- Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint-Laurent referred to as Yves Saint-Laurent or YSL, was a French fashion designer who, in 1962, founded his eponymous fashion label. He is regarded as being among the foremost fashion designers of the twentieth century. In 1985, Caroline Milbank wrote, "The most consistently celebrated and influential designer of the past twenty-five years, Yves Saint Laurent can be credited with both spurring the couture's rise from its 1960s ashes and with finally rendering ready-to-wear reputable. He developed his style to accommodate the changes in fashion during that period. He approached his aesthetic from a different perspective by helping women find confidence by looking both comfortable and elegant at the same time. He is also credited with having introduced the "Le Smoking" tuxedo suit for women and was known for his use of non-European cultural references and of diverse models.

People tend to forget that the most iconic pieces from Saint Laurent where simple it it's looks but actually Couture, and couture is inherently a complicated craftsmanship, I mean, the mondrian dress wad couture and it looks basic!
Excellent video. I really love YSL as a fashion designers and his downfall was inevitable as every other designers suffered the same thing - losing control of your own business and image.
Thoughts on YSL: Haizz. It is sad that not everyone can appreciate the end of his career (1990s), he was not creating or pushing boundaries any more but his 90s clothes actually matches his personal opinion on style and fashion. How the clothes is not as important as the women and women should feel comfortable and confident in their clothes. The clothes all embrace the women firgue but still give them this sort of relax vibe. I can actually see women wearing the entire collection from any of his 90s shows and i appreciate the way he master the art of dressing women.
HATED Pierre. I always have suspicion about the circumstance of the civil union between him and YSL. YSL never knew he was dying. He broke up with Pierre 20 years ago. Why did he suddenly married Pierre at the last days of his life? The union has alot of advantages for Pierre, giving him great control over YSL legacy (and properties).
Wow crazy info. The end is actually scandalous
he looked like he was suffering in silence , pierre really did look suspicious
idk something about me feels like he was a little autistic , correct and forgive me if im wrong
but Saint-Laurent you are not forgotten neither is you r work , you still inspire this generation
and your clothes and style will stand 100 of years , your dream will be a reality , RIP King
I’m so grateful for all the work you do, thank you so much!
I second that motion!
i love masculine dressing on women, but i also don’t understand why designers thought that they had to dress women like men for them to appear more powerful and dominating
I think it'd be fair to say that aesthetic human 'power', dominance of space, comes from physique. Sartorial designs have always sought to accentuate these features that are more prominent in men and now they're accentuating the same features across the spectrum. It's great! 👍
Because women were typically pressured to wear "feminine" clothing. So for the time, it was definitely a statement that rebelled against gender norms. Nowadays, people are realizing that gender is a social construct anyway. Gender is merely a mindset. The only thing that's real is sex.
@zeynepkatay Chanel had that esthetic, as well, and has not changed, The idea of a “suit,” instead of the traditional “dress” for a woman Yet, in antiquity, both men and women wore dresses! Men were then and are now still are the image of power.
Talking about Pierre Bergé's takes on money and how he doesn't like business, it makes me remember a great line from the French rapper Alpha Wann : "Les artistes aiment parler argent, les banquiers aiment parler d'art" which you can translate as "Artists like talking about money, bankers/businessmen like talking about art"
To me it's kind of a complex such persons have, Bernard Arnault himself was not able to be an artist even though he's pretty good at playing the piano, so he married an artist and spent his life developing luxury houses by appointing real creatives for the artistic side of the industry
You’re absolutely on point about your comments regarding YSL best years 60s and 70s. I did use his makeup brand only though out the 70s and when Opium came out it was huge in my country ( Italy)
Smart perspective. Mugler just died. Love Lacroix. There are others that escape me atm. Re: YSL he was said to be among the world's last licensed opium smokers. This explains the "illness". Fashion-wise, he was the first to use sheer materials in women's wear. I think this is/was a huge contribution.
would love a video on the history of Alexander McQueen and the interplay between Gothic and Romanticism in his collections
Thank you for this! As someone who is not as familiar with the history behind some of the things discussed in the documentary, I really appreciate how you took the time to explain everything.
