WAIT... Remember Shaman King?

- Shaman King is a series that has earned a pretty high status in the realm of Manga, but not so much in anime thanks to the first verison of the Shaman King anime going in its own direction at one point. Regardless, Shaman King's original anime serves as a major reason that helped get myself and so many others in the series in general as it would be put on the FoxBox in the United States thanks to 4Kids. Let's take a look back at what Shaman King was all about and where things may have gone wrong.

Thanks so much for watching! Did you ever get into Shaman King? What’s your favorite piece of Shaman King media? Let me know!
Honestly all of the animes and mangas I even cosplayed as Yoh this year a few times for some events it was 🔥 huge SK fan.
You're awesome dude!
@@Scorpiofrfr thx I became the black shaman king at the cons I went to i wore his white button down shirt, with the green pants, black belt, had his necklace and orange headphones all I was missing was the Oracle bell and the sword but I wasn't tryna carry my foam sword through TSA. It was awesome
@@Scorpiofrfrthe legend is here
I think the GBA games are underrated 😅
Yoh still to this day is my most fav shounen protagonist of all time. Rarely angry, often mellow, jovial, just goes with the flow, can befriend nearly anybody, the embodiment of chill.
You're describing literally every anime protagonist.
@@wicks_lindowsnope, not Naruto, not deku, not luffy, not natsu, not Yugi, not Denji, not Tanjiro, not Medaka, etc. He's actually fairly different in the shonen landscape.
@@toongamer2810You've just described Goku though! :)

And had one of the best openings on TV. Also was my first anime where I discovered "anime only" ending
SHAMAN KING WAS THE OG 4KIDS 🐐
I started to watch the reboot (Sub and Dub). It felt good hearing nearly over 85% of the original 4Kids voice actors return for it. Also, the 4Kids intro still slaps to this day.
The intro was truly the best.
I thought they were new actors
It's my destiny to be
Yep. Hearing Lisa Ortiz, Dan Green, Eric Stuart and many others sold the Dub For me.
Errrr... someone actually spoke well of 4kids? now that's a first, as an european that has been on youtube since 2007, never i had the pleasure of reading 4kids and "still slaps" or "it felt good".They must have done a decent job, either that or you don't know the concept of something being objectively good. Anyway thanks for this comment!
Aw man. I had Jetix. My animation journeys started thanks to Jetix. Shaman King and then Naruto for anime, and oh so many western animation that I still occasionally re-watch to this day (Galactik Football, Oban Star Racers, Totally Spies/Martin Mystery/Team Galaxy, WITCH, ATOM...)
Shaman King was THE DISCOVERY for me. I would rush home after school to watch the new episode.
Same man.. Jetix put us on to some great shows. I loved Digimon Frontier & Shinzo
Kindred spirit! We shared a childhood! Jetix was the absolute shit! No Naruto in my region, tho. But I'm familiar with and loved all of those shows you named. The level to which Jetix's roster was stacked was just sinful.
Oh boy Shaman King has like 10 spin off manga, that collaboration with Stan Lee really sold Takei into trying to make a Shaman King expanded universe
Collaboration with Stan Lee?!?

Missed out on watching the Original Series, but I love how most of the original cast went on to Dub the Reboot. So it was nostalgic hearing many of these old voices. The series was surprisingly dark compared to other shounen.
Man, reliving the Fox Box days has been a treat. Thanks for doing these!
I remember watching the original series in the very early 2000s and always feeling like there was more to it. Then i read the manga through middle and high school…and cried a lot to it, Matamune’s side story always gets to me.
Then i thoroughly enjoyed the reboot and finally getting to see what Shaman King was meant to be. It got ms through a very traumatizing divorce and sickness, so it really could not have come at a better time.
