    It really amazes me when the drivers don't know their height, or when their box is in the air, how can you not know these two things!?. There were definitely some fatalities here, it unfortunate. But not paying attention, overloading, not knowing your height, speed, are just a few factors at hand here. People really need to wake up. I'm a retired truck driver, & I've seen some pretty stupid & dangerous things out there on the road. I was fortunate enough not to have had any kind of accident during my career, to which I am very thankful for.

He had plenty of time to change lanes...

    • @Procrastinator1948
      @Procrastinator1948 2 роки тому +1

      @@nenabunena It absolutely is the drivers responsibility to know the height of his vehicle, and in the case of flatbeds, to know how tall the crap on you trailer is. And the dimensions of the load dictate whether or not you need to be routed a specific way to avoud obstacles. Also, if your load is that large or heavy, the states issuing the load permits will indicate if you need a specific route and escort vehicles. What I really don't understand, however, is just how completely stupid a dumptruck driver has to be to drive off with his damned bed still raised.

      @@neilanderson841 Neil that's rough on many, as I think you'd agree, unless you're one that has it in your blood. I'm sure you are more aware of accidents with trucks than me, On straight shots where it's open road may not be too bad. But still demanding.
      Not being on the road all the time, I've seen them crash into bridges, run off a bridge, had one many moons ago pull out and try to pass a long line of vehicles that were closed in tight. My dad seen a bit more than me, like having to pull a trucker out who was soused. Where being tired didn't help him any. I was passing one in NC, he must have been asleep where I don't mess around passing, it's a dangerous place. Suddenly he snatched that rig over in my lane for a maybe 10" log in the road, where he should have seen before having to make such an erratic snatch.
      Any input? It crosses my mind how in the 70's speed limit was 55, but trucks would be up there 70-75 mph, but still known then as some of the safest and most courteous drivers on the road. But so much was open highay relative to now.

      @@Noone-rt6pw Aye, I have been a trucker for 44 YEARS. The driving laws are there to protect DRIVERS, companies will push or turn a blind eye to drivers who work illegally, it's in their interests to maximise profits whilst reducing costs. I give you a example a good friend of mine would always do one delivery a day, whilst on break, he paid £1000 fine, for fifteen minutes, when caught. His boss told him 'we did not ask you to break the law'!!!. Transport industry is one of excess work and underpaid drivers, easy to see why there are many thousands of vacancies. Companies always want more for less as a result drivers bend the law. Personally speaking I always worked legally, speed & tacho, by doing so the companies I worked for could do nothing to me. Aye the driving laws are in need of a overhaul, no-one should be expected to work 15 hours a day up to 3 times a week. But drivers like to work less hours as a result, work illegally especially speeding. I have been overtaken by artics, who should know better, when travelling at 50mph on a single track road or tailgated with flashing lights to pressure me to speed up, has yet to work.

    You would think with all the modern technology, the driver could simply enter their vehicle height and the navigation app could find a route with acceptable clearances for overpasses.

    • @andeekaydot
      @andeekaydot 2 роки тому +2

      I know for Europe, you can purchase special Navigation Systems for trucks. You find narrow roads, maximum weight limits for bridge crossing, narrow curves, and, of course, height limits.
      But those are expensive. So, many heavy transport drivers use passenger car systems, resulting in bringing themselves or others in trouble now and then.
      You can do that, of course. But you have to stick to traffic signs telling you to avoid certain restrictions. You have to be aware of that.
      And the main issue here seems those hitting the bridge are neither aware of what vehicle they move, nor of the fact, that warning signs and flashers are there for a purpose.
      Those people belong behind no steering wheel, imho.

      @@andeekaydotfirst: I'm a driver in the US, & you can buy a GPS like you mentioned for trucks. They are expensive, around $600 USD.
      Second: NEVER trust a GPS fully. You have no idea how many times the GPS will put you on a wrong road, & even on a road not recommended for trucks!
      Third: I've seen car GPS fail for cars as well.
      Fourth: remember, the GPS is only as good as the people who enter the information in a computer & those that do the mapping.
      Remember, a satellite only gives a vehicles position. The mapping & routing coordinates is all entered into a computer database & then the satellite transmits what the computer has in it's database back to the vehicle.
      Fifth: overhead clearances are not always accurate, in the US at least! Road maintenance crews are often far behind at keeping actual clearances correctly displayed.

    • @timothygeiger8271
      @timothygeiger8271 2 роки тому +1

      You would think that some people would be smart enough to know they already have that. You would also think that people that comment on here would be smart enough to know the app only has what information has been entered into it's database! That information is NOT always correct. You would also think people who comment on something they know nothing about would know that not all clearances posted are NOT accurate, state & federal road crews are often far behind posting actual correct clearances! Navigation apps & devices rely on what they have entered in their computer database, those databases are not always updated, & are only as reliable as the people who enter the information.
      Ive been a truck driver for over 30 years, you don't have any clue how many times a GPS fails! NEVER fully trust a GPS or navigation app. They CAN & WILL lead you down the wrong road!!

    That scene at 1:02 that many others have commented on. I rewinded that one a few times. I’m a truck driver myself. I wonder what it would have felt like in the cab to have that happen to you. The suddenness of that violence the driver experienced from out of nowhere.
    Everyone on here saying he died instantly. But the load didn’t go through the cab. And if he had a seatbelt he survived. But he would have practically died from the shock. I mean, usually you “see it coming” with a lot of these other accidents. But imagine randomly stopping at a stop light and suddenly in less that a second you hear a severely loud boom and you flip completely horizontal.
    Shit.
