower octave, it definitely lends a meaty low end which I like and it's something I might try in future. I just haven't spent much time learning the mix/production side of things as yet. Thus far I've tended to prioritise ease/speed of workflow to keep it out of the way as much as possible since the actual writing is what I enjoy the most. I should really spend more time learning to mix though haha
@@jjrrecording That makes sense. Lucky for you though, your mixes are good. I put in a bunch of work and it doesn't sound any better than this. 😂
@@Just-Michael Thanks, for me it's just been a case of improving a little bit at a time for a long time, picking up little bits here and there. It's only really in the last year or so I've managed to reach a point where I could convince myself it might be worth sharing some stuff. I have hours and hours worth of what I think are good ideas/riffs recorded, they just have really poor mixes haha, seems like such a chore to go back and remix stuff. I'm trying to be better about that though
If I can't hear the string wobbling instead of vibrating then it isn't low enough. If I can tell what note it is it's not low enough

String gauge?
10-80 for this one
Loving the sound, what gauge is the set of strings? I’m thinking of getting this guitar, coming from a Harley Benton baritone 7. Is it still all factory specs or did you make any changes?
Thank you. This was a set of NYXL 10-80 but they were a bit floppy at this pitch so I would say an 80 would be the minimum I would use for tuning this low, that being said I think you'd need to widen the nut slot to get a thicker gauge to fit but I haven't attempted that yet. This guitar is still completely factory spec yeah, I didn't even give it a setup or anything, just new strings.
Thanks!

Obviously there's a lot of personal taste involved when it comes to string gauge but I had a set of .10-.80 on here and it was fine, but I did find that I had to pick softer than usual to accommodate the lower tension, but I do tend to pick really hard so I think an .85 would be great for this range.
for a little more money you can get the rg80f with fishmans, would you think fishmans could handle low tuning better?
I couldn't say for sure but my guess would be yes, they would handle it better. These being the stock pickups I think they're pretty good but definitely tend to be a bit muddy in the lows
Drop D on an 8 string? Can you explain to me because I'm confused. I would think it was Drop E on an 8 string because the lowest string would be an F#. I'm new to drop tunings
No problem. You're right that normally a drop tuning on an 8 string would give you a low E but in this case the whole guitar is also tuned down a further whole tone from there so the tuning is (low to high) D A D G C F A D
ten56 pitch shift to double drop D and its disgustingly heavy
That's a good idea actually, I've been using Neural's transpose function quite a bit recently, haven't gone that low with it yet though
man! nice riffs and tunning. but how did you got the proper strings to it? i only found the regular 8 strings from ibanez for sale, do you use some bass strings or something? because if i drop it a whole tone then a D, strings get too loosen...tips?

I was trying out an nyxl 9-80 set on this, even at 80 the low string was pretty loose, not as bad as I expected though, still perfectly playable
Not to low at all,my go to tuning on my 8 string is daeadgbe
Cool, I haven't tried that one before, sounds interesting though
How do you monitor your audio out when recording? (how do you deal with latency?) thanks!
@@jjrrecording Thank you for the thoughtful and detailed explanation, sir! 🤘🤘
@@MaximumPasta No problem dude \m/
8 string guitar in drop d. Bro, get a bass 😂😂😂 but really that 8 sounds sick af
Hahaha, thanks dude
Cool. Whats the gauge of the lowest string and what plugin dou you use
Thank you, I used an .80 for the low string here and Archetype Nolly for the tone
@@jjrrecording thx for the answer could share ur preset(s) for nolly
@@efeefendioglu2584 No problem. I used the Nolly's Murmur preset then removed some of the lowest 3 bands on the EQ and I actually used Cali Cabs instead of the Nolly Cab section. If you want more detail you can email me at jjrrecording@gmail.com and I can send you some screenshots from the project
@@jjrrecording thank you very much bro I'll try it out and if needed ill sent the mail
@@efeefendioglu2584 No problem dude, good luck
what drums do you use?)
This was the OKW Metal kit from GGD, I think it was just the stereo version with a bit of extra parallel compression, nothing fancy
What gauge strings do you have? Also you tone is great ! Would you be able to get the same tone with just an amp and a distortion pedal and Maybe a noise gate?
Thank you. I had been trying a set of nyxl strings for a couple weeks before I recorded this, I think they were 9-80, I liked them but they are pricey. For the tone, I think you could get something close with that sort of set-up, would take a bit of fine tuning though I think. I would say though, the master chain on the track changes the tone quite a lot, not sure how close I could get with a real amp setup but probably something equivalent though, and yeah, noise gate is your friend when playing 8 string haha.
@@jjrrecording I may try using a modeling software then, something like tonebridge, which one do you use? Im still fairly new to playing through a computer.
@@austinjoiner5968 I have a few different amp sims but I used Neural DSP Archetype Nolly for this song. They have a lot of really great products, that's the one I use most often though. I'll do my best to answer any other questions you have, though I'm no expert myself haha.
I love this tone, you are killing it. Do you use Overdrive 1 or 2 of Archetype Nolly? Would you cut bass freq before the amp? I'm fine with amp 3 of Archetype Nolly for this distorted sound, but having a hard time getting crunchy tight sound on amp2. The lows seemed to flying everywhere if I don't make a eq cut before amp.
Thanks very much. I'm using OD 1 on this with drive at about 9 o'clock and tone about 2 o'clock with the level at full into amp 3. I didn't do any pre-eq, just removed a significant amount of low end with the multi band eq, across the first 4 bands. Also using the cali cabs changed the tone quite noticeably too.
@@jjrrecording Nice to know that. I'm using DV -77 cab which has tons of low mids, I cut at 250 and 500hz a lot with multi band eq and it sounds killer with amp 3. Just amp 2 I'm having troubles. Afyer some tinkering I found OD2 has a much wider range than OD1, the knobs are very sensitive. I'm set with OD2, volume at about 2 o clock and very little gain. Also bass at 0. At first I thought it's the same as OD1 I used full volume, but I found that gives me much much more gain than OD1
@@progun1corn Cool, I haven't experimented with amp 2 very much, I need to spend a bit more time exploring the possibilities for sure. I definitely find for a tight sounding tone that using the lowest amount of gain you can get away with helps a lot as well as cutting the low/low mids. It sounds very thin on it's own but helps it sit in the mix so much better and the bass is where you want all your beef anyway haha
What string gauge do you use to obtain this awesome tuning?
This is a set of 10-80, I wouldn't go any lighter than that for this tuning
@@jjrrecording thats bad ass. I too play through a 10-80 set and I was playing in drop D# just for the hell of it last night and it sounded great. I switched to string joy I have had no complaints my man👌👌
@@spongebob6664 Cool, I haven't tried Stringjoy, I usually use Ernieball or NYXL. It's definitely a lot of fun to experiment with tunings \m/
I bumped up the gauge from a 80 to a 85 on a 27 inch scale, I highly recommend it