Planning to rewatch it once winter hits and im snowed in haha
Truly wish Shaman King had gotten more love and appreciation here in the US
I remember a friend back in high school lover Shaman King and would tell me how amazing it was so..I did what any kid would do in the late 2000s and go to the library and read it that way. It was the first manga series I properly read and to this day inever "finished" it. As in I read the initial 32 volumes but even back then j could tell this was an incomplete series. That being said and as my profile pic can tell...the series has semi personal meaning to me. To this day Yoh is still one of my favorite Jump protagonists and characters period. I do plan to and wanna finish the manga. I did start watching the 2020 run and I really enjoy it. I like and appreciate ruey got some of the original cast from the 4kids dub back for role reprisal like Lisa Ortiz and Dan Green. They even got the voice or Manta back, which I personally find cool. It's nice seeing lore coverage on this franchise. It deserves it. 😊
Shaman king was one of my favorite animes during the 4kids days and also has such an amazing opening that i still randomly sing to this day!
Anna and Yoh were such an unusual pair for a shonen. Generally crap doesn't happen til the very end but they are a thing from super early on. Also the scenes that sticks in my head the most is Faust doing anything. Dude was weird af
Faust carrying, reviving everyone
Lol ik buti love evey character
Shout out to that one scene in the manga where Faust sips liquid morphine from a bottle
Love how your just going through 4kids/ the foxbox I'm here for it!!! ❤
God i always held this series so close to my heart, loved the fox box for showing me it. And shonen jump as i read it. Hell i even collected the original volume and been trying to get physical translated version of the spin offs. I love the style takei uses later down the series
Can't wait for the WAIT... Remember Justice League/JLU and Batman Beyond
I love the 4kids dub tbh. They made great jokes that weren’t cringey and the voices fit so perfectly. A lot of people rip on Tao Ren for having an English accent, but I thought it was necessary because he is of a different nationality. And plus, he was raised prim and proper. So it never bothered me. Plus, Sean Schemmel’s Ryo was amazing. He played it so well.
This was my very first anime! I purposely tried to always adjust my morning as a kid to make sure I never missed an episode of it! Around college, I got to watch all the original dubbed and read the manga, then was so thrilled to watch the latest addition! Truly was a fantastic anime!
Ryu pompadour got its own character arc.
Yup, I remember watching this on CH during Toonami.
Early 2000s anime were peak.
I first herd of Shaman King by word of mouth and then found the first 6 manga in a used book store and scooped it up fast. Been slowly collecting the manga since.
Next to Pokémon, I'd say Shaman King was/is my biggest hyper-fixation from my childhood. I remember finding a couple of the manga volumes from my local library as well as watching the show on FoxBox and instantly being hooked. I just really like the art-style, story, and overall vibe that the series had and I was glad when they announced a reboot involving most of the original cast.
This was part of my childhood and it was awesome.
I remember buying the monthly Shonen jump from my schools book fair and that was my first time seeing it. It was brutal. Fist chapter I read was that graveyard fight with the zombie guy.
My experience with Shaman King was watching a few of the 4Kids episodes when it was airing, then finding the first couple manga in my local library about a decade later and then finally being able to experience a full story with the Netflix anime. While every version I've experienced has its own charm, nothing fills me with joy like listening to the opening song for the 4Kids version.
I grew up on early 2000's Saturday Cartoons and Anime and somehow the series went over my head, I went and checked out the series a few years ago and it's became my #1 fav anime (coming from a guy with 10,800+ eps watched according to MAL). What made me fall in love with the anime was all the rich cultures in it and the characters stories, values, dreams, bonds, struggles and challenges. Also the voice acting was a dream come true, it blended so many memorable voice actors from that era of my childhood, va for Amy Rose as Anna, Sean Schemmel va of Goku as Amidamaru/Ryo, Dan Green va of Yami Yugi/Mewtwo as Silva, va of Brock/Seto Kaiba as Marco, va of Ash Ketchum as Jeanne, va of Pokemon's May as Tamao and va of Misty as Trey's sister Pirica. It was all just a nostalgic trip down memory lane which made all these interactions between these characters really fun and amazing. This series truly is underrated and I wish it got more awareness and love that it deserves
This was my 3rd favorite Shonen after the big 3. You Asukura is an original MC very chilled and relax nature . And I love the reboot. It’s not often the antagonist wins and becomes the hero of his own story.
