Cannery Row Trailer - Directed by David S. Ward and starring Nick Nolte, Frank McRae, M. Emmet Walsh, Tom Mahoney, John Malloy. A depressed section of Monterey, California is the backdrop for an offbeat romantic comedy about a pair of mismatched lovers. Doc is a lonely marine biologist and former baseball star. Suzy is a scrappy, abrasive drifter who can't even succeed as a prostitute. Add Cannery Row's band of resident drunken derelicts to the mix and fireworks result, though not the romantic kind.
MGM - 1982
This is in my top 25 favorite movies of all time.
me too got it on blu ray and dvd
"I like you just fine when you're not around" - now that's gotta be one of the all-time great lines.
Though the title is Cannery Row, it seems as if it is mainly based off of Sweet Thursday, which does have a love story in it
Sarah Sanchez I noticed that also. Suzy isn’t even in Cannery Row
This movie is not at all close to the book, though much of it was taken from Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday. It is nonetheless a thoroughly delightful movie. No, they did not try to make it into Indiana Jones: it was made before the Indiana Jones trilogy. The only Disneyfication is the theme of the costume party.
There is a great deal of comedy, a good deal of pathos, a cast of society's castoffs and a frog subplot that is no less than brilliant. The color is this trailer is not good, but the movie itself is. Debra Winger is wonderful, Nick Nolte was never better, and the supporting cast is amazing. Add to that John Houston's gravelly narration and Dr. John's piano and you have a wonderful film.
thanks for the review! i came here out of curiosity after reaching halfway in the book
@@hambonefakenamington69 epic fakenamification, hambone.
Yeah it looks pretty Hollywood/romance based on this trailer. I kinda hope someone will make it again but more akin to the book, I don’t think it needs a Hollywood plot to be enjoyable to watch!
‘Cannery Row ‘ and ‘Let it Ride’ are two of my all time favorite comedy movies. Wonderfully entertaining stories. ‘Napoleon Dynamite’ ain’t a bad one either.
This movie is an example why no book should be judged by Hollywood's version.
0:10- It's gonna be a bummer, isn't it?
0:50- He just pissed off that snake.
1:04- What? This movie DOES seem a little random.
2:29- What...is...happening?
Great sets in this movie
Cannery Row is one of my favorite books. I've listened to it on Audible prolly 4 times all the way through. There is no Debra Winger character. There's is no love story. And the owner of the store is a Chinese man named Lee Chong. This movie's rearranging of everything makes me sad, can't watch it
Have you read the sequel to Cannery Row? This movie is based more on that book.
I don't recall Steinbeck's version being a love story...
I hope you read Sweet Thursday in the past 5 years. Its the book that has the love story. This movie combines the two books.
I freakin love the movie
I'm here because I read Raquel Welch was replaced by Debra Winger as Susie, which is kinda ironic. Wow, A Steinbeck book!
Definitely as 🍺Beer and Sardines kinda 📽movie 🔬🔭 don't forget ,
Try making a Beer Milk Shake, as wierd as it sounds, they're great , but use a whisk-not a blender.
Whhhat??? This isn't the book!
i read cannery row book
It’s a life it’s life a good life
For some reason I want this movie remastered but with a Tom Waits soundtrack. 😂
Why do I have the feeling Steinbeck would HATE this?
I just finished reading Cannery Row, which is a surprisingly funny book. There is no romance in the novel, but it seems here that Hollywood tried to make an Indiana Jones clone. I do think Steinbeck would piss on MGM, who Disneyfied his sober humor into bubblegum twaddle.
I hope you read Sweet Thursday in the past 4 years. Its the book that has the love story. This movie combines the two books.
@@wellsbengston4132 thanks I had no idea Cannery Row had a sequel, I just finished it too but now I'll probably read sweet thursday
@@SEH-uf6ux I'm interested to find out what you think of it
The movie is better than the book because the movie is based two books. I’ve heard a book is better than the movie many times, but never the movie better. The movie isn’t great but I like it because it is so odd.
I remember when this movie came out. It was an epic flop and now I remember why.
I firmly believe emma stone and jennifer lawrence are debra wingers daughters lol
Did not perform well at the box office. Entertaining, but not great, Huston does a good job as the narrator.
What a terrible irresponsible adaptation of a great novel

This movie is based almost exclusively on the novel "Sweet Thursday," Steinbeck's sequel to the "Cannery Row." Both novels share the same setting (hence the looseness in the title of the movie), but the sequel takes place about 10 years later. Steinbeck wrote "Sweet Thursday" in coordination with Rodgers and Hammerstein, who adapted it as their Broadway musical "Pipe Dream."
where is lee chong ?
It combines Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday. not all the characters made it in.
Just the patron
In Sweet Thursday he has sold the place to a couple who now runs it.
Monterey is so boring now
This was a great movie 😊
My favorite line in this movie let's see what you got hot stuff right before they start dancing this is the best movie ever made it's been my favorite ever since it came out and I've been watching it for a long time. They just finished it so I thought I'd look on UA-cam and say something nice about it since I've been watching it for so many years
Too many for me to mention. But there are several in the scene ending with (and I'm misquoting) "and I ain't taking it off 'til you tell me how you like it".
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Cute movie here…

I love this movie!
This movie is a crime against humanity and the memory of John Steinbeck.