AN HOUR?! You’re spoiling us 🥺
thank you so, so much for explaining the basics and clarifying basic fashion terms. i’m just getting into all of this and it is so, so helpful. thank you so much for your work and sharing your perspectives!
Thank you very much for all your videos, they're always very informative and entertaining! I'd love to watch one about Paul Poiret, it would be super interesting! Greetings from Mexico 😊
My opinion is that St Laurent created a style but come the 80s he kept designing not evolving, he was already established, so different than Karl Lagerfeld that designed many collections and when you look back he kept changing his looks. When I see YSL then I see exclusivity and he had the best clientele, HALSTON will be a good follow up to do since they started during the same era. One thing that I always remember about St Laurent when he showed his peasant collection it made the cover of NY Times , no designer has ever done that.
Cheers and Vivat for the Great Maestro of Fine-Arts !
Thierry Mugler please.
This was a treat. Thanks for your insights 🙏. Your parody of the rich lady was priceless too 😂
In case anybody still need YSL content after this, you can watch Clever&Chic video she uploaded yesterday about Saint Laurent's retrospective.
Hi, as always i really appreciate your explanations, I learned a lot more. Thank you 🙏🏻😊
I really enjoyed this video. I actually watched the whole thing haha. Also for the suggestions I would love it if you made one about Azzedine Alaia un the future

Star journalists sometimes get in to the bad habit of “Talking in Headlines” that is try to sell their wares to the editor or pressure to be relevant shaping those sensational, reductionist phrases or right outrageous statements. In resume, to attract attention. Journalism is a tough career, a spinning wheel to keep updated, moreover if you’re a columnist that want to be on top…
My then-girlfriend bought me a bottle of Yves Saint Laurent Jazz and fell in love with the fragrance!!!!
Hello and thank you for your gentle touch with Yves. I also want to support your honest assessment of today's fashion ...the majority is heartless, hollow, and honed for one thing only..$$$$. there is SO much of it's History that can be viewed from your artistic eye, without an almighty dollar or pound or euro blocking the picture. I like you best when you are unencumbered by profit and speaking from your artistic Heart. 💋
Thank you for this
Paused at16:03 to write this. Karl is by far the Towering fashion character designer. IM very humble opinion Karl was better. He changed w the times and new that a periodical change in his own look and aesthetic. Think of how his clothes were V much of the times until his death. Even the Calvin Klein underwear craze in America Karl offered his own take on it. YSL seems snobby and cut off- a life enabled by first mommy then Pierre 🙄All those beautiful shoes that were like theatre- like the capes collection where the models all rip open their capes to show an equally beautiful look underneath.❤ love your channel 👊🏼
Andre Talley there living and enjoying what he loved @1:06:18 🥺
Hi, Lovely work here. So inspiring that you are doing this for us to see here. Thank you
I'm not sure if you'd be interested in this idea, but would you consider making a video on Sk8thing of CAV EMPT ?
Or a video on CAV EMPT as a whole?
I thoroughly enjoy their presentation, designs, and product quality. I'm fascinated by how contemporary brands operate, and CAV EMPT seems brand new compared to most of the brands / designers you've discussed and analyzed.
Either way I thank you for your informative content and I appreciate you and what you do. Thank you!
This is amazing resource !
Please do one on Jun Takahashi
In US we call it a 'Shift Dress' 😄🤗 This is so interesting sir thank youu!
Omg!!!!! I'm so excited to watch this
Excellent video and informative
Fashion designer Willie Donnell Smith , 1976 - 1986
Amazing video. Such a brilliant designer. The balance of commerce and art/design is very difficult to manage. I’d like to see a video on Patrick Kelly.