Man the version that was shown on 4Kids TV was both a staple of my Saturday mornings in the 2000's & how I even heard of the series as a whole. And while I recently finished the reboot this year, this version has a special place in my heart.
Manta's oversoul in chapter 51 was epic. I love when anime use their freedom to show epic scenes that break the rules of the series. Yoh was in a stressful moment but seeing his friend do the oversoul drew a smile on his face. That scene is burned in my brain.
I love this anime with all of my heart. First anime that had so good dub in Polish. I even had some episodes on VHS. I used to watch it with my sister and my dad. Later on I read manga and watched anime with subs. One of my all time favorites for sure! And has special place in my heart as Anna is character I share name with ❤
This was a classic I remember reading the manga as a kid I was always finding new random anime/manga as a kid. Love these videos going over older anime lately man
Lol, Fringe's head cutt off, is hilarious.
Oh man, Shaman King was one of my influences growing up, I absorbed everything about the show and discovered the manga as well and the games, it was great timeless.
Shaman King to this day is my favorite manga, and the first I collected every volume for. The new anime was soemthing I had wanted for decades. Thank you for this wonderful trip down memory lane, excellent video as always!
I had no idea there was a newer series, loved the original, great video!
I've watched some episodes of this anime on LatAm Spanish (the work made by the voice actors there is amazing, and it's always cool to hear voices you're familiar with on other media, for example, You is voiced by Gabriel Gama, who has also voiced Brock in the Pokémon anime, and Miroku in Inuyasha), I haven't been really that consistent with the following, but I've enjoyed what I've seen overall
I never watched this show as a kid, but after reading it twice and watching the new anime, it’s one of my favorites! Also saw the top-screen ad for Black-Hole High, and that was a sudden trip too!
If it wasn’t for this version of Shaman King, the Reboot wouldn’t exist and of course, having the 4Kids cast coming back for the Reboot is such a nice surprise
I think it's more about the fact that Kang Zeng Bang was made that the reboot exists.
SONICX1027 the reboot is the fixed version since it follows the manga this time.
I never really grew up on the anime because I’d already gotten into Shonen Jump issues by that point. Wanting to know about the uncensored version of Naruto & collecting Shonen Jump exclusive YGO cards allowed me to discover the Shaman King manga. I unfortunately started around the fight against Ren’s family, but the story had me hooked. Shaman King was the 1st manga/comic series I ever collected, & it’s still 1 of my favorite stories.
Yoh is also 1 of my idols. He was the antithesis to the archetypal shonen protagonist. Laidback, not super competitive, but will eff up anyone who antagonizes his friends. He also kept making friends with his enemies. That was new to me watching someone look for the good in everyone. He even drops out of the tournament for the chance at resurrecting Ren. I was used to protagonists prioritizing competitions to above everything, & their entourage discouraging any alternatives. But Yoh didn’t hesitate to give it for his friends, even if it allowed the main antagonist to become the shaman king. So many refreshing subversions I can’t even cover in 1 little comment. I will always love this story, even if the new anime didn’t meet expectations.
Shaman King was the 2nd anime I ever watched, and I was definitely hooked in an instant, probably the one 4kids content that I actually approve of, mainly due to the dubbing (Pitchforks down pls) let me explain, I never watched the english dub of the 4kids shaman king, I watched the Latin American dub, and if there is one thing that Latin America does beyond perfection is dubbing.
The humour in the Spanish version of the show was just on point and the voices gave the characters so much .... character.
I loved this version of shaman king so much that I hunted down the old-as-ghosts VHS recordings of the show from back when it was broadcasted in Fox Kids then Jetix a couple of years ago, burned them to DVD's as well, just in case.
For the longest time I had no idea why shaman king was just in the back of my mind with a near mythic perfection, rose-tinted glasses? a kids perspective? But after getting those old VHS's i learned why, I actually never saw the last 3 episodes on TV, for me they were lost media (in spanish), heck the last episode recording I found wasn't even fully in spanish. it was chopped in spanish, then a chunk in japanese.
Still, the original 4kids version is a guilty pleasure for me.
Ive never clicked on a video so fast!! I first found out about it through Shounen Jump back in middle school and was hooked on it for many many many years to come! Happy to see this video!
You just keep going with the anime I grew up with kirby, sonic, shaman king, ultimate muscle. Loving this streak
I love how varied the cast is. Yoh, Ryu, Trey/Horohoro and Morty/Manta are all Japanese, but are all so different.
And I love how the show has the incredibly underrepresented Ainu people!
I was so used to cartoons having "the one asian character", but here 5 out of the 7 main protagonists are a different asian region.
I'll never forget catching every episode of Shaman King on Jetix every night. Banger series even with the 4kids dub, best intro out there.
At this rate we'll get a video about Mew Mew Power and I cannot wait
To this day that shaman king intro is still one of my favorites
One of my friends from middle school and I got into correcting collecting mangas when he was given some of the books from Fullmetal Alchemist. He worked in collecting that series while I worked on collecting Trigun. His mum tried to support his enjoyment of manga, not realising he was after a single, specific story, by getting him some One Piece, so I chose for my second manga... Shaman King. This was how I eat introduced to the world of Shaman King. I had never heard of it before, it wasn't recommended to me, it was just a decision made one day after spending a few hours sitting at a Border's Books, perusing different mangas to find one I thought I'd enjoy collecting. And I did enjoy it! I never finished it, or watched the anime, but I really enjoyed the world that was built for this story.
I unironically enjoy this series much more than the new one
I didn't know there's a new one
@@RollingDutchmannit’s a massive disappointment sadly
I watched two episodes of the new one and then switch to watching the old one on my first watch.
@@-perry what's the difference?
@@RollingDutchmann It goes all the way to the end of the manga, but it's way more rushed than the original, several of the fight scenes are just still frames, and near the end whole fights are reduced to a single still frame. I only recommend watching if you're curious to see how the story ends but doesn't have the patience to read the manga, but don't go in expecting anything amazing out of it... except the music, that is still great.
The intro for this is so good. This show got me into anime. I had of course watched anime on tv before, but I didn’t know that anime was a thing before I got an iPad and started rewatching Digimon on UA-cam. I then remembered some cool show and wanted to find it. That was Shaman king and it was awesome
Awesome video! The 4Kids and Toonami era definitely introduced me to a lot of other anime besides DBZ. Really enjoyed watching the reboot of Shaman King.
These past 3 videos are just a big wave of nostalgia
I was also introduced to Shaman King via the Shonen Jump magazine. It was right around the introduction of Jun and Bailong. Volume 1 of the manga was the very first volume of manga that I'd own, though my younger brother began collecting the rest of it while I focused more on Naruto and Rurouni Kenshin. Years later I would eventually sell him volume one. Anyway, it was very shortly after discovering Shaman King that the magazine would announce the anime and we were stoked. We enjoyed it for what it was and I personally really liked the "ly sisters" as we called them. We did feel the end of the anime felt rushed, but it was similar in that regard to FullMetal Alchemist, though that at least got a nice movie to finish it off nicer.
My brother and I also got the hawk and wolf games (mine was wolf) where I developed an obsession with the ArchAngels used by the X-Laws with (Lu)Cifer being my ultimate end-game spirit and favorite spirit in Shaman King in general. I loved their designs and enjoyed the reveal of them being cars given spirits. I was disappointed at first in their redesigns, but have since learned to love these literal transformers.
I haven't seen the new anime yet, likely out of nostalgia for the original even though I now know how 4-Kids worked...
Keep up this walk down memory lane and I'll admit iv rewatched this far more times then I have it set as rewatched in mal
Pretty sure that this series is what got me into "Fan Translation" manga downloading, and really opened up my eyes to how different versions of the same story can vary so dramatically.