I hope my fashion line can be as big as Louis Vuitton but i know there’s not a lot of colored people that get a chance to make a designer brand without others calling it street wear
A whole hour? I might have to play it at 1.25x playback speed to hear it all
Luckily I talk very slowly so that might be a good idea 🤣
@@FashionRoadman saw the whole thing! It worked perfectly!! Thanks!
YSL was a genius but I am surprised you did not mention his struggle with addiction & depression. Which explains his rather bizarre behavior.
My take on Yves Saint Laurent fall (if you can call that) is that capitalism always corrupt artistic expression. He became jaded the moment he let his atelier became this juggernaut of a fashion house. The capitalist side of fashion is not for him and at his last days he became again jaded because he knows that he can’t win back the time that his artistic vision is flourishing and not constantly worrying about the business side of fashion. It’s a vicious cycle of fashion sad to say
Amazing video
I appreciate your commentary, you presented very interesting perspectives and very interesting fashion educational/information!
I especially like and concur with your point regarding them saying he was "god and the greatest." 😂
Keep up the good work!👊 👏
I feel like journalists especially of that time make statements like Suzy they’re talking from a sense of the time. the time of this/her time in fashion it’s completely plausible that she would say what she said about him. it’s like a context thing, i look at statements like that as very personal even though they sound like blanket statements.
Great video
Nice video :)
Finna watch thah whole thing
YSL is one of my favorites 🥰🥰
The explanation seems to be over thought - It was the 60's and the term Mod encapsulates the style and the period.
Very good video
I would like you to discuss your opinion on past Mcqueen shows more power to you and your channel
My favourite momment was when you mimicked the most-people-these-days-run-on- budget momment .....
And please do for schiaparelli
Wow very nice video....
Do a Tom Ford one !!! And Gucci too !!!
Nice video
Fantastic ❤️
This was a great video. I agree with you Fashion isn’t truly fashion anymore. It’s just motifs and cheap garments disguised as fashion
Amazing
Good video
I would love an ann demeulemeester video or rey
This guy is amazing
UMMM you’re amazing!
For a supposed introvert, he was amazingly oblivious and self-unaware of his own hypocrisy, especially when he talks about the bourgeoisie. Funny enough, him being a Leo, makes nearly all of it check out - he's essentially self-centered enough to overlook so much of his own self-contradicting attitude.
with helmut newton i don’t think he couldn’t make the photos look “good” but him as a photographer/artist, i think he was saying he was uninspired by the photo. I’m sure technically it was a “good” photograph but as everyone else that saw the photo he said it wasn’t fantastic. It didn’t move him. I get that.
Would love a conversation with you one day!
@48:01 He understands the business but he doesn't like it, but He understands the game and how's it played. The benefit is the financial windfall, but its at the cost of the Art.
A few minutes before this, You said " That fashion is really about the money when you get to a certain level" (Paraphrasing) You.
This is Capitalism, what our System is based on.
I Enjoy the content.
I'd love a video on Issey Miyake.
Good video...
...
Can we head to Japan for future videos ?
A brilliant designer
Interesting!
Very good
Beautiful love that 👌👌
to be fair, suzy said ‘towering genius’, not ‘last genius’. quite different!
Awesome
FRM do a top 10 of YOUR favorite shows. Then ask the audience??
Great
I agree with Suzy Menkes

Rip gaspard 😭
Make one for Giorgio Armani plz 🖤
Saint Laurent never fell he died darling
Nice
Okay so road to 100k and don't act like Kanye West; please free the Madeleine Vionnet video hahaha
Madeleine Vionnet shall appear on the fashion archive in due time
🌸🙌🏼🤩
i think this is not the best documentary about YSL. please do a reaction on a different one. they skipped a lot of details and important events. he actually is the revelation of his time, as Cristian Dior and Coco Chanel had predicted. they skipped a lot of important things about him and you should actually give him more credit, there truly won’t be anyone like him. please red more about him, he is truly amazing and been through a lot
Wow
Nice nice
Sweet
👍
👍🏻
👍👍👍👍👍
he knew what side his bread was buttered on. They could pay for it.