Shaman King will always be a master piece. 4kids opening was fire too
Thank you so much for all videos you made. You are one of my absolutely best youtubers ever. :)
Jsi borec. Mám moc rád tvoji tvorbu. Zdraví Nogy.
I was first introduced via 4kids which I honestly liked and wished they could have gotten Yoh's original VA to return. I gotta say out of all the manga I've read, it probably has my favorite ending because its the first ending I've ever read where the Good Ending came by letting the Antagonist Win (Narratively Speaking). Its such a cool twist that the goal isn't to beat the bad guy, but honestly get him to let go of the hatred that drives him. And the final battle of the 5 Elements vs the Great Spirit still sticks in my head and I only wish the fight lasted longer.
so fun fact for everyone, a card game actually has a crossover with shaman king, cardfight vanguard has a full 2 sets dedicated to shaman king and each one has decks devoted to the main group of characters and all their effects are very anime accurate, surprised that doesnt pop up when you search around about the shaman king card game
Seeing you do these, it's only a matter of time before you cover zatch bell and I am lowkey looking forward to it.
I only played the 2 master of spirit games because I had a friend in high school who lent me his copy of the 1st one (that i had to replace because it got stolen)
The opening of the 4kids was the best
Hey nice video! My friend got me into Shaman King in 2013-2014 as I didn't get into the Anime when it aired on 4Kids. This is definitely an underrated gem
When the remake came out I was on it so FAST that was my childhood for sure and the remake is SO GOOD.
Honestly, one of my favorite moments in the manga is when they have a serious discussion about, "Hey! We get stronger every time we die and come back to life. Can we use dying and coming back to become stronger than the main villain?" Then someone does the math of how strong they are and how many times they can re-alive someone and they say, "No. You'd still be only a fraction of his power level."
This show still holds my heart, Lenny/Ren’s 4Kids voice is my favorite ❤ I can’t hear him talk any other way.
I came across the manga in my middle school library of all places lmao. I never read manga before and was slowly getting interested in comics, so I checked it out.
It made me laugh a lot and I was invested. I made my mom buy me some of the books before I knew I could read it online😅😂
I was *literally* thinking about this earlier today! The 4kids theme SLAPS!
Wait remember W.I.T.C.H.
One of my all time favourite mangas, so glad I discovered it through Jetix. The OG intro song is still a banger
I’m subbed to this channel and didn’t realize this had even been uploaded. I love Shaman King and I especially love Yoh. He’s such a fantastic character and protagonist. The channel SeaGee has a really great video about Yoh that I recommend people watch It really frustrates me that Shaman King was not as popular as the other Shonens from the same time, as SK started shortly after One Piece and Hunter X Hunter and before Naruto, Bleach and Gintama. I only got into the series because I saw a wallpaper of anime characters and Yoh was on there. He caught my eye because of his design, so I did a basic google search and learnt the remake was coming out. I then promptly forgot about it until the remake started airing.
I watched the first episode and fell in love with the series. Not long after that, as I watched the remake weekly, I started watching this original anime and ended up finishing it just about the time the first batch of remake episodes hit Netflix. Even though the remake covers the entire story, I still think the original anime is worth watching because it takes a bit more time to build up Yoh and Manta as friends and it has that anime original ending. I totally called that ending when I watched it too. The original also had the frankly great cliffhanger to one of the last episodes, where Hao eats Yohs soul. One of my favourite lines from the dub is when Ryu and Tokageroh are reading letters from Ryu's friends and Tokageroh says "Some of these guys can't spell too well."
Say what you want about 4Kidz dubbing, but they made one banger of an intro.
Love these videos 😊
YESSSSS! Thank you for this!!!
Of course I do, it had the best opening. At least in my first language dub.
I recently found out about the new version of the anime and was so excited..until I realized it had none of the spirit of the original and proceeded to stop watching. I loved Shaman King growing up, it was my shit and have since re-watched every few years, and it still holds up. The main thing for me though is Yoh and how calm and friendly he always is, how easily he sees through people's troubles, how empathetic he is and how abundantly clear it becomes that he is not only a good person, but would also be a great shaman king! I feel like I've been trying to become more like him throughout the years without even realizing, this anime character is so well put together and was such a role model for me (as weird as it might sound).
Dogg unlocking so many memories ❤
The intro slapped!
I got to meet Hiroyuki takei and i got his autograph on volume 1 and he signed some art for me as well :) Had pizza for lunch with him it was one of the best days of my life.
Banger after banger
I loved Shaman King as a child because of its story and characters but also because in my country the theme song was sung by a famous singer and it was amazing.
Oh we going in in on anime man i lobd this Channel
Shaman King also in the last couple years got a collab set with Cardfight Vanguard Overdress and Yoh was even one of the best decks in the game for a while (Although because we haven't gotten a 2nd set it's kinda fallen off)
I sure do; I was hoping there would be one for Shaman King! It was my favorite thing at the time
I'm rereading the manga; it seemed seasonal
I love Shaman King! The original animr was good to me as a kid but the manga was amazing and it sucks the remake still didnt nail the manga but its alright glad its getting adapted still. I also had a ps2 game growing up from the series i loved lol
That theme song was a great mood setter too
The 4kids version is the best one! I still remember the theme song
Did...didn't you already do this?...ooooh no i'm thinking of Negative Legend, sweet, more Shaman King videos!
You ever see Saiyuki Reload. One of the strangest yet kick butt versions of the journey West.
the intro rocked
Ha! The Fox Box! I remember watching Cubix and Shaman King back in the day. I was starting college then, so I didn't get to stay on top of the whole show and could only catch reruns on the weekends. Good times.
Seeing that Jetix logo alone awakened some long lost memories
To this day Yoh is my favourite Shounen Protagonist. Boy just wanted to chill and have a good time... if it were not for all this crazy shit going on he wouldn't even want to be shaman king... he does not seek recognition, glory or anything... he is just born into this world and time and has to do what he has to do
You must have read my mind I literally was watching your videos and thought about this show
You was so chill and Anna was badass imo
Shaman king was great even tho it was a bit rocky in the anime
The one thing I appreciate Netflix for is the Shaman King remake, 10th grade me was in a nostalgic high.
That opening from the OG Shamen King goes WAYYYYYY harder than it ever needed to be. Still know all the words.
I bought the two Uncut DVDs released for episodes 1-6 released about 20 years ago and the Complete Series dub Blu-Ray released a few years ago, absolutely loved it.
That theme song really slapped.
I've only ever read the manga, and I gotta say, these name changes are absolutely baffling to me :O
Boy, do I remember Shaman King. I never actually grew up with it and I'd only heard about it a couple times (I'm SURE though I saw someone selling the entire thing for 50 bucks at a local thrift shop back in elementary school), but what little I knew about it intrigued me. But right when the 2021 anime was announced, here in Italy we got the entire Kodansha release, and I immediately jumped on it. It was like 35 volumes, both original and redesigned covers, two volumes a month, 5.20 euro each. It robbed me of ONE YEAR AND A HALF of my life and almost 200 euros, but I read it all through the end and I don't regret it at all. That thing marked my life so much I literally measure the time between April 2021 and September 2022 in Shaman King volumes. Though I think I might have missed something story wise along the way (like, I didn't understand AT ALL that Hao and Yoh are supposed to be two halves of the same soul or that Yoh hated humanity too, or whatever was up with Horohoro and that whole wolf thing). Still haven't come around to read all the spin offs, I'm taking a LONG vacation from that narrative universe lol
Also fun fact, the Italian dub for the 2001 anime uses most of the original names despite it being based off the 4Kids version, for some reason
I was introduced to the story through the show then the manga, the first volume of which I got through a scholastic book fair catalouge, I still remembering being confused about the description saying" this book reads right to left" .
